I did not know what SSI was until this week. I got Social Security Disability
Income for a few years, got it, and now my regular Social Security on the 3rd
of each month. My birthday falls in the second week of the month, since it is
on the 11th day of the month. Some people with Social Security get theirs on
the Wednesday of the week of their birthday - friend on 17th gets 3rd
Wednesday; husband on 24th and cousin on 23rd get theirs 4th Wednesday, but
mine comes on the 3rd.

Someone wondered about the alphabet, since my name starts with A, but my 17th
friend's name starts with B. Go figure.

Do you get the money on the first of the month? If so that is SSI and SSDI

frustrated with Samsung TV built in voice guidance

2020-04-07 Thread Terri Hedgpeth
Hello all,

Is there an app for controlling a Samsung Smart TV for the iPhone? There are
more things wrong about the built-in Samsung guidance. It's to loud, to
chatty, and either to fast or way to slow. I want to use my iPhone as a
remote.

Hope someone can help.

Best,

Terri Hedgpeth

number of the message and do a one-finger double tap. It should abbm you if you

Richard,

Most of the Microsoft apps in the IOs app store are office 365 products,

Yes word excel & powerpoint are the basic package although individual apps for
phone and iPad.

But there are a number of others including outlook, sway, and a truckload of
others.so it depends on what app it was that had the redownload beside it.

Here is the description from the app store. It combines all of them into this
one app.

The Office app combines the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps you know and rely
on with new capabilities that harness the unique strengths of a phone to create
a simpler, yet more powerful Office experience on the go. Whether using it for
personal or professional reasons, the Office app is designed to be your go-to
app for getting work done on a mobile device. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
combined in one app: • The most widely used tools for working with documents,
spreadsheets, and presentations, all from a single app. • Create, edit, and
work together on Office documents with others in real-time. • Use templates to
easily get started with your resume, budget, presentations, and other
documents. • Easily store, access and search for Word, Excel, PowerPoint files
stored in your personal cloud storage, on your device, or across your
organization (if using a work account). Uniquely mobile ways that make document
creation easier: • Snap a picture of a document and turn it into an editable
Word file with the press of a button. • Transform a picture of a table into an
Excel spreadsheet so you can work with the data. • Let PowerPoint help you
design a presentation by simply selecting the pictures you want to use from
your phone. • Create automatically enhanced digital images of whiteboards and
documents with Office Lens features integrated into the app. Quickly perform
common mobile tasks with built-in Actions: • Instantly create PDFs from photos
or Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. • Easily transfer files between your
phone and computer. • Sign PDFs using your finger. • Quickly jot down ideas
and notes with Sticky Notes. • Scan QR codes to open links. Anyone can download
the Office app for free and start using it right away. Access and save
documents to the cloud by connecting with a Microsoft Account (for OneDrive or
SharePoint) or by connecting to a third-party cloud storage provider. Logging
in with a personal, work, or school Microsoft Account connected to an Office
365 subscription will unlock premium features within the app. Subscription &
Privacy Disclaimer Unlock the full Microsoft Office experience with a
qualifying Office 365 subscription for your phone, tablet, PC and Mac. Monthly
Office 365 subscriptions purchased from the app will be charged to your App
Store account and will automatically renew within 24 hours prior to the end of
the current subscription period unless auto-renewal is disabled beforehand. You
can manage your subscriptions in your App Store account settings. This app is

Hi, I purchased Waltr2 on Jonathan Mosen’s recommendation on a recent podcast.
I couldn’t get the trial version to work, so I decided to take a risk and
upgrade to the full version. The software still does not work with JAWS. I’m on
the latest build of Windows 10, and for whatever reason when I tab around the
screen, the only thing I can activate is the main sub menu with items like
About, Check for Updates, Support, etc. What are other people doing to make
this thing work? On the podcast, Jonathan was tabbing about just fine through
the various controls. I’m highly interested in replacing iTunes as a file
transfer source, so any suggestions on how to crack this accessibility issue
would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance!--Joe

a Zoom meeting question

2020-02-12 Thread Terri Hedgpeth
Hello all,

Hello all,

When I use head phones (corded or Bluetooth) with JAWS in a Zoom meeting,
JAWS stops speaking altogether or goes silent. My work machine is a Dell
Latitude 13" touch screen and keyboard. It is a relevantly new laptop,
almost two years old. Any ideas on why this is happening?

Second, has anyone tried VO in a Zoom Meeting? Does that work well?

Best,

Terri Hedgpeth

Into the ear like earpods from apple,

Not into the ear canal

If you got hearing aids with Bluetooth you could just connect your aids to the
phone and cut out the need for earpods / headphones.

BackBeat FIT 3200 Bluetooth Earbuds from Amazon. These came out around
September 2019 and already rate 4.4 out of 5 stars with 65 reviews. I think
these are the best solution for me because one I where hearing aids. second, I
do not care for ear buds that are pressed into the ear canal. The Plantronics
have a unique ear piece that just fits into your ear without protruding into
the ear canal. These also rate high for sound and phone calls.

Just thought I would share my findings. FYI, when I first ordered them last
week the expected delivery was one to two months. I was willing to wait if they
fill the bill for me. However, I have received an update from Amazon and
expected delivery is between tomorrow and Febrary 9th.

RE: iPad Mini built-in apps do not open

2020-01-30 Thread Terri Hedgpeth
Hello Fanus,
You might try the following:
Do another reset on the new iPad,
Next, for setting it up, try to initiate set up using your other iDevice
(iPhone or iPad),
First initiate setup on the new device, and you should be prompted to choose
how you want to do the set up. Also you may be asked if you want to use another
iDevice to set up this iPad.
Bring the two devices together and follow the prompts. This does a direct
transfer without using the cloud. I recently set up my new phone from the cloud
and lost a few of my apps including the money identifier app.
Best,
Terri

Until more bugs get fixed, I'll not be upgrading to IOS 13.3. Maybe I'll

RE: smart thermostats and their apps with voiceover?

2020-01-02 Thread Terri Hedgpeth
Hello Robin,

I have the Nest thermostats in my home and love them. The app is pretty
accessible and they provide tech support. I had the Echo Bee thermostats for
about five months and at that time (2017) the mobile app was not accessible. I
tried to work with them over several phone calls with long wait times 25-45
minutes, and they had no knowledge of accessibility for people who are blind.
Though it was well passed my money back return period, after a long phone
discussion on the topic of returning the Echo Bee due to lack of accessibility,
they did refund my money upon the return of the two thermostats.

Before I tried the Nest thrmostats, I called their tech support and was
pleasantly surprised that the tech person whipped out his iPhone and turned on
VoiceOver and walked me through the app. That was so cool and such a contrast
to my experience with Echo Bee. So I bought the two Nest thermostats for our
two AC units and have been very happy. Oh, I have not needed to call Nest tech
support after that first demo. I had an HVAC professional do the installation
of both the Echo Bee and the Nest. So, I did lose the cost of the first install
for the Echo Bees.

I have heard since that the Echo Bee thermostat app is accessible now. Don’t
know though.

Best,

Terri Hedgpeth

Hi,

Sorry for the vague subject line there. But I was just curious what if any
smart thermostats people are making use of either in conjunction with Amazon
Echo's and smart home apps that might be accessible with voiceOver. All
thoughts appreciated as I begin considering purchasing such a device.

Take good care.

are so paranoid about updating?

Hi Terri,

When you are doing a workout, you're usually on page 2 of the Workout app.
Flick right with two fingers or use the page indicator at the bottom of the
screen to go to page 1. There's an End button on that screen, as well as a
Pause one and one to start a different kind of workout in case you change types
in the middle.

Anna

Subject: Instant Pot

  Hello,

I know that this subject has been discussed on this list before but with
Christmas just a couple of weeks away I would like to purchase an Instant Pot
for the house but there are so many models I do not know which one to get. I
would like to have one that will work with the Instant Pot app so that my wife
and I who are both blind could set the cooking mode from our iPhones. Does
anyone know which Instant Pot will work with the app?

Thank You,

Scott

hi, everyone, for some reason on my iPhone 7 Plus, the volume is very low now.
Yet, when I play media such as music, it is at its normal volume. When I’m
going into all my apps from the home screen, that’s when it gets quite soft. I
don’t know if anyone else is having problems.

Hi,

possibly I am missing something.

When I go to Voice Over I can only find Speech channels . and my name 1 & 2. I
do not see sound channels at all.

Max.

Hello all,

Just heard a tip from Jonathan Mosen podcast on how to fix the hearing aid
issue so all sounds go through your hearing aids.

Go to voiceover,

Select Audio,

Swipe down to “Speech Channels (your name)”,

Right below this you should find:

Terri1 of course it would be your name.

Terri2 just below that,

Below those next you will find:

Sound Channels Terri

Terri1

Terri2

Unselect or Turn the “Terri1 off for both the “Speech” and the “Sound”

Then while that screen is still ope, double tap to select both again.

Repeat this process with Terri2 for both Speech and Sound, turning them first
off and then back on..

Amazeingly the fix is this simple.

Best,

Terri Hedgpeth

Hi,
I wonder if that would work for the bluetooth speaker issue (see thread about

Yes, Anna, you are correct. If one does not have their hearing aids on and/or
connected via Bluetooth, you will not see the speechand sounds headers.

HI Carolyn,

Speech and Sound Channels options are only available and visible when you have
an audio device connected to your iPHone, such as headphones. I would think
having hearing aids connected would also make them available, but I don't know
for sure.

Best,
Anna

a fix for the hearing aid issue that works

2019-11-22 Thread Terri Hedgpeth
Hello all,

Just heard a tip from Jonathan Mosen podcast on how to fix the hearing aid
issue so all sounds go through your hearing aids.

Go to voiceover,

Select Audio,

Swipe down to "Speech Channels (your name)",

Right below this you should find:

Terri1 of course it would be your name.

Terri2 just below that,

Below those next you will find:

Sound Channels Terri

Terri1

Terri2

Unselect or Turn the "Terri1 off for both the "Speech" and the "Sound"

Then while that screen is still ope, double tap to select both again.

Repeat this process with Terri2 for both Speech and Sound, turning them
first off and then back on..

Amazeingly the fix is this simple.

Best,

Terri Hedgpeth

Hi Terri,

Do you sometimes use your phone with a braille display or Bluetooth keyboard?
If so, connect it, open Messages, and double-tap to start writing. Press Eject
on a Bluetooth keyboard or Space with dots 146 (think sh for show) to make the
onscreen keyboard appear. Now turn off your phone and keyboard or display. When
you go back into an edit box, the keyboard should be there.

Best,

Anna

Seeghard's tip on how to delete a book in Audible

Here are the steps to delete books:

1. Locate the Refresh button by touching the right side of the screen near the
top or flick to it, I can usually touch it almost instantly.
2. Flick left once from the refresh button to "Delete" and double tap 3. Either
touch your library area and drag your finger up or down to the book you want to
delete or just flick right a few times after you double tap the master delete
button 4. Once you find the book you want to delete, flick left once to its
delete button, double tap it, wait a second and double tap again as the
confirmation button will be exactly in the same place.
5. You are done.

If the rotor deletion method worked, you would simply avoid the first couple of
steps of finding and double tapping the master delete button.
After that it's about the same amount of flicks and taps, find your book,
instead of flicking left to delete you would flick up or down to switch the
rotor to delete, then you would double tap and depending on how Audible would
implement this, you may not have to double tap a second time to confirm with
the rotor method, but maybe you would have to. I still agree that it would be
nice to do it via the rotor, but I wouldn't go as far as calling the current
method a pain.

Regards,
Sieghard

I am going to have to agree with Marry deleting books in the app is a pain.
They shouldn't have ever changed the way it use to work. @Josh I would have to
really hate my books to return them. I am hoping to build up a massive library
there. For some reason I am not able to buy extra credits right now. The app on
IOS works fine for the most part, I hate the app on win 10 though.

Yes, sorry , wrong term. Yes you can use your credits to purchase new books
from Audible right in the IOS Audible app. There five tabs at the bottom of the
screen when you open the Audible app. They are: Home, My library, Player,
Originals, and Discover.
If you explore books or other offerings in Home, Originals, or Discover, you
can double tap on any of the books shown in those tabs to expand that option.
You will see under Summary and Sample, the option to add to "My Library" if you
have credits available. Double tap the "Add" option and in your Library it
goes. You will receive a prompt "Add to your Library for one credit?" So double
tap that and that's all you need to do. You will find the the new book in your
library.

I love the new feature that allows you to purchase books in Audible with your
points, right from the IOS app. It took a few years for Audible to negotiate
this option with Apple.

Audible has now discontinued the return feature. The last time I checked they
changed it to an exchange rather than a return.
So if you have any books in the library, they are all available in the App.
And, like siegard, I love the Audible app and use it all the time. I have been

I do have an audible account, I just prefer not to use the app to listen to my
audible books. My audible books don't usually stay on my library because I
often return my books although purchasing 3 credits for a little over $28 is
pretty neat. If all the audible books I own were actually on my audible
library, then maybe I'd really like the app a bit more.

My email to Apple: FW: IOS 13.01, 02, 03, 13.2 hearing aid issue

2019-11-07 Thread Terri Hedgpeth

From: Terri Hedgpeth
Sent: Thursday, November 7, 2019 11:09 AM
To: accessibil...@apple.com
Cc: Terri Hedgpeth
Subject: IOS 13.01, 02, 03, 13.2 hearing aid issue

Hello Apple,

I wear Oticon hearing aids and up to IOS v12.4.1, my hearing aids connected
with my iPhone without a problem routing all sounds through my hearing aids
just like any other Bluetooth ear pieces.

Since IOS V13. most sounds are routing through my hearing aids including
Voice Over VO, phone calls, audio books, music, but not the screen clicks
beeps and other audio accessibility cues or what refer to as "earCons."
These earcons are very helpful in providing navigation and icon status
information to those of us who are blind and who rely on VO to access our
phones. I have an iPhone Xr.

I went to my Audiologist yesterday and explained to her what was going on
with the IOS update and she got the tech staff from Oticon on the phone and
I explained to them the issue I was having with V13.2. They put us on hold
for a few minutes to check with the Bluetooth team. When they came back on
the line, they shared with us that this is an issue that only Apple can
resolve. They explained that Apple decides what can be played through the
hearing aids. Now typically I would be quite skeptical of such an answer
thinking they were just passing the buck. However, I believe them because I
have heard from numerous people who are blind that wear hearing aids from
many different manufactures having the exact same experience as I described.
Thus, the ball is in your court to address this huge issue. I can no longer
do anything on my iPhone without others around knowing that I am accessing
my phone. Yes, I could turn those sounds off, however, I need those earcons
to help me do what I do on my phone efficiently. Please feel free to contact
me if you have any questions.

Best,

Terri Hedgpeth, Ed.D.

V13.2 and issue with hearing aids

2019-11-06 Thread Terri Hedgpeth
Hello all,

I went to my Audiologist today and we phoned the Audicon tech support person
that works with the providers and they have heard of the issue of VO still
playing through the hearing aids but not the screen clicks and beeps. The
Bluetooth team says that the issue is with Apple choosing what to allow to
be pushed through to the hearing aids. So, please all of you with hearing
aids, please complain to Apple about this issue. I believe the tech folks at
Audicon because others on this list are having the same issue with various
different brands of Has.

Best,

Terri Hedgpeth, Ed.D.

Bluetooth and my Bose Frames

2019-11-04 Thread Terri Hedgpeth
Hello all,

FYI, my Bose Frames work perfectly channeling both Voiceover and all the
clicks and whilrly sounds through the ear pieces. At leased I have a
solution for the clicks and sounds that don't play through my hearing aids
since 13.2 update.

Here is what happens in text messaging when I try to reply to someone.

I open a message >

double tap on the message area near the bottom of the screen >

this is when the virtual key-board typically pops up;

However, since upgrading to 13.2, sometimes the key-board will not come up.
Instead it shows a bunch of options like custom Emoticon's and other things.

Ideas?

Since I upgraded yesterday to 13.2, Voiceover stills plays through my hearing

Thoughts?

RE: Apple Newsroom: Apple reveals new AirPods Pro, available October 30

2019-10-29 Thread Terri Hedgpeth
If that was correct, why than do rechargeable hearing aids last for days on a
charge, and for four days on a small wafer battery?

It will be a long time before battery technology is advanced enough to offer 8
or 10 hours in such a tiny design.

Maybe they could design a hat with solar panels which wirelessly charges your
Airpods while they are in your ear. If you live in a place with little sunshine
that of course wouldn’t do you much good. Oh, wait, they still have to invent
it.

Yeah, it sounded great, but still five hours of battery life… just ruined it.

I'm sharing this because the new Airpods Pro will be available October 30th and
require iOS 13.2 according to the below article so hopefully iOS 13.2 will be
out in the next day or two. I personally won't be spending $249 on a pair of
earphones.

After upgrading to 13.2 ...

2019-10-29 Thread Terri Hedgpeth
Hello all,

Since I upgraded yesterday to 13.2, Voiceover stills plays through my
hearing aids, but all the clicks bumps and beeps do not route through them.
Those sounds are heard by anyone in the room with me, and the sounds are
loud. Thoughts?

Best,

Terri Hedgpeth

The v13 update changed the screen rotation locked and I cannot recall where
that setting is located. Been searching with no luck.

reading group messages

2019-10-25 Thread Terri Hedgpeth
Is there a way to read/listen to a group message without listening to the
string of phone numbers? This is really annoying when there are more than
five people in the group.

Best,

Terri Hedgpeth

Bluetooth app for Instant Pot is not working in v13.1.3

2019-10-22 Thread Terri Hedgpeth
Hello all,

I hope someone can help with my issue.

Has anyone else experienced problems with their Instant Pot Bluetooth app in
the new 13.1.3? Since they quict making the Bluetooth model a couple years
ago, they may not bother updating the app.

Hope someone has a solution.

Best,

Terri Hedgpeth
