Re: Any problems people have with the iPhone 5C

2013-10-14 Thread Cait and Maggie
I have a 5 C and love it.

the problems I've experienced have been some of those related to voiceover.
these are a different screen sensitivity since installing OS7.x(I get this on
my i pad 2, also), when a call comes in, the phone automatically goes to
earpiece/up to the ear mode, even if I'm holding it away from my face.

Other then the little software things, which I think will even out as time goes
on, the hardware seems nice. The phone is light but not overly so.

Voiceover and you really want feedback from other sighted users I suggest
doing a Google search about “iPhone 5C complaints” or “iPhone 5C reviews”.
You could also send a message to Rob from the Today in iOS Podcast and ask if
he could ask people in his audience who bought a 5C to call in with their
thoughts on the 5C. The email address is t...@gmail.com. I even suggest to
listen to this weeks Today in iOS Podcast which most likely should be out
later this week since he has only done one since the 5S and 5C release so
there will most likelybe be people calling in with their thoughts, reviews or
concerns. He normally does the Podcast weekly, but it’s now been 2 weeks and
since it’s likely Apple sends out their invites tomorrow for next weeks iPad
event, I am sure he will have an episode in a few days. I find Today in iOS
to be a very informative Podcast and well worth the listen once a week.

Skype questions

2013-09-24 Thread Cait and Maggie
Hi,
We're thinking of using our i phones as our house phones and ditching bell
canada, for a number of reasons I won't go into here.

We both have Skype on both our computers and on our i phones.

Is this a viable way to do long distance calls-even if the person you are
calling doesn't have Skype?

I just went to the web site and read about something called Skype premium, but
it was confusing.

what about Skype credits? Do they run out every month, or do you just get some
and use them up however you do?

thanks,
Caitlyn

iOS 7 without the eye

2013-09-22 Thread Cait and Maggie
Hi,
I just spent the afternoon reading Jonathon Mosen's book.

For those of you who didn't get it, I thought it was an easy read and worth the
purchase price.

It explained things that I hadn't discovered yet myself, which is nice because
those things won't be a surprise now.

Re: understanding new typing method in iOS 7 was Re: confusing new sound in iOS 7

2013-09-22 Thread Cait and Maggie
Hi,
These are alternative characters that are also available for the particular
letter that you've selected. this makes it easier, for example, to type a
letter e with an accent mark, or some other character associated with the e
key. Before, you had to go into another whole screen of things by choosing
the button next to the space bar.

As far as I know, you can't turn this feature off, just don't hold your finger
so long on the letter. You should be able to do this even if you type slowly.

Ok, I will try to explain it better. :) If I hold a finger on a letter in
the keyboard too long, like say the letter, I get that sound and VO says
selected and I don't understand what this is for or what is happening.
However, if I select the letter E, VO announces alternative Characters
available, slide your finger to discover alternative characters, lift to
select a character and if I slide my finger around VO tells me what these
characters are and I have no idea what they are. I am guessing this is some
characters for languages other than English. For every letter on the
keyboard the alternative characters are different unless it's like the
letter R where there does not seem to be an alternative character. This
whole thing baffles me though. :)

 Thanks,
 Christina

Hi,
I got a new i phone yesterday, a 5C.

I got it all set up no problems, or so I thought.

Today I downloaded the bard mobile app. I got an email from apple support
informing me that the app was downloaded by a device not connected with my
apple ID. They said if I was the one who downloaded it to ignore the email.
Otherwise, somebody else was using my apple ID.

So, OK, how do I connect my new phone with my apple ID? I registered the phone

totally mystified,

Re: Suggestions Needed Concerning How to accumulate gold in Solara Game, and Questions to anyone who has completed the Game

2013-09-16 Thread Cait and Maggie
Yeah. I've slowed down to level up my heroes already. I don't care how long
it takes to finish.

Currently the game has 50 levels.
As you climb in levels, it takes a little longer to go from level to level.
Upgrading your heroes will cost more, and it will take more experience points
to get to the next level.
So all of this just gradually takes a little longer as you go.

I build new shops when I can, and try to pick ones that will yield a lot of

Re: Starbucks App Question

2013-09-10 Thread Cait and Maggie
Carla,
both Mark and I have the star buck's app.

Unfortunately, the screen where you set up an account is kind of quirky. I
just had to keep trying until I got all the required data in all the correct
fields. voiceover seems to not hold focus on the relevant edit box.

I did write them and say there are problems with voiceover. Once you get your
account set up, though, it's easy to use and doesn't seem quirky.

Re: Podcast app question and overall general podcast question

2013-09-03 Thread Cait and Maggie
what I'm trying to figure out about down cast is how to synch my un played
podcasts between my i devices and my mac.

anybody know how to do this?

Cait

On 2013-09-02, at 11:47 PM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote:

 Hi Shane,

The Podcast app of choice for most people on this list as well as many
sighted people is Downcast. It is a very feature rich Podcast app and
whether you download or stream your Podcasts is completely customizable. You
can even set it to download certain Podcasts while you not do so for others
and you can tell it whether to allow streaming via 3G or restrict it to
 Wi-Fi only.
The same goes for what to do with the Podcasts after you stream or download
them. You can tell it globally to keep no Podcasts, to only keep unplayed
Podcasts, to keep a certain number of unplayed or a certain number of all
Podcasts. Then once again you can overwrite the global setting by defining a
different setting for a certain Podcast, individual settings always have
 priority over the global setting.
Downcast is fully Voiceover friendly and I believe there is a Podcast about
 it on Applevis.
It is very easy to search for Podcasts by name, by URL or to import them.
You can even make Playlists, for example, if you have 3 different tech
Podcasts, you could make a playlist for them.
If Apple was smart they'd buy out Downcast. OK, so maybe that was a poor
choice of words, I am not implying they are not smart *smile*, but there are
definitely apps which do what some of their stock apps do which are way
better. Given Apple's resources compared to say those of the developer of
Downcast I find this rather interesting.

Just for completeness sake, the app iCatcher which is another Podcast app is
also fully Voiceover accessible and quite good, but I think if it came down
to a vote more people would vote for Downcast. When I just looked up the
links I noticed iCatcher said at the top of the app description that it was
on sale. However, the price of $2.99 I wrote down below is what was listed
and I thought that was the regular price. I did buy the app a long time ago
so if I look it up on my iPhone or in iTunes when I am signed in it only
asks me to download it since I once bought it and I can't see if the price
there shows up differently. Anyhow, here are the links:

 Downcast: $1.99
 https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/downcast/id393858566?mt=8

 iCatcher: $2.99
 https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/icatcher!-podcast-app/id414419105?mt=8

 Sieghard

 Hi,
So I downloaded the Apple Podcast app again yesterday, after not using it
for awhile, and noticed that you now have to download the podcast versese
just streaming it to the phone. I thought at one time, you could stream them
instead of downloading them, was U wrong here?
Is there an app like Podcast that gives you the option to stream them, but
has the same amount of content? Also, when you subscribe to a certain
podcast, does it put the podcast in your phone, then you download it, or is
 it already downloaded for youV
And finally, what's the best way to delete them from the Podcast app? I see
the podcast, then recently played, and a few other places where the podcast
 is at within the app.
 Thanks for all help, Shane.

synching question

2013-08-07 Thread Cait and Maggie
Hi,
today I attached my i phone 4 to my mac to try and synch a few daisy books to
it.
I tunes said that this i phone is synched to another library and did I want to
erase it and synch with the current iTunes library. I chose to cancel.
My question(s) are: why am I getting this message when I definitely have used
my i phone with this mac before? And, if I do choose to erase the stuff on my
i phone and synch with iTunes, will my iPhone go back to factory defaults and
then I'll have to put all my folders and such back again?
My i pad doesn't act this way when I attach it to the mac.
thanks,
Caitlyn, totally mystified today

You will then be able to search their catalog and download books directly.

voice dream or read 2 go?

anybody got any insight as to which of these two apps would be better?
Most of my daisy files are bookshare books, but I don't want to be limited to
just bookshare files.
thanks,

Re: How many folks carry their iPhone without a case?

I don't use a case anymore.
When I first bought my i phone 4 I got the Otterbox Defender case, thinking I

Re: iPhone 5 and Braille display question.

2013-05-23 Thread Cait and Maggie
Do you have a pc or a mac that you use with this display as well as the i
phone? I'd be interested to know how it works with the desktop as well if you
do? I'm not a jaw user is why I'm asking.
thanks for any input. You can answer off list if you want.
thanks,

Hi, since the hot keys are pretty much the same when using the iPhone or

your own preference and available money and other factors like who is
the manufacturer. Humanware Brailliant and Freedom Scientific Focus 40
Blue are two good choices. There are others, like the HIMS Braille Edge
and the handytech Easy Braille as well. I'm getting the Focus 40 Blue in
the next couple of weeks and am looking forward to it.

language. Well, partly. Some is in English, some in another language. How
do I fix this? Very strange. I think that during my login attempt that
didn't work out that it changed languages, maybe it was then?? Anyway,
 would love to fix this.

 Thanks.

MP3s should be accepted with no problem, so I'm curious: what is happening?

I would not recommend converting your MP3s into another format until all
other troubleshooting steps are exhausted. Since it's a lossy format,
converting to another lossy format would further degrade the quality of
 your
media. Converting to a lossless format, such as WAVE or Apple Lossless,
would take up a lot of extra space with no quality gain.

So what is happening when you try to import the problematic files?

Okay, I am tired of fighting with iTunes on what format it will except
and what one it won't. I have tried to import MP3 files, it will

 issues at all?
That way I can batch convert my whole media library in to that format
and be done with it. Thanks.
