Who makes the Dexcom? Is that the name of the company? And is there a specific
model that I need to look at?

Thanks again.

Hi Linda,

Sudden drops are always going to be an issue for you but things you could look
in to would be the

Freestyle Libre Link
Which has a very accessible app for the iPhone,
And the sensor is approx. 1.25 inchs diameter and is attached to the back of
your arm while in use,

Usage time is approx. 14 days,
Possibly shorter if in the USA (not sure why).

They are a product of Abbott diabetes care which is a Uk company I believe.

I use these myself as a type 1 / insulin dependant diabetic.

There is also another product called dexcom

These are again a CGM device which can talk to your mobile phone via a usable
app on the phone.
The Dexcom also has a Bluetooth attachment which means unlike the libre link
you don’t have to scan the sensor to get the BG reading.

The Dexcom can talk directly to your phone / app via Bluetooth every I think
its 5 minutes and therefore gives you a more constant glucose reading.

Also both systems apps allow you to setup alert / alarms that if readings are
to low, they will not just tell you but can be made to send a message to
important other who can then carry out any assistance if required.

As for apps re food / glicemic index etc,

There are probably a lot but you would be best to check out what is available
in your country of residence,
I don’t’ think the app I have for new Zealand would be of any good to you in
your nation of origion

Hope this helps.

Good luck

Hi Everyone,

I an a non-insulin dependent diabetic. Recently diagnosed after having Covid.
My knowledge of tools to manage blood sugar is limited to talking glucometers.
My problem is this, my blood sugar drops so rapidly, by the time I realize
there is a problem, it is too late. Are there any apps that would work along
with a patch that could alert me to the fact my sugar is dropping rapidly? I am
afraid to work my dog outside alone for fear of having a severe hypoglycemia
attack.

Also, has anyone found an accessible app for determining the glycemic index of
various foods?

Thank you in advance,

Lynda

Hello linda,
The alarms Andy is referring to on the free style libre only work for someone
with enough sight to set them.
The version of the free style that will have alarms that someone like myself
who is totally blind has not been approved by the fda yet.
If you are totally blind and need the high and low alarms i suggest the dexcom
as its fully accessible and it also has the ability for someone else to recieve
notifications that you are high or low.

Hi linda,

Sounds like you need a CGM, continuous glucose monitor. This is a sensor that
attaches to your body, which comes with a reader that requires vision, but they
also have an iPhone app. The Freestyle libre CGM has an app that is
accessible. You can set high and low parameters which would trigger and
audible alarm when reached. There is also the Dexcom 6 which works pretty much
the same way. I can't vouch for the accessibility of the app for the Dexcom
but someone here might be able to.
