RE: Audible app update 2.1 has arrived

2013-03-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Adrienne,

I think in all fairness saying the Audible app is inaccessible is a bit
extreme. The app in fact is perfectly accessible with the exception of
Button-Free mode which by the way, was also inaccessible in previous
versions. Yes, you could get into button-free mode easy enough by double
tapping on the button, but the gestures would not register unless you turned
Voiceover off.

I totally like the new Audible app and think it's far better than the old
version with the exception of 2 or 3 features which are not so much
inaccessible but missing. Many of us including myself were bugging Audible
to provide a better way to delete books or parts of books without having to
start playing each part of a book in order to get to the Info button where
you could then delete it. Audible has done that and in my opinion has done
it very nicely. Also being able to download an entire 5 or 6 part book
without having to tap on each part is very nice as is the fact that download
progress is displayed. Like I said, there are many nice things about the app
and all of them are perfectly accessible and every time I write to Audible I
make sure that I point out how much I in fafct like the new app and its
features, only then do I also point out the 2 or 3 missing features or
things that have to be made accessible like giving Voiceover the ability to
say which Chapter is playing on the Chapters and Bookmarks page.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hello

I have also contacted Audible in connection with the decrease in
accessibility of the so-called update of this app and would encourage as
many people as possible to do so. It is just unacceptable.

I don't know quite why the lack of consideration for VO users should
surprise me, we are talking about the same people who brought us the VO
disabled Kindle.

Anyone know if it's possible to revert to an earlier, accessible, version?

Best

 Hi Sieghard,

I hadn't seen your prior note. Did you have trouble accessing the button-free
mode from the instructions in my note?

Anyway, yes, I absolutely agree that this should be universally discoverable
whether someone uses VO or not.

However, from my own experience as a developer, not all VO gestures can be
captured and communicated to the app, without making some special
arrangements in such app to recreate those gestures. For example, last time
 I checked, a developer couldn't actually capture a three-finger swipe upward
/ downward but could capture the left / right swipes.

So in essence, what this means is that without creating a special area on the
screen where VO lets certain gestures pass through automatically, there's no
way for an app to know what gesture a user has done. this happens because
Voiceover intercepts certain gestures before they actually reach the app.

So while some VO gestures are easily integrated with a mainstream app, not
all gestures are. Some would take a bit of work / creativity on the part of
the developers to come up with analogs for.

However, having said all this, I still agree with you and I'd even go further
to say that the button-free mode could be a whole lot neater in its
 implementation, even for sighted users.

The idea that you can only access the jump forward feature on one, and only
one, screen is really poor design in my opinion. Even for a sighted user, how
would you know you needed to swipe up to go into this obscure special mode so
you can use gestures to navigate your book if you wanted to?… this is sooo
 not discoverable…

Lastly, I'd also be curious to know why the scrub feature is not accessible
with VO. it's really quite maddening to deal with. Audible should definitely
be aware of this as I'm sure it's not their intention to isolate or segregate
 a segment of their users…

Anyway, thanks for your thoughtful note!

I, too, really like the new update. However, I do miss the fast forward/rewind
buttons that would let you move through files at different speeds. Because this
feature seems to no longer be available, and because the percentage slider is

2013-03-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Adrienne,

It is absolutely a good idea to contact them. As for finding your place in a
book with 2-hour chapters shouldn't be too hard since the app does have a
sleep timer and you can set it now to as short as 8 minutes or there is 15
minutes or 30 minutes. If the sleep timer ends and you are still awake you
can always tap play again and reset the sleep timer. The sleep timer also
has a setting which plays until the end of the current chapter, but if you
are at the beginning of a very long chapter this may still not be so good.
Another thing you can do is set your Jump Back interval to 90 seconds in the
Settings. What I do is go and find the beginning of a chapter I remember,
then I go to the next chapter. Now I find the Jump Back button, hold it and
split tap with another finger. I can do this 10 or 20 times in a few seconds
very fast and if my jump interval is set to 90 seconds, even just 10 taps
will get you back 15 minutes and I find this pretty efficient.

Don't get me wrong, I also want them to at least have a Jump Forward button
so I could go forward or backward by whatever interval I set, I'd also like
a high speed scrubbing option like you have in the Music app where a single
flick on the time counter will advance or go back by 10% of the current
track which I think is a great idea, but for the time being there are ways
to do this reasonably well as it is especially if you use the sleep timer
for listening in bed.

Sieghard

Hi

So far as I am concerned, the loss of the ff/rewind capability makes the app
barely usable. All very well having chapter navigation and the jump back,
but the book I was listening to has chapter lengths of almost two hours a
shot and, should I happen to nod off, I usually listen in bed, it's a
complete pain trying to get to where I was when I was last conscious.

Give them their due, Audible did phone me today to say they are working on
it. Goes to show it's a good idea for people to contact them.

BTW I contacted them via the contact details on their website, but I believe
you can also do it from the settings page in the app. I haven't checked if
that is another of the things that went with the update.

Best

Adrienne

The jump forward feature exists when you use the button-free mode by turning
off VO and doing a single finger swipe upward while listening to a book.

In this screen you can do a left swipe (or flick) to go backward and a right
swipe (or flick) to go forward. Doing a single tap anywhere on the screen will
start / pause the audio and doing a vertical (up or down) flick will set a
bookmark.

To exit this mode, you can turn VO back on and you will find a 'Close' button

  Hi Robin,

Yes, I agree, as far as I am concerned I see absolutely no improvements with
this Audible update except that they added an 8 minute sleep timer.

I really would like them to upgrade their sleep timer so you can set the time
simply as a custom time and also that there is a subtle warning 10 or 20
seconds before the timer runs out and an easy way to reset it if you are stil l
awak and hear the warning. The sleep timer app “iTired” does this beautifully,
but unfortunately you can’t use it with third-party apps, only the native music
app.

Another big thing I would like to see fixed is the fact that there is no
indication in the Chapters and Bookmarks area which chapter is currently
playing. If Voiceover said “Now Playinbg” or “Selected” or whatever when you
come across the chapter that is playing at the time it would make it much
easier to find your chapter and either double tap on the one before or the one
after.

I will write to Audible again with these suggestions and hope as many as
possible join me in this.

RE: Audible app update 2.1 has arrived

2013-03-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Cara and Robin,

I guess for those of us who don't necessarily read the user's guide these
hidden, non-Voiceover accessible features remain a mystery until somebody
points them out *smile*. Thanks, Cara, for doing so.

However, I agree with Robin that this should be accessible. I was just about
to post a message to you, Cara, telling you that you should upgrade your app
since in the new version there was no such thing as Button-Free mode. Then I
thought I better make sure so I called Audible support. At first the
technical support guy told me as well that he could not find it, but then he
put me on hold and told me that this was there. The way to get to it is to
turn Voiceover off, then do a one-finger swipe up from the bottom of the
screen just above the home key towards the top. This will enable button-free
mode and you can jump forward and back by doing a left to right swipe for
forward and a right to left swipe for back. A vertical swipe, either up or
down, will insert a bookmark.

I told him that I would like him to take my feedback which he did by asking
me for my Audible email so he could properly log the call and request, and I
then told him to document that this is completely not accessible with
Voiceover and that Voiceover users have no way to turn on Button-Free mode
or to use it with Voiceover.

The other big issue for me is the fact that in the Chapters and Bookmarks
area, the currently playing Chapter is visually highlighted, but Voiceover
gives no indication what chapter is currently playing.

I will also send another email about the Button-Free mode and the fact that
Voiceover should say selected or Currently Playing when you come to the
chapter which is currently playing.

As for Button-Free mode, I don't see why similar to how Apple solved the
Notification Center activation, Audible couldn't do this so that a 3-finger
swipe up would start button-free mode when Voiceover is on. Then maybe a
2-finger or 3-finger swipe left or right could be used for the Jump Forward
or Jump Back command just as a 3-finger swipe changes pages when you are on
the home screen.

Regards,

Sieghard

I must be missing something here. In the new Audible update I don't see a
Button Free Mode, I do remember it from the old version, but if I play a
book in the new Audible app and turn Voiceover off I can swipe up or down or
left or right as much as I want and nothing happens. Cara, could you tell me
how you get to this Button-Free mode?

Thanks,

Sieghard

The jump forward feature exists when you use the button-free mode by turning
off VO and doing a single finger swipe upward while listening to a book.

In this screen you can do a left swipe (or flick) to go backward and a right
swipe (or flick) to go forward. Doing a single tap anywhere on the screen
will start / pause the audio and doing a vertical (up or down) flick will
set a bookmark.

To exit this mode, you can turn VO back on and you will find a 'Close'
button in the top left corner of the screen. Double tapping this will bring
you back to the normal play view.

YOu can find out all about this, and more, in the user guide in 'Settings.'

Hi,
I am in total agreement with you about the chapter indication and have
mentioned that throughout my dialogs with them both by phone and email.
that glaring admission drives me mad.
I can’t imagine these changes would be difficult to implement though admittedly
I’m not a code writer. It’d be one thing if we never had such functionality
such as fast-forward and back buttons that respond to gestures and the like
before but to have had them and then lost them in the cases of some of these
features is maddening and I said as much to them.
Supposedly according to the response I got today such accessibility concerns
will be addressed in version 2.1 as for whether that is in fact true or not
time will tell I suppose. Oh me of little faith (smile).
and my apologies if I earlier erroneously referred to the current update by the
wrong version number it is in fact version 2.01 which was released.
Thank you for joining me in contacting them about these feature requests the
more the merrier I say and I, like you hope others will do likewise.

You can actually find out what chapter is playing by double tapping on the

I asked one of my employees to look at the Chapter and Bookmarks page. I was

was highlighted and I am pretty sure the app could be programmed so that
Voiceover would say something like Selected or Currently Playing before
it reads out the chapter and time. This would be a big improvement in my
view and I'll definitely write to Audible again tonight to emphasize this.

As far as a Jump Forward button is concerned, it does not exist. I am not
sure why they would talk about it, but it's definitely not there whether you
use Voiceover or not.

It is a crude work around, but one way you can tell what chapter you are
currently playing is to set a book mark, then select the book marks button
in the chapters and book marks, and go to that book mark. It will tell you
what chapter you are in.

And another feature I wish VoiceOver could access in the new audible app, (I
hope it is simply that I don't know how to access it), is a jump forward
button. I know it exists, for it talks about jump forward and back in the
settings, I just think VoiceOver isn't finding it.

Hi Robin,

Yes, I agree, as far as I am concerned I see absolutely no improvements with
this Audible update except that they added an 8 minute sleep timer.

I really would like them to upgrade their sleep timer so you can set the
time simply as a custom time and also that there is a subtle warning 10 or
20 seconds before the timer runs out and an easy way to reset it if you are
stil l awak and hear the warning. The sleep timer app iTired does this
beautifully, but unfortunately you can't use it with third-party apps, only
the native music app.

Another big thing I would like to see fixed is the fact that there is no
indication in the Chapters and Bookmarks area which chapter is currently
playing. If Voiceover said Now Playinbg or Selected or whatever when you
come across the chapter that is playing at the time it would make it much
easier to find your chapter and either double tap on the one before or the
one after.

I will write to Audible again with these suggestions and hope as many as
possible join me in this.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi,

the good news is there's an update. the bad news the two glaring
accessibility issues I noted personally in version 2.0 still remain that is
unless I'm just stuck on stupid and am missing something.

In version 2.1 I still can't get the 2 finger gesture to activate back
buttons. and I still can't fathom for the life of me why it is that the
time elapsed indicator allows you to change its value by swiping or flicking
upward and yet it returns to its original position when playback of a book
resumes.

Here's hoping in future such functionality will be restored.

Robin

Re: Audible app update 2.1 has arrived

2013-03-08 Thread Cara Quinn
The jump forward feature exists when you use the button-free mode by turning
off VO and doing a single finger swipe upward while listening to a book.

In this screen you can do a left swipe (or flick) to go backward and a right
swipe (or flick) to go forward. Doing a single tap anywhere on the screen will
start / pause the audio and doing a vertical (up or down) flick will set a
bookmark.

To exit this mode, you can turn VO back on and you will find a 'Close' button
in the top left corner of the screen. Double tapping this will bring you back
to the normal play view.

YOu can find out all about this, and more, in the user guide in 'Settings.'

HTH and have a lovely evening / weekend!…

Smiles,

Cara :)
