Re: Apple rumors about not upgrading over the air

2017-09-22 Thread Brian Albriton
I used update through itunes on a regular basis with good results.
However, the last three times I did this the phone went in to a mode
where itunes would not see it. The message on the screen as reported
by the tech at the store each time was connect to itunes.
Unfortunately, at this point, I would not get any feedback from the
phone or the computer when the phone was connected. I've no
explanation for this, this is just what occurred. Someone told me it
might have been in DFu mode. All the best, Brian

Hello,

Beta testers were strongly encouraged to update over the air throughout the
entire beta process. Restore images were offered, so it was possible to update
via iTunes, but the recommended way was over the air. So I'm sure doing the
non-beta update over the air is fine as well.

No, I am saying that I didn't have a problem updating, that's all.

Is there someone here who did the update through ITunes who does not have
any of the known bugs? I wasn't aware.

I'm patiently waiting for the fix to come out. I chose to try it, so
patient I will be.

I'm with Sieghard on this one. I can see where updating with iTunes
would have some advantages, namely you don't need to have as much free
space on your phone and you get more status feedback during the update,
but once the update is on your phone, I"d think the update process is
pretty much the same.

There are benefits, depending on your usage, for installing iOS via
iTunes. Since the iOS image needs to exist on the phone before it can be
installed from the phone, your storage habbits may not allow you to
actually do an over the air update without deciding which app you want
to

(hopefully temporarily!) delete. Considering an iTunes update first
installs the OS, then restores your data from the backup it hopefully
pulled from your phone pre-update, it's not unreasonable to assume it
blows what's currently on the phone away before doing the install.

I did mine over the air, as I have done nine times out of ten over the
years, and I had no issues at all, and really never have.

I'm with Sieghard on this one. I can see where updating with iTunes
would have some advantages, namely you don't need to have as much free
space on your phone and you get more status feedback during the update,
but once the update is on your phone, I"d think the update process is
pretty much the same.

I remember back during the iOS 8 roll-out, that a genius at the Apple
Store told me the same thing about how for best results, one should elect
to update via iTunes.

If memory serves, I do recall reading some anecdotal data, on the web,
back then, confirming such a notion.

Hay, it can’t hurt to try, right? (smile)

I think if I were going to update today, I would elect to do so via
iTunes, just in case there’s even the slightest chance of having a better
experience.

Perhaps some brave soul, who has already updated via OTA should reinstall
via iTunes and let us know. (Big Smile).

If an over the air update just “patches iOS 10” then why is it a 2 Gb
download? I think whoever said this doesn’t really know what they are
talking about and I bet if you update via iTunes you have the same issues
as everybody else. In any case, when I clicked “Check for Updates” in
iTunes it told me it could not contact the update server and while this
may have temporary, the over the air update took 18 minute sfrom start of
download to Voiceover starting up again after the update so it couldn’t
have gone more smmothly.

There are benefits, depending on your usage, for installing iOS via
iTunes. Since the iOS image needs to exist on the phone before it can be
installed from the phone, your storage habbits may not allow you to
actually do an over the air update without deciding which app you want to
(hopefully temporarily!) delete. Considering an iTunes update first
installs the OS, then restores your data from the backup it hopefully
pulled from your phone pre-update, it's not unreasonable to assume it
blows what's currently on the phone away before doing the install.

Apple helpdesk would have told him not to update over the air but update
with Itunes 12.7.
If you do so, most of the known bugs will not occur. Updating over the

If you do it over itunes, really the whole ios will be deleted and

Subject: Apple rumors about not upgrading over the air

Hi folks

I want to post a short storey about someone I know that contacted Apple about
the buggy ios11.

Apple helpdesk would have told him not to update over the air but update with
Itunes 12.7.

If you do so, most of the known bugs will not occur. Updating over the air
would result in a kind of adaptations, fixes in ios10 so that after the upgrade
ios11 will come up and install.
If you do it over itunes, really the whole ios will be deleted and replaced by
the new one.
I have difficulties to believe this.
What are the opinions?
Regards
Davy

RE: Apple rumors about not upgrading over the air

2017-09-21 Thread James Homuth
There are benefits, depending on your usage, for installing iOS via iTunes.
Since the iOS image needs to exist on the phone before it can be installed
from the phone, your storage habbits may not allow you to actually do an
over the air update without deciding which app you want to (hopefully
temporarily!) delete. Considering an iTunes update first installs the OS,
then restores your data from the backup it hopefully pulled from your phone
pre-update, it's not unreasonable to assume it blows what's currently on the
phone away before doing the install.

Importance: High

I have to say that I think this is rubbish.
I generally do over the air updates, the only ones I do via iTunes is if I
get a new iPhone, want to restore from an iTunes backup, but the IOS needs
to be updated before that can be done. can't say I have noticed any real
differences.
