Re: Cooking with terabytes
Intrigued by this giving femininity to the geek concept, but several have already said, presumption of what is meant is more irritating than just saying it as it is. Pronounce actual words, that is what TTs is for, but acronyms are an obvious minefield since they differ so widely between contexts. We, the reader, knows our context, the TTS doesn't. Ah yes, totally agree to the idea of turning off that expansion, I'd add it to spellcheck and word prediction as things I switch off from the word Go! I had heard much of Alex so when I was wandering through settings/voices last night and came upon the option to invite him into my humble iPhone, I did so! To say that I was, distinctly underwhelmed would not be overstating the case! I want to give him the "bum's rush", but now that he has his boots under the table, he doesn't seem to be inclined to leave without a struggle. Re: Cooking with terabytes
Well, having started the thread with that little slam on Mr. Alex, I think I have to defend him. Perhaps because I've used them on the Mac for several years now I really like Alex. I feel he is one of the more natural reading voices around, probably because he breeds, usually in the right place. I am underwhelmed with most of the voices that Apple provides. My favorites are actually from VoiceDream, but since I can't use those with voiceover, I use Alex. And I'm starting to use the female Siri voice enhanced for reading some novels, again because I have Kindle books and iBooks that I can't use my voice dream readers on. Re: Cooking with terabytes
I haven't found that Alex is any worse than any of the other voices. Perhaps your mileage varies depending on what you read. I did notice that the GM or gold master turned into grams. Which I thought was interesting. I'm sure there are many of these, and they've been happening for years. I still say the best thing is to just leave it alone and let us figure out where the abbreviation means according to context. Sighted people do it all the time. Why can't we? Re: Cooking with terabytes
The one that really annoys me is pretty recent; Samantha says defeaturing anytime the word defeat is used. It doesn't seem to do this if you move word by word, but if you come across it when VoiceOver is just speaking, as when flicking right/left, Samantha says it the way I described. I'll have to test this to see if it happens with other voices. Thanks, Ari > On Sep 21, 2015, at 9:03 AM, Jonathan Mosenwrote: > > Indeed, my wife was reading a book the other day, in which one of the > characters ended up dying of terabytes. > To follow all the political excitement in Australia last week, I was > listening to a station in Sydney called 2 G B, which default Daniel, my voice > of choice, called 2 Gigabytes. > I also find Alex spells out a lot of things, such as email addresses and > Twitter IDs.
