We use to call it joined up writing when the characters were written rather
then printed. I was expecting better results but hand writing didn't seem
to work all that well. Printing like a 5 year old worked better but I
expected it to go much faster. Hopefully when I get my 5s it will.

I was just picturing upper and lower case letters from the Optacon days in
my head.

This is sort of off topic, but in the 1970's when I was trying to learn
Morse code, when I'd hear the letters it was like feeling them with the
Optacon first then the Braille equivalent. I often picture a printed word
first which is odd.

I can even, with difficulty in some cases write a note that is mostly
readable based on my years with the Optacon.

RE: Handwriting is here in IOS7!

2013-09-19 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi Annie,

I guess, all the people who are blind from birth who did learn to use the
Optacon had to learn print block letters and script. The people who had
access to raised line drawing on machines like the Thermoform and others. I
think most totally blind people from birth did learn how to sign their name
but, that only covers very few letters of the alphabet.

There are only 26 letters in the print alphabet so, I would think you could
learn quite quickly if you contacted a group who do raised line drawing on
that plastic paper.

What I'm wondering is if IOS 7 will accept all capital block letters. If it
does, there are only 26 letters to learn.

As for the letters where you have to lift your finger, they are drawn with
one finger and they planned the swiping to be done with 2 fingers so timing
is probably the key. I'm looking forward to trying it.

2013-09-18 Thread Joseph FreeTech
I agree. ...I'm wondering, how will this handwriting feature determine when
one is finished writing the current letter rather than a new letter? For
example, when writing the upper case letter E one must lift finger off of
screen to draw the 3 horizontal dashes. How will this handwriting feature
know I'm not wanting to draw a new letter? Guess this is some
experimentation worth looking forward to. Smile.

Maccessibility » Review - iOS 7 and VoiceOver
 http://maccessibility.net/2013/09/18/review-ios-7-and-voiceover/

The Pen Is Mightier Than the Keyboard

With the popularity of apps like Fleksy and MBraille, it is clear that
 some

users find text entry on the software keyboard cumbersome or difficult,
especially in certain situations. I must confess, I do not use either of
these apps, as I have found my speed on the onscreen keyboard to be
satisfactory, and use dictation when typing is inconvenient.

That being said, Apple has provided a new feature to VoiceOver users that
 is

a pretty impressive alternative to typing your text entry. Tucked away,
hidden at the bottom of the option rotor settings in VoiceOver's settings,
is an option simply called Handwriting.

When entering text, you can select Handwriting from the rotor, and then
use the screen as a canvas to literally draw printed characters. By
 default

it starts in the category of lower case letters, but also includes
recognition for uppercase letters, numbers, and punctuation.

Simply draw a letter as it appears in printed form, and it is entered into
the text field. Three-finger swipes up and down will change the category
 of

character type you are entering. A two-finger swipe right will input a
space, and a two-finger swipe left will backspace.

If you know the shapes of printed characters, a little practice will find
you entering letters at a pretty good clip in this mode. Having already
mastered a pretty speedy technique with keyboard entry on my iOS devices,
 it

has not yet overtaken my typing speed, but I can see where it might
eventually, and certainly could for others who have trouble with keyboard
entry. There are also occasions when typing is not optimal, such as in
 noisy

surroundings, and this would definitely be handy in those situations.

The great thing about doing text entry in this way, is that it limits the
learning curve for those who are already familiar with the shapes of
 printed

letters to almost zero. For those who are not, this is a great excuse to
 learn.

You can also enter your pass code, if you keep one on your device, using
 the

handwriting feature, and it will even default to numbers for this purpose.

The Handwriting feature has other uses and modes, too. If turned on while
you're on the home screen, you can start writing letters on the screen,
 and

a list of apps beginning with those letters appears. Apps in this list can
be anywhere on your device, and are not limited to those on the current
screen or in the current folder. Use a two-finger swipe up or down to move
through the list, and double-tap, as usual, to activate the app you want.
Those who are familiar with the Item Chooser on Mac will find this
 functionality very familiar.

When in web content, such as in Safari, Handwriting mode has yet another
use. Write a letter corresponding to a rotor option, and VoiceOver
 switches

to that form of navigation. For example, writing H switches to Headings,
and two-finger swipes up and down will move you through the headings on
 the

page. Draw an L, and now you are navigating links. This will be
particularly nice for users who keep a lot of items in their rotor and
 want

a faster way to move through various HTML element types.

The accuracy of the recognition of this mode is superb, and with just a
little practice, many users are likely to find they enjoy this form of
 text

entry. Hats off to Apple for incorporating this in such a fluid and
 intuitive way.

 Joseph

RE: Handwriting is here in IOS7!

2013-09-18 Thread Louise Redsull
I only know a few letters too but might consider trying to learn them again.
I always found it confusing how you had different patterns for upper and
lower case letters, having to learn two alphabets instead of one, and that's
before you even think about joined up writing.

Louise.

Annie,

I am also blindfrom birth and can't handwrite, apart from signing my name. I
used to know the whole alphabet but can't remember it now !

I am thinking, though, if you can use this in an ordinary document, you
could actually learn how to handwrite so that it was readable! Am I thinking
too far ahead! Perhaps so, but I do think it has possibilities for a number
of people. Well done to Apple!

Re: Handwriting is here in IOS7!

2013-09-18 Thread Joseph FreeTech
I'm assuming it is no different than the symbolic patterns you have
learned to type Braille characters. In other words, you have learned that
you must place your fingers in a certain position to type the letter t, so
it is now a matter of teaching your brain to automatically generate that
same reflexive response to execute a single stroke from top to bottom then
another stroke from left to right to handwrite the letter T. Again, with
time and practice (just like you did when learning Braille characters), your
muscle memory can be nonconciously utilized to type words using
alpha-numeric strings of letters. I will also add that learning upper case
letter will be easier than writing lower case letters.

Re: Handwriting is here in IOS7!

2013-09-18 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Carol, what an excellent idea! One can actually use this handwriting utility
to practice and eventually learn how to write. VoiceOver will definitely
give the user some sort of feedback when the letter is entered correctly, so
why not use this to one's advantage in learning how to write letters when
the letter has not been recognized by IOS. Also makes for a great time
killer while waiting at the dentist office. ...Look at that, IOS7 has given
us a free writing instructor! Smile.

Re: Handwriting is here in IOS7!

2013-09-18 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Oh wait, I just thought of something... Since one has to use the rotor to
select this handwriting mode, this is probably how Apple worked around the
possibility of mistaking the strokes necessary to write a letter T from an
IOS swiping gesture. In other words, it is the Rotor that tells IOS to
ignore finger strokes and not think of them as gestures.

The accuracy of the recognition of this mode is superb

Re: Handwriting is here in IOS7!

2013-09-18 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Hi Rob,

While thinking about this a bit... Apple may have worked around this by
allowing just the slightest delay when executing the finger strokes used to
handwrite an upper case letter E or letter T. That is, similar to how a
double-tap work, the faster you execute the double-tap, the more likely you
are to launch an app. If you want to double-tap, and if you wait too long,
the double-tap will be registered as a single tap. This same tiny delay is
probably used to register letters that necessitate the lifting of one's
fingers off of the screen. ...Just thinking out loud. Smile.

Re: Handwriting is here in IOS7!

2013-09-18 Thread Arianna
No. Think geek sells a stylist that works with the iPhone. If you've ever seen
the gloves that you can wear while typing on the iPhone, it's the same
principle. Regular gloves block the conduction of electricity from your fingers
to the iPhone screen. That's why there's silver threads running through them. I
don't mean silver colored threads, but actual silver. At least, I'm pretty sure
it's actual silver. I would think that the stylus works similarly.

Thanks,
Ari

Re: Handwriting is here in IOS7!

2013-09-18 Thread Arianna
Probably you're right about the muscle memory thing. Also, I can attest to the
fact that learning uppercase is easier than learning lowercase. In fact, most
of the print I know is uppercase. I learned off license plates, so I do know
some forms of lowercase letters, but I am definitely not proficient with print.
This new handwriting feature will probably give me an incentive to learn. I'll
have fun with it, at least.

Thanks,
Ari

Usually when people say that something is hand written, they mean cursive,
or at least, that's what I've noticed. I'll be interested to try out this
feature and see how it works with my horrible printing. :)

 Thanks,
 Ari

I have RP, so I lost my vision gradually once I entered my teens.
Consequently, I was taught how to write, and I'm old enough for that to
include cursive, so I'll be interested in this new feature.

Re: Handwriting is here in IOS7!

2013-09-18 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Hi John,

I also don't like that it is difficult to swipe on an IOS device screen
after one washes his or her hands. I often have to repeatedly swipe my
fingertips on some sort of cloth, but out of impatience, often that cloth
turns out to be my shirt. I do this to completely dry off all moisture from
my fingers, and if I need to get something sent off, I execute a scrub
gesture on my forearm to get my fingers all oily again. Smile.

Will definitely have to look into a stylus for my iPod.

Using a stylus is a great idea as the finger gets sweaty sometimes.
They are easily available since they are still used for portable game
machines.

Really?

I haven’t noticed this distinction made much. For example, If someone says, I
have a hand written note, I don’t think it’s implied that the note is written
in cursive or, printed. It just mean the note is written using the person
hand, and some sort of manual writing implement. haha.

I know, it really doesn’t matter. Just saying. Plus, I could easily be
mistaken. :)

RE: Handwriting is here in IOS7!

2013-09-18 Thread Rose Combs
I was just picturing upper and lower case letters from the Optacon days in
my head.

This is sort of off topic, but in the 1970's when I was trying to learn
Morse code, when I'd hear the letters it was like feeling them with the
Optacon first then the Braille equivalent. I often picture a printed word
first which is odd.

I can even, with difficulty in some cases write a note that is mostly
readable based on my years with the Optacon.

Those old people amongst us who used an Optacon should be able to remember
the letters. I think that they are using printed letters rather than cursive
since they areeasier to recognize.

I am thinking, though, if you can use this in an ordinary document,
you could actually learn how to handwrite so that it was readable! Am
I thinking too far ahead! Perhaps so, but I do think it has
possibilities for a number of people. Well done to Apple!

I wonder if it accepts print or cursive? I for one do not know
cursive and it'd be nice if you can print.

What's even more important about the handwriting, is that Apple is
