Here is the USA url for Baum. http://www.baumusa.com/braille-solutions/ I think Maxiaids also caries them. Hi Andrew, Yes, I find mine to be sturdy. I use it out and about a lot. It is 16 cells, not 18 as I previously stated. It works well with i devices via bluetooth. I use mine with my iPhone and iPod. It also works well with windows, not sure whether it will work with the mack. Do a google search for the Seika Mini or visit: www.rnib.org.uk/shop and search for the Seika Mini. I know it works with Jaws, Window-eyes and NVDA. Hope this helps, Carla. Re: small portable braille display for the iphone
Hi, the Focus 14 and the Braille Pen 12 are going to be the smallest, but at the cost of more scrolling. If this isn't an issue for you, then these are great. As you move up the line, the Perkins Mini has 16 cells and even a text file and Braille file reader. Moving up from there and where I would personally start is the Braille Connect 18 from APH. This one has 18 cells and so even though there is a lot of scrolling, it's not nearly as much as with a 12, 14, or 16 cell display. After that I believe the next step up is the 32 cells displays. Good luck. -- Raul A. Gallegos Parallel lines have so much in common. Re: small portable braille display for the iphone
Hi, for what it's worth, I personally prefer the Focus 14 over the Braille Pen 12. There are more buttons on the Focus and it gives you more control over commands. Plus the Braille Pen in my opinion seems like it will fall apart with a gust of wind. The focus doesn't seem all that much more sturdy, but it at least has more features. smile. -- Raul A. Hi andrew. I use the Seika Mini braille display. Although it is a notetaker, it works well with the iPhone and is small enough, about the size of a paperback book. It is 18 cells. Hope this helps, Carla. Sent from my iPhone On 27 Mar 2014, at 02:07 AM, Andrew Head ath...@bigpond.net.au wrote: Hi all, I'm considering purchasing a small braille display for use with my iphone. what does this display coust? Betty Emmons - Original Message - From: Wayne Merritt wcmerr...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, March 27, 2014 1:27 PM Subject: Re: small portable braille display for the iphone Hmm, what can I say about the Focus 14 Blue that I've had for 6 weeks? Well, the question of why I didn't get one sooner comes to mind. Grin. Anyway, I love my Focus 14 Blue. Unlike other displays, it has a lot of controls and buttons that lets you control all aspects of using the display wirelessly with an iOS device. You can even use the selector button to answer/hang up calls and start and stop media, which I often do. At times I have wished for more Braille cells, but more cells means greater price, and this little unit is plenty big enough and very portable. My only complaints so far have been the standard case that comes with it, since the fasteners for the shoulder strap are on the top of the case, where the flap folds back underneath verses in the back. Also the sides are exposed to the elements. I have toyed with the idea of getting an Executive Products case for the Focus 14, but that's $50, so we'll have to see when the budget allows for it. I do have minor issues with the auto translation being on, which when you stop typing, whatever you have written is instantly translated. The downside is that if you are in the middle of writing a word or phrase and you hesitate, that is automatically tranlsated. Though that feature can be turned off, I find it very covenient to write in contractions and can live with the short comings. All in all, I love my Focus 14. I have and do use it to read files in Dropbox, read books in iBooks, play iAssociate 2 (aword associations game), go through tweets, and other things. If I don't want to bother others, I can mute the phone, mute the Voiceover speech and sounds, and then leave the phone in my pocket. If you are seriously considering getting a display, I would definitely encourage you to take some for test drives. Find a local dealer of the products or go to a blindness conference and look at some demo models on display. Don't buy sight unseen, so to speak. Yes, you could get a refund within 30 days after, but these devices cost too much to buy without looking at one. Think of it like a sighted person taking a car for a test drive before buying, rather than just pointing at one and saying, I'll take that one. I took someone's word on a display a number of years ago that vocational rehab got for me. I still got a lot of use out of it, but found there were some things that I didn't expect and didn't appreciate as much. Also, read the articles and posts on AppleVis. There's a lot of content out there that reviews and goes over the high and low points and features of these displays. One other thing: I realize that not all local/regional dealers do this, but the dealer I ordered mine from did not charge me shipping when they sent it from their office to me. This may not be big, but when the unit itself costs $1,295 every bit counts. Re: small portable braille display for the iphone
Focus 14 blue is a really small and good display. It works well with the iPhone! I do not have one, but I have used one in the past. Just wondering what other users recommend? I want something that has a decent number of cells for reading, but is still small enough to fit in a deep pocket. Will even accept a size display the size of the phone if need be. I was maybe thinking the focus 14 blue, or even an 18 cell display if those exist. I mean a display, not a note taker. I already have a 32 cell braille sense, but want something small I can carry in a pocket for if I'm out and don't have my braille sense with me, which whilst it doesn't happen offten, might still be a good thing to have if I want to be private or not disturb others with the talking phone say if I get a message while family members are watching tv. I only use headphones for music and I feel a braille display means I can still use the phone, but be private and quiet, and still be social with those around me when out, where as I feel earphones cut me off from those around me and I look more anti social. Just considering at this point, no real decisions made, but I'd enjoy hearing others thoughts. Re: small portable braille display for the iphone
The German company Baum makes a series of displays called Vario. They come in various sizes but they're very compact. You'll get more info at their www.baum.de. Re: small portable braille display for the iphone
Hi, I wanted to see what this braille display had to offer, but the web site is in German. Do you have a web site that will explain the braille displays in English? Thanks.
