Can't keep focus on money reader

2014-11-15 Thread Eddie Salcido

Sent from my iPhone hello everyone.
Every time I open money reader, it throws me right back into the app switcher
when I double tap on it. I have turned the phone off, close the app switcher,
closed all the apps, everything. Any thoughts?

Well carriers may hate this but unlike the competitor there's nothing they
can do as Apple has full control over the hardware and software. I am
looking forward to the Facetime audio feature as well but do wonder if we
all have to use iOS 7 in order to take advantage of this or will it be
backwards compatible so say you make a Facetime audio call to somebody who
is still on iOS 6 would it perhaps disable the video at theirs as well as my
end who knows. I hope so as not everybody can be expected to upgrade to iOS
7. Just my £0.02 worth anyway.

RE: Listening to Voiceover

2013-05-30 Thread Eddie Salcido
I know this message is ridiculously late in response, Brice, but I have my
ear buds with me all the time and can enjoy complete privacy with my screen
curtain on as well. Even in very noisy environments, you can hear the
speech if it is turned up loudly enough. I like the buds because you can
still hear people and still be aware of your surroundings while texting or
playing around with your apps. I find the buds particularly handy when I'm
listening to blind square tell me where I am. If done safely, you can even
cross busy streets with only one ear bud in if you take out the bud in your
ear where the parallel traffic comes from.

The only time I have blind square coming from my external speaker is when I
am in a cab. This lets the driver know that he can't pull one over on me.

Hi,

I'm curious to know how you all listen and use your phones when you're
out in public. Do you use earbuds and an earpiece, or do you turn the
speech down low and do your best?

In noisy environments most people can just look down at their phones.
If you use speech, you want to be able to hear the speech without
everyone else hearing it or becoming distracted by it, too. Sometimes
I'll just hold the phone up toward my shoulder/ear and type/text so I
can keep the volume down real low for privacy, but this looks really
odd and unprofessional. I've thought about grabbing an earpiece or
earbuds, but I usually forget, or it's just something else to charge
and keep track of.

What works for you?

I keep mine in my pocket when I'm out and about. I'll pull them out of my
pocket and leave them on a table if I'm at home or in the office. My pockets
are fairly capacious, and I don't worry about their durability at all
keeping them in my pocket like I do.

 Hi Brice,

As Chuck and Richard already pointed out, a Bluetooth earpiece is one
solution. But as you say, it is another item you have to make sure is
charged up and I personally don't like it if I have to do any amount
of typing. I do own one and use it at times, but first of all I feel
I look like a nurd (no offense to anybody who wears it all day) and I
just don't like the small lag when I am typing, it makes typing on
the virtual keyboard even slower as it is. There is also a third
reason why I don't want to have it in all day and that is the fact
that nobody really knows if it is all that healthy.

I very much prefer the Apple earpods, they are less conspicuous and
even lighter than even the lightest Bluetooth earpiece. Depending on
where I am and what I am doing I often just have the right one in my
ear since it has the microphone and remote and I just have the left
one hanging around my neck. It's become total habit for me to grab
them in the morning, wrap them around my hand and put them in my
 pocket.

In short, if you are in public and you don't want anybody to hear
your phone a headset or earpiece of some sort is your only option. I
personally wouldn't be too worried about people listening to a text
message I might type, somebody really would have to pay attention to
put together what you are typing if they hear a letter at a time, but
of course if it's noisy a headset really is the way to go and it has
the additional benefit that you can keep your phone on your belt or
in your pocket when a call comes in.

 Regards,
 Sieghard

RE: An Unusual Way to Turn on the iPhone 5

What is the usual way to turn it on? Sometimes, a few things work, like
holding the power button until voiceover comes on, or pressing it several
times.

Subject: An Unusual Way to Turn on the iPhone 5

Hello, everyone.

I just purchased an iPhone 5 to replace my 3GS. If the phone is turned off,
I can turn it on by simply plugging the charging cable into the phone's
port. I don't have to press the on/off button, and I don't have to plug
the other end of the charging cable into a power outlet. Do other iPhone 5s
work this way? Needless to say, if I wish to run the phone on its battery,
I use the traditional way of turning it on via the on/off button.

Thanks for all help.

Hi Eddie, It's my understanding that with Verizon you cannot use data at the
same time as you make phone calls. So if you are on a call and trying to use
an app which utilizes data like Blind Square does, then perhaps it won't
work. Once you get off the call, then the world should resume being round
again.

Hope that helps.

I've seen some strangeness behavior with the gps and/or with Bluetooth when
the iPhone is inside a pocket and other things are by it. Supposed the
interference is supposed to be minimal, but still. Do you have keys or
something else in there? Loose Change perhaps? It sounds kind of far-fetched
I know, but when you are talking electronics and depending on orbiting
satellites in the sky,k who knows. Maybe where you are walking is near a lot
of glass, which can also distort gps signals and maybe this is causing the
weirdness with Blind Square. Have you tried another app which may do
similar? Ariadne GPS perhaps? And see if it's cutting out as well? Just some
thoughts.

I can tell Siri to open most apps without a problem. Open notes

take me back to the home page, or open the app switcher? My student has
very limited hand movement, and the more words she can use, the better.

RE: searching the app store

2013-05-01 Thread Eddie Salcido
Dear Fred and list,
I am saying this publicly because I feel that such a need has arisen. Fred,
you are completely out of line and are acting like an absolute bully on this
list, attempting to intimidate people with your condescending attitude
without having empathy for people's situations. Many on this list struggle
with issues in addition to blindness on a daily basis. Your poisonous
attitude is not condusive to healthy dialogue. You might have suggested the
manual to Ray without the additional snarky comments you feel so compelled
to make. While I agree that people ought to try and research for themselves
whenever possible, not everyone does this and it isn't necessary for you to
keep pointing it out in such a way as to club everyone over the head with
your attitude of superiority.

To Raul, I give you my word that this is my first and last Email on this
subject. I fully understand that the consequences of this E-mail include
removing me from this list, and I completely support your decision should
you choose to exercise that option.
Sincerely,
Eddie Salcido

Ray, may I suggest a book to you? It is called Getting started with the
iPhone by Anna Dresner and Dean Martineau. It is available in several
formats from the National Braille Press. I suggest this book because if you
had read it before you received your phone or had it when your phone
arrived, many, many, many, many of the multitude of questions which you have

posed to the list in the last three weeks or so could have been answered
without having to send what I figure to be somewhere near 200 messages to
the list. I am not suggesting that you not ask questions, only that you give

some thought to making use of a resource which is easily available to you
and save the difficult questions for the list.

What I have tried to do is use the ITunes application to search for the

without success to find them I ended up going to either itunes.com or the

the app. I suspect this is neither a simple or smart way to do this How
is it done if it can be

Ouchy. I would not under any circumstances listen to a book or music while
walking around my neighborhood. The only thing I have turned on is blind
square, and I keep that at a reasonable volume level so I can hear the
sounds of traffic, cars backing out of driveways, people walking bye, ETC.
Additionally, when I cross streets, I take one ear pud out of my ear so I
can hear my traffic surge completely unhindered.Eddie

my iPhone in it. It works very well and I can use the clip to hold it in

Am important factor you are missing is the fact that you will often have to
very steadily hold the phone's camera next to the object for about 5 to 7
seconds before it speaks. Don't forget lighting, distance, etc. Try first
experimenting with very, very common object such as cereal boxes and other
flat objects as DVD covers of popular movies. Other apps such as TapTapSee
are more responsive.

use the app with the following settings:

Double tap the top left button so the flash is off; this means that when I
run my finger over the button VO reads, flash off.

Re the bottom right button: when I run my finger over it it should say
 video camera.

I should tap the flash off button to turn the flash on only if I am not
getting any results and I suspect the reason is insufficient lighting. Is
 this correct?

 Hi Sandy,

The way you described the location what is on the iPhone screen indicates
that you are in video mode. The flash It button will toggle on/off the
apps flash on the camera. There are times that I need additional light.
 The
amount of distance, that one needs from the object will vary depending on
the size of the object that you want Talking Goggles to read. For example,
when using the app with my computer screen, I was about 2-3 inches away.
Also, I treaT Talking Goggles as an OCR app in regards of keeping the
 iPhone
levvel and centering it over the object that I want it to read. I believe
that good lighting is essential, so there is less of a chance of the app
 crashing. HTH.

 Best,

 Eileen

I am working with this app and not getting any results. I have the
 following settings:

Flash Button: When I touch (but not tap) the top left button VO says
Flash. It is my understanding that this means the flash is on.

Camera Copy 1 Button: When I touch (but not tap) it VO says, stop. This
leads me to believe that some kind of photo action is going on? I don't
know what to call it since it's not really taking a picture; there is no
 sound of a clicking shutter.

Button at bottom right: if I touch (but not tap) it VO says, still
 camera,
which leads me to believe that the video Camera is activated and tapping
 it
will change it to Still Camera. Is that correct?

The only time I hear a shutter clicking is when I toggle the bottom right
button to still camera, which converts the middle button from stop to
take picture. But it's my understanding that to get the app to ID things

 a
photo is not necessary. What am I either misunderstanding or doing
 wrong?

also, what is the purpose of the record option? What would I want to
 record?

Luckily, the Daily News app in my area is free, and so is the L.A. Times.
I'm wondering however, if these are scaled down versions of the paper that
subscribers pay for.

for any subscription of any kind. So as for me I'm just going to stick with
NFB newsline. It works.

Resets was RE: Strange-Apple earpods won't work on iPhone but are not defective

Hello listers. Since Marcy brought this up, I have a reset question. Does
the soft reset function delete all message data and other data from the I

Try sending down and restarting your phone. Next step would be to do a
reset, a soft reset, holding down the lock button and the home button at the
same time for 10 seconds, let go, and wait for the phone to reboot. If that
doesn't work, you may have to restore the phone, To its factory settings,
but hopefully one of those other steps will do the trick.

By the way, have you tried another set of headphones in the iPhone?

What is weird is that the earphone jack is not dead because some cheapy

I do have a Blue Ant earphone but can't use it for listening to my audio

People mention the audio drop in tunein radio while texting. The way I

Øyvind,

You're right, Ootunes is due for an update. That said, I can tell you that
the developer remains committed to providing prompt support to users of the
app. The directory is extremely comprehensive and there are no accessibility
issues like you find in TuneIn. The only downside is that unlike Tunein,
Ootunes doesn't use location services so that it must remain in the
foreground if you want a scheduled alarm/recording to play.

This makes me a bit skeptic since it looks like ooTunes is no longer

I've not noticed any issues. I've noticed to small issues for several
months which I have raised with them and I'd be interested to know if
anyone else has them as they ocurr on my ipad mini and iphone 4s.
There is a very very slight delay when typing whilst the radio is
playing. I think other audio apps are also causing the same issue but
I need to check that. Also, when the radio audio is reduced for voice
over speech to be heard, when it goes louder again it doesn't fade
back up but there is a tiny little break in the audio then it jumps
back up. I have reported both these issues to Tune In Radio. The
keyboard lag is just enough that it does actually make quite a
difference when typing long messages and I end up pausing the radio
 while I type

Patti, you're a kind soul. I feel like I have some of that patience with
others, but not to the extent that you do. I'm all for helping others, as
long as they try to learn as we go. However, there is a point when one has
to do for themselves. I live a very full life, surrounded by sighted
people, and there's been more than one occasion in which I'm complaining
about all the blind bums, and my friends and family have had to gently
explained to me that just because I have a lot of self-confidence doesn't
mean that everyone else does and just because blind people don't/can't
always learn/do for themselves doesn't make them lazy. So, long story
short, I respect Patti's view, but probably feel more as Fred does.
Having said that though, there will be A LOT less traffic and confusion if
everyone would just get along. Everyone's free to ask questions, just as
everyone is free to answer them or not. We're all on this list to gain
support and knowledge from other IOS users. If a particular topic doesn't
interest you, DELETE is the key. It takes way less time to hit Delete a
few times than to draft a complaint about a topic for which you have no
concern in the first place.

Hi

One experiment is to turn the light on at the highest level. You will be
surprised by on how fast the the battery drain runs out. So, turning the
screen light down to 30% or less will increase the battery life
considerable. With this setting i could listen to text from the the internet
and email with batteridriven headphones for 3 ours and a decrease of power
at 40%. Not bad, but it was with battery driven headphones.

I don`t think i can use gps more than 2.5 ours. I am curious regarding using
only iPhones built in GPS receiver vs. a battery drive external GPS like
garmin gloe or something. I am planning to use the iPhone with GPS this
summer from tim to time. 6-7 ours sometimes. With a cafe break or two.
Learning the name of some streets in my city. Have been lazy lately.

So the amount of light and GPS usage are the two most current suckers on the
iPhone.

Take care

I Next Bus loses speech.

2013-04-11 Thread Eddie Salcido
Hello folks. I've got an I phone five and sometimes when I open I Next Bus,
the speech turns off and I can't get it back on. Do I have to delete this
app and re install it?

Eddie

RE: Blindsquare update.

2013-04-11 Thread Eddie Salcido
Mine installed in less than a minute. I like the new information given by
the look around feature, though I wish that it would announce the specific
names of places instead of the categories.

Hi, I got the app update just fine. Remember it's rather large. You should

be on wi-fi when updating, or you should do it from your iTunes program
 directly on your computer.

There appears to be an update to Blindsquare but I, for some reason, am
not able to download that animal. Anyone else having this issue?

 Thanks all over the place.
