Hi Amy & Sieghard & Amy;

The only way I found around this situation is to turn Voiceover off and get
sighted help.

God Bless

I did fix the problem. What I ended up doing was going in to settings,
general, reset, and reset network. Once the network settings were reset and
the phone was rebooted, everything worked just fine. It has been said that
before you install an update to IOS on the phone that you should reset network
settings first. I never had problems before, so I did not do this, but I will
do this for now on. You will have to reenter your Wifi information, but things
will work better.

battery charger recommendations

2017-02-04 Thread Amy Ruel
Hello all,

I haven't been in need of this for some time, but my current charger is
dying. I have a battery case, but, when training or at long conferences, I
sometimes need even more battery power than the case gives me. I am looking
for a charger that will allow me to charge multiple kinds of devices, so a
multi-port option would be best.

Thanks.

Backing up and setting up new device

2016-12-25 Thread Amy Ruel
Hello all,

My husband got a new iPad for Christmas. He had never put his devices on
iTunes, so I backed up his iPhone and then, after setting up his iPad as new
according to Apple instructions, I backed up his iPhone to iTunes and then
restored the iPad from that backup. Unfortunately, nothing backed up,
although his photos, music, and apps are still on the iPhone.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Thanks for the response Michael.

At Audible, I think you can buy one book credit a month for the $9.99 you
mention; how many books to you get via TuneIn? Unlimitted, or still the same
one book a month?

Thanks,

Using tune in radio you can listen to the same butt books as audible. The only
difference is that with audible, you download the book while with tune in you
stream the book. I really like tune in radio for it only costs $999 for a month
in comparison to audible prices.

Hi David,

Yes there is a way to do that. Go back to the book you are reading. There is a
button which says play enabled. If you hit that button, the book will pick up
where it left off.

Hope this helps.

You just get an unknown error.

Hi Amy,

Sh-chord shows/hides the onscreen keyboard when a braille display is attached.
The Eject key does the same when you're using a QWERTY keyboard.

Best,

A programmable thermostat is a set and forget kind of thing anyway. The only
time I have to deal with it is on the rare occasions that I have to change the
batteries. if I'm curious as to what the temp is, simply pressing a button is a
lot easier than firing up the phone, opening an app, etc. But for some I guess
it can be kind of fun to see just how many things you can do with your phone.

IMHO, keeping things simple is in the eyes of the beholder. Accessing my
thermostat, from a smart phone I already have and which I already know
how to use, seems simpler to me than having to walk up and controal a
talking thermostat which will have it's own unique interface. If I
wanted simple, I probably wouldn't have gotten a smart phone. Now that I
have one, I'm going to use it for everything I can that will make my
life simpler.

A question.

Is there a way to make siri call a contact in my contacts that has nothing in
either the first or last name fields?

It doesn't seem to search the company field which is a tremendous oversite on
Apples part as far as I can see.

Is there a setting I can change to make that happen.

Thanks in advance.

If you are restoring from an encrypted backup, I don't understand why all that
stuff wasn't restored. If not, and you didn't do a backup of your contacts to
iCloud, it may be, as they say, too bad. An encrypted backup backs up more
things than does a regular one.

anyone else having trouble with using ApplePay on the apple store app?

2015-10-31 Thread Amy Ruel
Subject line says it all. I have had 4 support calls with Apple about this
to no avail. Have checked and my settings and account information are all
correct in iTunes and Wallet and ApplePay app. I have been able to
successfully pay with ApplePay in the Apple store, can purchase using "other
payment options" within the Apple store app, and have checked online to make
sure that my Apple ID is correct. I have re-set network settings twice,
verified and re-entered my billing address multiple times, and have tried to
order using cellular data. I have deleted and re-installed the Apple store
app.

When I attempt to purchase using touch id, I get "error image", which points
to the billing address. This has also been verified by a sighted person. The
only thing I note is that my ship to name is incorrect, though it is correct
in my Wallet app.

Any additional suggestions?

Thanks.

Have you tried using a splitter so that you can have voiceover while plugging
in the card reader?

Some folks have said they can plug in the swiper, swipe the card and then
remove it and continue with voiceover but I haven’t tried this. I just type the
card number in manually which costs a little more per transaction. This doesn’t
mean much for me as most if not all my transactions are done over the phone or
via fax so I don’t have the card physically with me anyway. I’m supposed to be
receiving a new reader which will handle cards as well as Apple Pay soon and it
is a blue tooth device I think so maybe it will work with voiceover but I’m not
sure. The bottom line for me is that even though the transactions are a bit
more expensive when entered manually Square is still cheaper than what I used
to use because it has no other fees than those associated with a transaction so
if you don’t charge anything this month you don’t pay anything. Some providers
require a monthly fee whether you use the system or not. I hope this helps.

Subject: Accessible Credit Card Apps Revisited

Hi all,

I have already posted this question, but haven’t resolved my problem yet, so in
hopes that someone here has found an answer I’m asking again.

My husband owns and operates a small business. I assist with that, both of us
being totally blind. We feel it is necessary to accept plastic as well as
checks and cash, as most people use credit and debet cards. He has an iPhone 6,
I have an iPhone 5C. We are looking for a credit card processing app that is
completely accessible for blind folks, no sighted help necessary. Is there such
a thing in anyone’s experiences?

Some say Square might be accessible, but you need a blue tooth ear piece to see
if hearing voiceover is possible, as the Square card reader takes over the
headphone jack on the phone. But no one had ever tried that to see if it would
actually work last I knew.

Any help is appreciated.

Rhonda

knfb reader problems

2015-09-28 Thread Amy Ruel
I updated to v9.0/1 and got a new 6s. KNFB reader didn't download despite
repeated requests, so I deleted and re-installed. If I go to take a picture,
the app closes and the focus changes to "wallet" which is on the same page
of apps as KNFB reader.

Suggestions? Others have same experience?

Thanks.

warning about restoring transferring purchases

2015-09-24 Thread Amy Ruel
Hello all,

I am struggling with iTunes. I am trying to restore my phone from a backup,
but I get a warning stating there are purchases on my phone that have not
been backed up. Using Jaws 16 and Windows 7. How do I find and enable this
option?

Thanks.

To transfer purchases, while the phone is connected to the computer with iTunes
running, hit alt-F to bring down the file menu, then arrow to devices. Right
arrow then down arrow to transfer purchases.

Helli Jim and all,
Full disclosure, I work for Baum USA and support the VarioUltra. One of the
main differences between this and the Beetle is that the VarioUltra is not just
a braille display; It has a suite of applications and can work as a stand alone
notetaker with 32 giggs of storage. The applications include word processor,
calculator, pdf, powerpoint, and excel viewers, file manager, settings, and
help.
The VarioUltra has 20 and 40 cell options, has aluminum housing, and has a
2-year warranty which includes free cleaning and battery care if sent in 1 time
yearly.

It's arrived: my new tiny, 14 cell refreshable Braille display produced by
HIMS. Nervous as I was ordering it from Sight and Sound in the UK, I feel
I'm gonna love it! it's small and the cells are nice. I've already
paired it with my iphone. And by the way, this Braille display can
remember 5 different bluetooth devices to which one connects. It also has
 a USB connection.

I know it's going to be a steep learning curve and that I'm going to be
asking lots of questions but I've already managed to read using Smart
Beetle from Voice Dream Reader and ibooks. The pleasure of reading
 quietly is intense! I'm delighted.

At present it seems that I have to keep my iphone or ipad unlocked in
order to use my Smart Beetle. Is this the case in your experience too?
Also, Smart Beetle can connect via bluetooth either as a Braille display
or as a bluetooth keyboard emulator and it can also work in combo mode,
i.e. you can have it connected as a Braille display and as a bluetooth
keyboard for more functionality. I can navigate home screens using it,
open and close applications, read text, I've written a text message using
it, I can use the rotor. However, when in Mail, I couldn't find a way of
deleting an email I didn't want to read and I was wondering whether there
may be an equivalent of a swiping gesture that Braille display could
imitate. I just wonder if you could share what else you can do with your
 refreshable Braille displays and iPhone?

 Many thanks for any suggestions

RE: Not getting notivications on my watch

2015-08-03 Thread Amy Ruel
Lol, gotta love it!

I have now finally gotten messages to be displayed, although they don’t delete
when I clear them from the watch, making it necessary to then review and clear
them on the phohe. An annoyance for sure.

I don’t get mail pushed to my watch at all unless the app is open on my iPhone.

I guess I would rather have my situation than yours. I have over 200 apps on my
phone and it took some time to get most of them not to push

To the watch.

Le me know how you make out.

Hi Amy, I'll swap. Lol. I'm having exactly the opposite problem. I want only
essential notifications on my Watch, such as messages, VIP mail, and a small
number of other apps. I have a very, very large number of apps on my iPhone. I
went into Notifications in the Watch app and turned off just about everything,
but despite this, everything is pushing to my Watch.

I've even reset, and set up as a new watch. No dice.

I suppose as a last resort, I may have to set up my iPhone as new and see if
that resolves it.

I'm curious. How do you all know if your battery pack has enough juice in it
or is done charging? I got one on a whim and, while I can just see the little
lights that indicate the power level in the pack, I'm guessing I'll need a
different battery pack when I eventually upgrade my phone and wonder how you
handle this. It was totally by fluke that mine has really bright little lights
that I can get into my tunnel vision, but if the lights were red or some other
kind of indicator, I don't think I could figure it out.
