If using the Apple bluetooth keyboard, is it not possible to tab among the
address, subject, and message fields?

Lisa, thanks for this. I thought I could trick Apple. What an absurd thing
to try to do. I thought I could simply fill in the subject field first and
go back to the address field and fill it in. Well that worked, or so I
thought, But when I got back to the subject, I could not go any further. The
message field would not appear. I had to click once inside the subject field
and then get out of that field and then the message field appeared. How
strange. I am using the Apple blue tooth keyboard if that makes a
difference.

Bottom line, it works, but the question is, would there be an easier way?

Thanks.

Neal

Ah, Neil, I encountered this phenomenon for the first time this morning. I
had to remove everything from the to field, then edit the subject field,
come back and reenter the to address and it worked. before that, I kept
double-checking to be sure that yes, I was indeed editing the subject field,
but the subject kept showing up next to the text in the to field for some
reason.

I've sent several Emails on my phone and this was a new occurrence, so not
sure what's going on. At least there's a relatively low-tech solution.

Hi all, I am definitely missing something basic here. When I send an
email,
I can find the address field and enter the address. I then find the
subject
field and double tap to enter text. However, when I enter it, it is placed
at the end of the email address in the address, field. I remember having
this problem when I used my iTouch, so it's definitely Neal and not the
iPhone. What M I doing wrong?

Thanks.

difficulty centred around using a keyboard, but navigating on the screen;
and herein lay the issue. Arrow keys to the fields and activate them with

After double-tapping in the subject field, left flick away from the field, then
right flick into the field. If VO says editing after the name of the field, you
have opened the field to edit. If just the field name is announced, you have
not opened the field to editing.

Re: Problems filling in the subject in email messages

2013-03-22 Thread David Chittenden
Ok, now I understand what is going on.

iOS devices have always been designed for direct input from the touch-screen.
Keyboard access was added later. When a field is activated directly on the
screen, it always activates editing properly. When a field is activated using a
Bluetooth keyboard, it occasionally does not activate.

This occasional problem with opening fields for editing using a Bluetooth
device also occurs with Braille displays.

The solution is quite simple. Do as sighted people, even those who use a
physical keyboard do, activate edit fields on the touch-screen directly. In
other words, work with your device rather than against it.

RE: Problems filling in the subject in email messages

2013-03-22 Thread Neal Ewers
Hi, I think the problem here is using the Apple external keyboard. This is
not the first time I have had this problem in password fields and other such
fields. Sometimes I actually have to turn off the keyboard to get into the
field. In this particular task, I can get into the address field OK, but
when I follow your instructions about flicking left when entering the
subject field, That does not work with the keyboard. If I try to use my
finger on the phone, that doesn't work when I have the keyboard turned on.
I'll do some more playing around to see if I can come up with a work around.
I believe what I did before to make this work with the external keyboard was
to put something in the subject field, go back to the address field and
enter the address, and then go back and edit and fill out the subject field.
This is not consistent, so I need to do a bit more playing to see if I can
get this to work.

Neal

RE: Problems filling in the subject in email messages

2013-03-22 Thread Neal Ewers
David, I normally do what you suggest and have often been able to work
around tasks this way. The email subject field, however, seems to be a
different animal. If I fill in the address field, I then can tap on the
screen to open the subject field,. However, I'm not really in the subject
field. I am in the address field. Even when I try using my finger to swipe
left and back to the field again as was suggested earlier, I still end up in
the address field.

I'm not going to spend too much more list time on this. I'll just chalk it
up to a keyboard oddity.

Thanks for people's help.

Neal

Ok, now I understand what is going on.

iOS devices have always been designed for direct input from the
touch-screen. Keyboard access was added later. When a field is activated
directly on the screen, it always activates editing properly. When a field
is activated using a Bluetooth keyboard, it occasionally does not activate.

2013-03-22 Thread David Chittenden
I stopped having any problems entering fields when I returned to doing all my
navigation directly on the screen. I keep my Braille keyboard connected for
typing when at home. I have no problems accessing edit fields.

when you find consistently reproducible steps, send an email to
accessibil...@apple.com fully detailing how to reproduce the problem so they
can add it to things which should be considered for fixing. The more reports
they get from different people, the higher the importance. That said, sighted
people usually do not use the keyboard for navigation, either on an iOS device,
or a computer. Considering that blind people are only 0.6% of the market, and
we have full access the same way sighted people have access, it is incumbent on
us to adjust ourselves to become competent with using the touch-screen
directly. The fact is, touch-screen interfaces are now less expensive than
control panels with screens and separate buttons. This is the future.

It is similar to DOS and the keyboard to Windows and the mouse. Sighted people
use the mouse to move the pointer to each edit field. They then click the mouse
button. Next, they move the mouse hand to the keyboard and type. When finished
typing, they reach back to the mouse to move the pointer to the next field or
the OK button. Many Windows programs do not have the built-in facilities to
understand commands like tab and arrow keys for changing fields. These programs
are inaccessible to the blind, and are in the majority of programs. It does not
matter how much people say that doing things directly from the keyboard can be
faster. Sighted people are much more comfortable with direct visual influence.
Using a mouse pointer provides this. Using a touch-screen provides it even more.

It does not matter how much a blind person complains that this is unfair.
Again, we are a tiny portion of the market in a visual world. It will always be
incumbent on us to adjust.
