Re: Not connecting to Wi-Fi, Help!

2013-03-12 Thread David Chittenden
Before resetting the network settings, go in to settings, wifi, to see if your
wifi router is even displayed. If so, double-tap on the information button
following the wifi source and double-tap forget device. After doing this, try
connecting to the router as a new device. If that doesn't work, reset network
settings and try again.

Hi David,

Is there a way to be notified if your Wi-Fi disconnects. When it
disconnected without me knowing it, I downloaded the Dream reader and then 2
large voices. I promptly got a text message from my provider trying to sell
me some extra on my data plan because it is at 90% used. If my Wi-Fi
doesn't disconnect on me without letting me know, I'll be OK because my
month ends in a few days anyway.

2013-03-12 Thread David Chittenden
The next step I would follow is to go to the router manufacturer's website and
download the latest firmware update for the router. Follow the instructions to
update the router firmware.

A few years ago, I had a similar problem with the house router. I learned that
device wifi types and codes are always updating, so routers, and device driver
firmware, really should be updated yearly or whenever new updates are
available. At that time, after I updated the home router and my laptop wifi
card drivers, I was then unable to connect to the work router, and the boss
refused to update the work router.

RE: Not connecting to Wi-Fi, Help!

2013-03-12 Thread ptrholdstock
Hi, if it happens again try this. Go in to wifi settings, then press on the
more detail button for your wifi network. Then go down to Renew Lease and
press that then restart the phone. If it happens again you may find it is an
issue to do with the last IOS updates as I and many people had the same
problem. Apple insist it doesn't exist but did resolve the issue eventually
with a phone replacement. They said it was my router but the new phone works
fine.

Before resetting the network settings, go in to settings, wifi, to see if your
wifi router is even displayed. If so, double-tap on the information button
following the wifi source and double-tap forget device. After doing this, try
connecting to the router as a new device. If that doesn't work, reset network
settings and try again.

It depends on the router and the manufacturer's website. If both are
accessible, plan on half an hour or so (if you are technically competent).
Otherwise, at least an hour and a pair of eyes may well be necessary.

RE: Not connecting to Wi-Fi, Help!

2013-03-12 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi David,

Before I got into all of that, I decided to call Bell Canada, my provider
and got a lady who seemed to be more awake than most. She was vary patient
in doing her work. She declared the problem to be Wi-Fi interference. I
live in a high rise apartment building and there are many installations in
my area of the building. She claimed that maybe a recent installation was
causing me some interference. She proceeded to change the channel that my
modem was using for Wi-Fi and it worked after a few tries. She explained to
me that hese modems can use one of several channels and what she did is
trial and error until she found a clear one.

Everything is working well now and I have been connected now for about 6
hours and no sign of problems yet.

The lady also told me not to play around with the modem because it belongs
to them and there could be heavy charges if I messed up anything in their
equipment. This is quite a complicated system as it is the Bell Fibe which
is fiber optics. When they installed it, their technician was here for 5
hours and they don't want me to change anything. Even my TV works off that
modem.

Thanks for the assistance.

Good, glad to hear it. I didn't consider wifi interference. That said, I have
seen wifi signal blocked by chordless phones and microwaves. Channels 1, 7, and

Hi Ron,

You can check your status bar to the left of the time. If it says 3G it is
on data, if it says something like 3 of 3 bars or 2 of 3 bars, WiFi signal
sstrength you are on WiFi.

Also keep in mind that you can't download anything over 50 Mb with data,
that is an Apple restriction. I am pretty sure the Voice Dreamreader voices
are more than 50 Mb although I am not sure about that.

Of course you can stream via 3G so if your WiFi disconnects and you don't
check and do a lot of streaming this could be a problem. However, many apps
like Downcast or Ootunes also have settings in the app where you can tell
the app to only stream on WiFi.

Regards,

Sieghard
