RE: Wishing for a Simple WalkieTalkie App for iOS

2023-07-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hi,

You know, there are not a great many things on my bucket list but one of the
items is becoming a ham.

I have wanted to become a ham for over 30 years but have not done so, to be
honest, because of my fear of failing the licensing tests.

Now I don't know much about it but back in the 80s I had a couple of friends
who wanted to get their licenses but failed to do so.

I don't want to go off topic, on this, but if anyone of you hams would like to
send me the steps on how to go about getting a license and an blind and/or low
vision accessible way to go about it, send me a reply, off-list, as I would
greatly appreciate it.

Mark

Subject: Wishing for a Simple WalkieTalkie App for iOS

Hello Everyone,

Earlier this weekend I and a friend were up in the San Francisco airport
waiting on a flight back to Los Angeles.

As we had quite a bit of time before our flight, we decided to explore the
airport, separately, and meet back at the gate after a While.

I thought this would be a great opportunity to actually use the Walkie Talkie
app on our Apple Watches to stay in touch.

It didn't work as well as I had hoped. For one thing, there were so many
people crowded in the airport that I couldn't hear the speaker on the watch
when she tried to reach me. Add the ambient noise of all the people, coupled
with the endless and continuous flight announcements, and, for me, at least, it
was an impossible situation. I had to hold my wrist against my ear and I felt
silly doing it and my arm got tired, very quickly.

Second, when I tried to use my Airpods to connect directly to the watch???
Well, let's just say that my VoiceOver / Walkie Talkie app experience was not a
good one.

Although I have used the walkie talkie app many, many times, when at home, this
was the first time I had tried using it out in the wild, as it were.

She told me that she could not hear me on her watch, either, for the same
reason. Now she has quote, normal, quote hearing, relative to mine; so I know
that the problem was not completely owing to my poor hearing.

So, the question:

Can you recommend a simple push-to-talk walkie talkie app that will work on
iPhone?

When I search the app store I see so many but really have no idea of which one
is best for VoiceOver users.

Now I just want a simple app that works as much like the walkie talkie app on
the watch but, of course, works on the phone.

I read, somewhere, that Microsoft Team has a pretty good walkie talkie app
feature but I'm not certain if it will work in a non-enterprise scenario,
between only 2 people.

Just so you know, we ended up using text messages to stay in contact in the
airport but it would have been nice to use a more direct voice interface.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

Hello Everyone,

Earlier this weekend I and a friend were up in the San Francisco airport
waiting on a flight back to Los Angeles.

As we had quite a bit of time before our flight, we decided to explore the
airport, separately, and meet back at the gate after a While.

I thought this would be a great opportunity to actually use the Walkie
Talkie app on our Apple Watches to stay in touch.

It didn't work as well as I had hoped. For one thing, there were so many
people crowded in the airport that I couldn't hear the speaker on the watch
when she tried to reach me. Add the ambient noise of all the people,
coupled with the endless and continuous flight announcements, and, for me,
at least, it was an impossible situation. I had to hold my wrist against my
ear and I felt silly doing it and my arm got tired, very quickly.

Second, when I tried to use my Airpods to connect directly to the watch???
Well, let's just say that my VoiceOver / Walkie Talkie app experience was
not a good one.

Although I have used the walkie talkie app many, many times, when at home,
this was the first time I had tried using it out in the wild, as it were.

She told me that she could not hear me on her watch, either, for the same
reason. Now she has quote, normal, quote hearing, relative to mine; so I
know that the problem was not completely owing to my poor hearing.

So, the question:

Can you recommend a simple push-to-talk walkie talkie app that will work on
iPhone?

When I search the app store I see so many but really have no idea of which
one is best for VoiceOver users.

Now I just want a simple app that works as much like the walkie talkie app
on the watch but, of course, works on the phone.

All replies greatly appreciated.

being a real radio nut as well, that is what I would very probably also do.
if you don't want to go through all the hassle of getting that licence
however, there are sets that are licence free, such as CB sets, those on the
49MHZ band, and those on the 446MHZ band.
not sure if there are any regulations about using such sets in airports
however, and you wouldn't get the echolink app access either.

Mark, being the ham radio op that I am, I can't resist the temptation to
suggest you get a ham radio license. That would enable you to use a "handy
talky" which would allow for great communication. The two of you might have
been able to use an app called echolink.

I read, somewhere, that Microsoft Team has a pretty good walkie talkie app

between only 2 people.

RE: light detector

2023-07-11 Thread Louise Peyton
Hi:
The light detector I did find in Seeing AI but made sure to update the app.
Also light Detector-utilities is in the app store as I just downloaded it at no
cost as is Seeing AI.

RE: Wishing for a Simple WalkieTalkie App for iOS

2023-07-11 Thread khevener
Mark, being the ham radio op that I am, I can't resist the temptation to
suggest you get a ham radio license. That would enable you to use a "handy
talky" which would allow for great communication. The two of you might have
been able to use an app called echolink.

Mark

Re: Chat GPT, Anyone?

2023-07-11 Thread Lynn Schneider
ChatGPT can be a lot of fun and can be very useful in the creative process, the
app is very simple to use and I think it is a great way for beginners to
experience working with AI chat bots. At this time, chat GPT cannot check the
web or provide sources for its answers, so if you are doing anything that
requires up to date information, you will need a chat bot like Bing that can go
out, search the web and bring back links to the actual sources it used to
create the output. There was a time briefly when chat GPT could use Bing chat
to do Web checking, but that feature was taken out because of some legal
issues. They say they will reinstate it eventually. For anything needing
up-to-date information or fact checking, I do recommend the Bing app, although
it is not as Easy to use and there is advertising, but I still like it best
right now. But if you just want to have some fun or get some help with the
creative process, the free ChatGPT is a fine choice.

Re: Chat GPT, Anyone?

2023-07-11 Thread Devin Prater
They both use data from September 2021. Correcting it only corrects it
for that one chat and context instance, not for everyone or even new
chats from you. GPT4 is more likely to say that it doesn't know, and
less likely to get things completely wrong, although it can get some
details wrong. It's like asking a very fast human who has crammed lots
of info into their brain. Just, a good bit different because it's not a
human, just trained on human data.

RE: Voiceover command question

2023-07-11 Thread Richard Turner
I went through all the standard braille commands I can find and that command
isn't one of them.
I wonder if that was a custom command that perhaps you meant to have more dots
and it took just dots 1,6 and the spacebar?

In any case, I would go ahead and replace that strange command so space+1,6
does what you want.

Re: Wishing for a Simple WalkieTalkie App for iOS

2023-07-11 Thread Alan Lemly
I have to agree with Richard. Even if you find a walkie talkie app that works well with VoiceOver, trying to use such an app with an Apple watch in an airport environment with all its ambient noise sounds like an exercise in futility. In such a situation, I would call the person on my iPhone and make sure my wired Earpods are securely connected before doing so. Alan Lemly Sent from my iPhoneOn Jul 11, 2023, at 7:54 AM, Richard Turner wrote:For me, I would just call the person. 2023-07-11 Thread jpanarese
I've also messed with the iOS version. It's both fascinating and scary. For
a laugh, I asked it to write a blog post on the advancements of Apple's
VoiceOver screen access solution for iOS and the Mac, and its impact on
accessibility for blind users. The result absolutely floored me. I have also
asked it for information on a number of subjects and, again, have been amazed
at what has been produced.

Hello,
In System Preferences open up Internet Accounts.
Then select the account from the first table.
Now press the details button and you should be prompted to change the name of
the account and your name.
If you change the name of the account that will effect the mailboxes menu and
also the information in the contacts application.

Re: Generating email addresses for Apps

2023-07-11 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I’m not sure I have always seen this available, but if you click on the enter
e-mail address field then you should find a list of auto-fill choices just
above the touch keyboard and one of these should be to create a random address.

Have you tried giving your phone a soft boot, or whatever you call it, when you
press Volume Up, Volume Down and Power off?

Yeah, this does have a screen protector. I’ve never had issues like these in
the past. And, I keep my phone in a holster, and when I have it out, I am
fairly careful. It’s rare that it takes any kind of fall or gets hit by
anything. That is why I’m surprised at the latest goings on.

A well-applied glass screen protector has no negative effect on touch screen
sensitivity. You must be more careful than me with your phone, I have a very
nice leather belt holster which keeps my phone nice and safe when it's in it,
but I use my phone in all sorts of situations from when I am sitting on the
couch or at my desk to while I am walking or working in the garden or my
woodworking shop. Just this morning I went outside to the backyard while I was
holding my iPhone and I misjudged the distance to the first step down from the
deck and briefly lost my balance and my iPhone went flying. My deck is about 5
feet off the ground and I was holding it at railing height which is about 3 and
a half feet so it had a nice 8 foot or so drop onto concrete. Fortunately it
was lying on its back, but in a situation like that a good glass scren
protector can totally make the difference between having a broken screen or
not. I also have it in a relatively slim, but well made and drop-tested case so
it did not seem to come to any harm and at least as far as I can tell there
isn't a scratch on it. Glass screen protectors are quite inexpensive on Amazon
so I will definitely not go without and if it ends up not sitting perfectly on
the screen any more I can simply replace it.

I have never used a screen protector because I keep my phone in a shoulder bag
my wife custom made for it so it isn't banging against things in my pocket etc.

Screen protectors can cause the lack of sensitivity you are describing.

Yes sir. I have cleaned my screen a couple times, because I don’t like having
dirty hands when I use my phone. I know it happens, so I try and keep it clean.
I believe I’m using a screen protecter, but I’d have to check. I’ve had this
phone for about four years, so I honestly don’t remember. 

Two things, Have you cleaned your screen lately and do you use a screen
protector?

A dirty screen can have all sorts of weird effects and if you have screen
protector which is maybe not very good any more can also have negative effects.

Good morning,

For a few weeks now, I have been dealing with a very annoying issue on my
phone. When I do something like swipe or other Voiceover gestures with my
finger, things start out OK, but after a few instances, there is a sort of jump
or crash that takes me one layer back or to the very top of where I started,
and I
