David Pondered: but why go to all that trouble And Victor Replies: Because it's free. Not everyone has the funds with which to purchase Voice Dream Reader. Granted, DropBox is free, but the native music player does so much more than DropBox. In any case, I didn't think my comment would generate so much opinion against the native music app. I still use it, and it seems fine to me, and only use Voice Dream Reader to read PDF and other document formats. RE: Adding audio books
Hi Raul, The way iTired handled this was that you could select from 3 or 4 different notification sounds to let you know the sleep timer was about to run out. They were all very subtle and you could set the volume to be no louder than the book you are listening to. The sounds were things like a drip sound, a rain sound, a light bonk sound and so on. They really would not wake you up again and you could set them to start let's say 10 seconds before the time would be up. Then if you were still listening all you had to do is press the volume up or down button once and the timer would reset itself to your 5 or 8 minutes or whatever time you set it at. Then 10 seconds before it ran out again you would hear that subtle sound again and so on. I am a very light sleeper and it never woke me again, sometimes I sort of heard it as I was drifting off and I'd just let it go. I do indeed sort my audiobooks this way and when I want to read something, I just go and zip a particular title to upload via Voice Dream. I find iTunes best for managing my media and I like being able to sort by genre, artist and album title. The actual audiobook playing on the otherhand, is very lacking with i-devices and the native app. Anyway, I use the control+I keyboard command to edit tags if I havent’ already done so with MP3Tag before importing the book to begin with. I've even listened to audiobooks via Downcast. Not since Voice Dream introduced the MP3 option though. Re: Adding audio books
Hi. I have chosen to use a third party app to play audio books because I frequently found audio books that had the attributes changed and played through the music player wouldn’t always play in the correct order. I found that I had to use something like audio book binder or builder or mp3 to iPod converter to make the audio book in to a long file. Now I can simply zip up my file and import it in to voice dream reader. Much less time consuming and every book I have tried so far plays in order. To get a book transferred to Voice Dream there is one additional step, after synching. I just tried it, without doing this step, and the book was not in Voice Dream when I opened it. Open Voice Dream, and tap the add button, in the lower left of the screen. ITunes will be the first choice. Tap this, and the books that are possible to be loaded into Voice Dream, the ones you added before you did the synch, will be listed. Double tap the one you want, or use the select all button. Then, flick to the left, and tap the load button. In a bit, it will say file loaded, after which you tap the okay button. Finally, tap the done button, and you will be in your list of Voice Dream books. With iTunes 12, I find this whole process a bit more challenging than it was before. You can search for the book in the music library, then if your search gets you all the files, you can right click and select get info. You will then need to change the "kind" from music to audio book. You will also have choices of skip when shuffling, remember your place, which you want if it is a book. If the files are not tagged correctly, you may find chapters out of order. Remember, iTunes does not care what the file names are, it sorts only by the internal tagging. I believe folks on this list have recommended software that can make the tagging and all that much easier, but I don't recall what the name was. Personally, if I want to listen to an audio book that is in mp3 format, I now use VoiceDream Reader. With VoiceDream, you simply need to make sure the files are named in such a way that they will be sorted in order, add them all to a zip file with the zip filename the name of the book. Add the zip file to dropbox, and use VoiceDream to import the zip file. When it is done, you will have a book that is named whatever the zip file was named, and each file will be treated as a chapter in the book. It works fabulously. RE: Adding audio books
Yes, I agree with Richard and John and give my vote to Voice Dream. Listening to MP3 audio books is a very nice experience, no more converting to a single file with Chapter and Vers or redesignating the files from music to audio book. I also love the way Voice Dream has implemented jumping forward and back by chapter, time interval or by percentage and how they have done their sleep timer. All I have asked Winston for is to also give a 5 minute jump back or forward in addition to 30 and 60 seconds. It would also be awesome if the sleep timer had a way to give you a subtle warning 10 or 20 seconds before it runs out and you could reset it with a simple press of the volume up or down button. There is an app called iTired which does that and it's a fantastic feature. I can set my sleep timer to 5 minutes and if it take me 17 minutes to fall asleep, I just reset it 3 times and when I wake up all I have to do to find my place is go back 3 minutes. Maybe others can support me in asking for such a feature. Re: adding audio books
Dear Lois, I wonder whether it has something to do with the tags which should mark the book as audiobook rather than music or any other genre. You need to check under "get info" in iTunes where the book appears before you sink it to the iPhone whether under "info' and "options" tabs the book is marked as audiobook. Hope this helps a little. adding audio books
I notice that sometimes when I add an MP3 audio book to my phone through iTunes, it will show up in the list of audio books, and sometimes it stays in play lists in the recently added. I unzip them the same way and label them the same. Does anyone have an idea why that might happen?
