RE: One incoming call routed to two different phones

2015-12-19 Thread Iolaire
Hi. Thanks. Fortunately the issue isn't a problem for me as I live alone and
don't have to be concerned about sharing my phone calls or texts with anybody
else. The 5c is my backup phone and remains turned off 90 percent of the time
and only gets turned on once in a while to keep the sim active. However, I
will save your instructions in case my circumstances change or anybody else
elsewhere has a problem with this issue, thanks again. Walter.

Hi Walter,

Yes, this Is normal behavior if you use the same Apple Id on two iOS devices,
but you can turn this off.

Many people like this feature especially if they have an iPhone and iPad. An
iPad normally can’t receive phone calls, but if you use the same Apple Id you
could have your iPhone plugged in to charge in the bedroom and sit in the
living room with your iPad and still accept incoming phone calls.

The same goes for messages and this can also be turned off.

Calls on other devices”.

For phone calls, go to Settings > Phone, then double tap where it says “Calls
on other devices”.

On the next screen you first of all have to turn this on or off. If it’s off
then you won’t have any further options.

Underneath the On/Off switch you have the following explanation:

Use your iPhone’s cellular connection to make and receive calls on devices
signed into your iCloud account when they are nearby and on WiFi.

If you turn it on, you then also have a list of available devices and you can
turn each of them on or off independently. For example:

You may have bought a new iPhone 6S, but you still have your old 5S for use on
WiFi only and maybe you also have an iPad. If this is the case and you use the
same Apple Id for iCloud on all three devices, you would see both the iPhone 5S
and the iPad listed here and you can turn both on or maybe just turn on the
iPad and turn off the iPhone etc.

For messages, go to Settings > Messages and double tap on “Text Message
Forwarding”. The explanation underneath reads as follows:

Allow your iPhone text messages to also be sent and received on other devices
signed in to your iMessage account.

If you double tap on Text Message Forwarding, you then can again turn on or off
any devices independently which show up in the list.

This is a bit different than the phone calls since for phone calls you have to
use the same Apple Id for the iCloud account and here you have to use the same
Apple Id for iMessages.

This is why it’s important to not use the same Apple Id even if you share the
same Apple Id for app store and iTunes purchases. It is no problem to use a
common Apple Id for app store and iTunes but to sign into iMessage and Facetime
with a separate Apple Id which you only use for that purpose. This way each
person in a family can have their own Apple Id for iMessage and Facetime, but
use the same Apple Id to make and share purchases.

Even if you disable text message forwarding, if you use the same apple Id for
iMessage and/or Facetime on two devices and let’s say you have one device and
your wife has the other, if somebody sends you an iMessage to your Apple Id it
would still show up on both devices. In other words, you want to make sure your
girl-friend does not do that *smile*.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Hi. I don't have hearing problems and I'm not familiar with those who wear
hearing aids, so know nothing about them. My question originates from a
foundation of ignorance. Do modern hearing aids not have the capability to
receive signals via Bluetooth? If this is so then would the headphone socket
be redundant if those who use hearing aids could use the Bluetooth feature?
I am of course referring here to general day-to-day tasks, not listening to

Hi Scott, since this is a mainstream issue as well as an accessibility one,
I've used the feedback form.
In my view, it would be good to see AppleVis take an editorial position on
something as significant to many of us as this, in the same way that Cult of
mac has done, where they are opposing the jack's removal. I agree with you that
a bunch of blind people won't stop this on their own, but it's an unpopular
decision with many very loyal Apple fans, as the Apple fan sites have shown, so
there is quite a coalition of concerned people forming.
I for one was grateful to AppleVis for blowing the whistle on the inaccessible
App Store a few iOS versions ago, and I believe it may not have been fixed
before release if AppleVis hadn't done the right, brave thing and taken a
public stand. This is another such time where it could help to make a
difference.
The jack has to go sometime, but hopefully, it can go at a point when the
entire industry has agreed on a better standard.
I certainly appreciate you organising to have AppleVis retweet the link to my
blog post, and I'd be happy for AppleVis to use the text. I personally don't
see much point in starting another discussion on another user forum, it's some
sort of editorial post I was looking for. I believe at times like this, we all
as a community need to pull together to work towards what's in our common
interest.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. I know you're a hearing aid user too and
that you're concerned.

Do I think this will eventually happen? Yes I do. Do I think that we
can stop a multi-million dollar corporation which has obviously been
conceiving of this for years? No I do not. It's certainly good to
email the Accessibility Team at Apple to share your concerns, as I've
already done, and I'm sure you have.
Finally, AppleVis is a community driven website, which means you have
the option of posting your thoughts to the forum. If AppleVis is
failing in its duty, as you say, why not fix that by starting the

2015-12-08 Thread Iolaire
Hi. I understand your fears; I used to have an nokia 2210 navigator and it was
small and a really great size. I now have the iPhone 6 and it is true it is
much larger but it is also much, much thinner. I have it in a really sturdy
case with a screen protector and although this increases the size dramatically,
you do get used to it and on the occasions I have to take the phone from the
case, the phone seams very small in comparison so it is really a matter of
getting used to it. The phone on it's own is rigid and there is no danger of
bending, I think that issue was with the 6+ but not the 6. The price certainly
is an issue but it depends on how much storage you want. Obviously an 8gig 6
is going to be substantially cheaper than a 128gig 6 so you will find prices
vary depending on capacity. I don't think Apple are doing the 6 in 128gig any
more, or at least they didn't have on their web site and when I went to the
apple store, they only had one 128gig left, which I grabbed. Although I
wouldn't recommend it, you could go down the second hand rout and if you are in
the uk, you could keep an eye on Recycle it where I've seen a few iPhone 6's on
offer. Play.com is also a good option as well as Amazon if you want an
unlocked phone. The other options are to go for a contract with a carrier and
get a phone included in the package, it just depends on how much you can afford
and if you want your phone locked to that network. I'm with Vodafone and have
a good sim only deal, it is a 12 month contract and I get unlimited texts,
unlimited calls to geographic and non-geographic numbers and 10gig of data per
month. Plus I get spotify and other movie and entertainment packages which are
normally premium services but I get them free for 3 months. This costs me
£18.50 (around $28) per month. So there are loads of options out there but I
can assure you the iPhone 6 is rigid. Walter.

Hello,
I never had a phone before, but in general, I want something that can fit into
a pocket, easily be hidden, and fit into 1 hand. I've seen a 6, and a 6 plus,
the latter is certainly way way way too big for my likings.
Getting used to it,, I think you're right. However, as mentioned above, I have
used note takers, iPads, and I now want something tiny. I am able to carry
around things like a braille sense, but still, want something small, or at
least, smaller. At this point, generally, a 5S with 32 GB can be bought for
about £200, with a top up card. I think that will be where I start, and will go
up. I don't keep music, but I do think you're really restricted with the 16 GB
model, since its actually 12 GB.
I am actually in the UK, and second hand, or phone shops, is what I am looking
into. I actually have a question about your contract. Is the 10 GB 3G or 4G
only for 3 months, as well?

In truth the only real advantage is if you want to avoid iTunes because these
drives allow you to transfer files from PC to iPhone, iPad or iPod without
having to use iTunes. The iStick I have is completely accessible and easy to
use but you will need the app to use it and the app can be found in the app
store. By the way, the the transfer is done by means of a copy and paste

Last time I looked at these kind of drives, they were ridiculously expensive
for the storage capacity they have. Also, I wonder about people's experiences
with them. I had the idea that they are rather Limited with respect to what you
can actually do with the material that is on the drive. I would welcome hearing
experiences, especially if prices have come down on the drive themselves.

is not as I was in cummunication with them about it and they said they are not
accessible, well, the home screen is but nothing else so one needs to be
careful. The iStick by Gmobi is accessible, completely. Walter.

iStick, iFlash, and I think Kingston all do pen drives or thumb drives with a
Lightening connector at the opposite end to the
standard usb connector. iStick and iFlash both seem to have accessible apps to
use the material on said drives.

Subject: Thumb drives with the iPod touch 6?

Hello Listers:

I'm new to the list and have just become the owner of an iPod touch 6. So I
have many questions.

If I were to consider a keyboard, is the mini keyboard At Guys sells doable
without being too small to be practical and reasonably comfortable?

And I wonder if we can connect and play material from a thumb drive? Is
there a special adaptor for that?

Thank you.

Lois Goodine.

iCloud backup

2015-11-19 Thread Iolaire
Hi. Can somebody answer a question for me please. I have an iPhone 6,
128gig model. I got an iStick and placed around 15gig of music on the
phone. Every time I charge the phone I'm told the phone hasn't been backed
up for x number of weeks, if I recall it says there is not enough space. I
went to settings and I have the default storage of 5gig so I am well over
the limit just with my music. This music is not in the iPhone music app but
it is stored in the iStick app. Now although the iCloud settings said I had
5gig of storage, when it tells me what I have left it says 4.9gig. Now I'm
wondering, why is the phone saying I have 4.9gig of storage left but it
then tells me the phone hasn't been backed up because there is not enough
space? When it comes to backing up, is it all or nothing? but if that is
the case then what is the 100mg that is up there since it says I have 4.9gig
left. If it were all or nothing then I would imagine it would say I have
5gig left. Answers I understand will be appreciated. LOL. Walter.

RE: hi i'm looking for a gps app. to use wile travelling.

2015-11-18 Thread Iolaire
Hi. You say what you use is not very helpful. Could you tell us, what is it
you want from an app? Do you want turn by turn directions to a particular
destination? Do you just want to know what roads you are on, what junctions
you pass etc? Or do you want an app that will give you points of interest? In
addition, you say when you are travelling but are you travelling on foot, buss,
train or plane or by car or a combination of these. Some appes are better than
others in these areas so if you could let us know it would be helpful. I
personally like Apple Maps, especially for turn by turn directions to a
destination but for what's around you, ViaOptaNav is pretty good and is free
but Blind square is better but is not free. Walter.
