David Pondered:

but why go to all that trouble

And Victor Replies:

Because it's free.

Not everyone has the funds with which to purchase Voice Dream Reader.
Granted, DropBox is free, but the native music player does so much more than
DropBox.

In any case, I didn't think my comment would generate so much opinion
against the native music app.

I still use it, and it seems fine to me, and only use Voice Dream Reader to
read PDF and other document formats.

I understand where you’re coming from, but ever since I learned to change
the Meta tag information, stuff like that simply hasn’t happened, and you
can change that sort of information too, simply by utilizing that same Get
Info dialog box, and, of course, making sure that the shuffle feature isn’t
on in your music player.

Just thought I’d offer an alternative.

Hi.

I have chosen to use a third party app to play audio books because I
frequently found audio books that had the attributes changed and played
through the music player wouldn’t always play in the correct order. I found
that I had to use something like audio book binder or builder or mp3 to iPod
converter to make the audio book in to a long file. Now I can simply zip up
my file and import it in to voice dream reader. Much less time consuming
and every book I have tried so far plays in order.

Once in the properties of the file, press tab to get to the list of tabs,

In the options tab, press tab to get to the combo box labelled, "Media
Type:" and press the down arrow to identify the files as an audiobook file.
Once done, make sure you check the box that says, "Remember Playback
position", and the box that says, "Skip when shuffling", then tab to the ok
button, and press the spacebar.

I should mention that the above steps are for Windows based PC's or MAC's
booting Windows. I should also mention that from that point on, the files
will be located under books in your media library, they will no longer be
kept with the rest of your music, that is, unless you have auto sorting set
to off.

 Anyway, hope this helps.

 Hi Fanus,

My WiFi at home is ADSL hence it has nothing to do with my cellular data
limit. That means that as long as I am connected to my WiFi at home or at
work my cellular data is not being used and while I think there is a limit
to how much data I can use on my ADSL, it is so high that it's never been an
issue.
. I don't know what arrangement you have. WiFi can also use cellular data
if you are using some sort of hot spot or smarthub, but like I said, that is
something you probably know. When you say you have "WiFi which allows me to
connect to the cell network for internet purposes" that sounds to me like
you are using cellular data for everything.

Hi Raul,

The way iTired handled this was that you could select from 3 or 4 different
notification sounds to let you know the sleep timer was about to run out. They
were all very subtle and you could set the volume to be no louder than the book
you are listening to. The sounds were things like a drip sound, a rain sound, a
light bonk sound and so on. They really would not wake you up again and you
could set them to start let's say 10 seconds before the time would be up. Then
if you were still listening all you had to do is press the volume up or down
button once and the timer would reset itself to your 5 or 8 minutes or whatever
time you set it at. Then 10 seconds before it ran out again you would hear that
subtle sound again and so on. I am a very light sleeper and it never woke me
again, sometimes I sort of heard it as I was drifting off and I'd just let it
go.

Sieghard

Wow I don't know about that feature. For me personally that would be a bug.
When I set the sleep timer I want to use it to, well, fall asleep and not let
the book run on and on. If there was an audio alert telling me that the sleep
timer is almost up, that is like someone waking me up to say, hey, it's almost
time for you to fall asleep. So it would kind of defeats the purpose for me. If
Winston were to add such a feature I would hope it would be a toggle.

I do indeed sort my audiobooks this way and when I want to read something, I
just go and zip a particular title to upload via Voice Dream. I find iTunes
best for managing my media and I like being able to sort by genre, artist and
album title. The actual audiobook playing on the otherhand, is very lacking
with i-devices and the native app. Anyway, I use the control+I keyboard command
to edit tags if I havent’ already done so with MP3Tag before importing the book
to begin with.

audiobooks, then press your applications key, and press the letter G for Get
Info and press enter.

Once in the properties of the file, press tab to get to the list of tabs, if
not already there, and press the right arrow to get to the options tab.

In the options tab, press tab to get to the combo box labelled, "Media Type:"
and press the down arrow to identify the files as an audiobook file. Once done,
make sure you check the box that says, "Remember Playback position", and the
box that says, "Skip when shuffling", then tab to the ok button, and press the
spacebar.

I should mention that the above steps are for Windows based PC's or MAC's
booting Windows. I should also mention that from that point on, the files will
be located under books in your media library, they will no longer be kept with
the rest of your music, that is, unless you have auto sorting set to off.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Hi Fanus,

My WiFi at home is ADSL hence it has nothing to do with my cellular data limit.
That means that as long as I am connected to my WiFi at home or at work my
cellular data is not being used and while I think there is a limit to how much
data I can use on my ADSL, it is so high that it's never been an issue.
. I don't know what arrangement you have. WiFi can also use cellular data if
you are using some sort of hot spot or smarthub, but like I said, that is
something you probably know. When you say you have "WiFi which allows me to
connect to the cell network for internet purposes" that sounds to me like you
are using cellular data for everything.

I understand where you’re coming from, but ever since I learned to change the
Meta tag information, stuff like that simply hasn’t happened, and you can
change that sort of information too, simply by utilizing that same Get Info
dialog box, and, of course, making sure that the shuffle feature isn’t on in
your music player.

Just thought I’d offer an alternative.

Re: Adding audio books

2014-11-18 Thread Victor Gouveia
Everyone is stuck on using a third party app to read audiobooks, but I've
seen no one simply mention to change the file attributes from within iTunes,
at which point, the files will be classified as audiobooks and moved
accordingly.

Simply highlight the file or files you wish to instruct iTunes that they're
audiobooks, then press your applications key, and press the letter G for Get
Info and press enter.

Once in the properties of the file, press tab to get to the list of tabs, if
not already there, and press the right arrow to get to the options tab.

WiFi can also use cellular data if
you are using some sort of hot spot or smarthub, but like I said, that is
something you probably know. When you say you have "WiFi which allows me to
connect to the cell network for internet purposes" that sounds to me like
you are using cellular data for everything.

Hi Fanus,

Can't you do it on WiFi? Anyhow, to do this in iTunes, connect your phone,
go to it and in the list view which starts with Summary arrow down once to
Apps. Now tab or use F6 until you get to file sharing. Here you will find a
list of apps which are capable of iTunes file sharing. Voice Dream will be
one of these, arrow to it and then tab to the "Add" button. Browse to your
book on the computer and select it. It will take a moment or a few moments
and the book should be added, now if you sync your device the book should
transfer.

To get a book transferred to Voice Dream there is one additional step, after
synching. I just tried it, without doing this step, and the book was not in
Voice Dream when I opened it. Open Voice Dream, and tap the add button, in
the lower left of the screen. ITunes will be the first choice. Tap this,
and the books that are possible to be loaded into Voice Dream, the ones you
added before you did the synch, will be listed. Double tap the one you
want, or use the select all button. Then, flick to the left, and tap the
load button. In a bit, it will say file loaded, after which you tap the
okay button. Finally, tap the done button, and you will be in your list of
Voice Dream books.

With iTunes 12, I find this whole process a bit more challenging than it
was before.
You can search for the book in the music library, then if your search
gets
you all the files, you can right click and select get info. You will then
need to change the "kind" from music to audio book.
You will also have choices of skip when shuffling, remember your place,
which you want if it is a book.
If the files are not tagged correctly, you may find chapters out of
order.
Remember, iTunes does not care what the file names are, it sorts only by
the
internal tagging.
I believe folks on this list have recommended software that can make the
tagging and all that much easier, but I don't recall what the name was.
Personally, if I want to listen to an audio book that is in mp3 format,
I
now use VoiceDream Reader.
With VoiceDream, you simply need to make sure the files are named in
such
a way that they will be sorted in order, add them all to a zip file with
the
zip filename the name of the book. Add the zip file to dropbox, and use
VoiceDream to import the zip file.
When it is done, you will have a book that is named whatever the zip
file
was named, and each file will be treated as a chapter in the book.
  It works fabulously.

  Richard

If you can connect to your modem via WiFi from your PC and from your iPhone

Hello Sieghard
Thanks, that sounds quite easy.
I am curious. You asked if I can't do it with wifi. Well, I have a wifi
network because I have a wifi which allows me to connect to the cell network
for internet purposes. How would one do a wifi transfer?

It will take a moment or a few moments
and the book should be added, now if you sync your device the book should
transfer.

I don't know that this is less tedious, but it is necessary if you want
those files to be seen as books.
When you impoort mp3 files into iTunes, it assumes they are music. So,
depending on how the files are tagged, you may find them under artist,
title, unknown, etc. in the music folder.

RE: Adding audio books

2014-11-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, I agree with Richard and John and give my vote to Voice Dream. Listening
to MP3 audio books is a very nice experience, no more converting to a single
file with Chapter and Vers or redesignating the files from music to audio book.
I also love the way Voice Dream has implemented jumping forward and back by
chapter, time interval or by percentage and how they have done their sleep
timer. All I have asked Winston for is to also give a 5 minute jump back or
forward in addition to 30 and 60 seconds. It would also be awesome if the sleep
timer had a way to give you a subtle warning 10 or 20 seconds before it runs
out and you could reset it with a simple press of the volume up or down button.
There is an app called iTired which does that and it's a fantastic feature. I
can set my sleep timer to 5 minutes and if it take me 17 minutes to fall
asleep, I just reset it 3 times and when I wake up all I have to do to find my
place is go back 3 minutes. Maybe others can support me in asking for such a
feature.

Sieghard

Like you, I find using Voice Dream Reader much easier to use when it comes to
reading audio books and collections of old time radio shows.

I don't know that this is less tedious, but it is necessary if you want those
files to be seen as books.
When you impoort mp3 files into iTunes, it assumes they are music. So,
depending on how the files are tagged, you may find them under artist, title,
unknown, etc. in the music folder.
With iTunes 12, I find this whole process a bit more challenging than it was
before.
You can search for the book in the music library, then if your search gets
you all the files, you can right click and select get info. You will then need
to change the "kind" from music to audio book.
You will also have choices of skip when shuffling, remember your place, which
you want if it is a book.
If the files are not tagged correctly, you may find chapters out of order.
Remember, iTunes does not care what the file names are, it sorts only by the
internal tagging.
I believe folks on this list have recommended software that can make the
tagging and all that much easier, but I don't recall what the name was.
Personally, if I want to listen to an audio book that is in mp3 format, I now
use VoiceDream Reader.
With VoiceDream, you simply need to make sure the files are named in such a
way that they will be sorted in order, add them all to a zip file with the zip
filename the name of the book. Add the zip file to dropbox, and use VoiceDream
to import the zip file.
When it is done, you will have a book that is named whatever the zip file was
named, and each file will be treated as a chapter in the book.
  It works fabulously.

  Richard

If you have Voice Dream, zip the files into one file. You can use
either iTunes or even better dropbox to import them into voice dream.

Re: adding audio books

2012-11-22 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Lois,

I wonder whether it has something to do with the tags which should mark the
book as audiobook rather than music or any other genre. You need to check under
"get info" in iTunes where the book appears before you sink it to the iPhone
whether under "info' and "options" tabs the book is marked as audiobook.

Hope this helps a little.
