Re: news apps

2018-09-29 Thread Gordon
I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but I use an app called
breaking news. It's the first option that comes up when doing a search
for breaking news. this app is awesome for following news and getting
alerts for specific sources that you choose. I've been using it for a
couple of years now. I found it when NBC shut down their breaking news
twitter feed and app back in 2016.

To add a new publication, you first flick across the top of the screen past the
edit button until you reach the add or plus sign button. Double tap the add
button and a new screen pops up with many categories including news,
technology, entertainment, etc. Doubke tap the category you wish and a new
screen pops up listing all the publications in this category. Select the
publication you wish and then tap the save button on the upper right. The
publication is now in your feed list. Regards, Michelle

You can always look at Feeddler Pro as an alternative too.

This is my prefered RRS reading app.

I use it in conjunction with The Old reader to have synchronization across iOS
and my PC, but The Old Reader isn’t necessary.

Feeddler is completely VO accessible as well.

You will have a list of topics, and you will have a search. Either double tap
the search to search for a particular feed, or double tap on a topic to get a
list of feeds for that particular topic.

Once you have the feed you want to add, just double tap on it, and it will take
you to the final screen to add that feed. On that screen, you will have your
list of current folders, an add folder button to create a new folder if you
want, and a save button.

First create the folder you want or double tap on the folder you want to add
the feed too. Once you have chosen the folder, then just double tap the save
button to finalize everything and have that feed added.

Now for a feed that has already been added but is not in a folder, I have not
found out a way to move it to a folder. The only way I know, is to delete the
current feed, then readd it to the folder you want by following the steps
listed above.

A quick way of deleting a feed is by using the action choice on your rotor. So
when you are on a feed, just flick up or down with one finger, and delete is
one of the choices.

Hope this has been helpful,

Chris

If you reside in the United States, you may want to consider the NFB Newsline
app from the National Federation for the Blind. You need to complete an
application for this free news service and have your visual impairment verified
by your local talking book library. NFB Newsline affords you access to
hundreds of newspapers, quite a few magazines, local television listings and
several breaking news reporting services.

I also regularly use the apps from National Public Radio. I personally don't
find the native News App that helpful, but others may recommend that app.

Re: news apps

2016-05-21 Thread Mary Otten
OK, Chris. I was trying to get my husband to start using this app, since he is
so unhappy with Flipboard. So he started out having no feet. And when he went
to add a feed he didn't get that screen where you could add it to a folder or
create a new folder in which to add it. And I thought I had gone through that
process and also not seen that. But I guess I will have to try it again. It was
frustrating, because I was telling him how great The app is, and then he
couldn't get it to make folders or see where you could make folders and then
neither could I when I tried it. Thank you.

Re: news apps

2016-05-21 Thread Chris Chaffin
Hello Mary,

>From the main screen, you will have an add button. Just double tap that to go
>to the add feed screen.

Chris

Re: news apps

2016-05-21 Thread Michelle Bernstein
If you reside in the United States, you may want to consider the NFB
Newsline app from the National Federation for the Blind. You need to
complete an application for this free news service and have your visual
impairment verified by your local talking book library. NFB Newsline
affords you access to hundreds of newspapers, quite a few magazines, local
television listings and several breaking news reporting services.
I also regularly use the apps from National Public Radio. I personally
don't find the native News App that helpful, but others may recommend that
app.

RE: news apps

2016-05-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
For Canada CBC News is probably one of the best despite a few inconveniences.
The app is very accessible except that once you start reading an article you
have to let Voiceover read it from start to finish and hope you won't be
interrupted by a push notification, phone call or text message since anything
that briefly takes over will make you loose your spot and you have to start
reading the article again from the beginning.

Re: Questions about the Huffington Post app, was, Re: News apps.

2012-06-24 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Kimber,
Are you using huff post on an iPad or iPhone/iPod? And are you seeing these
buttons that are not labeled when you first open the app, prior to selecting an
edition? I don't recall seeing unlabeled buttons when I first started using
this app. But now when I open the app, I certainly am not seeing any. I get At
the top left, it says The Huffington Post, and top right is a button that says
editions. Across the bottom are 5 tabs, front page, sections, search, favorites
and settings. Front page is selected by default, and stories are in a list. You
can flick or scroll through stories. The only thing I remember changing in the
settings was that I turned off landscape mode. Also in settings, there is one
for autohide nav bar, which is off, but I don't think I changed that. Perhaps
this nav bar is what is causing your problem?

I have not experienced the problem scrolling, although generally in an article,
I use the two finger flick down and read continuously once I find the start of
the article. That is often on the second page, as there may be images or other
unwanted stuff on the first page of an article. Also, occasionally, you will
run in to a slide show, and those don't work well. But regular articles, the
vast majority of items that I've run across, are completely accessible here on
my iPhone 4S. Once an article is open, across the top, I get the back button,
the section from which the article was taken, e.g. politics, then a left and a
right button. I don't know what those buttons do. Then there is the text, and
after that, another row of buttons, iPhone share, which brings up a screen full
of options that let you do things like tweet, email, facebook etc, the article
you're reading. After the iPhone share from left to right are comment, star,
text zoom in and text zoom out. I assume the star is some sort of favorites
thing, although I have not used it. The share feature is really handy. Then on
the very bottom left corner I get a number, such as 9,379 image. Again, not
sure what that is, but it has never interfered with my ability to read articles
by two finger flicking down once I've found the start of text which is
generally on the second screen of an article.

Re: Questions about the Huffington Post app, was, Re: News apps.

2012-06-24 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hi Mary,

I think it was landscape that was the problem. Once I changed that all
is working beautifully.

I asked my sighted husband about the right and left buttons and he
said they are arrows pointing right andleft probably for use with the
landscape orientation, so now I just ignore them.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

2012-06-24 Thread Tara Prakash
I never needed to move from one page to another. I just use two finger swipe
and it reads the entire article.
The tow buttons are for moving to other articles. The right button takes you
to the next article and left to the previous article. You may just use back
button to go back to the main list and choose the article based on the
headline. Using left and right button takes you to the full contents of the
article.

Hi Mary and All,

I just downlloaded the HuffPo app and I have a couple of questions.

There are a couple of buttons at the upper right of the screen that
just say left button and right button. What are these buttons?

Also, I don't seem to be able to move from page to page within an
article with any consistency. There are buttons at the bottom of the
screen for text zoom in and zoom out. I think zooming out let''s me

My favorite news source is the N F B Newsline Mobile app. Here is a link:
  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nfb-newsline-mobile/id530470425?mt=8

This app is 100% accessible and allows access to hundreds of daily newspapers
and magazines.
You can read online or subscribe to particular periodicals and download them
to your phone.

Of course you need to be a Newsline member, but it is all free

Hello all,

I have the USA Today app on my iPhone 4S and it works well. However, when I
downloaded it on my iPad 3 it's not VO accessible which I thought was funny
since it works well on my iPhone. I wonder if I tried to get the iPhone
version instead of the iPad version if that would make a difference? Has
anyone experienced an app that worked fine on one iDevice and not the other?
I'd be interested in knowing your experiences.

Many thanks!

Hi Katey ,

Yes, there are some apps that work well with voice over on the iPhone but
not on the iPad. One that comes to mind is Slingplayer Mobile.

Try putting the iPhone version of USA Today on your iPad via iTunes.
Remember there is a button in the lower right to go to full screen mode.

Good luck,
Chuck

Questions about the Huffington Post app, was, Re: News apps.

2012-06-23 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hi Mary and All,

I just downlloaded the HuffPo app and I have a couple of questions.

There are a couple of buttons at the upper right of the screen that
just say left button and right button. What are these buttons?

Also, I don't seem to be able to move from page to page within an
article with any consistency. There are buttons at the bottom of the
screen for text zoom in and zoom out. I think zooming out let''s me
move from page to page, but sometimes this button is dimmed and the
page won't move.

Any tips for using this app will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Kimber
