RE: the 16 or the 64G?
I got the 16GB 6 Plus. I really meant to pre-order the 64GB, but it wasn't available when I was ordering on the first day, so I told myself the 16GB would be okay. And, in my case, maybe it indeed will be. I do have the KNFB Reader on my phone, and I don't store documents or books and things of that nature. Also, with the 16GB, those free apps such as Pages were indeed not installed, although I guess I could get them if I wanted. When I checked my 16GB iPhone 4S running iOS 8.0.2, it showed the capacity as being 12.7GB, and the amount available as 10.0GB. Then, when I setup my iPhone 6 Plus 16GB by restoring from an encrypted iTunes backup after updating it to iOS 8.0.2, that phone showed the capacity as 11.8GB and the amount available as being 9.2GB. There was a difference of 2.7GB used on my 4S, as opposed to 2.6 on my 6 Plus, but I'm guessing that the plus usage will increase up to 2.7 or more once I start using the apps on my phone. But, even if an over the air iOS update takes between 5 and 6GB to install, I might just be okay, or of course could always use iTunes where less space would be needed. - Original Message - From: kliphskor...@icloud.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Date sent: Sat, 27 Sep 2014 06:22:31 -0500 Subject: RE: the 16 or the 64G? OK, so I guess that just means you pay for the phone in one year with additional payments instead of having a regular 2-year contract without additional payments after which time the phone is also yours. The way it worked for me who had 6 months before I was eligible for an upgrade was, my bill will have an additional approximately $30 for 18 months. After that, the phone is mine, and I am not under contract. There was no initial payment or activation fee. I won't like the bigger bill, but I can pay off early if I want to. This doesn't make sense as there is no interest on the payments. Lois By the way, I got a Best Buy gift card of $225 that I couldn't use to pay for the phone, but I have no doubt I will find something to buy there, maybe an Apple TV. As for that Sprint iPhone for Life thing, not sure if you can just keep going with it for 20 or 25 or whatever the 64 gig is per month, or if you have to then pay the rest off or turn it in at that point. - Original Message - From: Lois Butterfield lbutterfield...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, September 28, 2014 2:14 PM Subject: Re: the 16 or the 64G? Lowis and Gale if you do the math you are paying a lot more for the phone than if you wait till your contract is up. Remember companies are in it for the money. Had I gone to the ATT store, I could have put the $225 toward my bill. With phones in such short supply, I chose to get it there and then. I'm certainly not saying it is a great deal, but I don't think I'm paying a whole lot more than I would have otherwise, and waiting wasn't an option for me. I'm very pleased with what I have. RE: the 16 or the 64G?
Since I didn't see a copyright notice at the bottom of the page, here is the ATT next FAQ information from their website; and, best I can tell, one does pay more with the Next plan than with a two-year contract, but then one has more freedom with the Next plan or with buying the phone outright. Taken from: www.att.com/shop/wireless/next.html Expand All What is ATT Next? ATT Next offers you the opportunity to get a new smartphone every year or every 18 months. You have the choice to pay for your smartphone over 20 or 24 monthly installments. After 12 monthly installment payments (under 20-month plan) or 18 monthly installment payments (under 24-month plan), you may trade your smartphone in to upgrade to a new smartphone, or choose to keep it and make the remaining monthly installment payments. With ATT Next, tax is due at the time of sale, but there are no down payment, activation, upgrade, or financing fees required. Who is eligible for ATT Next? ATT Next is available for current customers who are eligible for an upgrade and whose accounts are in good standing, or for new customers with qualifying credit. With respect to business customers and their Corporate Responsibility Users, a qualified small business agreement (for example, an ATT Mobile Business Agreement) is also required. Are there additional charges? Sales tax is charged on your new smartphone at the time of sale. There's no down payment and no activation or upgrade fee. Is a contract required with ATT Next? ATT Next requires that you sign an installment agreement to pay for the smartphone over 20 or 24 monthly payments. If you cancel your wireless service, the remaining unpaid balance on the smartphone is due. Also, a Wireless Customer Agreement for your wireless service or qualified small business agreement (voice and data) is required. How many installment plans can I have on my account? There's a limit of four per Consumer and Individual Responsibility account, and 10 per small business account. This includes ATT Next installment agreements and tablet installment agreements. What devices are eligible for ATT Next? You can choose from a huge selection of the latest and most popular smartphones! Do I own the smartphone? Or is this a leasing offer? The smartphone is yours, and you're responsible for 20 or 24 monthly installment payments. You're also responsible for any loss, theft, or damage to the smartphone - both during the installment agreement period and afterward. We recommend you purchase the optional Mobile Insurance to protect your investment. How do I get a new smartphone every year with the program? After you have made 12 installment payments under a 20-month plan, or 18 installment payments under a 24-month plan, if your wireless account is in good standing, you can trade in your current smartphone to upgrade to a new one. All trade-ins must be fully functional, in good physical condition, and have the activation lock disabled. Select a new smartphone under a qualifying offer, which may include a new ATT Next installment agreement. How do I get a new tablet with the program? If you purchased a tablet with an ATT Next installment plan (prior to Nov. 20, 2013), you can trade in the tablet for a new tablet after you have made 12 installment payments, but before you have made 20 installment payments, if your wireless account is in good standing. The tablet must be fully functional and in good physical condition. Your new tablet can be purchased with a new installment plan or any other currently available offers. Tablets purchased on or after Nov. 20, 2013, are not eligible for ATT Next trade-ins. When I trade in my smartphone after 12 or 18 months and get a new one, what's the length of my new installment plan? When you trade in your smartphone, no further installments are billed for the smartphone you traded in. You can start over with a new ATT Next installment plan on a new smartphone. Currently available installment plans are 20 and 24 months long. Will I be able to pay off this smartphone early? Yes, you have the option to pay off your installment agreement, but the full outstanding balance will be due immediately. What payments are due if I cancel ATT Next? With ATT Next, you can pay off your installment payments in full at any time. If you want to cancel your wirless service with ATT, the full outstanding balance on your installment agreement becomes due -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. That's what I figured with Sprint too, except if you went easy pay versus contract, the service plan is higher as well, so maybe with them, easy pay or iPhone for Life is a better deal. - Original Message - From: Brandon A. RE: the 16 or the 64G?
As somebody pointed out, most companies are trying to get the last buck out of you they can. If you really do the math something like ATT Next wil definitely cost you more money. You are basically leasing the phone and a lease will always be more expensive than buying something outright. I understand how people who opt for this choice are probably justifying it by saying It might be a bit more, but not so much and :I have more options, but I think part of it is that companies make it pretty confusing so most people don't bother sitting down and really crunching the numbers. It just sounds good and it's like Oh well, what's another $30 a month if I don't have to make a $200 downpayment. The fact is that ATT or whichever other company still basically owns your phone for the duration and has you by the short hairs. Unfortunately, in the US you can't even buy an iPhone from the Apple Store outright and unlocked on launch day as you can here in Canada, most European countries and Australia, New Zealand and so on. I guess the large carriers have too big of a lobby to allow that. I am with an MVNO owned by Telus which is one of the large carriers in Canada. I get fantastic coverage throughout the country and pay $50 Canadian a months. Of course I did pay about $1,000 for my iPhone 5S 64 Gb last year, but any other carrier where subsidies are offered would charge me about $30 a months more. That means over even just a one year period I would pay about $360 more, then if I add the $429 or whatever the Canadian price is for getting a 64 Gb phone on contract I am already at $800. I could probably get between $400 and $500 if I sold my unlocked 5S 64 Gb now so even if I did want to buy an iPhone 6 I would probably be better off by $200 to $300. We've done the math, and next is saving us about 300 per year. We are definitely saving over buying it outright, or putting down. Alia On Sep 28, 2014, at 5:27 PM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: As somebody pointed out, most companies are trying to get the last buck out of you they can. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: the 16 or the 64G?
Hi, One thing that nobody has mentioned so far is that in the UK at least, the price for the 64GB 6 is the same as the 32GB 5S when it was released. I was a bit annoyed about having to go for the 64GB 6 at first, but when I found out that its price was inline with the previous 32GB price it didn't seem as bad. Personally I'd rather Apple introduced a cheaper 32GB model instead of simply dropping that capacity, but with the 6 pricing, your actually getting more storage for your money than you were before. I think its an overall trend with smartphones. There are lots of success Androy phone model, no longer give you te option of 32gb. They either give you the 16gb or 64gb (discount Samsung). As far as why it is the case, i'm not sure. I thought it will make more sense for apple to have 32gb, 64gb and 128gb. But who knows what behind the brain of it. Maybe, we Apple might want to retain the 32gb soully for iPads. Haven't seen alot of 128gb around the place. the most comment droy phones will be either the 8gb or 16gb internal, with sd card enable up to 64gb or such. Only you know if the price increase and thereby storage increase is worth it. Personally, I have a 16GB phone that currently has 4GB free, but no music or movies on it, and I don't use audio books. If apple don't have 32GB, you don't need it. That is apples descision for you. Memory is cheap, but apple makes us pay to be a part of the ecosystem. Hi Pam, The KNFB Reader does not store things on your phone unless you actually safe a document. But it is easy to export the documents to Dropbox and in any case, it would take an aweful lot of documents to make a difference even on a 16 Gb phone.
