RE: Help with Voice Dream Writer

2021-04-03 Thread Christopher Chaltain
OK, thanks! I did listen to the Braillists podcast on UEB, and it sounded
pretty simple! I probably needed to pay more attention! They were probably also
stressing how similar UEB is rather than stressing the differences.

HI,
You are not alone.
The Transition to UEB from Hadley is very good, but here are some pointers.

I started with learning UEB in 2015, or maybe 2014 when I knew it would be the
default format after January of 2016.
It wasn’t until dealing with MBraile and their support of the UEB Hashtag, a
couple months ago that I finally got it into my brain the difference.

UEB calls dots 3,4,5,6 the Number Indicator. Because, in braille, a through j
doubles as 1 through 0 so you have to have something that indicates it isn’t a
letter but a number.

In print, that is no problem because numbers are already distinct.

So, the “number sign, or hanshtag” had to have a braille equivalent thanks
muchly to all the social media stuff. So, they adopted 4,5,6 then 1,4,5,6 as
the Hashtag/Number sign. If you were hash tagging a number, then it would be
4,5,6, then 1,4,5,6, then 3,4,5,6. Isn’t this fun?

In UEB, things like time, dates, etc., require a fresh number indicator after
punctuation. So to write 3:00 PM it would be dots 3,4,5,6, c, colon, then
the number indicator again dots 3,4,5,6, then j j, PM.

If I remember correctly, currency doesn’t need the extra number indicator for
the cents. So write the dollar sign, dot 4, s, number indicator and your
numbers, period cents.

I hope that helps,

Richard

Ah, OK, I see my problem. I was using 3,4,5,6 for the number sign. Even after
reading your email the first time, I was still typing in 4,5,6 followed by
3,4,5,6 and still not getting the number sign. Now that I’m typing 4,5,6
followed by 1,4,5,6 it’s working just as you explained below! I’m no expert on
UEB, but I’m surprised 3,4,5,6 isn’t the number sign.

OK, here’s another question. How do I type time in UEB? When I type 3,4,5,6

don’t get 12:00 but rather 12:jj. Maybe I need a pointer to some documentation

OK, I just tested with that setup.
The “number sign” or “Hashtag” is dots 4,5,6, then dots, 1,4,5,6.
Do that once, immediately followed by the words you want in your heading level
1 and hit a hard return.
Do that number sign twice then the heading words for a heading level 2, and so
on.
Make sure you get a hard return after the heading text.
Then, open the outline and set it to lowest level headings to confirm it worked.
Then, when you export it as rtf (which is what I recommend, the document will
have those marked up as headings.

I haven’t made a thorough recording on walking through all of that, but there

Should have also asked, are you using Apple Braille Screen input as well as if
you are using UEB.

Subject: Help with Voice Dream Writer

I'm playing around with Voice dream Writer, and I was wondering if there were
any tutorials or places to go for help with the app.

Right now I'm trying to use it with Braille Screen Input, and this is probably
more of a BSI question then a Writer question, but I can't figure out how to
insert a # (number sign) with BSI so I can mark something as a header in mark
down.
