Re: ring, blink, or something altogether different

I never actually had the opportunity to use it. I would think that after the
doorbell rings, you just say’ alexa, talk to the back door’. Why would you do
it otherwise.

The premise still holds. Just because you don’t... Folks are still using their
nose and whatever else tickles their fancy. And yes, people have and do use the
body part you're eluding to. A friend confided in me that his girlfriend at the
time (it didn't last) for kicks used his eleventh digit as her special touch
ID. Talk about TMI. Some things you'd just rather not know about others. Again,
it's all good. the point is we have options. Tomato Tommato.

Yes, a 9-year old article from when Touch Id was quite a novelty and people
tried all sorts of stupid stuff. I'm sure using my nose will be very reliable
and since baring my chest in the winter to use a nipple or taking off my boots

Oh, sorry, forgot the cat's paw, but then again since I think cats don't have
any use except for catching mice on a farm I think I won’t buy one for that

It might help if you were a bit more specific as to what you hate about the SE
2020.
As Richard said, the iPhone 11 is mostly the same as the SE 2020 inside, it has
I believe a slightly better camera and no home button, but apart from that and
its larger size it would be similar in performance.
Usually at this stage with only less than 2 months to go until the new iPhones
are released I highly recommend people don't buy new phones unless they lost
their phone or it was stolen or totally broke and they need a new phone
immediately.
It is entirely possible that most iPhone 13 models will be discontinued once
the iPhone 14 comes out in September, but even if you are most likely not going
to opt for the latest and most expensive phone, the deals on any existing phone
will most likely only get better as September comes around.

I doubt you will find that Voiceover on an iPhone 11, 12 or 13 will be all that
much different. Yes, especially the Max phones may have slightly larger
speakers and sound a bit fuller, but it's not a night and day difference.

As for your other issues you may have these just the same on any other iPhone,
e.g. if you turn on Screentime it will be no different on an iPhone 13 Max than
on an iPhone SE 2020.

I am looking for a two way intercom/doorbell system that is wired. I really
could care less about the video. Here is what I need it to do. When someone
rings my doorbell, Ineed to hear the ring on my phone alexa, indoor speaker or
whatever. I then need to be able to talk to the person who rang my bell to
find out if I want to let them in. I would like the system to be wired so I
don’t have to deal with changing batteries. I thought blink app was my answer.
However, I have never been able to hear the doorbell on either my phone or
alexa. Spoke with both amazon and blink tech suport and am quite discouraged.
According to them, I have to enable video and will then only get a visual
notification (picture) of someone at my door. Can anyone suggest something
that will work for me? Or, if you know that blink is accessible, can u help me
make it work? Thanks.

RE: ring, blink, or something altogether different

2022-07-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Sarah,

The ring app is quite accessible, we have a Ring Pro video doorbell and a
stick-up cam pointing into our backyard, but just wait until you actually get
into situations when somebody rings the doorbell, you get a notification on
your phone and have to try to act on it. I still don’t know why Ring makes it
so difficult and complicated to answer a press of the doorbell, it should be
like a phone call, you get the notification and you tap an “Answer” button
which immediately connects you to your doorbell, activates the microphone and
speaker and you can start talking. Unfortunately it is not that way and more
often than not the person at my door has gone away by the time I finally
connect.

And then of course don’t get me started on Alexa, Amazon owns Ring so one would
think it should be super easy to answer a doorbell button press with Alexa, but
once again it is not unless I am missing something. If Alexa plays a
notification on my Echo Show why can’t I say “Answer the doorbell” or “Talk to
my front door” or “Connect me to my doorbell”, really one would think that just
about anything should work, but it is very specific and finnicky.

Thanks.

Wonder if the cheaper ones are as accessible as the one you have. Were u able
to just use the audio features, or did u have to enable video as well?

What I don’t like is the voice is tinny, I have trouble seeing the keyboard
some times when I am on the phone... I was having trouble deleting downloaded
apps but I called apple and they helped me fix that problem... Screen time had
to be turned off to get the delete button to show... Other than those few
things the phone is ok... Guess I wil wait and see how things goes ..

alexa. Spoke with both amazon and blink tech suport and am quite discouraged.
According to them, I have to enable video and will then only get a visual
notification (picture) of someone at my door. Can anyone suggest something
that will work for me? Or, if you know that blink is accessible, can u help me
make it work? Thanks.

RE: Iphone 11 verses se2020 phones

2022-07-19 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I also wear some sleep headphones at night so I can read a book without
bothering my wife, and I don't have to worry about falling asleep while wearing
them. Sometimes I pull them down over my eyes so they don't irritate my
forehead. When I do this, and I have to unlock my phone in the middle of the
night to start my BARD book again, I have to tug up my sleep phones, unplug my
iPhone because the cord is too short, and point it at my face to unlock it.
Obviously I could get a longer code and buy a pair of sleep ear buds, but my
life would be a bit simpler and I'd save a bit of money if I had a touch ID
option on my phone. This is just my particular use case.

I agree with you about Touch ID. I have been using an iPhone XR with Face ID
and I miss touch ID. For one thing, I would rather lay my finger on a home
button than having to hold my arm away from me with my phone. For another
thing, the organization I work for has had a couple COVID outbreaks recently
which caused us to need to wear masks again. It seems that COVID will be here
for a long time so I’m guessing this isn’t the last time for us going back to
masks. I’m considering an SE the next time I purchase a phone so I can have my
touch ID back.

I'll admit I haven't read all replies, but why not just remove the device &
repair & go through the setup again? This way you should be able to rename the

Hello Sarai,

Okay, I don't have a 4th gen echo.

Have you done a search on the web to see if anyone else has had a problem
renaming one?

Also, if you have another smartphone or iPad signed into your Alexa account, I
suggest that you try renaming it on a second device.

Finally, although it may prove to be more trouble than it's worth, you may
consider deleting the Alexa app from your phone / tablet, rebooting the device,
reinstalling Alexa, then try to rename the Echo afterwards.

A couple of months or so, ago, this was the only solution that worked for me
when my Alexa app refused to perform what was considered to be a normal
function. I am running Alexa on an 8 Plus and an iPad.

Worse case scenario, you can simply call Amazon tech support.

Please let us know what happens.

I am not near one of my Echoes as I write this but I have renamed them without
any problem, in the past.

As I recall, after entering the new name, you need only to press the back
button.

Now I have not renamed an Echo since Christmas and there have been a great many
updates to the software since then but …

If this does not work, let us know, and I will fire up an Echo and give it a

RE: Iphone 11 verses se2020 phones

2022-07-19 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
Well there you go. The beauty of options right? Different strokes for different
folks. Then again, you can use more than just your fingers for touch ID. People
do use their nose so they don't have to take off their gloves in colder
environs. Then you get the more ... adventurous types that use even more body
parts for touch ID.

For me Touch Id was always much less reliable than Face Id, but then again I
live in northern British Columbia where first of all you have to wear gloves
for at least 5 months out of the year and I also do stuff with my hands,
gardening in the summer and woodworking more or less often year-round and when
my fingers are full of scratches and cuts or covered in glue Touch Id is just
not a good option whereas Face Id seems to be at least 95% or more reliable for
me.

I needed a second iPhone with dual sim capability and didn't want to shell out
big bucks for one of the higher end iPhones. I poked around and came across
some renewed SE 2020 64 GB iPhones on Amazon for $195. I figured I had Amazon's
return policy in case there was anything wrong with the phone or if it showed
up looking too rough.
I don't know what made it "renewed," but it's working perfectly fine. My
sighted wife says she didn't notice any scratches or knicks either. The
battery's at 95% too.
Hate is such a strong word. I mean, other than size and touch ID instead of
face ID with a few extra features thrown in on the newer phones, they're all
more or less the same. I mean the camera sure, but how good of a camera do you
need for OCR?
If anything, the SE 2020 is reminding me how much I miss touch ID whenever I
have to annoyingly punch in my passcode on my XR when face ID doesn't work for
the millionth time.

Hello all, if I bought a iPhone 11 would I be going backwards from the se2020?
I have the 2020 but I hate it and I can get the 11 for 299 and don’t know if
that is a good idea. Thanks for your oppinions

Re: Iphone 11 verses se2020 phones

2022-07-19 Thread Ryan Mann
I agree with you about Touch ID. I have been using an iPhone XR with Face ID
and I miss touch ID. For one thing, I would rather lay my finger on a home
button than having to hold my arm away from me with my phone. For another
thing, the organization I work for has had a couple COVID outbreaks recently
which caused us to need to wear masks again. It seems that COVID will be here
for a long time so I’m guessing this isn’t the last time for us going back to
masks. I’m considering an SE the next time I purchase a phone so I can have my
touch ID back.

RE: Iphone 11 verses se2020 phones

2022-07-19 Thread Christopher Chaltain
And for me it's mostly been the opposite, i.e. touch ID has been more reliable
and convenient. There are just some times where I'd find it more convenient to
use my finger instead of getting my face and phone positioned so face ID will
work. I'm not pushing against face ID, and it wouldn't keep me from buying a
phone, but if I had the option then I'd be just a touch happier.

Re: conference call number identification,

2022-07-19 Thread joseph hudson
Anthony, something like this is only available if you're using zoom. And the
person is using the telephone to call Lynn. And this is only accessible from a
computer or a smart phone. Some conferencing services have web control freak
and see where the people have called in. But unless we know what conferencing
service you're using, we could not give you any better instructions.

When you are at your coffee shop and are connected you can swipe down on the
network to “More” and then double tap, after that you can toggle the “Auto
Join” option to off and that might do it.

If it doesn’t then you have to forget the network which means if you want to
connect to it again down the road you would have to reenter its security key.
If there is no security key, e.g. if it is an open public network then maybe
turning off auto join will do it. If all else fails you can always turn Wi-Fi
off completely.

In iOS 16 you will have more options to manage networks you have connected to
in the past, currently if you have connected to your coffee shop before but you
are not there you won’t see that network which is why you have to wait until
you are physically there to see if you connect automatically or not.

RE: dugging query

2022-07-19 Thread Christopher Chaltain
As Michael said, I find it annoying. I'll be listening to something and the
volume will drop just to hear some sound icon from voiceOver. I guess I could
turn these off, but I'd rather have them and just turn audio ducking off.

I agree. I tried setting up the feature on the iPhone where I could just enable
it with two knocks on the back of the phone, but I found this gesture too
unreliable. If it worked, I could turn on audio ducking even if I couldn't hear
VoiceOver. Instead, I settled with putting it in VoiecOver quick settings,
which makes it tough to turn on when the media volume is overwhelming VoiceOver.

I generally find it annoying if I'm listening to something like music or a
soundscape. Audio ducking is very drastic and lowers the volume such that
you'll be pulled out of any flow state. Sound scapes and music are dropped in
volume enough that you'll miss hearing things other than VoiceOver. It depends
on what you most value hearing at the time. I wish there was a settting to
control how drastic the volume of other audio is ducked. Even better would be
an ability to set the relative volumes of things so VoiceOver was loud enough
to always be distinguished. It's an imperfect but at times useful tool..

Re: dugging query

2022-07-19 Thread Flor Lynch
If you're listening closely to music or other media content, with audio
ducking on VoiceOver can knock that down for a bit. It's a matter of
preference really, whether to have ducking on or not.

There may be times when you'll want it on, but other times you'll prefer
it off.

Hi all,

If I walk in to my local coffee shop with wi-fi calling turned on, will my I

Are there any security risk when using wi-fi calling?

Thanks,

RE: Question about joining Wi-Fi

2022-07-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If they also have an iPhone and they try to join your Wi-Fi you should get a
request to share your credentials with them. If you approve the request they
will be connected to your Wi-Fi without having to type in the password.
If you are somewhere else like a hotel and if one person types in the password
they can at that point share it with another iPhone user whenb they try to join
the same network.

RE: Iphone 11 verses se2020 phones

2022-07-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

RE: Deleting Apps on the se2020

2022-07-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
As far as I know most Apple stock apps can be deleted nowadays.
Even things like the App Store, Settings and the Phone app seem like they can
be deleted, at least when you go into editing mode you can select to delete
them and you are then prompted if you want to really go ahead with it. I for
one am not about to try and delete my Settings app, maybe if you try to confirm
you are then told it is not possible, but it of course would be silly to do so
and I am not sure why Apple let’s you even go as far as you apparently can.
It is one thing to delete an app like Mail since you can nowadays use a
different Mail app like Outlook as your default Mail app, but to my knowledge
there are no replacements for the Phone app, Messages, the App Store of course
also would be not a good idea to delete.

1. Flick to the app you wish to delete.
2. Flick up till you reach the "edit" option and double tap it.
3. Flick down till you reach the "delete" option and double tap it.

At this point you should get a screen that offers the "remove" option, an
explanation of the remove function, the "delete" option, and an explanation of
the delete function.

4. Double tap the "delete" option.

Placing yourself in "edit" mode, step #2, is key to this operation.

I hope this helps. If it still doesn't work then I suggest you power down your

I agree. I tried setting up the feature on the iPhone where I could just enable
it with two knocks on the back of the phone, but I found this gesture too
unreliable. If it worked, I could turn on audio ducking even if I couldn’t hear

It's an imperfect but at times useful tool..

is without stopping whatever is playing then if you have audio ducking turned
on it is much easier to hear Voiceover because as soon as you use your phone
and Voiceover is talking the audio volume of whatever else is playing is
reduced. If you stop using Voiceover the audio volume is restored. I highly
recommend to turn it on, but that is of course my personal opinion and I am
sure others think it should be turned off.

Why don't you go to the manufacturer's website and get the information from the
horse's mouth so to speak.
Also a simple Google search for "Roborock E series vs S series" will probably
yield comparisons and reviews.

As for Mich saying he couldn't find anything for $200, keep in mind that most
people discussing this are from the US so if it's $200 in the US it means it's
probably at least $260 to $300 here in Canada.

I have started a route in the middle, but, since I am not using Sound Scape
right now, I cannot tell you what to do. I believe I went to the route and
double tapped the marker where I wanted to start.

Just using a marker with out a route is similar to using Ariadne GPS. It will
constantly tell you the direction and distance to the marker if you have set it
as a beacon. Obviously you will not have intermediate markers and direction on
the way. Also, it the constant dinging in your ears drives you nuts, just push
the stop button on your headphones or whatever you are using and the app will
only give you the distance to the beacon about every fifty feet or so.

Re: Renaming Echo

2022-07-19 Thread Cheryl LeFurgey
> Hi, everyone.
I just renamed two of my echo dots, both fourth gen.
All I did was go to the Alexa app, then devices, then all devices.
Once there, tap on the name of the device you want to change, then on device
settings.
You'll see your current device name, then VO should say edit name. Double tap,
delete what's there and type the name you want, then hit return on your
onscreen keyboard.
The name should be changed now. At least, that's what worked for me, so
hopefully it'll help anyone else who wants to rename their echo.

RE: Renaming Echo

2022-07-19 Thread M. Taylor

Mark

Hello Sarai,

I am not near one of my Echoes as I write this but I have renamed them without
any problem, in the past.

As I recall, after entering the new name, you need only to press the back
button.

Now I have not renamed an Echo since Christmas and there have been a great many
updates to the software since then but …

If this does not work, let us know, and I will fire up an Echo and give it a
try to let you know.

Just to clarify a little bit a route is a string of markers that help you
navigate to a particular location. If you just have Tim Horton as a marker, you
can leave the app off and whenever you need the help turn the app on and set
the beacon which is the audio marker to Tim Horton and it will take you the
rest of the way. A beacon is simply a marker that is in focus and has the
sound. If you are not concerned as much about battery life, you can keep the
