Kelly did say one must do this which is not strictly true, but one proponent of this for example is Rob from the Today in iOS Podcast. Whenever he does mention this he usually says that most of the time upgrading goes OK without doing this, but that the likelihood that something might go wrong is much greater if you don't do this. I would agree with this, I have seen way too many upgrades from friends or acquaintances result in problems of various severity and whenever this happens and I asked if they at least force quit all apps and maybe did a restart of the device they said no, they just went ahead and started the update process. In my opinion it is reasonable that fewer problems occur if you do this. iOS may be better than other platforms in this respect, but it's not perfect and apps can use resources or access processes which may interfere with an update and I don't see why I should take this risk if 2 easy steps may avoid it. You can find out how and get the software needed from www.evasi0n.com. I guess most of the apps and tweaks I get are to circumvent iTunes, which I don't like. Once jailbroken, iTunes and app store and everything still works fine. You get another app store, Cydia, where you can download jailbreak apps and tweaks. My favourite tweaks are AnyRing, which lets you use any music file as a ringtone or SMS tone. AirBlue Sharing which fixes one of my main irks with iOS: To be able to send files to any Bluetooth-enabled phone or PC. However, if you bought the phone on contract when it came out and you have never requested it to be unlocked then it is not. Now that you are not under contract and I assume since you have a 4S that you are not, you could request an official unlock from your provider. Thanks for this, Billy From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: 23 April 2014 11:06 To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: mini connect. No, not a normal HDMI cable, no iDevice has an HDMI port. However, Apple does make a Lightning Digital AV Adapter. It is an adapter you plug into the Lightning port on your iPad Mini and then you can use a normal HDMI cable to connect the iPad Mini to your TV. The adapter is $55, here is a link to it in the Apple Online Store: http://store.apple.com/ca/product/MD826ZM/A/lightning-digital-av-adapter http://store.apple.com/ca/product/MD826ZM/A/lightning-digital-av-adapter You may find less expensive Lightning to HDMI adapters on Amazon or other electronics sites. Alternatively you can spend $45 or so more and get an Apple TV. It is a small box which you connect to your home WiFi or you can also connect it to your router with an Ethernet cable and you then connect its HDMI output to an HDMI input on your TV or surround sound receiver. You would then use Airplay to play content from your iPad Mini to your Apple TV wirelessly and you can also use Airplay mirroring which will show your iPad screen on your TV. To me the Apple TV is the more attractive option as it is also a wonderful device to use by itself for consuming content from Netflix (if you have a subscription), Youtube and other services. You can, of course, also buy and rent movies from iTunes via the Apple TV and play anything from your iTunes library on the computer on your TV. Keep in mind that it is pretty much a given that Apple will release the fourth Generation Apple TV this year. It is quite likely that it will be announced and shown at Apple's world wide developer conference on June 2 when iOS 8 will also be unveiled. The Plantronics Voyager Legend will let you listen to NLS Talking Books via the Bard app. The ear peace permits you to wirelessly control the play/stop button. If you setup the Bard app to permit use wile the screen is locked, then the Legend start/stop works by taking the ear peace out of your ear. In other words, you want to pause reading for a wile. Just pull the ear peace out of your ear. The sensors in the Legend pauses the playback of your book. You would have to do your rewind and fast forward through the Bard app. At first, I thought this would turn out to be a deal breaker but in reality, it hasn't. All you really need is the ability to play/stop. When a phone call comes in through the ear peace, playback is automatically placed on stop. I don't remember for sure but I believe the legend permits playing to start again via the start/stop button on the mike boom. The Plantronics Voyager Legend is a ear peace not a stereo headset however, the audio quality of the legend is very good and if you don't mind listening to a little music in mono and not to bother other people around you then the legend should work just fine for you. I use mine when I want to continue reading my book wile my wife is sleeping. Another advantage is, you can still walk around the house up to 30 feet and leave your phone on the charger. It has 4 controls. The first is a slide power on/off switch. The second is a momentary switch. This controls the up/down volume. The Siri button is mounted on the back of the mike boom. On the boom it's self is that button I was talking about. Tapping the siri button will get you a read out of the battery power given in talk time with a max of 7 hours. No stand by time is announced because stand by time would probably be a week to 10 days and you would use that time up by talking or using the ear peace for something like listening to a talking book, music, etc. If you can't remember what you can ask your legend, just tap the button on the boom and ask, what can I say The female friendly voice will come back and tell you your choices such as pare mode, Am I connected, check battery call back or cancel. When a call comes in, if you have given permission to access your contacts in setup, your legend will announce the caller and then ask you, answer or ignore? By this ear peace and you will have hands free access. I really like that feature because your hands may be holding a gallon of milk in one hand and your cane in the other and I'm sure you can come up with many more situations where hands free operation would be handy. Note: the call back feature redials the last called number which can be useful too. If I've left anything out, other legend users can chime in. I should lastly say that all audio is channeled through the ear peace. This coupled with the screen curtain gives you total privacy when punching in information you would rather keep to yourself. And, when you turn the legend off, all audio output is returned to your phone's built in speaker and you have to do nothing to make that happen. I'm looking for a bluetooth headset to use with my iPhone 5 and don't care whether it's a single ear or both ears set but I do want it to have the following features: 1. A2DP compatible so it works with VoiceOver. 2. Controls similar to what is found on the wired earpods including a remote button, volume buttons, and a microphone. Since my phone is in my pocket most of the time, having access to a remote button allowing movement between tracks and rewind and fast forward capability is critical. 3. A decent sound. I will be using this primarily to listen to books but will also use it to listen to music and make calls. I already have a Plantronics M50 Bluetooth headset but I don't think it has a remote button that allows starting and stopping of audio and rewind and fast forward of items playing. Can anyone suggest a headset containing the above features that you can recommend? Thanks in advance. Alan Lemly -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list.
