There's an unconfirmed rumour from a source that has in the past been
credible, that the next generation iPhone will not include a headphone
jack, so Apple can make the phone thinner.
I'm pasting a blog post that I wrote and published on this subject 72
 hours ago. Here goes.

I like thin, lightweight technology, but it isn’t the only criterion that
determines what I use. If thin and light doesn’t give me the performance I
need, I’m happy to choose something heavier or bigger.

When the iPhone 6 Plus came out, I bought one. Initially, it seemed
absolutely enormous, and I thought I’d never
get used to it. Now I’m on the 6s Plus and would never go back to a
smaller iPhone. The battery life and the bigger screen for Braille screen
input make it the right choice for me.

After being a MacBook Air user for three years, I recently bought a
15-inch MacBook Pro with all the specs maxed out. It includes 16GB of RAM
 and 1TB solid state storage.

Compared to my MacBook Air, the Pro feels heavy and thick, and I’ve
therefore given it the nickname “The Big Kahuna”. But it fits in my
backpack just fine when I travel, it isn’t really that arduous to take
places, and the thing is, it goes like a rocket. I enjoy having OS X for a
few apps and functions, but Windows is still my primary operating system.
With a laptop this fast and powerful, I can run JAWS in a virtual machine
with superb results, and still tend to iMessages and FaceTime calls.

Sometimes I pick up my old MacBook Air and think, “oy, what have I done?
This thing is so cute!” But the performance factor soon

Re: Siri seems to have dementia

2015-07-23 Thread Margaret Booth
I don't have the same problems that you are having with Siri. When I ask Siri a
question or want to open an app he either doesn't respond or apologises that
the Internet isn't working. the Internet is working. I have to ask the question
or when I'm wanting to open an app

A couple of times. This doesn't happen all of the time. I can't wait for the
upgrade as long as they fix Siri.

Hi all, I wonder if any of you have had the following problem. I have
experienced a lot of situations where I will ask Siri a question and she will
say that she doesn’t understand the question. It’s more specific than that.
 Here is an example.
I ask Siri, “What is the latitude of Madison Wisconsin?”
Siri says, “I don’t understand the latitude of Madison Wisconsin.” So she
knows what I am asking, that is not where the breakdown occurs. I asked her
this yesterday and twice she gave me the same answer using the exact same
words I used in the question. On the third attempt, she gave me the answer.

So, what goes here. Is she becoming brain dead? Is three times the charm?
This has also happened on other questions lately. She repeats the question so
I know she understands and several attempts later, she will give me the
answer. I’ll likely report this to Apple, but I wondered if anyone else had
 seen this problem.

white and yellow pages. I found restaurant listings but was unable to locate
 menus.

 Thank you
 Juan

To do the trick is to ask Seri what the temperature is.
In the lower right hand corner pass the times of the day with the temperature
there is a weather channel button.
Click on the button that will open the internet or safari.
Once you open safari, hit the home button to close out of the net and it
takes you back to your home screen or back to the desktop as I like to call

I have the Iphone 6+. Not sure if this will work on other phones.
 I mean like the 5S and 6.

a friend of mine has a logitech keyboard for his iPhone 5. The problem he is
having with the keyboard is that when he is typing in any sort of edit field
with his keyboard the keys ding at him when he types and no text goes into
the edit field. it works when VO isn't on. what can he do to get the
keyboard typing in text in edit fields while VO is on. He told me it hasn't
been working properly with the OSI 7 and 8 upgrades.

Kindle, iBooks, and Nook books are DRM, Digital Rights Management, which

Voice Dream Reader can only read non-DRM books.

Subject: Audio Demo of the iOS 8 Speak Screen Feature

Hi everyone, a client of mine is a student who uses iBooks a lot. He was
getting frustrated with not having a method to listen to iBooks without
locking the screen and without notifications interrupting the book. After I
showed him how this was possible using the speak screen feature, he
suggested I do an audio presentation about this for others who didn't know
about this iOS 8 benefit. A lot of VoiceOver users think that Speak Screen
has no benefits for them, but it's a great feature. Here's my demo.

 Hi Brett,

I can do all of that with the native Mail app. You can add an “Unread”
mailbox to your list of mailboxes by double tapping on the Edit button when
you are in the main screen of the mail app.

If I am in my Inbox I can double tap on Edit at the top right and then
double tap on as many messages as I want to select them. Voiceover correctly
speaks whether they are selected or not. I then have 3 options across the
bottom of the screen, “Mark”, “Move” or “trash”.

I am an Outlook user on the computer, but I haven’t tried Outlook on the
iPhone and this is one case where I don’t see much of a reason why I would
want to since I think the implementation of the Mail app is very good and it
fully supports both Exchange accounts and Exchange Active Sync accounts.

I also think some of the new features in the mail app since iOS 8 are quite
nice like the ability to minimize a draft in order to look up information in
 a different email.

Hi, I rather like it. So far it seems faster than the default app to sort
 mail.

I don't, probably like many here, have time to read every message. With
outlook, you can double tap and hold, then slide right to get in to multi
selection mode. You can then scrol through your list of mail and double tap
the ones you want to select. After this is done, you can batch move or
delete them. In my opinion, this is a huge time saver.

To only show unread messages, first tap the Filter button, then choose
 unread.

 Hope this helps.

It absolutely is and it is by far the best OCR app for a blind person.
Before it was out a few very experienced iPhone users were very skeptical,
but I think even those people are all convinced that KNFB Reader blows
everything else out of the water. At $50 it is a bargain and if you were

Hi Margaret,

You can’t turn passcode off if you want to use Touch Id. Passcode is your fail
save, after all, what happens if for some reason the fingerprint reader doesn’t
unlock your phone. In this case and also after a reboot of the phone you will
have to enter your passcode. As Christopher pointed out, you manage both
passcode and touch Id in Settings. If you have a passcode you will have to
enter the passcode again as soon as you are trying to get into the passcode
area. This would prevent somebody from removing or changing the passcode if
they got hold of your phone while it was unlocked.

Setting up a fingerprint is simple, just tap to add a fingerprint and then
follow the instructions and place your finger onto the home button multiple
times. At some point when you are mostly done it will ask you to capture the
edges of your print and show a picture of a person holding an iPhone and you
have to first tap on continue, then do as instructed and capture the edges of
your print. When it is done you will get a message that you can now use your
fingerprint to unlock the phone.

The way I do this is to press the home button briefly, it still has to be
pressed so the phone wakes up and the touch Id sensor starts doing it’s thing.
I just press and let go and then lightly leave my thumb on the home button for
maybe a second or so and usually that is all it takes to unlock the phone. It
works super good, it’s typically very reliable and I’d say it works 100%
perfect at least 9 out of 10 times I use it.

Regards,

Sieghard

comes up when I turn on the phone. Can someone please tell me how to do this
and how do I turn on finger printing?

RE: beginner: questions

2014-10-08 Thread Margaret Booth
If you manage to turn off voice over there are 2 ways of bringing it back
without sighted help, One way is using Siri. Just as Siri to turn on voice over
and it works or do a three finger double tap this is a toggle gesture. If you
do a three finger double tap it will either turn on or off voice over. I hope
this helps.

What is the ap called that one can use to type in Braille on the screen?

Where can I get a sort of free manual helping with the learning process to use

Suggestions for a Grocery list

2014-08-08 Thread Margaret Booth
At present I am using Wunderlist and it has just been upgraded and now it
isn't accessible. Before it was upgraded I had no problems using the app. In
it I could create my own lists and share the lists with my husband and when
either of us entered a new item to the list it would show up on the other
persons phone.

What I want to know can anyone suggest any accessible apps that I could use
to create lists in such as grocery lists and I can share them with my
husband. When we share the lists and either I update the list or he does and
the updated items in the list show up on either of our iPhones.

Re: Changing from iMessage to Text message

2014-03-13 Thread Margaret Booth
I have worked it out how to change an iMessage to a text message.

What you have to do is to send the message as and iMessage and when it comes up
after it has been sent I did a one finger double tab and hold on the iMessage
and a menu comes up with copy and text. I double tapped on text and the message
was sent as a text message. I hope this helps anyone else who has the same
problem. I wish Apple stops changing little things like this.

RE: Answering Skype calls

2014-03-09 Thread Margaret Booth
I use Skype on my iPhone all of the Time. A 2 finger double tap won't work.
I tend to do a one finger double tap on the alert and then quickly do a one
finger swipe to the right to video and do a one finger double tap on this.
This is the only way I know to answer a Skype call.

Hi there I am not sure if anyone ever answered this. However I have seen
that changing the Skype notifications to Alerts instead of banners will
help. That way if you are getting a Skype call, you can double tap it from
the notification area on your lock screen and unlock your phone. The trick
is, you still have to find the answer button because a two finger double tap
will not work from what I understand. Not the best solution unfortunately.

If others on the list have better solutions for this, I am also all ears.

When I have Skype running and my phone is locked I can't answer a call
quickly enough and people hang up. As a consequence I don't know the steps
involved or if there is a quicker method. It takes me a few seconds to take
my phone out of my pocket and unlock it and, as I say, by that time they've
stopped ringing so I'm not sure what I'll see if I did get there in time.
Does anyone know if there is a way of answering directly from the home
screen (I do have it set up with Touch ID) or, if you do need to unlock the
phone first, what's the quickest way from that point to answer the call?
Would a two finger double tap work?
 Thanks for any help, Robin

Subject: 5 Helpful Safari Keyboard Shortcuts for iPad with iOS 7

The latest versions of Safari in iOS support new keyboard shortcuts to help
speed up web browsing and general web navigation for iPad and iPhone users
that have external keyboards attached to their devices. Those who have
memorized the keyboard shortcuts for Safari on the Mac will find these to be
identical to their OS X functions, except they’re in the highly mobile iOS
 world.

These will be primarily useful for an iPad with an external keyboard
connected through Bluetooth or a keyboard case, but technically they’d work
with an iPhone or iPod touch that has been connected to a secondary keyboard
as well, if you happen to use a much smaller screened setup. Requirements
are fairly straight forward, needing iOS 7.0 or later, and one must have a
physical keyboard synced to the device for the keystrokes to be available,
as the onscreen virtual keyboard does not (yet) offer this type of
 functionality.

 Safari Keyboard Shortcuts for iOS

Command+L to go to the URL bar and go to a new location / site, or Search On
 Page*
Command+T to open a new browser tab
Command+W to close the currently active browser tab
Command+R to refresh the contents of the currently active web browser tab
Command+. (period) to stop loading the current tab
 * The Command+L keyboard shortcut goes to the URL bar, but is also used to
perform a “Search on Page” like you would in new versions of Safari without
a keyboard attached. It’s a little quirky to get used to, going a bit like
this: hit Command+L to visit the Safari URL bar, then start typing the text
to search and match on the currently active web page for, finding the
matched results below everything else on the list, below all the other
keyword matches, found under the “On This Page” section. Search On Page is
incredibly helpful and widely used, and this could use some improvement in
upcoming versions of iOS, whether you use an external keyboard or not.

Of course, iOS keyboard shortcuts are not limited to Safari, and there are
actually quite a few core iPad keyboard shortcuts and commands which cover
everything from switching apps, navigating the iOS dock and multitasking
screen, launching apps, using the Home button, and even moving around and
selecting onscreen elements. Many users think of the iPad as a primarily
consumption orientated device, but once you learn a few keyboard shortcuts
and attach a wireless keyboard, it can function quite well for emailing, web
browsing, writing, and many other tasks that don’t require a complete
windowed desktop-centric computing experience. One preferred productivity
trick I use is to set an iPad against something at eye level while standing,
and use it to setup a quick standing desk workstation, which can not only
aid productivity for many tasks, but is also much healthier than sitting
constantly. Even if you only use such an iPad setup for selective web
browsing or sending off quick emails, it’s a good start at not only
bettering your health but also getting used to the iPad as a unique
 production environment.

These new Safari keyboard shortcuts were discovered by MacStories, along
with a handful of other handy keystrokes accessible with external keyboards
when used with the iOS Pages app and Mail app, be sure to check those out on
 MacStories too.

Find any other keyboard shortcuts for Safari in the iOS world? Let us know
 in the comments.

RE: Dictating without the dictation button -- how to do it?

2013-09-22 Thread Margaret Booth
Hi! Kimba

What you need to do is to go to the edit field that you want to dictate in
and double tap on it to activate the edit field. Once the edit field is
activated do a two finger double tap in the edit field and wait until you
hear a tone and start dictating your message and once finished do another
two finger double tap. Your message will be put into the edit field. I hope
this helps.

Hi All,

I used to use dictation all the time in ios6. But now with ios7 there is no
dictation button. I read a blog post that described how to do it and they
made it sound like the greatest advancement ever, but I just can't get the
hang of it. My phone never goes into dictation mode no matter what I do. I
usually just end up moving the cursor or playing music or whatever.

Can anyone give me a sep by sep description of how to get dictation going
again?

Thanks,
Kimber

RE: Handwriting - how to get a comma

2013-09-22 Thread Margaret Booth
I sent you a email previously saying that I can't do a full stop in the hand
writing mode but I have now worked out how to do it. I'm the same I can't
work out how to do a coma. I can do a lot of the other symbols. I have
worked out how to do a dash. What I do is to draw a very small line across
the screen and this seems to work.

I am enjoying playing around with the hand writing mode.

Subject: Handwriting - how to get a comma

Hello,

I am quite intriqued by the new handwriting feature and have been practicing
a bit. I have a feeling that if a person knows how to write which I do since
I lost my sight at the age of almost 17, this could become a rather
efficient method of text input. I actually don't understand why Apple does
not make this available to all iPhone users instead of restricting it to
Voiceover users.

They could have made Handwriting a keyboard choice so to speak. This way if
you added the Handwriting keyboard to your list of keyboards, one could
have simply tapped on the keyboard button at the bottom to switch to it, but
maybe they have their reasons.

Anyhow, I would like to know if somebody has figured out how to best insert
a comma. I know of course I have to switch to the punctuation area and I
have managed to figure out how to do most commonly used symbols like a
period, semicolon, colon, question mark, exclamation mark, Dollar sign, @
symbol, underscore etc.

I am still having a bit of trouble with a dash, if you draw a horizontal
line across it always interprets it as an underscore.

I don't think I managed to get a comma done more than once and I have no
idea how I did it. If I simply draw a line down the screen it inserts this
as a vertical line, if I give the line a bit of a curve it usually inserts
a right parenthesis. Any explanations are appreciated.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Re: Dont recommend updating to IOS 7

2013-09-20 Thread Margaret Booth
I upgraded my iPhone 5 to IOS7 yesterday afternoon and I'm finding IOS7 great.
I'm not having any problems with it at all. I can understand your concerns.

 problems i have in IOS7
 1. slower. i have noticed on my iphone 5 voice over seems to run slower. it
seems to be more sluggish on speech and flicking through applications. the
phone also takes a half or more of a second to lock when i click the lock
 button.

 2. voice over sounds are different. on the ipad voice over, voice over would
always make a sound when you flick from different frames or areas on the
page. for example, if you are on an ipad and in the messages application, try
flicking from the message display area down into the text message box where
you type new messages. you do this by flicking right. on the ipad voice over
always made a unique noice indicating that you have gone into a new area of
the screen. the iphone voice over never did this. well, on the new IOS 7 it
 now does. this annoying

 3. the side switch no longer silences flicking sounds. on IOS 6 the switch
above the volume buttons would silence the clicks made on voice over when one
flicks left or right. on the new IOS7 this switch has no effect on the
special clicks and noises associated with voice over.

 4. voice over looses focus. i have noticed, and perhaps it is just me, that
voice over sometimes looses focus on where you were last on the screen. it is
difficult to explain and perhaps i am the only one who has this problem. but,
sometimes when i am flicking right down a page, voice over appears to jump
back to the top or loose focus in some other manner. voice over was always
completely stable in IOS6 and i never had this problem. nor did i ever have
voice over read previously read aloud text at the wrong time when such text
was not being selected and should not have been read. again, difficult to
explain. but, i do not believe voice over is as stable as it used to be

 5. finally, i dont see any real feature enhancements. without any real
enhancements i wouldnt update. just my recommendation

keyboard not showing up in replying or composing a new email in Mail

2013-05-27 Thread Margaret Booth
Can someone please tell me how I can get my keyboard to show when I reply or
compose an email on my iPhone 5.

What happens is when I double click on reply or reply all on my iPHone and the
edit field is activated the keyboard doesn't show up. It also happens when I'm
composing a new email. What I want to know is where do I go to so my keyboard
shows so I can type things out.

Re: Listening to Voiceover

2013-05-25 Thread Margaret Booth
I always carry my apple head phones with me. I prefer to use them when I'm out
so no one knows what I'm doing.

In noisy environments most people can just look down at their phones.
If you use speech, you want to be able to hear the speech without
everyone else hearing it or becoming distracted by it, too. Sometimes
I'll just hold the phone up toward my shoulder/ear and type/text so I
can keep the volume down real low for privacy, but this looks really
odd and unprofessional. I've thought about grabbing an earpiece or
earbuds, but I usually forget, or it's just something else to charge
 and keep track of.

 What works for you?

RE: Deleting trash in mail on iPad 3

Yes you can. When in trash or in the bin folder which is on the iPhone 5
when you double tap on edit then down on the bottom of the screen delete all
comes up and you only need to double tap on delete all and all of the emails
are deleted. This is what I want to be able to tell my friend how to do on

all at once instead of selecting them one at a time. I hope this makes more

3 questions on New VIP folder in mail

2012-11-17 Thread Margaret Booth
I have three questions about the new VIP folder that is now on my Iphone 4
which I have updated to the last upgrade.
The first question I have is how do you add a person or email address into
the VIP folder when you first open it? I can't remember how I did it because
it has been a while since I've done it and a friend of mine asked me how to
do it.
The second question I've got is how do I add more people or email addresses
to the VIP folder once I've already have people in there for a while? I
can't find any button to add people.
The third question I've got is how do I delete an email address or person
out of my VIP folder to stop the email from going into this folder and
inbox?

 Vicky,

You cannot buy books in the app. Apple has put a stop to that about a year

you purchased either on the website with your computer or by going to the
mobile version of the website with Safari.

I don't think anything needs to be out of the running. I primarily use my
Mac with my iPhone a close second. Then comes my linux very close behind,
and then Windows 7 with Windoweyes, System Access and occasionally the Jaws
demo but my Windows system is just for fun or when all else fails. I had an
iPad 1 and didn't use it enough so gave it to a friend. I liked it; i just
found I didn't use it as much as I thought I would. But it doesn't mean i'll
never use an iPad again. Each person needs to use the combination of
equipment and software that works best for her/him and for most of us even
that isn't static; I'm always re-evaluating what works best for me and my
new braille display, even though it only has 18 cells, is changing the way I
do things on the Mac and iphone a lot. No, nothing ever needs to be out of
 the running.

Thanks for that but could you recommend a free daisy app. The reason for this
is that my daughter is going overseas and she wants to listen to a few of my
daisy books on her iPhone and she will only use it when she is travelling.

Suggestions for an accessible diary/journal app

2012-08-08 Thread Margaret Booth
Can anyone suggest an accessible diary or journal app for my iPhone that I
can use while I'm on holidays. I'm going overseas with my husband for a few
weeks and I want to be able to write down what I'm doing as I'm travelling.
I don't know if if it is possible that in the app there is an option to
email my entries to me. Thanks for anyone's help.
