Re: With VoiceOver enabled, Can anyone locate the Speech Screen controller in iOS 17.2?

2023-12-28 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
Ah, thank you for clarifying that, Mark! In Apple Books, I can set to
continuous scrolling rather than page-turning to avoid such problems but most
of my Kindle books were not apparently typeset to allow this.
Thanks

Siri does have a new command
“read this to me”. But as far as I can tell this only works on Web pages that
can use reader mode.
I actually dumped my NYTimes app so that I could use this feature.

RE: With VoiceOver enabled, Can anyone locate the Speech Screen controller in iOS 17.2?

2023-12-28 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Harry,

Yes, if I manually lock the screen during Speech Screen playback, on a Kindle
title, speech will stop at the end of the current page.

However, when reading text from the web or other various text, locking the
screen does not cause playback to stop.

When it's all said and done, Speech Screen behaves differently depending upon
what is being read.

Mark

Mark, thank you very much for the details. Your instructions work perfectly,
except that you do not refer to having the screen locked after starting the
Speak Screen process. Yes, if the screen remains unlocked, the speak. Screen
turns pages and carries on talking. But if after starting the speak screen
feature, I lock the screen, the Speak Screen voice simply stops at the end of
current page and does not restart and does not turn the page over. Is that your
experience too? Thanks

2023-12-28 Thread Richard Turner
I went back and tried Mark's steps. With VoiceOver on, that speaking controller
is very inconsistent at best. And, I never could get it to work with Kindle.
However, just using VoiceOver, and getting to where I wanted to start reading,
and swiping down with two fingers VO read just fine and flipped the pages. Yes,
there is a pause as the page turns, but it works.

RE: With VoiceOver enabled, Can anyone locate the Speech Screen controller in iOS 17.2?

2023-12-28 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Harry,

First, in order to have the Speech screen feature read a Kindle title,
scrolling through the pages as it reads the text:

1.
Make certain that the Kindle app for iOS is closed and removed from the App
Switcher.

2.
>From the Spoken Content area of Settings, enable the Speech controller. I
>suggest that you set the control opacity to 100%.

3.
On the Home screen / LaunchPad of your iPhone, locate the Speech Controller and
expand and collapse it a couple of times in order to become familiar with how
it works. Note that the Controller floats on top of the display and will
remain in the same location on the screen.

4.
With the Controller collapsed, launch the Kindle app and open a title. Place
focus on the title from the point from which you would like the Speech
Controller to read.

5.
Now, expand the Controller and activate the Play button. As long as focus
remains on the Controller, it will read the text of the Kindle title,
continuously.

Whenever i start Speak Screen, for example reading a Kindle book on iPhone 15
pro or iPad pro M2, it always stops at the end of the page, refusing to turn
the page. This has been my experience for a long time. Any suggestions about
how to fix it?
Thanks

  Harry,
How are you starting speak screen in Kindle? It works in Apple's Books
app, but without a status bar, I cannot get speak screen to launch. I turned
on the speech controller, and set it to 62% but never found it.

  Good question Sieghard,

I thought that was mostly for non-VoiceOver users, or in the case of
speak screen, if you wanted to lock the phone while reading something
lengthy. But speak screen only requires a two finger swipe down from the
status bar... In the past, having both speak selection and speak screen on

Hello Gentlemen,

There are several reasons why the Speech controller can prove to be most
helpful.

1.
Even though Siri can read correctly formatted websites, out lout, it cannot
read articles from Apple’s own News app. Amazing, eh? So, as I am a big fan
of Apple News Plus, and frequently find myself reading long articles while on
the move or doing chores, where I may need to easily stop and start Siri

those found in BARD Mobile, Libby, and the Audible app.

2.
Although I am Alexa’s number one fan when it comes to enjoying Kindle books via
the Kindle app for iOS, slowly but surely, Amazon has removed Wired Ear Pods
playback functionality from the Alexa app. This is to say, one has to use
Voice commands, more and more, in order to engage Alexa. There are many
scenarios in which voice commands simply stop working, for example, if iPhone

Fortunately, the native Apple speech controller works better with the Kindel
app for iOS than ever before. So, while certainly not my first choice, if
given the option, Siri does a remarkably fine job of reading Kindle books with
more wired Ear Pods playback functionality than Alexa has offered in over two
years. And the best part? The speech controller now actively causes the
Kindle app to turn pages, as it reads, just like my beloved Alexa.

So, there you have it, two reasons why I find the native speech controller an
essential treat in the Apple orchard.

Hello All,

I feel as though I am missing something. Try as I may, I cannot locate the
Speech controller in iOS 17.2 when VoiceOver is enabled. Please do the
following on your iOS 17.2 device:

1.
>From the Accessibility Settings area, select, Spoken Content.

2.
Enable Speak Selection.

3.
Enable Speak Screen.

4.
Select Speech Controller and enable, Show Controller.

Now, open any app with text or, for that matter, open any dialog box in a list
view, such as the settings area and see if you can get the feature to work.

There used to be a way to see the speech controls at the top of the screen but,
try as I may, I cannot find them.

By the way, I have my Spoken Content voice set to Siri.

All replies most appreciated.

Mark

RE: With VoiceOver enabled, Can anyone locate the Speech Screen controller in iOS 17.2?

Sorry for my ignorance, but what are the benefits of using this speech
controller?

Did you remember to set the size of your speaking bar? I set mine to 52% I
found it at the top next to the volume up button on the left side of the phone.

in iOS 17.2?

2023-12-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Robert,

Thank you so very much.

I had neglected to adjust the opaqueness of the speaking bar. The setting is
labeled Idle Opacity and I neglected to read the description that follows the
adjustment control.

To be honest, but for your post, I don't think I would have ever associated the
opacity setting of the control with my inability to locate the control on the
screen. I set my idle opacity to 100% and now the control is easily located.

Thank you, again.

Mark
