This has been an issue for a long, long, long, long time... and it only seems to happen with some phones, and generally when the mute switch is on. Incredibly annoying... This is a public beta... there is nothing proprietary about it... You can delete an app by going to settings, General, Storage, and locating the app you want to remove. double-tapping on it will present you with some options. Delete is one of those options. Thanks. Re: Google Assistant is now an iPhone app
Hello, The google assistant is okay... it is great on Android, and is much better than Siri at contextualization. However, on iOS, the first bunch of words that are uttered by the assistant are presented at an extremely low volume, before volume increases. I attempted to play around with audio ducking options, however this did not fix the problem. Unfortunately, this is a huge issue when out and about and trying to hear what it says... while you can hear the content by using Voiceover, this is not always convenient, especially hand-free... speaking of hands-free, there should be a way to say okay google to trigger the assistant... there also should be a way to trigger the assistant with a long-press of the home button if a user chooses. In iOS, it seems that the only two options are using Siri, or voice commands, whatever that means. Anyway, if you are okay with the drawbacks of using this app at present, I do recommend it. Thanks. Re: Convince me guys IOS or no IOS
Hello, For me, an iOS device is like having the equivalent of both the best of Google and Apple in your pocket. Most of Google's services are on iOS, and in some instances, they run better on iOS than android. Both platforms are drawing near to each other on features I would say, but android is more refined and polished in my opinion. Android groups notifications so much better than iOS. Droid offers so much flexibility, while still giving you access to many of the same blindness apps. Android apps seem more uniform, with where buttons and controls are placed and such. Multi-tasking on android is so much better because you can truly get two apps running side by side. I guess that is called multi-window. Google continues to update and enhance accessibilwhy features. One huge benefit is that Google has web views and the screen reader as separate apps, which makes it so much easier to update when bugs are found. You often do not need to wait for an OS update. On the other hand, at the moment iOS braille support is much more refined, although this will change very soon. IPhones are more premium than many android phones, but not others. They receive updates for longer. They tend to just work without lots of battery drain, and general instability. IOs has more useful accessibility features, although Google continues to enhance their access offerings. Continuity is huge, and Google cannot match it, not even with Chrome OS. The closest you will get is by using timething like pushbullet. The apple ecosystem of peripherals for an iPhone is huge. Apple support is, by far, class-leading. Google does not have a uniform accessibility team company-wide, so different Google products will implement accessibility in different ways. I only hope they work more closely together in future. Apple's commitment to inclusion is company-wide, and includes the accessibility and usability of all of their apps and services, from the very first unboxing, and supports accessibility for even their development platform and any diagnostic modes in their products. Finally, one that many may not care too much about... IPhones are unsurpassed in most benchmarks, and what Apple can do with their hardware when software is written and designed specifically for that hardware is quite impressive. I do miss android... Apple has many quirks, and still not as much flexibility. I cannot customize an iUS device the same as an Android device. I have widgets on one page of my home screen, but I cannot move them around, and app devs seem to not have as much control over what widgets can be on Android. Notifications drive me insane... I would, at the very least, love an option to clear notifications by app, even if they are not categorized that way. I miss my app drawer... This idea that all apps show up on install on a page without the ability to have them auto-sorted or anything is annoying. I hate not having file explorer access, particularly if I connect my device to the computer and want to transfer files. I switched to iOS mostly for philosophical reasons, and I do enjoy updates, stability, a connected ecosystem, and a commitment and willingness to do accessibility right. I very much miss my android though, and Apple adding a dvorak keyboard layout would go a long way to getting me feeling more comfortable with all that I am missing. I tried to be objective, giving my assessments of both platforms. I do not pretend to know all things, so if I am missing something or if I did not get something right, please let me know. Thanks. Best mail client, particulary for threading
Hello, I m writing to ask about an accessible mail client for the iPhone. I am especially inerested in what works best for threading. The mail client that comes with the iPhone makes it too easy to miss messages, because when I read a threaded conversation, I often end up trying to read the messages in order, however pressing next does not aways begin reading the next message, and exploring on screen sometimes puts me in another message rather than the one I intended to read. I tried Outlook, however messages are placed most recent first, and it becomes more difficult to read a thread in order in which messages are sent. It also did not seem to have a way of jumping quickly to the next message in a thread, so a message with signatures could take too much time to read. I could not find a way to re-sort messages. Finally, I tried Inbox, which was my client of choice on Android. It is my favorite by far, because messages are sorted the way I like them to be, signatures do not appear unless expanded, reading the first few lines of a message actually works, etc etc but threading experiences the same issue as with the apple mail client where messages are not easily read, and sometimes skipped because there does not seem to be a reliable way of jumping to the content of the next message in a thread. Are other users experiencing these behaviors? I do enjoy using threading, and I hope that a better email client exists. If I am missing a setting that can help, please let me know. Please excuse any errors, I am typing this using the braille input on a bus.@Sent from my iPhone -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Re: GPS Apps
Hello, When I am traveling, I do not wish to pull my phone out of my pocket to ask Siri about my location when, at minimum, the app ought to give me intersection announcements and POI's as advertised, and I have found that this is very spotty. I should say that the places where this was tested get excellent GPS reception, and the device used is an iPhone 7ing Also, the unlabeled item is in the location tab... It states "submenu button" which, in my mind, needs a description about what is contained in that menu... and the map is completely useless for a voiceover user. Thanks. Re: GPS Apps
Hello, How are you able to get it to reliably announce, say, intersections? How well does it do at providing timely directions when walking or in a vehicle? My concern is mostly usability, not as much who funds it, also I would disagree with the statement the Seeing Eye is "wealthy?. Thanks. Re: GPS Apps
Hello, I tried out Seeing Eye GPS today, and experienced some issues that make me not want to purchase this app. Here is what I noticed, and if there are work-arounds, please let me know: - Lack of Customization: This app seems to not allow me to choose what I want announced when... it allows me to view information, but the interface is busy and unnecessarily clunky in my opinion. - The announcements don't happen when the device is in my pocket as the app says they should... I do have background setting turned on. Even when the device is unlocked, on a bus the app missed every other street or more at times. And when walking around, results were not much better. I did like intersection descriptions though... - The frequency of updates was every 15 seconds. My phone got warm, and I often did not hear information... this is similar to the above, but 15 seconds can be a long time to walk if you are a fast walker before you receive accurate information. - Lack of information: I don't see where I can get lat/long. - Inaccessible map: This app is for the blind, and has Seeing Eye's name on it. It is a complete and utter shame that the devs of this app did not see fit to make the maps accessible, or at the very least to provide an alternative to the inaccessible maps. - Terrible button descriptions: One of them just says menu... While I can explore and press things until I figure out what they do, who is this app for? Was it designed for the techy that doesn't care about button descriptions and labels? - Finally, the price... The map data this app uses, so far as I can tell, is free. There may be an up-front cost to provide this to the user, I am not sure... but I believe there is not. What is the user being charged for exactly? If it is for app improvements, then I am really appalled that, in all the time this app has been on the appstore, this is the best the devs can do. I am critical of this app, but I am hoping someone can set me straight or tell me what I am missing here. I am glad they offer a free trial, otherwise I would be requesting a refund. I cannot recommend anybody serious about independent navigation use this app. Intersection descriptions are about the best thing this app does right. While that is useful, I am not sure that that is worth paying a recurring subscription or $299. GPS Apps
Hello, On Android, I used Nearby Explorer. I contacted the dev to see if they would offer some sort of a discount as I already purchased their app once, however was told I would need to pay for the app. On Android, I found it quite good as I could choose what I wanted to be announced, and I could choose whether to use onboard or online maps. It had features that no other app used. I am considering purchasing the app on iOS, however I am interested in others' experiences with navigation apps. I am looking for an app which will announce intersections accurately as I approach them, as well as points of interest. It would be good if it offered turn-by-turn navigation, although I would mostly use Google Maps for that. Getting heading is good. Rarely, lat/long is good as well, as I do enjoy getting out to geocache from time to time. So, any thoughts? It's fine if it is more than one app... Will BlindSquare meet my needs? Should I consider the Seeing Eye GPS? Any other apps that I should have on my list? Thanks all. -- Cordially, Nimer Jaber My mission is to bring love and peace to everyone around me with all tools available to me. OCR Apps
Hello, I am looking for someone that has used different OCR apps to reflect on their experiences. I purchased the KNFB app for Android, and am hesitating to purchase it again on iOS as it is costly, and on Android, the app would break after every update. However, if it is believed that the results are superior from any other app, I will consider it... Which OCR apps have you used, did you find them to work, and which one would you recommend? Password Manager
Hello, I am looking for a good password manager that works cross-platform, preferably one with some sort of an online option... This takes away a small amount of security, however is more convenient. I do not wish to sync databases with Google Drive. Also, it should be accessible on multiple platforms such as Windows, Android, Mac OS, and iOS. It should also have 2fa as an option. I have been using Lastpass, however it has seen some accessibility regressions in Firefox recently. Any thoughts? Even if you aren't sure if one would meet my needs, what do you use as a password manager, or are you reliant on iOS keychain? Re: Dvorak keyboard layout
I think the other annoyance of using a 3rd-party keyboard is that you then lose things like dictation, and Braille Screen Input unless you switch back to the iOS keyboard... at least that is how it seems to work for me. Is everyone on list using the default iOS input methods? If not, what other input methods have you tried and had success with? Thanks. Re: Dvorak keyboard layout
Hello, I will contact the dev. I had tried it, but ran into letters/words not speaking, sometimes letters not being typed, letters not being echoed as I backspaced, etc... but I will give it another go, and will reach out to the dev to see if they are willing to make some improvements. Thanks for the suggestion. On Fri, May 12, 2017 at 7:07 AM Richard Turner wrote: > Have you tried the one in the app store called Dvorak for all?
