Re: Draining Battery

2017-07-23 Thread Deidre Muccio
Dulce, a few more things you can do our two Turn auto brightness down to zero,
turn cellular data off, manually lock your screen even if it's set to
automatically lock every few minutes. Also you can look under battery for what
programs are hogging the most have the most usage. It'll list them there an
order and show you how much they have used in the last 24 hours or whatever
time sequence you've set. So things like tune in radio or Facebook or are
likely to be top your list if you used those particular applications. Obviously
location tracking GPS and map applications as you must already know are also
going to use a lot of battery up fairly quickly. But look at manage storage
and under that I think is where battery usage is listed and take a look so that
you can get an idea what applications are using the most battery.

Re: Voiceover draining battery since 10.1 update

2016-11-08 Thread Sherrie
I have had some occasional battery issues with my 6S in the last month or so
but have not gone to 10.1.1 yet.

I would wake up with a 100% charge and then get the low battery before noon
even when I was not using the phone at all. Then I would use the battery case
to recharge and that got used up and I had to actually plug the phone in. It
did this for two days this weekend before I thought to reboot. Fixed the
problem for now. I imagine that is what probably fixed it a month ago but I
wasn’t paying attention to why it started working normally.
I really need to remember that rebooting can fix many problems!

There will always be crashes, I recently went to the Apple Store in Calgary
because my iPhone 6S Plus shut down several times when I was out and about and
when it was a bit colder outside. I keep the iPhone against my body so even
when it’s cold and I pull it out the phone is warm and while I could see it
shutting off when it’s -30 outside and I keep it out for a longer period of
time, it was not even 0 (or 32 as you americans would say). It was a few
degrees above 0, so around the mid to high 30’s) and whenever I restarted the
phone I would barely put in my PIN when it shut down again. Anyhow, I had
iPhones since the 4S in 2010 and none of them has ever done this so I assumed
it was maybe a faulty sensor inside the phone. The girl at the Apple Store ran
the full diagnostic and said she could see multiple crashes and suggested that
it is a good idea to reboot iPhones in general maybe once a week as this helps
to avoid certain issues which may arise when a phone has not been rebooted for
a very long time. Anyhow, I then upgraded to iOS 10.1.1 and the problem of my
phone shutting down persisted so I went back to the Apple Store, explained the
issue to a different Apple Genious and he agreed that this sounded strange and
since I have Apple Care Plus he replaced my phone. Since this was a warranty
replacement and not an accidental damage replacement this didn’t cost me a dime
except of course the time it took to get my new phone going again. Since it’s
been some time when I set up as a new phone I decided to do this. Calgary is
not home so I had brought my laptop and did it at the Apple Store, a very nice
guy at the “setup table” helped me throughout the process since I had all my
apps on my laptop with the latest updates and thought it would be faster to
sync them than to redownload them one by one. Since of course this is not
currently possible with Windows, Jaws and iTunes, the Apple guy checked off all
the apps I wanted and then got the sync going.

Sieghard

This would mean just to do a power cycle, turn off the phone completely, wait

I rarely find a reason to use the power button + home key combination to to a

Hi Sieghard,

just to clarify, when you say reboot, do you mean, turning your handset off and
back on again, or a hard reboot, with the power and home key?

Dave.

I’m currently doing a complete restore of my iPhone, which means I’ll have to
download all the Navigon maps and fix other settings.

The problem occurred at home with a good connexion to our network. I find it
interesting that turning VoiceOver off cures the problem, so the internet
connexion couldn’t be the issue.

Hello fellow listers,

After doing the iOS 10.1 update on my 64 GB iPhone SE, I noticed a sudden
excessive battery drain while not using my iPhone.
I turned off all background refresh activities for all apps. I left two apps in
the App Switcher: Kobo and Audible.
With VoiceOver active but the screen locked, the battery drain was between 4
and 5% per hour.
I then turned VoiceOver off and locked the screen. After an hour, there was no
noticeable battery drain.
I Therefore conclude that VoiceOver is draining my battery.

I’ve reported this to Apple Accessibility.

And how do you turn off the phone completely without a hard reboot? I am
unsure, do you just hold down the power button for some number of seconds

This would mean just to do a power cycle, turn off the phone completely, wait
about 30 seconds and then turn it on again.

I rarely find a reason to use the power button + home key combination to to a
hard reboot.

The 10.2 update doesn’t show on my phone yet. Is this still in beta?

God bless!

There is an update to IOS 10.2 available, perhaps you’d like to try this to see
if it’s a bug they’ve already fixed?

I’m currently doing a complete restore of my iPhone, which means I’ll have to
download all the Navigon maps and fix other settings.

The problem occurred at home with a good connexion to our network. I find it
interesting that turning VoiceOver off cures the problem, so the internet
connexion couldn’t be the issue.

This would mean just to do a power cycle, turn off the phone completely, wait
about 30 seconds and then turn it on again.
I rarely find a reason to use the power button + home key combination to to a
hard reboot.

Hi Sieghard,

just to clarify, when you say reboot, do you mean, turning your handset off and
back on again, or a hard reboot, with the power and home key?

2016-11-04 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Sieghard,

I, too, have had iPhones since June 2009 and this is the first one to crash on
me. It isn’t as though I don’t use it for much either. I do a lot of reading on
my iPhone, as well as using OCR, GPS, barcode recognition, Talking Goggles,
Light Detector, news apps, and so on.
I shut down my iPhone every night, too.
Restoring to factory settings isn’t too bad for me as I back up my iPhone to my
Mac, so no apps to download.

Cheers,

Anne

At this point, you can delete all the third-party applications and see if the
problem still persists. It would be a big sacrifice, but if you want to
continue troubleshooting...

Re: VoiceOver draining battery since 10.1 update

2016-11-03 Thread Anne Robertson
I’ve been in correspondence with Apple Accessibility about this problem which
occurred again on updating to iOS 10.1.1. However, this time, turning VoiceOver
off didn’t fix the problem.
They asked me to send them the crash logs which I did, and they saw that
VoiceOver had been crashing multiple times and suggested a clean install. I
had, of course, already done this.
I wonder what it is about my particular phone or setup that is causing this
problem.

Anne

RE: VoiceOver draining battery since 10.1 update

2016-11-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Fanus,

I doubt it would and so far Anne’s post is the only one I saw on this list that
there is a battery drain issue. I didn’t ask if she just updated or if she
followed the few precautions I usually like to follow, primarily to close all
apps from the app switcher and to at least reboot the device or, even better,
do a Reset Network Settings. I know she feels Voiceover was to blame and maybe
this is so, but often a Reset Network Settings may fix battery drain issues and
it’s something to try before going through the trouble to reset your device and
start from scratch. I usually only do this every couple of years when I get a
new phone and I find it is at least 2-3 hours of work depending on how many
apps you have which you need to open separately and sign in. These would be for
email/online file storage accounts such as OneDrive and Dropbox, apps like
Expedia, Hotels.com, financial/banking apps, home automation apps such as
thermostats, video cameras, weather station and on and on. It is tedious
especially if like me you use different and complicated passwords as well as
two-factor authentication where possible.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: VoiceOver draining battery since 10.1 update

2016-10-31 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Did you try a Reset Network Settings first, this often will fix battery issues
and it leaves all your apps and settings alone, all you have to do is sign back
in to your WiFi.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Background apps draining battery question

2012-12-22 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Keith,

As I understand it, and app is completely closed if it isn't in the app
switcher, so it can't drain the battery. However, if you set up mail to do
push, for example, it will check for mail frequently, thus using battery. You
might check to see which apps send you push notifications and turn that feature
off for apps you don't care about. Also, some apps check your location
frequently. If you set up a location-based reminder, for example, such as
reminding you to do something when you leave the current location, it will
check frequently to see whether you've left that location.

HTH,
Anna

 Thanks. Keith
