"Where to Go" dog relief area app issue

2016-05-10 Thread R VanLant
Hi,

Is anyone here using the "Where to Go" app that tells you dog relief areas
in airports? I downloaded it yesterday for the first time. Whenever I
click on an airport name to show the relief area for that airport, the app
hangs for a second then takes me to my phone's home screen. The app is
still in the app switcher, but it did not load the airport information. Is
this just me? I thought I read about this in a book a couple years ago,
but this is my first time trying it.

RE: bluetooth earpieces - do they have remote control?

2016-04-19 Thread R VanLant
For those of you recommending Bluetooth ear pieces, so they typically have the
remote control function I’ve grown accustomed to on the Apple ear buds? I
really do rely on the start top and volume functions on the ear bud cord.

No, I can’t alleviate your fear since I lost my $95 Voyager Edge about two
weeks ago and have looked everywhere. I even wore the ear hook with it but it
has not shown up. I did stick it in my pocket when I was out when I did not
want to use it and it is gone. $95 is a lot of money to lose and pay again. So
I am back to the Apple ear pods for now.

I have been sticking to the apple earbuds that come with our phones for the
last 3 years. Generally speaking, I like how they fit in my ears, the remote
control feature, that they don’t have to be charged, and, and this may sound
funny, I like that they are either attached to my phone or the cord is long
enough that I don’t really lose them. However, I am forever untying knots in
them as they get twisted in my purse or in my pockets. One coworker suggested
getting a pair of headphone that has a cord wrapped in a heavier material that
doesn’t knot as easily. I’ve had some of these earphones in the past and they
still do get twisted up. That means that the next logical step, unless I’m
missing a good option out there, is to go with Bluetooth earphones of some
sort. But my fear as a blind person is that I will lose them since I imagine
them to be small. I do not want to be wearing them every hour I’m awake. I
have visions of the thing falling off my head or off my desk or into the bottom
of my purse. Can some of you alleviate my concerns and tell me what the
experience is really like or what other options you’ve chosen to get rid of the
forever tangling Apple earbuds? Secondarily, is it expected that you need to
charge them each night?

Sounds like you enable the speak screen feature. There should be a way to turn
it off in settings. I think it's under settings/speech. I remember accidentally
enabling that at some point, too. I believe it was Jonathan Mosen, but someone
did a podcast on this feature. It was really awesome!

No, you can’t adjust that and I don’t find it any different on my 6S Plus. I
also don’t recall anybody posting anything about this in a long time.

Do you use a case? There is always a slight chance that a case could trigger
the proximity sensor, also make sure you clean your screen from time to time.

I do not think it is my imagination that my iPhone 6s, which I got a couple
month ago, has a much higher sensitivity for going to speaker phone if I even
slightly move the phone from my ear or the lower part of the phone from my
cheek. It’s rather annoying and was giving me problems hearing a call tonight
because I was trying to move the phone away from my mouth a bit to tell my kids
to bbe quiet and then the phone would go over to speaker. I was on an iphone
4 before this. Does anyone else notice this? Is there a way to change this
sensitivity? I suppose I’m normally using ear buds on calls, but I broke mine
this morning.

Hi,

Simply Yoga has a free version and a cheap one, and its yoga workouts are
described clearly. Pocket Yoga is fully accessible and not very expensive. You
might need someone to describe a few things, but it's pretty good. It also
includes a pose dictionary, so you can get detailed descriptions of poses
you're not sure about.

Best,

Anna

Hello there! You may want to take a look at the BlindAlive.com website. They
have Pilates Level 1 and Level 2 workouts. The woman who started this
movement, is blind, so all exercises or fully accessable. You can buy workouts
via download and/or physical CDs. Exercises or explain in full detail right on
the website. You can listen to the exercises, and practice them before your
workout arrives. I was so excited, I ordered every physical CD, which is
cheaper than getting a gym membership and or signing up with one of the local
groups around here for exercise. I encourage any blind person who is looking
to get healthy or stay fit, to check out that website. Hope this helps.

best way to check Verizon data usage

2016-03-10 Thread R VanLant
For the first time in the 3 years I've had an iPhone, I got a text from
Verizon saying I'd used 75% of my data for this period. So glad to know
I'll get such a warning. Now that I'm obviously starting to use my phone
more, what is the easiest way to monitor data usage for the current payment
cycle? If my husband gets a phone too and we are on the same shared data
plan, does your recommended method change?

Subject: RE: audio at a live hockey game

Hi.

You might be able to find an app to get the hockey game, but the audio will
probably lag behind the live action. This is due to the internet relaying the
audio from the arena to a server somewhere on Earth, and then it’s relayed
through other servers back to you. I don’t fully understand why this is the
case, since VOIP programs like Skype give almost instant communications between
computers over great distances.

Wish I had better news. If it were me I’d invest a few dollars on an
inexpensive radio to get the game. Oh yeah, speaking of getting the game over
the air, some stations delay the over the air broadcast for at least seven
seconds, and maybe even more. I think they do this so if the mics that pick up
the action in the arena catch one of those words that you don’t use on the
radio, the station can hit a button to cut the offending word from going over
the air. I experienced this at a Kentucky Basketball game. I had a radio with
me to hear the game. The crowd would get excited about something that
happened, and about fifteen seconds later I’d hear what happened to get them so
excited. Some venues have a transmitter that is designed to cover only the
inside of the arena, and you tune to that frequency to hear the game.

Whatever you do, good luck. You might want to contact either the Avalanche
team, the arena where they play, or the radio station that broadcasts the game
and see what’s available. Who knows. There may indeed be an app that will do
exactly what you desire. I’m just telling you what I’ve experienced.

Have a blessed day, and don’t work too hard.

RE: Excess ability and usability of sign-up genius

2016-02-25 Thread R VanLant
Mary,
My church and my kids preschool use it. The website is OK, but I recently
tried doing it in Safari with VoiceOver and I think I found it easier than on
Internet Explorer and pretty straightforward. I need to sign up again in the
next couple days, so I'll try to take special note of anything that is odd.
Typically, you get an invitation link from someone and it takes you to the
sign up page. There is a little greeting at the top then the needs are laid
out in a table. For example, iff the sign up is for childcare workers, the
first column may be the date, then the age group, then a place for you to mark
a checkbox if you want to sign up. It will show names next to the items for
which someone has signed up already Once you mark off the things you wish to
vounter for, you click a Sign Up button at the bottom and then it will ask if
you give you an option to log in or register. As you coiffirm your signup,
you can add a comment if you want. Signup Genius will send you a reminder a
day or so before your event s a reminder.

I just learned that, as part of our new website, my church is going to use
something called sign-up genius when people are being asked to sign up for
things such as helping out with programs at Cetera. I gather it is fairly
widely used, but I have never run across it. Does anyone have experience with
it using a Mac or an eye device? How accessible is it or not? And how usable is
it or not? One of the things that gives me pause about this tool is that it is
supposedly real time. So if you are on the page and somebody else's signing up
for something on the page from a different computer or device, you can
instantly see that they have signed up. That sounds like a heap of trouble,
but, hope springs eternal. Any experience?
Mary

audio at a live hockey game

2016-02-24 Thread R VanLant
Occasionally I go to Colorado Avalanche hockey games at the big stadium in
Denver. A blind friend told me that he listens to the game via a live
broadcast on a small AM radio when he goes to the game. Rather than buying
a little radio, is there an app I can use on my phone to tune into that AM
signal or would I possibly need to see if the AM station puts a feed on a
website?I do not otherwise listen to the radio, so this is probably the
only thing I'd be trying to listen to.

low vision users - what video magnifier apps do you like?

2016-02-17 Thread R VanLant
I have a handheld video magnifier from HIMS Inc. I especially appreciate
being able to reverse the contrast to light text on a dark background. I
had tried a couple magnifier apps on my old iphone 4 with limited
satisfaction. I see an app in the app store called Visor and I think I
heard it referenced on a podcast, but I do not recall the reviews. Any
strong recommendations here of an app that is pretty comparable to a hand
held video magnifier?

RE: Accessible children's books on iPhon/iPad

2016-02-08 Thread R VanLant
I had a couple that were not really accessible, but once my sighted husband
showed my then 4 year old where to click, she could do it on her own on my
phone. I think I just did some search in the app store for kids book audible
or such. We had Sleeping Beauty and the Princess and the Pea.

Glad to hear ibooks has some; maybe I'll try that.

You might also find out if your local library offers Tumblebooks. It's up the
each library whether they make these available to patrons via their website or
just within the library. I'm hoping I can access my library's account with
Tumblebook from my phone. These are books with audio. Never tried them, but
it's worth mentioning while we are on the topic.

Are there any accessible apps for children's books? I would like it to read
the books out loud. I could put in my headphones and read along in my voice
while they look at the pages.

If the app is only available on iPad please note that. I would be willing to
get an old iPad to use for reading if there are usable apps.

two gesture questions

2016-02-08 Thread R VanLant
Is there a gesture to get quickly to the top or bottom of a long list?
Specifically, I'm hoping for a faster way to skip down a long list of
podcast episodes, email, or options in settings, and probably other things
escaping my thoughts.

Also, I was listening to a podcast on using a Bluetooth keyboard with
VoiceOver. A keyboard way to do a "find" on the screen was mentioned. Is
there a way to trigger that Find dialog option with a gesture?

I use Audible less now than I did, but there are some books that have a great
human reader that are not available through BARD or the CD package costs too
much and is Audible usually has the best price on audio books. Plus, their
books, listened to with their app, have the best book navigation options of
other audio books.

Though, as you may have noticed with BARD, they are getting more commercially
recorded books in their system. So, I always check BARD first before deciding
to buy an Audible book.

At this point, I probably read more books from Bookshare using Voice Dream
Reader than any other method.

Some books just are better with a human reader in my opinion.

Ultimately, it boils down to personal preference if you want human read books
and how much you are willing to pay for them.

Enjoy,

Richard

I'm in the same boat here. Siri will dial my kids pediatrician's office, but

obvious Siri is looking on the web to find relevant numbers. I had the same
bad experience on my old iphone 4 before I had Siri and just used the build in

Sorry, but I have already tried calling contacts that just have the name in the
company field by including the label, and Siri still says that there is no
phone number for that contact.
I can not say why Siri will call some of the contacts, and not call others, but
including or not including the label makes no difference.

In my own personal case, Siri will call all of my companies except for 2 or 3.
I can not find any difference in my company contacts, I use the same label for
all. I do think this is a problem that Apple needs to look into.

Can anyone suggest an accessible app for getting local news? I've tried

way to do this in the news app already on the phone, but not sure about that.
Any suggestions are welcome.

RE: Voice Dream Reader and browsing/downloading books?

2015-12-29 Thread R VanLant
Two additional questions on Voice Dream...
1) I'm curious of the advantages of using the built in speech option within
Voice Dream as opposed to using the two finger swipe down and letting my normal
IOS voice do the job. Other than being able to pick a different voice you may
like better, what are the advantages that I'm not seeing yet to using the built
in reader function?

2) Also, Bookshare used to offer a way to skim for New York Times best sellers
on their site. Can you find that same search option somehow within Voice
Dream? I didn't see if the other day when I was setting up my new Voice Dream.

Yes, you can add books from book share. From the home screen or from the folder
to which you want to add your book share books, you should find an add button
down in the lower left corner of your screen. Double tap that. Then double tap
on book share which is also down in the lower left. You will then see a number
of choices, starting at the top with the search, which lets you type in a
search for a title or an author and then double tap the search button. You can
also select category and then pick the category want, or latest, which gives
you a long list of the latest books added to book share. You scroll through and
Double tap the download button you find next to the title you want to
download. Or, if you see a title you'd like more information on before
downloading, double tap the title, and on the next screen, you will find a
synopsis. If you decide you want the book, there is a download button near the
top of that screen. If you don't want to, go back and resume you're scrolling
or search. Deleting books is easy. When you have books either in a folder that
you're looking at or just on the main screen if you didn't make any folders and
have books there, you can find the title you would like to delete, then just
flick up with the rotor said to action, and you will be presented with the
choice to delete like what happens in mail. Double tap and you're done. The
book is gone. I can't answer your language question, as I have only read
English books in this app.

The following information is important for all

emails linking directly to apps

2015-12-24 Thread R VanLant
It used to be that when I clicked on a link in an email from Facebook or
LinkedIn that it would open in the app, not in Safari. On my new phone, I
cannot get this to happen. When I click on a message in Facebook for
example, I ever so briefly see that a message from the phone tries to pop
up to ask if I want to open the link in Facebook, but before I can click on
it, Safari opens. Anyone know how to make this adjustment? I'd rather work
in the apps than on the website in Safari.

hanging up calls on new 6s with 9.2

I am having a really hard time getting my new 6s phone to hang up. I've
typically been taking or making calls without an ear piece in so I've tried
pressing the power button and two finger double tapping. I've had to resort
to pulling the phone away from my ear and finding the end call button.
Please tell me there is a better way.

new to Siri

2015-12-15 Thread R VanLant
Since I just upgraded from an old iPhone 4, I am loving the little I have
found I can do with Siri to dictate text messages and to use the dictate
function on other emails and entry fields. To what extent can I ask Siri
to do things with other non-native apps such as Facebook messenger? What
are your favorite uses for Siri that are good for me to know? Is there a
general Siri how to overview out thre? Finally, Siri seems to understand me
quite well, but is there a way to train her to my voice? I cannot find an
option like that in settings.

Thanks.
