Left, right arrows, turns on, then off, quick nav.

This is not my problem. As I wrote, I believe the problem is a setting
on the Iphone, because, on a second Iphone, the magic keyboard works. I
use same keystrokes on both devices, this should rule me out as the
culprit..smile.

Still need to know which setting to change? is it a VO language setting,
is it a matter of removing spare unwanted languages, but why is the
language change being triggered?

RE: Chrome Cast [was "Re: A couple of iPhone questions"]

2017-10-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
All the information is on the Sonos website. It’s basically exactly identical
to a Play 1 but it has the microphones which allow you to speak to it after you
have set up Amazon Alexa. You first have to figure out if Amazon Alexa is
available which I am pretty sure it is not officially and if you can get around
this and use it anyways. I know here in Canada people do use it even though
even here it is not yet officially available. Apparently it might be coming
soon here, but who knows.
At some point during 2018 Sonos will add/enable the Google Assistant as well
and this might be more widely available, it is already here in Canada even
though Google came out way later with it than Amazon did with the Echo/Alexa.
In the US the Sonos 1 costs the same as a Play 1 and I assume it may replace
the Play 1 (if you don’t want voice assistants you just don’t have to set it
up) so that is $199 USD.
Here in Canada it is available now (as of October 24) and it costs $249 here
which is pretty much the exchange rate difference which currently is about
$1.20 CAD for 1 USD, multiply $200 by $1.20 and you get $240 so it’s pretty
close.

Certainly true, but it depends on what you want to accomplish, whether you have
2 or 3 stereos kicking around (I guess you could buy a bunch of powered
computer speakers), how much convenience you want and ultimately what your
budget allows.
If you have two systems you really like then the Chromecast method is worth

If you want to upgrade to something more modern, something which is expandable
and now with the Sonos 1 speaker something which gives you access to several
voice assistants (when they are done with what they are doing) then Sonos is
still the system of choice in my opinion. With Sonos you also don’t use your
phone’s resources, you simply use the phone and Sonos app as a remote control.
You get access to just about every music service there is including Apple Music
and the sound quality is awesome.
The new Sonos 1 speaker is available now and fully supports Alexa, the Google

the voice assistants will not work here because they require a speaker with
microphones and this is simply a hardware constraint. I also assume that the
Sonos 1 is just the start and that a Sonos 3 and Sonos 5 or whatever they will

when it comes out, but I’m glad I was reluctant to jump onto the smart speaker
train because I’d kick myself if I had bought a Amazon Echo and/or Google Home
speaker where now I can buy a Sonos 1 which can do them all.
The Sonos 1 by the way also supports Airplay 2 so even if you already have a

Fanus, as for why they make an audio and a video version it is simple. The
audio only Chromecast plugs into a 3.5mm port so you can connect it to any
powered speaker which has a 3.5mm input port and you can easily connect it to
an older analogue stereo with a 3.5mm to RCA cable. The video version, either
the regular Chromecast or the Chromecast Ultra which supports 4K streaming only
have HDMI ports so unless you have a newer receiver with HDMI inputs this one
wouldn’t work for just music/audio on a system where HDMI is not available.

Exactly so, Sieghard.. In my case, I have some excellent equipment, although it
is certainly not new, including two really good pair of floorstanding speakers
which offer me outstanding sound with the power amps that I still have. I have
not heard Sonos speakers. But I have yet to hear any smaller speaker that comes
close to the output and Fidelity I can get from my floorstanding speakers and
associated equipment. Maybe if we move in a few years to a smaller place, where
space is a much bigger deal than it is for us right now, I will revisit the
issue. I admit to being intrigued by what the HomePods are going to offer, as
well as what the new Google Home Max speaker might offer. I'm thinking of
adjusting their output to room acoustics, something my old stuff certainly
cannot do. I'm really not all that excited about voice assistant speakers yet.
We do have an echo, we got it when it was first available as part of a beta
thing. It's sound is not good. But it stands in the kitchen and has some uses,
such as hands-free timer setting, getting recipes, the weather forecast and
other things that don't demand good Fidelity. I guess I'm just not into the
assistant thing.

2017-10-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Certainly true, but it depends on what you want to accomplish, whether you have
2 or 3 stereos kicking around (I guess you could buy a bunch of powered
computer speakers), how much convenience you want and ultimately what your
budget allows.
If you have two systems you really like then the Chromecast method is worth
considering and may work perfectly well for you.
Assistant will be added I think in early 2018 and I assume they will also
integrate Cortana since Microsoft certainly is going the third-party route.
SIRI will take longer, but it is my guess that in 2 to 5 years SIRI will also
be available and with the software updates Sonos releases your speakers are
very future proof. A lot of my equipment is now 8 years old and it is still
fully supported with all updates and features, of course the voice assistants
will not work here because they require a speaker with microphones and this is
simply a hardware constraint. I also assume that the Sonos 1 is just the start
and that a Sonos 3 and Sonos 5 or whatever they will be called are following to
give customers the full choice of speaker quality and still include voice
assistants. In some cases I have bought new technology when it comes out, but
I’m glad I was reluctant to jump onto the smart speaker train because I’d kick
myself if I had bought a Amazon Echo and/or Google Home speaker where now I can
buy a Sonos 1 which can do them all.
The Sonos 1 by the way also supports Airplay 2 so even if you already have a
bunch of older equipment adding one of them allows you to Airplay to any of
your Sonos speakers since that is how Sonos works.

Sieghard

Hi Fanus,
The Chromecast audio does require AC power connection. You configure it in the
google Home app. You can have a configuration for each Chromecast- connected
device, such as two stereos. So you can send your audio to one, the other one,
or both, by setting up a home group. Configuring is totally accessible.

3MM or HDMI connection.

I have a ChromeCast Audio which has the 3MM audio jack on it. You'd connect it
to a pair of audio speakers or anything else that takes audio input. It looks
like it costs $35, but I'm pretty sure I got it on sale for $25 last Christmas.

There's the original ChromeCast which has an HDMI connector on it. I don't have
this device, but it looks like it also costs $35.

Finally, there's the ChromeCast Ultra which has an HDMI connector and supports
4K video. I also have one of these hooked to my home theater receiver.

One thing I should have mentioned, is that once you start the streaming to your
ChromeCast device, your iPhone is taken out of the loop and is no longer
needed. This is nice since you're no longer using your smart phone resources.
You can go back into the app your casting though and cancel the casting.

There's an app on Android called Google Home that allows you to control your
ChromeCast devices. It looks like you have the same thing in the App Store at
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/google-home/id680819774?mt=8

When casting from an app, only the audio or video from that app is sent over to
your ChromeCast. Your TTS is not sent over. There is an option in Google Home
to mirror the audio from your smart phone though, and if you use this feature
then all of the audio on your phone is sent over to the ChromeCast including
the TTS.

Basically, you buy a Chrome Cast device which you add to your wifi network and

Hi Mary,

If you have two traditional stereos which are not in any way connected or
working on any wireless how can one Chromecast connected to one stereo provide
the same sound on another stereo? I can see how if you had two Chromecasts and
one was connected to each stereo that maybe you can group them, but it is my
understanding that the Chromecast needs to be physically connected to the
stereo where you are streaming/casting the music.

The video version, either
the regular Chromecast or the Chromecast Ultra which supports 4K streaming only
have HDMI ports so unless you have a newer receiver with HDMI inputs this one
wouldn’t work for just music/audio on a system where HDMI is not available.

connected to an existing stereo and get good sound. Lots of absence support
casting, even on iOS, with the sad exception of Apple Music, of course. I wish
they get their head out of their whatever and just realize that not everybody
has airplay or wants to buy whole new stereo or new speakers to get airplay. I
still have it because I have old airport expresses. But they are really old I
mean really old, and they don't make more. The good thing about casting audio
is that, once you have made the connection, the phone isn't doing the work
anymore. You can still skip songs etc. on the phone, but the phone isn't losing
as much battery as it would otherwise. At least that's been my experience.
Chromecast audio versus air play through the same stereo with the same phone.
And if you happen to have two stereos, you can use one chrome cast to set up a
group and play all of your music through both at the same time, that's giving
you music on two separate floors or throughout the house or whatever. Again,
it's just puts lots of new life into older equipment and makes it totally
unnecessary to spend hundreds and hundreds if you want this kind of set up. .

The Chromecast don't have any memory, they are strictly streaming devices but
as Christopher pointed out, they work differewntly from Airplay, for example,
since once you start streaming via your Chromecast it takes over that stream.
For example, if you have a regular Chromecast or a 4K capable Chromecast Ultra
connected to your TV and you have Netflix on your iPhone, you can pick a movie
or show in the app on your phone, send it to the Chromecast and at that point
the Chromecast which is of course connected to your WiFi streams the content
and you could actually completely turn off your iPhone and the movie would
still continue to play/stream.
You can not save any music or other media to a Chromecast.

Re: Chrome Cast [was "Re: A couple of iPhone questions"]

2017-10-18 Thread Christopher Chaltain
The ChromeCast is a small flat disk that fits in the palm of your hand.
I'm guessing it's a bit larger in diameter but a bit thinner then an
Oreo cookie. It has a micro-USB connection for power, connects to your
wifi and has either a 3MM or HDMI connection.

I have a ChromeCast Audio which has the 3MM audio jack on it. You'd
connect it to a pair of audio speakers or anything else that takes audio
input. It looks like it costs $35, but I'm pretty sure I got it on sale
for $25 last Christmas.

There's the original ChromeCast which has an HDMI connector on it. I
don't have this device, but it looks like it also costs $35.

Finally, there's the ChromeCast Ultra which has an HDMI connector and
supports 4K video. I also have one of these hooked to my home theater
receiver.

One thing I should have mentioned, is that once you start the streaming
to your ChromeCast device, your iPhone is taken out of the loop and is
no longer needed. This is nice since you're no longer using your smart
phone resources. You can go back into the app your casting though and
cancel the casting.

There's an app on Android called Google Home that allows you to control
your ChromeCast devices. It looks like you have the same thing in the
App Store at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/google-home/id680819774?mt=8

When casting from an app, only the audio or video from that app is sent
over to your ChromeCast. Your TTS is not sent over. There is an option
in Google Home to mirror the audio from your smart phone though, and if
you use this feature then all of the audio on your phone is sent over to
the ChromeCast including the TTS.

Basically, you buy a Chrome Cast device which you add to your wifi
network and plug into the audio input of a device, such as to a home
theater system with HDMI or powered external speakers with a 3MM
jack. Now you find an app that supports Chrome Cast and double tap
the cast button and choose your destination. Like I said, I do this
all of the time from my Android smart phone.

2017-10-17 Thread GARY WILLIAMS
In the calendar you can go and set alarms to notify you at a time such as two
hours before the appointment. If you are getting siri to put appointments in
the calendar, you still have to go back in the calendar and set up the alarms
to remind you. Hope that helps.

Hi,
Go into the Calendar settings.
You can set a default alert time.

Also, under the Sounds settings you can select a specific alert tone if the
default tone isn't what you want.

a couple basic iPhone questions

2013-08-21 Thread Van Lant Family

Hi,
I've had my iPhone 4 for about 9 months; getting the hang of it, albeit
slower than I'd expected on some things.

I have a couple basic questions:
1. Seems like I end up turning the volume down so that VoiceOver isn't
blaring when I'm around other people, but then I find I miss hearing my
phone ring. Is this normal behavior that the volume of the ringer and
VoiceOver are tied? What do you do to not have the volume super loud, but
not miss phone ringers. (My phone is often near me or on a desk/counter,
not on me where I would feel the vibrate.)

2. I'm used to standard speech software where you can start a read-to-end
function from wherever you are in an email. So, if I right flick through
some initial lines of text to get past the clutter at the top an of email or
webpage, I would like to start a read to end function from that new point,
gut it seems the the 2 finger flick up always starts me back reading at the
top? Is this correct? Any advice on ways to jump past the initial clutter
or pick up where you left off with a read-to-end?

3. I get the Access World monthly newsletter. I've started reading the
articles on my phone using Safari. Kind of building off the last question,
i try to navigate to the article and seems like I have to wade through a
bunch of stuff at the top of the web page first. And, while I hear a jump
to article link on the page that works on my desktop PC with Window Eyes,
I can't get that link to work and/or be able to start a read-to-end
function. Any advice here from others who read this newsletter -- just as a
specific example to help me learn to navigate more efficiently?

Thank you!
Robin Van Lant

Re: a couple basic iPhone questions

2013-08-21 Thread Lisa belville

Hi.

It sounds like you've got your volume buttons set to change the volume of
the ringer and alerts. You can change this by going into settings, then
sounds, and telling the phone to not use the volume buttons to adjust the
ringer/alert volume. there's an adjustable slider there where you can set
the volume of the ringer. Once you set this level, it will stay the same
once you've set the phone to not change the volume using the volume buttons.
All other volumes like the volume of music/streaming can be adjusted using
the volume buttons.

It's a two finger swipe down to read from where you're currently at to the
end. The two finger swipe up reads from your current point to the top of
the screen.

In this case, you can set the ringer to one hundred percent. That way, you can
be listening to music at a soft leval but when a phone call comes in the volume

It's a two finger swipe down to read from where you're currently at to the
end. The two finger swipe up reads from your current point to the top of
the screen.

Subject: a couple basic iPhone questions

 Hi,
I've had my iPhone 4 for about 9 months; getting the hang of it, albeit
slower than I'd expected on some things.

So, if I right flick through
some initial lines of text to get past the clutter at the top an of email
or webpage, I would like to start a read to end function from that new
point, gut it seems the the 2 finger flick up always starts me back
reading at the top? Is this correct? Any advice on ways to jump past the

initial clutter or pick up where you left off with a read-to-end?

 3. I get the Access World monthly newsletter. I've started reading the
articles on my phone using Safari. Kind of building off the last
question, i try to navigate to the article and seems like I have to wade
through a bunch of stuff at the top of the web page first. And, while I
hear a jump to article link on the page that works on my desktop PC
with Window Eyes, I can't get that link to work and/or be able to start a

read-to-end function. Any advice here from others who read this
newsletter -- just as a specific example to help me learn to navigate more

 efficiently?

 Thank you!
