I'll have to continue to use my specialized players to read the protected
daisy books from open library.

Also from the Open Library web page, Frequently Asked Questions:
There are two types of DAISYs on Open Library: open and protected. All of
open DAISYs are also available in PDF, TXT, and ePub format. Anyone can
access the open DAISYs by searching Open Library and checking the Only show
eBooks

checkbox.

Players which support DAISY 3 text-only books should play the open books
available

from the Internet Archive.

Currently, our protected DAISY books can only be opened using a key issued
by the

Library of Congress NLS program.

Since Voice Dream Reader can read DAISY 3, PDF, text and ePub, the ones
that are not protected should work fine.

No, from reading the following readme file that comes with these books, I
have a feeling that this won't be possible:
This DAISY book is encrypted with a key from the National Library
Service, and may be read on appropriate reading devices with the key
installed.

This DAISY book is encrypted with a key from the National Library

RE: Voice Dream Reader 3 update, What's New

2014-03-16 Thread Richard Turner
Also from the Open Library web page, Frequently Asked Questions:
There are two types of DAISYs on Open Library: open and protected. All of open
DAISYs are also available in PDF, TXT, and ePub format. Anyone can
access the open DAISYs by searching Open Library and checking the Only show
eBooks
checkbox.

Players which support DAISY 3 text-only books should play the open books
available
from the Internet Archive.

Currently, our protected DAISY books can only be opened using a key issued by
the
Library of Congress NLS program.

Since Voice Dream Reader can read DAISY 3, PDF, text and ePub, the ones that
are not protected should work fine.

No, from reading the following readme file that comes with these books, I
have a feeling that this won't be possible:
This DAISY book is encrypted with a key from the National Library
Service, and may be read on appropriate reading devices with the key
installed.

RE: Voice Dream Reader 3 update, What's New

2014-03-15 Thread Richard Turner
I see what confused you. It will display image files for those who can see
them, like image PDF files. But, it does not do OCR on them.
Some PDF files have both images and text, in that case, he can extract the text
and display just it for those of us who have to depend on a screen reader; but
for those with sight, they can see the images and the text just like they were
reading it in Adobe on a computer.

I hope that makes sense.

RE: Voice Dream Reader 3 update, What's New

2014-03-15 Thread Richard Turner
If you have not heard the story behind Voice Dream Reader, I'll post a direct
link to an NPR story from last year. He wrote it for himself to teach himself
how to program for iOS. It wasn't until after it started selling and he
learned how useful it would be to folks who couldn't read print, that he began
the improvements for VoiceOver users. And that was only a small piece of the
year he and his family took off.

Check out the story at:

FYI, the release notes say that full support for all versions of Daisy is
included. Someone asked a while ago about reading Daisy3 books, and I presume
they are now supported. Braille display improvements were also cited, so
hopefully that bug where a few lines of braille are repeated is no more. I'll
test this later with a braille display to see.
