hi, let me clarify things a bit. There is  actually a slightly different way that I have always done.
1. Open Mail settings 
2. Click on the Gmail account 
3. Just below the Gmail account heading, there is a button labeled with  
account and  the name of your account, click on this button.
4.  Click on the advanced button near the bottom of the screen 
5. IN here there is a Heading labeled “Move discarded messages in to” with two 
choices Deleted Mailbox and Archive Mailbox.

Choose Deleted Mailbox to have the button on the bottom left labeled as delete.

In order to do that, you have to go into settings, accounts, select your Gmail 
account, and go to mailbox behaviors, and select the trash folder for the 
deleted folder. trash folder for deleted messages. This will fix the problem.

instead of archives. Joseph told me how, and I did, but don't remember how. 
Once there, there is Select all, and you can delete them all in one whack. In 
the past, before I had mine set up that way, I have done like 5,000, and it
