Trouble getting voiceover to speak during a phone call
Hi, Do any of you have this problem? I am on a call and trying to find the number pad or speaker button, etc. For long periods of time, touching the screen offers no feedback at all. Every once in a while, I can get it to speak, but not always. I'm not sure what is going on. Any hints would be appreciated. I do have my ear near the speaker so I know I am hearing what is or is not happening, I did discover that if I put it on speaker however, it would work better. Any clues? RE: Trouble getting voiceover to speak during a phone call
Hi, I have just discovered that my phone seems to work better for getting VoiceOver when it is in land scape. Others? I find the same thing in Skype. However, one Skype question. I double tap the speaker button in Skype when on a call and nothing changes. It still comes through the ear piece. I know, more new user questions. But if this wasn't such a good place to learn, no one would ask questions. smile. RE: Trouble getting voiceover to speak during a phone call
Hi Neil, First of all, if you hold your phone close to your ear the proximity sensor engages and it locks the screen. You can touch the screen all day long and nothing will happen. The way Apple has solved this is that if Voiceover is running, the speakerphone will automatically turn itself on if you take your phone away from your ear. Sighted users who don't have Voiceover running have to tap the speaker button to turn on the speakerphone. I find that if I need to use the keypad, I take my phone away from my ear, also make sure you don't have your hand covering the top of the phone near the cut in the glass where the earpiece is since this is where the proximity sensor is located. You can practice/test this by just calling maybe some number like your bank's telephone banking number, start out with the phone to your ear, once the recording is playing take it away and see when it changes to speaker, then try to put your hand over the top part of the phone and try out how and where you have to put it to make it switch back to earpiece etc. Anyhow, once it's on speakerphone you should be able to use the screen, the DialPad maybe hidden in which case you have to swipe and find the KeyPad button (I think it's called KeyPad). You may also find that it is hard to hear Voiceover over the call volume. I suggest you add Volume to your rotor if you haven't done so already (in Settings, General, Accessibility, Voiceover, Rotor). Now when you are on a phone call and Voiceover is not loud enough, try to turn the rotor to volume and then flick up to make Voiceover louder, you can also try to make the call quieter with the volume down key. This used to work like a charm in iOS 5 and I was always able to balance the 2 volume levels nicely, but in iOS 6 unfortunately some people or devices seem to have problems with this. I can't speak for the iPhone 5, but on my 4S I can't do this so good any more. The best solution is of course to use a headset, either the earpods that came with your phone or even a bluetootgh headset. That way you hear Voiceover perfectly via the headset after you switch your phone to speakerphone. I'll answer your question about switching to speakerphone in Skype separately. Switching to speakerphone in Skype, was: Trouble getting voiceover to speak during a phone call
Hi Neil, After you double tap the Speaker button, a menu pops up above the row of buttons and you have Speakerphone, Earpiece and Cancel. You have to also double tap on Speakerphone to complete the process. If you want to switch back, double tap on Speaker, then find Earpiece in the menu that pops up and double tap on it. I believe if you have a headset connected it may say Headset instead of Earpiece. You can use left swipes after you double tap on speaker to find these options.
