The public beta is not out yet.

Someone on this list has gotten invites privately and cannot share that link.

Another list posted a link to beta profiles for developers that I guess someone
has made available but that is a violation of Apple’s Non Disclosure Agreement,
so I deleted that email.

Usually it is the month after the WWDC before the public betas are available.

You could try going to https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/

And see if you can sign up.

#WWDC: VoiceOver Gains New Image Description Capabilities among other Changes
J.J. Meddaugh Jun 22, 2020 7:25 PM ET

Like just about everything else these days, Apple's worldwide developers
conference has switched to a virtual format for 2020. But a variety of new
features have been announced across Apple's line of devices, including some new
VoiceOver improvements.
While few details have been shared, VoiceOver appears to be gaining several
features to help navigate apps and web pages which may be lacking proper
accessibility support. Apple will try to identify controls that are not
properly labeled, and also provide more verbose descriptions for images,
including images on websites.
Outside of VoiceOver, Siri claims to be able to answer more questions with
direct answers, instead of the classic "I can search the web for that"
response. You can also send audio messages directly from Siri, or send your ETA
to someone.
Apple grabs one of Android's top features in on-device dictation, useful on an
airplane or another location where Internet access may be spotty. Speaking of
Android features, iOS is gaining new ways to organize apps, and enhanced
support for app widgets.
In messages, you can now pin up to nine conversations to the top of the screen
for easy access. And the most important feature of all, a new face covering
option for your Memoji.
There of course is a lot more than this. You can watch the keynote or [view a
near-complete list of new features from
Apple..'(https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-14-preview/features/) Here are the
specific features listed under the accessibility heading:

VoiceOver Recognition
On-device intelligence recognizes key elements displayed on your screen to add
VoiceOver support for app and web experiences that don t have accessibility
support built in.

VoiceOver Recognition: Image descriptions
VoiceOver reads complete-sentence descriptions of images and photos within apps
and on the web.

VoiceOver Recognition: Text recognition
VoiceOver speaks the text it identifies within images and photos.

VoiceOver Recognition: Screen recognition
VoiceOver automatically detects interface controls to aid in navigating your
apps, making them more accessible.

Headphone Accommodations
This new accessibility feature is designed to amplify soft sounds and adjust
certain frequencies for an individual s hearing, to help music, movies, phone
calls, and podcasts sound more crisp and clear. Headphone Accommodations also
supports Transparency mode on AirPods Pro, making quiet voices more audible and
tuning the sounds of your environment to your hearing needs.

2020-06-23 Thread Mary Otten
According to what I read, if you choose to enact this library functionality,
Apple will put your apps into folders where it thinks they belong. Now I
suppose you could go in and change that. But I would just to soon do it myself
to start with, rather than having Apple do it for me.

Mary,

I'd be very surprised if iOS 14 corrects the native Mail app focus issue if
they were unable to correct it through the multiple iterations of iOS 13.
Fortunately, Outlook for iOS is working great for me and doesn't have the
focus issue so I'm done with the native Mail app.

In all the coverage of the online event today, I have seen absolutely
nothing about anything new for Accessibility, voiceover or otherwise. Thats
not unusual. But sometimes they show stuff on the slides that they dont

and if anyone knows of anything publicly shown at the event regarding
voiceover accessibility. I can certainly think of some things. Fix the focus

RE: New for voiceover and iOS 14 and Mac operating system big sur

2020-06-23 Thread Richard Turner
>From Blind Bargains today:
#WWDC: VoiceOver Gains New Image Description Capabilities among other Changes
J.J. Meddaugh Jun 22, 2020
7:25 PM ET

You can watch the
keynote or [view a near-complete
list of new features from
Apple..'(https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-14-preview/features/) Here are the
specific features listed under the accessibility heading:

I didn’t read anything that said they would force you to organize your apps in
a particular way. It seems like Apple is giving you more options on how to
organize your apps and manage your home pages and not taking options away from
people.

I’m concerned over what they are proposing for app organization: I want to
organize my apps the way I think they should be organized, rather than how they
think they should be. I skip page one with the widgets, meaning the rest of my
apps are on three pages, arranged in folders, with the apps in each being in
alphabetical order.

I’d suggest not jumping to conclusions,
We only got to see / hear about the new features, I’m sure they have things
planned for those that don’t want to jump yet in to the change.

RE: New for voiceover and iOS 14 and Mac operating system big sur

2020-06-22 Thread Alan Lemly
Mary,

I'd be very surprised if iOS 14 corrects the native Mail app focus issue if
they were unable to correct it through the multiple iterations of iOS 13.
Fortunately, Outlook for iOS is working great for me and doesn't have the focus
issue so I'm done with the native Mail app.

Subject: New for voiceover and iOS 14 and Mac operating system big sur

In all the coverage of the online event today, I have seen absolutely nothing
about anything new for Accessibility, voiceover or otherwise. Thats not
unusual. But sometimes they show stuff on the slides that they dont announce.
I havent seen anything about Accessibility and any of the tech articles I have
read. I wonder if anybody saw this with a sighted person, and if anyone knows
of anything publicly shown at the event regarding voiceover accessibility. I
can certainly think of some things. Fix the focus bug and email would be my
number one, and thats not a new problem.

Thanks, richard. I didn’t even think Jonathan was in the business of doing
reviews anymore. So I will definitely check this out.

Re: New for voiceover and iOS 14 and Mac operating system big sur

2020-06-22 Thread Michael Feir
There was absolutely no mention of new accessibility features in the
keynote this year. That's not alltogether bad given how much they added
last time which needed to be improved upon. Looking at the cessions
scheduled over the week which have been revealed so far, pickings are slim
for accessibility. There's a cession on using the VoiceOver custom rotor
capability. A couple of others deal with accessibility including one
dedicated to creating accessible apps on Big Sur. I have yet to see full
release notes on the various operating systems. That can often reveal
VoiceOver improvements not mentionned.

There was nothing accessibility related in the state of the platform
speech. That doesn't mean that there are no substantial accessibility
improvements. I suppose it does mean that there's unlikely to be any major
mind-blowing accessibility upgrades this time around. However, a number of
the new features discussed would certainly be of help to blind users.
Nothing struck me as particularly likely to be inaccessible to VoiceOver.

iOS13 saw a number of pretty largescale accessibility features added but
also saw a marked dip in quality control. Frankly, I'd be delighted if
things just worked and we weren't faced with any nasty bugs this time
around. I think it's actually pretty likely that iOS14 will be a much
smoother ride in that regard.

The game's not over yet. Often, more videos and cessions get added as these
things progress. Also, there are the Apple Design awards on June 29th.
Quite often, I've heard about accessible apps during those presentations.
There are also a ton of labs and appointments with Apple engineers with
nosy non-developers like me don't have accesss to. Those behind the scenes
discussions might well result in apps being made accessible after the
event. I intend to keep a close ear on things.

New for voiceover and iOS 14 and Mac operating system big sur

2020-06-22 Thread Mary Otten
In all the coverage of the online event today, I have seen absolutely nothing
about anything new for Accessibility, voiceover or otherwise. That’s not
unusual. But sometimes they show stuff on the slides that they don’t announce.
I haven’t seen anything about Accessibility and any of the tech articles I have
read. I wonder if anybody saw this with a sighted person, and if anyone knows
of anything publicly shown at the event regarding voiceover accessibility. I
can certainly think of some things. Fix the focus bug and email would be my
number one, and that’s not a new problem.
