RE: Accessible travel apps
It would help if you listed the services/apps/websites you have tried. I usually check Expedia, I haven't used Hotels.com or Booking.com (I believe those are for accommodation only) for a long time, but they used to be accessible 10 years ago so hopefully they are still. Kayak is also another one which should work. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Rafal Marzec Sent: Wednesday, June 1, 2022 4:21 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Accessible travel apps Hello everyone I would like to ask you about some accessible apps where I can check for example flight tickets and purchase it as well as hotels Unfortunately my experiences with the most popular hotel apps are not very good Sent from my iPhone -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Travel Apps
This week I am taking a road trip between Ohio and Georgia. I wonder if anyone knows of must – have apps for such car travel, via highways and freeways. I once heard of an app that, of course, I can't recall right now, which tells you of interesting, strange, or weird places nearby as you drive. I am thinking of something along those lines, as opposed to GPS maps, etc. I am going from Central Ohio to Savannah Georgia, which takes me through Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina. If anyone has any must sees, I will gladly except recommendations. We probably should exchange those privately, and my address is below. All thanks in advance! Re: Travel Apps
I used and app called iExit on our last car trip. It lets you explore what is at exits on the interstates. It was a bit frustrating at times with the voice over but I was able to use it. For instance I searched for Chick Fil-a and discovered there was one at the very next exit. Then I got the driving directions to it. I need to write to the developer since it did close on me several times which was frustrating but I am using IOS 7 on an iPhone 5. The app is free so give it a try. Hi There's an app called Skyscanners which spent a lot of time working with visually impaired people to make sure it was more accessible. It does flights anywhere in the world. However, it does take you to the operator's site for the actual booking and they are not all as good. For flight tracking, I really like FlightView. This app comes in free, regular ($.99), and Elite ($3.99) versions and works well with VoiceOver. It supports forwarding of itinerary emails to import your flight info into the app, push notifications, and sharing of flight information across multiple devices. I find it very easy to work with. RE: tell me your favorite and least favorite travel apps
Hi Paul, Tripcase is pretty good. You can send confirmations to tr...@tripcase.com mailto:tr...@tripcase.com and they are added into an itinerary similarly how tracking emails sent to Ship-Rack are added to the app. This way if you book hotels, flights, cars etc. you can send all of these confirmation emails to Tripcase and have them in chronological order in the app. If you ad flights you will also be notified of flight delays and so on and you get a few reminders the day before your trip and a couple of hours before. Kayak does the same, however, it is also accessible and you can book hotels, flights etc. For hotels I really like Booking.com since they were very responsive as far as accessibility improvements are concerned, but while Hotels.com is a bit more difficult to use, I do like the fact that they have their rewards program where if you book 10 nights you get 1 free night. I did briefly try the Agoda.com app and did not find it very accessible at all. In any case, any time I compared Hotel prices from booking.com, hotels.com or Expedia, I never found a significant difference. I have also recently used the Expedia app to book some flights from Hong Kong to Manila and some domestic flights in the Philippines and it works well except that at the final check-out page after you have entered all the details and credit card info, there is a slider right above the home key and the easiest is to double tap and hold and then slide it all the way from left to right as this is how you agree to their terms and conditions etc. You can flick up and it goes 0%, 10%, 20% etc. all the way up to 100%, but last time I tried this and somehow it didn't work and then I asked a sighted person and they explained the slider and I tried that and it worked right away. Another must-have for somebody who likes to travel especially if you go to places on holidays where you really want to find out about hotels, activities and so on is the Trip Advisor app from the www.TripAdvisor.com http://www.TripAdvisor.com website. Here you can find uncounted reviews of hotels, activities and all sorts of stuff and while Booking.com and Hotels.com have their own ratings, I always look for hotels I think are good and which are in my budget and then I go to Trip Advisor and read reviews from people who actually stayed there. They also have stuff like the Top 80 things to do in Manila just to give one example and so on. Then there is also a Trip Advisor City Guide app which I haven't really used much yet so I can't say how accessible it is. Lastly, depending on where I go I always check the app store to see if there are specific apps for that place. For example, for Hawaii the Revealed series of travel books has apps for Maui, Oahu and so on and while there are a few unlabeled buttons on the first screen, they are easy to figure out and once you are past them you can read tons of stuff about beaches, activities, restaurants and so on. Similarly I am going to the island of Boracay in the Philippines in a few weeks and they have their Essential Boracay app which is also relatively accessible. OK, hope this gives you some ideas, happy travelling. RE: Travel apps in general
Hi Penny, The apps that are being discussed use map data/information which is compiled by companies which do that. There are only a few of these in the world and basically all of the apps buy the rights to use this information from them. Google and Apple have gone out done a lot of their own mapping, but I am not even sure if they aren't even getting some information from companies like Navteq or Tele Atlas which are 2 of the main digital map providers. In any case, all the main stream GPS apps like Navigon, Garmin, TomTom, Motion GPS, MapQuest etc. use maps from either Navteq or Tele Atlas. Specialized apps like the new Seeing Eye app from Sendero which is the only full-featured app for the blind which offers both turn by turn directions for travelling along a route from point A to point B as well as ongoing information about streets and intersections as you walk along also uses Navteq Maps. I am simplifying this a bit since Sendero also uses another source for maps, but it sounds as if you have little knowledge at this point so such details I think are not relevant at this stage. Apart from Sendero there are apps like BlindSquare, Ariadne GPS or the earlier app from Sendero called LookAround. These apps help in telling you where you are, what is around you, what your nearest cross street is and which direction you are going in. Some do this better than others, in my opinion BlindSquare does the best job giving you automatic announcements of upcoming cross streets and points of interest and it also allows you to set your own places/points of interest. You could, for example, stand right beside the bench of a bus stop you use and set that as a place and the next time you walk along and come within a certain distance which you can determine, BlindSquare would tell you, for example, Bus Stop 1, 50 feet at 2 o'clock. Most GPS apps also give you information about so-called POI's or Points of Interest. These are things like restaurants, banks, businesses, stores etc. Just as with maps, there are companies who compile databases of such POI's. I suggest you start getting more information about the topic of GPS navigation by listening to Podcasts about some of these apps. There is a good Podcast about the Seeing Eye app on www.applevis.com and others are out there, if you are unable to find them via Google, maybe some other list members who have saved the URL for a specific Podcast will share it with you. Mike Errigo (hope I didn't misspell that) who recently rejoined this list has done some good Podcasts comparing main stream apps like Navigon and TomTom, if Mike reads this maybe he will contribute some useful information. I am also giving you the app store links and prices for some of these apps, the Seeing Eye app is free to download, but it is nonetheless your most costly option as it requires you to buy a subscription or licence after you download it. Without the subscription the app can't access the map information on the Sendero servers. The subscription is $70 for 1 year or $130 for 3 years. This sounds expensive as apps go, but the app does give a blind person the most useful information and $130 over 3 years only works out to $3.61 a month. Furthermore, if you buy a main stream turn by turn app like Navigon which costs $39 to $59 depending on what version you buy, you still need something like BlindSquare which is $20 because Navigon will not give you any information unless you enter a route, e.g. you are now here and want to go to this restaurant or this store etc. Even then it will tell you when to turn left or right, but as you walk along it may tell you to now follow the road for 1 mile and you may pass many streets as you go, but Navigon says nothing about these or what kind of intersections they are. You may have to set a route and let Navigon run in the background which it will happily do and then use an app like BlindSquare to get more information about what is immediately around you. The Seeing Eye app will do all of this in one app and if you are basically familiar with a route and you maybe just want some reassurance as you walk along, then the Seeing Eye app will just give you information as you walk without the need to set a route. I hear you discussing all these apps that show roads and streets walking or in the car. How does that all work? Do you just download the app and learn? Or do you first have to download something such as google maps ? Or would the addition of some other kinds of GPS that I haven't even thought of make these apps you're discussing more effective? Or, do they just work all by themselves without additions? Thanks, and sorry to be a pest. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Which app handles pedestrian travel? - Original Message - From: James Homuth ja...@the-jdh.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Wednesday, July 03, 2013 8:41 AM Subject: RE: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed! Funny. I figured she just didn't want to be ripped off. As has been said on here and elsewhere. Navigon is a one-time payment, and is pretty much exactly as accessible as the Seeing Eye app. They also don't charge you for updates. The Trecker, while more expensive, also doesn't charge you for map updates. And if we're being honest, the Seeing Eye app doesn't need to pay for its access to, let's say, foursquare information, which is where it pulls its points of interest from. So again, what are you paying for for $70/year? -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Kevin Barry Sent: July 3, 2013 6:17 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed! She expects everything for nothing. At 10:04 PM 7/2/2013, you wrote: Do you expect them to lose money on this app? They have to pay a fee in order to use the maps that this app utilizes. The problem is that there are not millions of people who are going to buy this app, only a few thousand, and the cost of using those maps must be spread out through the purchasers. I bought a human rare ware Trekker 7 years ago that did little more than this app. It cost me fifteen hundred dollars. If you do the math, after subscribing to this app and paying the taxes, it works out to less than twenty two cents a day. That is a small price to pay for something that is customized for a specific portion of the population. Chuck (mobile) Pleez x cuze enny tie ping or spelin air ores. I've already written this as a rating for the app, adding that it's nothing less than a case of total greed, greed, greed, taking advantage of blind people and stealing money out of their pockets. Sixty-nine bucks a year, that is outrageous! What a cocky attitude for Sendero to adopt. who do they think they are anyway? I couldn't even rate it zero stars and I begrudgingly gave them one just to speak my mind. Hi all, I took the Seeing Eye GPS app for a quick walk around my neighborhood to see how well it performed. I walked about one mile, and took a different route back. It worked well, although like most GPS apps it seemed to use a lot of battery, over twenty percent in the one mile walk. The interface of the app is simple and easy to understand. Entering an address is made easy because the state and city you are in are already entered, so only the address number and street need to be entered. If you are going to another city, however, you will need to change that field. I started by searching for a point of intrest and starting a route. The app uses voice over for most

Howdy, Does anyone know of any good apps that deal with finding good air line reservation deals? Or are there any good air fair tracking apps?
