I think Walmart and Sears have like plans at under 50 bucks a month.
Walmart offers an iPhone with it's 50 dollar a month all you can eat and
Sears has now jumped on the band wagon as well.

Their coverage areas may be limited and not available everywhere. The
phones are plastic phones. I wasn't interested myself and so I don't know
any more about it so if your interested, contact your local Wally-world.

I would disagree with the statement that in even the next 20 years all cell
phones will be smartphones. The percentage of smartphones is growing a lot
in North America, Europe, also in China, India and South America, but
there

are so many people in the world who simply cannot afford even a $100
smartphone if it existed. I have been to the Philippines several times and
there as well as in many other Asian and also African countries tens of
millions and probably hundreds of millions of people have extremely cheap
cell phones for mainly for texting since mostly they can't even afford to
buy the credit for voice. These are $10 to $30 phones, often Nokia or
Samsung knock-offs and in the Philippines, since that is the example I
know,
it costs about 1 Dollar to buy a SIM card with a number. A phone with such
a

SIM can receive calls even if there is no credit on the SIM at all, for
about 20 Philippine Pesos (about 45 to 50 Cents) you can buy what they
call

a load which gives you I think 100 text messages. This allows people
(family and friends) to stay in touch, it allows people to have a phone
number so they can receive a call or text message about maybe a job they
applied for etc. but not for more. A lot of people there earn no more than
6000 Pesos (approx. $150) and have to shelter and feed a family with that.
A

full-time maid/housekeeper is lucky to make half that.
Interestingly enough an iPhone in the Philippines costs well over $1,000,
last time I was there I checked because I thought maybe I could get a good
deal there. But it's only something the rich can afford and as such it's a
status symbol.
So, for those among us who complain about having spend $5 or even $15 for
an
app which is now free, think again because even those among us who live on
a
fixed income and don't have too much money for extras and luxuries, live
100

times better than a very large part of the population in many countries
around the world.

Sieghard

Well, this is just a rumor, but from the rumors I've read, they wouldn't
be replacing the current iPhone with a cheaper phone, but rather just
coming out with a new less expensive phone in addition to their current
phone to capture more of the low end market. I'm not sure which cell
phone executive it was, but someone said recently they they thought all
phones would be smart phones before too long. If that's true then it
might make sense for Apple to get in on that market where cheaper smart
phones replace feature phones. I haven't heard Apple do anything but
deny this rumor. On one hand it makes sense, but on the other hand, how
much would a cheaper iPhone cut into their current iPhone sales. That
might give Apple pause since they make so much money on their current
iPhone offerings.

On 17/02/13 17:52, James Mannion wrote:

Who knows for sure what Apple will do, but some seem entirely
convinced of these rumours out there. I even heard it said yesterday
on TWIT that they believe Apple's market going forward is cheap IOS
devices. I sure hope not! Fine if they come out with a cheap IPhone
as an alternative, but I truly hope they do not make the new IPhone a
cheap piece of plastic with cheap electronics to sell it cheap. I know
the large share of the market wants cheap crap, but Apple makes
amazing profits on what they currently sell, they sell millions of
them and some of us want to buy a quality product. These people have
enough cheap crap options, they do not have to take our quality
product away from us so they can have a piece of crap called an
Iphone. Get your crap out of your breakfast box as you have been if
you are one of those people and leave us alone is my opinion!

they really don’t have the money so they finance it and pay
every month and in the end if you add it all up you pay hundreds or even
thousands more than had you saved up the money to buy an item outright.

And what I haven’t even thrown into the calculation is the fact that no
matter if you buy the phone outright or on contract, it’s worth the same
at the end of the 24 months if you sell it. However, if you paid $650
for the phone, you are maybe more inclined to keep it for another year
or so because you spend all that money for it and you would have to
again spend the same to get a new phone. If you only paid $200 for it,
you can probably sell it for that or very close to that since you can
ask for an official unlock which makes it easy to sell the phone. Then
your new phone is basically paid for by the old one.

I had bought both my iPhone 4 and 4S unlocked directly from Apple since
here in Canada you can do this and you can get it right away at the
release date in that way. However, now carriers here have to unlock your
phone after 90 days and I think I heard this maybe changing to 30 days.
This takes away one reason to buy an unlocked phone at full price which
is the fact that if you travel and want to put in somebody elses SIM you
have to have an unlocked phone. I think it makes sense and actually
don’t see why carriers lock their phone at all, after all, the fact that
they have to let you unlock it doesn’t mean you can get out of the
contract. If you do that you still have to pay out the contract which
menas essentially that you have to pay them back the amount they
 subsidized your phone for.

Awesome, so they do this without a contract also. And they take
money off your bill when you get friends to sign up? I'm just glad
to see competition in the contract-free unlimited-data mobile space.
I especially think this is important for us using these recognition
and GPS apps. I rarely talk using my phone, but with family members
deployed in the Armed Services, i find it nice if they want to call
and can't use Skype for whatever reason, I don't have to worry about
it. Personally, I think there'll be a time when carriers find it in
their best business interest to ditch the contracts, and handset
manufacturers, including Apple, will find ways to bring costs down
without the subsidies.

Yes, you will pay full price up front, but the various services that offer
this point out that after about a year, you have reached the break-even
point compared to most two-year contracts. Wall Mart offers the same kind

spent about 8 to 10 hours over the last two weeks trying to get the data
plan to work and only after finally getting through to a person that knew
the exact issue was she able to begin taking advantage of the data plan.
They apparently haven't documented in their support system how to make it
work, so you get to spend lots of hours with people giving you the same
answer and leaving it to you to finally complain loudly enough to get to
someone who knows something. Not very good customer service.

Cricket also offers an unlimited everything plan. I don't know if they are

Yes, you will pay full price up front, but the various services that offer
this point out that after about a year, you have reached the break-even
point compared to most two-year contracts. Wall Mart offers the same kind
of a deal through their Straight Talk service, but I know someone who just
spent about 8 to 10 hours over the last two weeks trying to get the data
plan to work and only after finally getting through to a person that knew
the exact issue was she able to begin taking advantage of the data plan.
They apparently haven't documented in their support system how to make it
work, so you get to spend lots of hours with people giving you the same
answer and leaving it to you to finally complain loudly enough to get to
someone who knows something. Not very good customer service.

Cricket also offers an unlimited everything plan. I don't know if they are
any better or worse than the others.

RE: A great new carier for your iPhone: unlimited everything $49 per month!

2013-02-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
A great new pyramid scheme of which there have been thousands before. If you
google Is Lightyear wireless legitimate? you find a ton of sites with
headings like Lightyear wireless: a scam or the real deal. Reading a few
of the reviews it seems that the business is definitely legitimate and
offers wireless services on a limited number of phones via the Sprint and
Verizon network. They charge $325 for you to sign up as a representative and
offer you a ton of money in return for signing up customers as well as other
reps like yourself, but I would bet my iPhone that more often than not
people will pay the $325 and end up not having much success in the long runt
o maintain the enthusiasm, drive and pushiness needed to sign up new people.
If everybody were able to do so and it was as easy as they portrait it to
be, I think they would own ATT and Verizon by now. In any case, they
advertise $60 for unlimited voice, text and data and there are others like
Straight Talk, Cricket etc. who offer the same for that price or less.
The old adage If it's too good to be true then it probably is comes to
mind.

Sieghard

Hi,

I feel I should correct one point here.

I have StraightTalk with an IPhone 5. Verizon is a much better carrier here
so that is what StraightTalk is setup on.

I asked about this and they told me that they use which ever carrier has the
better infrastructure for the local environment.

If you are curious about your area I'd suggest talking with Walmart in your
location and ask which carrier is used.

I have been very happy with my setup.

Thanks.

I am no longer in the US and haven't been for four years. Five years ago,
Cricket purchased time in selected markets only. They did not offer coverage

additional fees if one wanted service in other Cricket local areas. A person
really should read the agreement thoroughly.

RE: A great new carier for your iPhone: unlimited everything $49 per month!

2013-02-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Dan,

You are correct and I did not know that Straight Talk supported both GSM and
CDMA networks as I have always heard the name Straight Talk in conjunction
with people using it with a GSM iPhone.
I found the following article on Wikipedia which explains rather well how
Straight Talk is just one branch of a company called TracFone along with
their partnership with WalMart. According to this article bringing an
unlocked GSM iPhone to Straight Talk and simply obtaining a SIM card from
them may no longer be an option as of this month:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TracFone_Wireless

Straight Talk is another operator, through a partnership between TracFone
and Walmart, offering several different rate plans; a $30 limited plan, $45
30-day unlimited plan and a $60 unlimited international calling plan.
Discounts are available for purchasing multiple months of the unlimited
plan. Straight Talk is a Mobile Virtual Network operator (MVNO) offering
both CDMA and GSM support. The CDMA network uses Verizon's or Sprint's CDMA
1xRTT wireless networks and the GSM side makes use of either T-Mobile's or
ATT's GSM networks.

The $30 limited plan the All You Need plan which provides 1000 minutes,
1000 texts, free 411 and 30MB of data for a service period of 30 days.

The $45 unlimited plan, provides unlimited talk, texts and data. The data
does not include streaming.[9]

Straight Talk is currently exclusive to Walmart stores because of a
joint-venture program between the two companies.[10]

Straight Talk offers a variety of prepaid, no contract, phones on their
website for use with their plans. Straight Talk also allows customers to
bring a T-Mobile GSM phone or an unlocked domestic GSM phone to Straight
Talk or NET10 by buying a SIM card and air time from the company. This
program does not work with Blackberry and branded Straight Talk, SafeLink,
TracFone and NET10 phones. The program does not work with phones designed to
work on CDMA networks such as Verizon's due to incompatibility issues
between CDMA phones and GSM networks. However, there are specific phones
available from Straight Talk that use Verizon's network. The list of
compatible phones with the program includes the iPhone Family, Nokia Lumia
Family, LG Phoenix/LG Thrive, HTC Inspire and Motorola Atrix 2.[11][12]

Straight Talk formerly allowed customers to bring an ATT GSM phone or to
purchase a SIM card that offers service on ATT's network. As of February
2013, America Movil has discontinued both options from both the Straight
Talk and NET10 websites. In addition, most references (besides support
articles) have been edited to remove any mentions to ATT-compatible
service. It is unclear as to whether ATT-compatible sales have been
permanently discontinued or not. Existing customers are not impacted by this
change.

Sieghard

they have to let you unlock it doesn’t mean you can get out of the

A cheaper iPhone, was: RE: A great new carier for your iPhone: unlimited everything $49 per month!

2013-02-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I would disagree with the statement that in even the next 20 years all cell
phones will be smartphones. The percentage of smartphones is growing a lot
in North America, Europe, also in China, India and South America, but there
are so many people in the world who simply cannot afford even a $100
smartphone if it existed. I have been to the Philippines several times and
there as well as in many other Asian and also African countries tens of
millions and probably hundreds of millions of people have extremely cheap
cell phones for mainly for texting since mostly they can't even afford to
buy the credit for voice. These are $10 to $30 phones, often Nokia or
Samsung knock-offs and in the Philippines, since that is the example I know,
it costs about 1 Dollar to buy a SIM card with a number. A phone with such a
SIM can receive calls even if there is no credit on the SIM at all, for
about 20 Philippine Pesos (about 45 to 50 Cents) you can buy what they call
a load which gives you I think 100 text messages.
So, for those among us who complain about having spend $5 or even $15 for an
app which is now free, think again because even those among us who live on a
fixed income and don't have too much money for extras and luxuries, live 100
times better than a very large part of the population in many countries
around the world.

That
might give Apple pause since they make so much money on their current
iPhone offerings.

as an alternative, but I truly hope they do not make the new IPhone a
cheap piece of plastic with cheap electronics to sell it cheap. I know
the large share of the market wants cheap crap, but Apple makes
amazing profits on what they currently sell, they sell millions of
them and some of us want to buy a quality product. These people have
enough cheap crap options, they do not have to take our quality
product away from us so they can have a piece of crap called an

you are one of those people and leave us alone is my opinion!

RE: A great new carier for your iPhone: unlimited everything $49 per month!

2013-02-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Dave,

I highly doubt that at least in the short to medium term Apple will suddenly
start to sell a new iPhone for $399 or $499. Apple is one of the few
companies who is actually making a good margin on their products meaning
unlike Amazon which basically gives a Kindle Fire away at cost or even below
cost to get people to use their service, Apple sells the iPad at a price
where they make money. Keep in mind that if they sold an iPhone for a
greatly reduced price, people would no longer buy an iPod Touch and would
expect iPad and iPad Mini prices to come down as well. I somehow don't
forsee any changes in how big carriers do business and believe they will
continue to offer contracts and subsidized phones. Keep in mind that a
carrier like the one mentioned may offer an unlimited plan for $49 with no
contract, but they will not give you a 16 Gb iPhone 5 for $199, instead you
have to pay $649 and buy one at full price. The math is easy: Over 2 years
you spend 24 month times $49 a month = $1,176 + $649 for the iPhone which
means a total of $1,825.

Now assume you are on contract and spend $80 a month, the total is 24 times
$80 = $1,920 + $199 for the phone = $2,119.

So, yes, the contract does cost you $294 more over 2 years given you do
actually have a $80 plan, if you find one that is $70 which maybe gives you
2 Gig of data and limited voice, but maybe it's all you need then the total
would be $1,879 over 2 years which is only $64 more. For many people it's
easier to spend an extra $20 or $30 a months without having to come up with
the high upfront cost. It's really no different than any sort of financing,
people buy all sorts of stuff they probably shouldn't because they really
don't have the money so they finance it and pay every month and in the end
if you add it all up you pay hundreds or even thousands more than had you
saved up the money to buy an item outright.

And what I haven't even thrown into the calculation is the fact that no
matter if you buy the phone outright or on contract, it's worth the same at
the end of the 24 months if you sell it. However, if you paid $650 for the
phone, you are maybe more inclined to keep it for another year or so because
you spend all that money for it and you would have to again spend the same
to get a new phone. If you only paid $200 for it, you can probably sell it
for that or very close to that since you can ask for an official unlock
which makes it easy to sell the phone. Then your new phone is basically paid
for by the old one.

I had bought both my iPhone 4 and 4S unlocked directly from Apple since here
in Canada you can do this and you can get it right away at the release date
in that way. However, now carriers here have to unlock your phone after 90
days and I think I heard this maybe changing to 30 days. This takes away one
reason to buy an unlocked phone at full price which is the fact that if you
travel and want to put in somebody elses SIM you have to have an unlocked
phone. I think it makes sense and actually don't see why carriers lock their
phone at all, after all, the fact that they have to let you unlock it
doesn't mean you can get out of the contract. If you do that you still have
to pay out the contract which menas essentially that you have to pay them
back the amount they subsidized your phone for.

Awesome, so they do this without a contract also. And they take money off
your bill when you get friends to sign up? I'm just glad to see competition
in the contract-free unlimited-data mobile space. I especially think this is
important for us using these recognition and GPS apps. I rarely talk using
my phone, but with family members deployed in the Armed Services, i find it
nice if they want to call and can't use Skype for whatever reason, I don't
have to worry about it. Personally, I think there'll be a time when carriers
find it in their best business interest to ditch the contracts, and handset
manufacturers, including Apple, will find ways to bring costs down without
the subsidies.

Hi,

I figured most people were already aware of what I just recently learned.

Through Walmart you can get a StraightTalk plan which has unlimited voice,
texting and data for $45 per month. This is what I have and the reason I
finally felt I could afford an IPhone.

I hope this helps someone too.

It is nice to know there truly are some less expensive plans out there.

Subject: A great new carier for your iPhone: unlimited everything $49 per
month!

Hey guys,

I just found this, and it's a unlimited voice, text and data plan with
no contract for $49 per month! It's backed by the T-Mobile network,
which I find has been rolling out 3G coverage for us iPhone users for
the past year. I know here in Portland I've finally gotten to see
this, and it's really been nice. I've been a T-Mobile customer for
five years, but just switched to this new Carrier so I could pay less
and be contract-free. Message me privately if you want help or
questions answered about this one. I guess the thing that gets me, is
that now with these smartphones helping us out so much, a lot of
people don't realize how much of their data plan gets used by things
like GPS, or even object recognition apps, both of which are real
game-changers for us.
Here's the link if anyone wants to check out the service:
http://www.solavei.com/daveleo
And while there is an opportunity to share it with friends and save
even more money on your bill, you by all means don't have to: just
sign up and use the service if you're looking for another carrier,
especially one with unlimited data that doesn't throttle partway
through your month.
I wanted to put this on this list, because I've received so much from
the great apps and tips on here.
On a side note: I checked out iMove this morning, pretty spectacular
if I say so myself! It figured out where I was very very quickly. Even
more quickly than AroundMe does.
Anyway, check the above link out if you or someone you know is looking
to get a better deal or an unlimited data plan.

Thanks,

Dave

I beg to disagree, Gingerbread isn't quite up to the IPhone, but the
accessibility is pretty marvelous. I've found almost nothing that I want to do
on IPhone that i can't do on Gingerbread.
Skype, tunein radio, ebay, paypal, calendars, clock and alarms, contacts and
call history, navigon, lookaround gps, red laser bar code scanning, web
browsing with element navigation. plus some things that iphone chant do such
as allow me to connect my Iblue 737 receiver, use acapella or ivona, or four or
5 other choices, use any input method I want, flexy, braille touch, use a free
ocr app that doesn't cloud and doesn't suck, use sd cards, plug in a projector…

It would be better if they offered jelly bean phones, but gingerbread is
nothing to sneeze at.

Re: A great new carier for your iPhone: unlimited everything $49 per month!

2013-02-16 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I can't speak to the validity of these rumours, but there are always
rumours swirling around about Apple coming out with a lower end/cheaper
iPhoen, especially for specific geographic markets. I doubt they would
do this unless they start losing market share to other smart phone
providers.

On 16/02/13 08:25, Sieghard Weitzel wrote:
 Hi Dave,

I highly doubt that at least in the short to medium term Apple will
suddenly start to sell a new iPhone for $399 or $499. Apple is one of
the few companies who is actually making a good margin on their products
meaning unlike Amazon which basically gives a Kindle Fire away at cost
or even below cost to get people to use their service, Apple sells the
iPad at a price where they make money. Keep in mind that if they sold an
iPhone for a greatly reduced price, people would no longer buy an iPod
Touch and would expect iPad and iPad Mini prices to come down as well. I
somehow don’t forsee any changes in how big carriers do business and
believe they will continue to offer contracts and subsidized phones.
Keep in mind that a carrier like the one mentioned may offer an
unlimited plan for $49 with no contract, but they will not give you a 16
Gb iPhone 5 for $199, instead you have to pay $649 and buy one at full
price. The math is easy: Over 2 years you spend 24 month times $49 a
 month = $1,176 + $649 for the iPhone which means a total of $1,825.

Now assume you are on contract and spend $80 a month, the total is 24
 times $80 = $1,920 + $199 for the phone = $2,119.

So, yes, the contract does cost you $294 more over 2 years given you do
actually have a $80 plan, if you find one that is $70 which maybe gives
you 2 Gig of data and limited voice, but maybe it’s all you need then
the total would be $1,879 over 2 years which is only $64 more. For many
people it’s easier to spend an extra $20 or $30 a months without having
to come up with the high upfront cost. It’s really no different than any
sort of financing, people buy all sorts of stuff they probably shouldn’t
because they really don’t have the money so they finance it and pay
every month and in the end if you add it all up you pay hundreds or even
thousands more than had you saved up the money to buy an item outright.
