RE: A Question about corrupted TVOS VoiceOver Output when Heard through a Sound Bar that is Connected to Television via Optical Cable

2022-11-24 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Simon and thank you for following up on this.

Well, I changed my Apple TV's TTS to my beloved Samantha and, while doing so
greatly reduced the degree of the drop-outs, the issue remains.

However, I discovered a couple of things that lead me to believe that the
problem is not VoiceOver.

First, I realized that this problem does not occur when the television's native
screen reader speaks. For the record I have a Sony X85K model which is running
the latest version of Android 10. This television is considered a Google TV,
as opposed to an Android TV. I have set the television's OS to use Google's
original TTS engine, my favorite one, of course.

Second, I discovered, today, that my DVD player's native screen reader, which I
believe is developed by Samsung, has the same drop-out issue as the TTS on my
Apple TV.

Again, the drop-out problem only occurs when using anything other than the TV's
native TTS when connected to my sound bar via the optical cable.

I would conclude that the problem may be with my sound bar, which I purchased
for a mere $39, but the fact that the native television's TTS works just fine,
would not seem to support such a conclusion.

Regardless, while the issue may be a bit annoying, it is certainly not a
show-stopper by any means.

Again, thank you for the follow-up.

Oh, before I forget, this problem occurs even when I disable the television's
native TTs.

Mark

Hi Mark,

I've got my apple tv 4k gen one connected to my tv with an HDMI 1.4 cable,
Then my tv to my sonos play bar with an optical cable,

This is one of the older original sonos play bars from probably 10 years back,
I have my ATV updated to the latest prod tv OS version, And I'm using I think
it's karen the Australian voice now for the tts,

And I'm not noticing this like you are,

Have you tried changing your aTV voice to something other than alex?

Subject: A Question about corrupted TVOS VoiceOver Output when Heard through a
Sound Bar that is Connected to Television via Optical Cable

Hello Everyone,

I know this was discussed in the distant pass but I do not remember if a
resolution was determined.

Okay, here is the scenario:

1.
This problem only occurs with the TVOS TTS speech engine. All other audio from
Apple TV is heard as expected.

2.
This problem only occurs when the television is connected, via an optical
cable, to a sound bar.

3.
This problem only occurs when VoiceOver is heard through the sound bar.

4.
I am using the Alex TTS engine on my Apple TV HD running the latest version of
TVOS.

The problem is that the first parts of words, spoken by the TTS, are getting
dropped.

So, for example, the word "channel" comes out "anel." The word "Thursday"
comes out "stday," and so forth.

Any ideas on what is causing this or how it can be resolved?

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

Re: NFL audio

2022-11-24 Thread Andy Baracco
It seemed to me that the app acted differently after the trial period ended. I
think after the trial period ends it begins to learn your preferences, because
when I entered the Games tab the 49er game would be the first choice. As I said
previously, I have not tried to access the other functions such as playing a
past game, etc.

I could have sworn someone on this list asked me to try the NFL app in the
free seven day trial period and post my results to this list, which I did.
Instead of going through my mail box, I’ll just say that getting the NFL app to
play the audio isn’t intuitive, and I posted some pretty convoluted steps to
get the audio playing. Also, once you get the audio playing, you don’t have
access to the audio player, so you can’t pause, fast forward or rewind the
audio.

As for advocacy, the ACB and NFB HAVE WORKED WITH THE NFL and reached
agreements in the past, but these apps tend to make changes on a year to year
basis, and every year it's like starting from scratch.

In the past, they had a cheaper option called audio pass, where you could
simply listen to the radio feeds, but that stopped a while back.

For several years ai used an app called Game Day to access radio feeds, but
the NFL has been putting additional pressure on radio stations to stop

You can still get 5 minutes for free with Aira, but as a non--paying user you
are not getting priority and you just have to keep trying. In many cases I find
that if you try a few times with a small time interval of 30 or 1 minute in
between you do get through, but if you need help now and not 1 minute from now
you might be out of luck.

Hey Mich, one could probably go crazy testing out the number of OCR apps
available. For reading all required information on banking and credit cards, i
have found the very best OCR Program to be Voice OCR. Most OCR I have tried
can't read the embossed numbers on the cards; Voice OCR has failed me only on
one card and I can't so far get entry to Aira as an impoverished non-paying
member.

Sing along with Mich! (sometimes I can't help myself!)

2022-11-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

2022-11-24 Thread doug parisian

Mich and Richard, sorry for being slow on the reply, got a bit busy.

Anyway, I have used several Apps over the past 10 years and found the
best overall recognition was done by Voice OCR. I have used the
Microsoft offering and others which are now in suspended animation since
Voice OCR reads cards, canned and packaged goods, and messy items the
best of the bunch. And, I'm not sure why being a student is a strike
against the developer. I have received any help I requested through the
support feature of the App.

RE: NFL audio

2022-11-24 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Why are you saying they expect people to go to SiriusXM for radio streams? I
know SiriusXM carries the radio feeds but the NFL app does support these as
well, so they should work and the NFL app should be accessible. Plus the NFL
app supports more than just radio feeds, such as archived games as Richard
pointed out and those compressed games where you can listen to a whole game in
like 45 minutes.

I’m not optimistic that the NFL will fix the app, but I know they won’t if
people don’t report the issue. I reported the issue to the NFL and also opened
up a complaint with the ADA, but nothing came of that. I’ve moved on to
SiriusXM for NFL radio broadcasts and other things, so I’m no longer trying to
or interested in using the NFL app.

In short, no.

SiriusXM is still the most reliable way to get NFL broadcasts.

They do not have archives of games though, which some people want.

RE: Upgrade from iPhone 11 to Iphone SE 2022

2022-11-24 Thread Carolyn
The good thing about USPC is that I can charge my phone from low 20's to around
80% in about 45 minutes. That is not a deal breaker, but it is nice to have
that benefit.

No, it is not worth the upgrade. The SE 2022 has the iPhone 13 chip, which is
not much faster than the 11 or 12. The big change from the
11 to the 13 is 5g connectivity and most cell phone companies in the United
States have not deployed it in a way that it makes a difference in the
experience for nearly all iPhone users. They all have network upgrade plans,
but the promises of dramatic speed increases or vastly greater coverage
footprints have not materialized. The companies are currently refusing to
explain how their previous claims fail to match today’s operations for most
users.

Personally, I have turned off 5g on my 13 Mini and enjoy longer battery life as
a result. It only was available in downtown Chicago, and I did not experience
5g in all parts but just some. iPhone affordability is achieved when people
hold onto their phones until iOS can no longer be updated or even after iOS
updates cease. For the iPhone 6s that was seven years and it was six years
for the iPhone 7.
Both are still reliable phones today, particularly if kept in an indestructible
Otterbox hard shell case. Apple makes highly durable hardware that lasts for
years. Your SE 2022 will still be useful and functional well into the mid-2020s
and beyond. Apple has some really big changes planned for future phones. USBC
will be in phones for next year, although only the Pro will have the super-fast
transfer rate.
In 2023 or 2024, iPhones will have the three nanometer chip, requiring less
power from the battery and significantly greater speed, enabling the iPhone to
perform even more complex tasks. Services like live text, enhanced image
description and LIDAR were either as a result or fully enabled by the five
nanometer chips introduced with the 12 series in 2020. Exciting new
functionality is coming to the iPhone and I am saving my pennies to run out and
have the future in my hands when it arrives.
