Clock - Volume

2013-04-16 Thread Irene Elbourn at TAFN
Listers, Being a fairly new user, I am still learning my way around some of
the apps available on the IPod Touch 4th Generation. Most aspects of the
clock app work well, but the alarm sound (whichever one I choose) is
extremely quiet, even when the IPod is set at full volume. The volume
softens as soon as the screen appears containing the alarm sound choices.
Please can anyone suggest a way of stabilizing the volume?

IPod Touch reset

2013-04-14 Thread Irene Elbourn at TAFN
Listers,

My IPod Touch fourth generation (with latest software updates) and
Brailliant Braille Display have lost bluetooth connection. Despite checking
everything I can think of, reconnection is not happening. Maybe, I need to
reset the IPod but the way to do this seems to have changed since I was told
the procedure to follow. According to my memory, the way to reset was to
press the home button until VO said something like reset, then to double
tap and wait for the IPod to shut down and restart. Now, When I press the
home button, something entirely different happens. I am asked if I want to
make a facetime call. Please can anyone help?

Hearing that you have 80 titles purchased from Kobo is certainly

I find it really easy to buy books from Kobo. I just open the Kobobooks.com
page and enter an author's name or a book title in the search field. I click
the Go button and the results appear as level 3 headings. I admit, I do this
on my Mac and not on my iPhone.

Kobo is probably my favourite app of all as I'm a voracious reader and the
books are affordable. I have over 80 Kobo books in my library now.

Some things that you can do to make the process more efficient if
 you
 want to just use braille:
use the spotlight feature (hit cmd-h from the home screen) to
 search for
 the app that you need.
If you want to search for text within an app, for example safari
 but
really any hap doubletap the screen three times and you will get the
item choser with an edit field, if you want to cancel the item choser
you have to use the command that emulates the home button (cmd-h).
I am still experimenting with selecting/cutting or copying text
 while
using a braille display which i believe would be a lot more
efficient, at least for me, then doing it by using the touch screen.
Things that are difficult or that you cant do (to my knowledge) by
 just
 using the braille display):
If you are using a word processor and you have to leave the app and
 then
go back to it then the vo focus within the document will be lost.
This is not limited to braille display though.
Double tap and hold is one of the gestures already mentioned that
 you
 cannot do, to my knowledge.
Also, if you have a table index and you want to doubletap and hold
 and
move up and down i dont know how to do this on a braille display.
Furthermore if you have lists that you need to change by swiping up
 and
down (for example to change a value in the standard iphone alarm
clock) i dont know if you can do this. I have several apps that make
use of this gesture and now have to go to the touchscreen and turn
 the
 speech on.
If anyone has any more tips/suggestions to make more effective use
of your iphone and just braille display this would be greatly
 appreciated

To add to Irene's response on Braille commands, it should be possible to
activate the Item Chooser and to select/manipulate text with your Braille
display. I use a Classic Focus 40 Blue but *think* the commands are the same
on the Brailliant BI series; however, it would be best to check using VO
Keyboard Help. Perhaps, there are commands available using the command keys.
The commands I use are:

SPACE with DOTS 2-4: Activate Item Chooser Manipulating Text: Choose
characters/words/lines with the rotor using commands for your display
provided by Irene, then:
SPACE with DOTS 2-5-6: select text by the unit specified by the rotor SPACE
with DOTS 2-3-5: unselect text by the unit specified by the rotor SPACE with
DOTS 2-3-5-6: select all SPACE with DOTS 1-4: copy text SPACE with DOTS
1-3-4-6: cut SPACE with DOTS 1-2-3-6: paste

Hope this is helpful!

Regards,

Hi Kamal,
You have to do this via
settings/general/accessibility/voiceover/braille. It will tell you that
bluetooth has to be turned on and it will do so. Then you will, after a few
seconds see the braillant and yu will have to hit the pair button.
I am interested on how you can pair it with jaws on a windows machine though
since I have not gotten that to work yet but that is off-topic.

You say that you've reset the phone but I wonder if you have your apps from

They don't automatically empty just because you reboot the phone. If you
don't know how to do this, give me a call tomorrow afternoon and I'll talk

more now. This can often solve that problem with a particular app.

RE: Stuck in playlist on spotify

2013-03-09 Thread Irene Elbourn at TAFN
Hi Peter,

Thank you for your reply. Your instructions have done the trick. I have a
feeling that a friend is accessing my playlists and doing some editing. If
I am correct, is there a way I can prevent access?

Hi Irene,

There are two things you can do.
Double tap and hold, after the tone swipe with 1 finger from left to right.
Then you can select something else in the top row, for example search.
This is the way a normal user should make the menu item visible.

The other way is just clicking on the open sidebar button, but it seems that
this method doesn't work every time.

Please has anyone a suggestion as to how I can rectify this problem?

Neal, yes and no.
Doing a two-finger double tap starts your music playing but this in-turn
does stop the Skype call. So you can actually do this by doing two
two-finger double taps. :)

I want to give people more tips on this app and specifically the latest
update. When you double tap on something in search results to have it play,
it often does not or it may not ever go automatically to the now playing
screen. This could be viewed as a feature or a bug or just something to be
indifferent to. It is no problem though. IT shows the track and artest name
in the bottom left cornor of the screen when it is playing after you double
tapped on it from search results or whatever listing possibly. There is a
button to pause the playing track in the bottom right cornor at that point.
Double tap on that artest or track name in the bottom left cornor and there
you go, your now playing screen comes up. Then double tap the np info button
in the top left cornor and you get more options on your now playing screen.
Also now when you are in the search screen, there is a side menu button near
the top left of the screen. Double tapping that brings up a menu that is
mostly different parts of the app you can navigate to from there. Your play
lists, search, settings, and some others. The app has a little bit of a
complex navigation path, but if you learn it, it works really well and this
update has improved accessibility in my opinion. It does not look like they
meant to, although who knows, but just how they changed things seems to work
a little bit better.

I understand that if you jailbreak you have to be careful about updates, but
for those who are not jailbroken and don't plan to do so I think it's more
or less a no-brainer to decide to update. I doubt Apple would suddenly
release a minor update which breaks Voiceover and ultimately a new more
major update comes out and just about everybody on this list who has an
iPhone especially if it's a 4S or 5 will update anyways. Even if an update
fixes a specific issue which maybe I didn't even notice or if it's just a
security fix I would still go ahead and do it just as I do all my Windows
updates. In many ways iPhone owners are very lucky this way because being
able to update to the latest version of Android or Windows Phone is not even
an option for the vast majority of people who have such devices because they
are either not given the option to update or the update only works for a
small number of the latest phones.

RE: Spotify

2013-02-11 Thread Irene Elbourn at TAFN
I have Spotify Premium app on my Ipod Touch 4. I have no difficulty with
saving individual tracks to my playlists, nor with sending individual tracks
to other people; but I have not been able to find a way to save a complete
album to a playlist, unless it has been sent to me by another Spotify user.
Equally, I have not been successful in forwarding a complete album to
another user. If I am not expecting too much from the app, please can
someone tell me how to save a complete album to a playlist and, if it is
possible, how to forward a complete album to another Spotify user.

I have a paid premium subscription. I need to take a look but I wonder if
the album just simply hadn't downloaded yet when you checked the button?

I did place an album in a playlist, there is a grayed out button

I think the downloading albums thing is to do with downloading
offline so you can listen when you have no internet signal. As you
can probably tell this is a feature I don't play with much but I
think you would put the album in a play list and it would download
that way. I stream most of my music on Spotify including radio which
can be accessed from the bottom row of tabs, the second from the right.

 Hello all,

I was wondering if there are any Spotify Users on the list. I've
read what AppleVis has to say about the app. I've downloaded it and
it's true that there are some unlabled buttons but one can fiddle
 with it and it's usable.

My question is this, I'm currently using the free 48 hour trial. I
can look up artists albums on my iPhone 4S running iOS 6.0.1 and
play them -- streaming them. It was my understanding that if one
pays the $9.99 per month that one can download the albums, is this
right?
I've looked at the website and that seems to confirm that, but I
can't figure out how in the app I can, either on my iPhone or iPad 3rd
Gen.

Plus, I'm guessing that one can create play lists from the music you
look up. Is this correct? And can they be downloaded to the
iDevice as well? Maybe when one's just getting the free 48 hour
 trial one can only stream?

I think it's neat to be able to play an entire album or a song on
demand! I do have a lot of CD's that I can burn but my XP computer
is so slow and the process is slow, maybe once I get a new computer
 it won't be that slow!

Plus, after the trial expires if I don't choose to subscribe to the
service, does it function much like Pandora? and one can stream
radio stations. the only drawback I can see to this is that free
members are extremely limited to how much they can stream!
Something like 10 hours per month! If that be the case, I'd rather
 stick to Pandora or Songza!

 Thanks

 Katey
