RE: Problem Running Braille Display with iOS 8.2

2015-04-08 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Well, I would agree fully if it was true for all displays, but that's not the
case. Right now the worst ones to use to write on are the Humanware ones. I
also don't have the best experience with the HIMS Braille Edge, but at least it
takes it a while longer before it gets weird. Right now the Focus Blue from
Freedom Scientific seems to handle things the best. At least the ones I have
access to, it's the best so far. No delays, and it just works all around. I
only wish I could reverse the panning buttons on the front, but that's more of
a Freedom Scientific thing I suspect.

Yes, writing braille on a PC is a much better experience, kind of like
the experience you used to get with Mobile Speak in the old days. Too
bad Apple, or Google for that matter, couldn't get that implimented.
Honestly, if Android had better support for braille, I'd give it a
serious look.

2015-04-08 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Raul, I agree the Focus displays are working beautifully in iOS.
reverse panning is a feature of the screen reader's UI. For example, JAWS
offers it in Braille Settings, but iOS does not.
I guess it could be offered in the firmware potentially, but then you get into
a situation where if it can be adjusted in both places, it can be quite
difficult to troubleshoot.

Hi all.
Yes, I have also noticed this with the Apex. However, it also seems to
be occuring with the Refreshabraille and other displays from time to
time, though not as frequently as it is happening with HW's stuff. I
suspect it's a conflict between the braille Appple driver and several
displays, for whatever reason, it is impacting HW more than the
others.
As for the question about the VarioUltra, it is a fairly stable
connection relative to the other displays, but still locks up from
time to time. However, the battery life, at least on the 20-cell
model, is not what you get out of most displays. For example, with a
day worth of average use by me, I get 2 days of use out of the
Refreshabraille and about 3/4 of a day out of the VarioUltra. IN the
middle, unless you're talking about prices, the u2 Mini I was able to
get through a full day with some battery life. I have not played with
the Focus enough to really comment on battery life. However, what I
can say about the Focus is that, the 14 in particular, is very
fragile. Of all the displays and people I've worked with, it has gone
back for repair more than any other.
The eight-dot full cell at the beginning and end of the display is not
a display specific thing, it's the way VoiceOver has been instructed
to do things in iOS 8 and later. I guess the folks at Apple put this
feature in there to address the issue people were complaining about
where they could not track their braille typing before it was fed
through the translator. However, even when you set both input and
output of braille to uncontracted, the stupid full cell is still
there.
This is a huge concern for people like myself who rely on others to
type with bluetooth keyboards in very loud situations to communicate
with people around me. The full cell even appears when a bluetooth
keyboard user is typing. It really slows down the communication
process.

An interesting response. My understanding is Apple posts its braille display

Considering how HumanWare has had problems in the past with buggy code and

Automatic braille translation doesn't conflict with BARD if you switch
braille input to 8-dot while you're using the app. This is a good idea
anyway, since then each letter you type is seen as a letter rather
 than
a word. The only problem is that Quick Nav is on by default, and in
 iOS
8.2, you need a Bluetooth keyboard to turn off Quick Nav.

 Anna

Another option is to turn off automatic braille translation. Then
 text
is translated automatically a couple of seconds after you type it,
regardless of whether you've pressed Space or dots 4-5-chord. The
 only
problem with that is that if you stop in the middle of a word to

back-translated, which can cause problems. For that reason, I leave
 automatic braille translation turned off.

Another option is to turn off automatic braille translation. Then

Hi,

My question is this problem also seen on the Braille Note, since it's a

not frozen on me recently, but I'll take more notice from now on. Thanks for

An interesting response. My understanding is Apple posts its braille display

Considering how HumanWare has had problems in the past with buggy code and
incompatible driver stack issues, I again will place the responsibility in

this is also happening on Yosemite now also.

It sounds to me as you could use the vertical navigation, to go to the right

This is a command that I use a lot.

2015-04-06 Thread Scott Davert
Hi Paul.
Oh yes, I've had this issue, and it's a major one for me. In fact, I'm
in the process of writing an article about this. I suspect, but can't
confirm, that this feature was designed to allow a person to
immediately see what they have typed, before it goes to the
translator. Which is fine, I guess, if you're not confident in your
braille typing, but it would be nice if this feature could be turned
off so that it would go back to the old way of braille keyboard input.

Hi Scott,

If you turn on automatic braille translation, braille input will be just like
before. Otherwise, press Space or Space with dots 4-5 to make the current word
translate.

 Hi,

The problem is that Quick Nav is on by default. That causes this problem.
You need to turn Quick Nav off. in iOS 8.2, the only way to do that is to
press the left and right arrow keys together on a Bluetooth keyboard.
Fortunately, in iOS 8.3, you’ll also be able to do it by pressing Space with
 Q on a braille display.

Hi Anna.
Unfortunatley, this does not always solve the probem, as turning
automatic braille translation on was the first thing I did when
installing 8. Especially when someone is typing on a bluetooth
keyboard, the 8-dot full cell appears at each end of the display
instead of tracking the text like it used to. Also, as others have
reported, input is rather sluggish, particularly on devices older than
the iPhone 6/6+. Also, the full cell still presents itself when in
uncontracted 6-dot or 8-dot computer braille. What's even worse is
this is also happening on Yosemite now also.

Thanks!

Re: Problem Running Braille Display with iOS 8.2

2015-04-05 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

Automatic braille translation doesn’t conflict with BARD if you switch braille
input to 8-dot while you’re using the app. This is a good idea anyway, since
then each letter you type is seen as a letter rather than a word. The only
problem is that Quick Nav is on by default, and in iOS 8.2, you need a
Bluetooth keyboard to turn off Quick Nav.

HTH,
Anna

But automatic Braille translation messes with the BARD navigation keys,
especially when reading a .brf file, as it thinks you're trying to write a
word. Is there anyway around this? I want my navigation commands back. :-)

 Hi Alan,

It sounds like your friend has automatic braille translation turned off.
When she starts typing a word, it goes into a buffer, as indicated by the
full braille cells at either end of the display. When she presses Space or
dots 4-5-chord, the word will be entered into the text, and the full braille
 cells will disappear.

Another option is to turn off automatic braille translation. Then text is
translated automatically a couple of seconds after you type it, regardless
of whether you’ve pressed Space or dots 4-5-chord. The only problem with
that is that if you stop in the middle of a word to think about something,
the part that you’ve already typed gets back-translated, which can cause
problems. For that reason, I leave automatic braille translation turned off.

 HTH,
 Anna

I have another question for my friend running iOS 8.2 on an iPhone 6. Are
there new commands to operate a braille display when running iOS8.2? Hers
locks up as soon as she begins to enter text, showing a full cell at either
 end of the braille display.

 Thanks in advance.
