It may be better to try to find new or used Victor Reader Stream Model 2 units. 
The model 3 I purchased has been a disappointment.

 

The unit, even after recent software updates, does not keep the place in the 
book where I stopped reading. Bookmarks are often lost. The  version 3 will not 
yet read Audible books, although this is promised for a future update. The 
ability to move through lists of books in groups of ten is no longer possible. 
Finding the time requires a long press of the time key, instead of the short 
press previously used. (The developers considers this last item as a feature; I 
don’t.)

You would do well to consider putting out a shout for a second-generation VR 
Stream. Since the third generation has recently become available you might save 
some money by getting a gently used second generation Victor Reader/Stream.

No Lana, it does not.  However, just remember, that your new SD card in the 
third gen stream is in xfat format, while the SD card in a second gen stream 
must be formatted as fat32.  If someone wanted to use a large capacity SD card 
in both the second gen stream, or the third gen stream, they must first make 
sure their SD card is formatted as fat32.

thanks. So far I've kept separate cards in separate machines. I do a lot of

When you say you formatted the card, did you let the victor reader format it, or your computer. If you let the victor reader format it, then put these books into the $vrdtb folder and it won't work, then I don't know. I looked through the error messages in the victor reader user guide, but none of the error 3's in there seemed to apply. I have never used one of those type of MP3 players but is there anyway that it 
can be reset also have you tried powering it off and back on again I would try 
doing that with the card in it and with a card out of it and you can also try 
ejecting the card while the device is on and then putting it back in again 
maybe that will make it read it correctly

ALTHOUGH YOU HAVE YOUR ANSWER, HUMANWARE, I WANTED TO TELL YOU THAT THE THIRD 
VERSION OF THE STREAM SEEMS PRETTY WELL. I HAVEN’T HAD A TREK, SO CAN’T ATTEST 
TO THAT. I HAVE USED BLUETOOTH ON THE THIRD STREAM, AND IT WORKS WELL MOST OF 
THE TIME. WITH THE NEW UPDATE, IT HASN’T CRASHED YET.

I have really used and enjoyed two each of the first and second versions of the 
Victor Reader Stream, the last of which is still working well after several 
years.  When I changed hearing aids I had to get an newer version that supports 
Bluetooth .  I am now on my fourth Victor Reader Trek in just over a year.  I 
don’t know about other’s experience but all of mine have been disasters.  
Humanware has implied that I am the only one with problems but they have been 
replacing them under warranty.  In addition to forgetting settings and 
occasionally garbling the audio they frequently crash, sometime multiple times 
a day.  I get six to seven hours on a charge, much less than they advertise.
