Re: Reading bar codes with iPhone 7

2022-01-13 Thread Daniel MacDonald
Seeing AI will read prescription labels, though not as well as Script-talk.
Since you need minimal information you should be fine. Also Seeing AI has a
barcode reader. Not sure on the accuracy, as I’ve never had the need to scan
barcodes myself.

Re: Reading bar codes with iPhone 7

2022-01-13 Thread Holly

Bev:

You could try downloading 'Seeing AI'. It is a free app for iPhone and has
a product recognize channel. Open the app and flick up to you hear
'product' announced. Then scan the bar code. There will be a series of
beeps and the closer you get to the whole bar code, the beeps will increase
in speed. When the bar code is recognized, you will hear a musical set of
notes and then the info will read out.

The bar code is usually at the bottom left of the can label seam.
Seeing AI has a 'short text'' channel, which is the first one that comes up
when you open the app, and it may be able to read the prescription info.

Also, for the prescription info, you might try 'be my eyes' , if you have
it, or 'AIRA, if you have that app.

Subject: Reading bar codes with iPhone 7

Greetings, everyone.
I find this list so helpful that I hope someone will have suggestions for
me.

I am totally blind and have had difficulty reading bar codes even using the
ID Mate hardware products. But I get so much valuable information when I
can focus the reader on the product correctly.

I have an iPhone 7 with updated apps and the latest iOS (I think 15.2.1).

Can someone who is successful at this explain how to point the camera at the
product? Do I use the front or back camera?
Has anyone had success reading bar codes on vitamin bottles or products such
as aspirin?
I have tried Supersense and Envision. I get a series of beeps telling me
that I am getting close to the bar code, but no text is spoken.
Would a more updated phone have a better camera, nd would that help? I am
planning to upgrade some time this year.
I will try a potato chip bag to see if this works better.

Is there a link you can point me to for further help on this?
And one more thing:
Will any program read the name of a prescription drug from the codes on the
bottle? I have some bottles that are not marked for Script Talk or the CVS
program, and just need minimal information.

I would be grateful for any hints you might offer.

There are blank bar code tags that are designed to be labeled with the hand

can also be used to label them? And, would the tags previously mentioned

walmart does do braille labeling and some pamphlets I believe.

I can tell you that they have put a lot of time and effort in to this.

Not sure though how it is distributed.

I don't know if the labeling is only available when you order online or
how the local pharmacy can take advantage of it.

RE: App to Scan Bar Codes on Prescription Medications?

2014-02-27 Thread Tony
I just called my local WalMart pharmacy and they didn't know about a mail
order service.

I checked further and found it at 800 273 3455. They only do 90 day refills
but will provide the reader and will do a one time labelled bottle for a
shorter duration refill.

They have several ways to get the prescriptions to them including dropping
it off at the local pharmacy and having it held for the mail order pharmacy.
No more waiting for an hour or more at the local pharmacy only to find they
are out of stock and I have to wait a few more days for a shipment to
arrive. Just one o fthe joys of rural living.

Is there an app that can scan codes off prescription meds to tell you

RE: App to Scan Bar Codes on Prescription Medications?

2014-02-26 Thread Alan Lemly
Rob, I appreciate the link to the ScripTalk Station product. That system is
dependent on getting the prescription supplier to participate and issue a
talking label that works with the ScripTalk reader. Unfortunately, when I
attempted to execute the link on the ScripTalk page where it said For more
information on how to have your pharmacy participate and issue your
prescriptions with a ScripTalk Station, contact En-Vision America today., I
got an Error 404 - Not Found.

This doesn't give me much confidence in the product.

Re: Bar codes, recognition and databases

2013-11-17 Thread Don Breda
Yes I have run in to this as well but with digitEyes it reports the
barcode and tells you that this particular base number is often used as
an inventory barcode for the store.

I can't remember exactly what it says but it does tell you and try to
educate you at the same time grin!

A good program.

Bar codes, recognition and databases

2013-11-16 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi,
Not wanting to state the obvious but perhaps people mistake A lack of
information in the database for a barcode scanner not working. If, for example,
RedLaser pings, it means that the barcode has been found and registered.
However, if the result is only a number this means that the barcode cannot be
recognised from the available database. So, in an attempt to clear things up,
it wouldn't be right to say that RedLaser doesn't work just because the
database is not adequate to your needs. As long as it finds a number, it means
that RedLaser has recognised the barcode. Thus, as a barcode scanner, it is
working perfectly. The problem then, is merely one of the database size. I did
also like QR code reader, but for some reason, since the last update to703,
this is not working for me. It does, however, have a much larger database which
you can access, plus, it can access other databases such as that of digitise.
So, if we can only get this to work again, we would have the best of all worlds
with QR code reader and RedLaser on our iPhones.

With regard to general product recognition, let me remind you all that CamFind
is also excellent! This is not a barcode reader but a product recogniser.

Lastly, I just updated TextGrabber and find it to be really very good and much
more forgiving of skewed text when used even freehand. Speaking personally, I
don't find TapTapSee to be a tall satisfying. For reading information such as
thermostat settings or the status of a washing machine, I would much prefer to
use Face time or some such application and enlist the help of my friends.

Good luck,
Sandy

Re: Bar codes, recognition and databases

2013-11-16 Thread Alex Hall
I also want to add to this that some codes aren't going to work. For instance,
we order spices from a catalog and have them shipped. I scanned one such
container, and the code was found, but VO said nothing and the app kept
scanning. I had a sighted person look at things, and it turns out that the code
is used for packing and not as a final item identifier. What you get from a
store should usually work, but it seems that some places use packing and
sorting codes if you order items from warehouses like we do those spices. Red
Laser does not report this to VO, though, and there's just a quick note on the
type of code found that disappears after a few seconds. So, if you get a beep
but nothing else happens, it may well be the wrong type of code.

finding bar codes

Hi All,
I was told by a nother instructor that on cans the bar code is just to the
right of the seem at the very bottom. If you are searching for a bar code
on a box, it is usually on the end you don't open. On a package, it is
usually right below the seal that you pull or tear p to open it.

However, I am still having problems finding the bar code using digit eyes
with this information. I would love someone to share their positive
experiences and how it did work with them. Have a great day and Bod bless.

Re: Finding Bar Codes

2012-05-08 Thread Nancy M
If you haven't used the tutorials, you should.

Most actions take some time to learn. You probably don't remember
learning to eat by yourself or to walk because we learn that in infancy,
but you probably do remember learning to use a cane. Or if you have a dog,
learning to work with the dog.

The idea is intuitive, but the actual daily use takes some practice.

As a short tip, a camera is not a laser. The optics are different. Using
a laser, you scan horizontally, using a camera, you scan vertically.

The practical effect of this is that you do not want to keep moving the
camera across because it won't have time for its autofocus to work.
Holding the camera still and moving vertically is much more likely to make
the camera.

This is explained in the tutorial and you are given a chance to practice on
a well defined and known sample.

You will find that after you do the tutorials, scanning is much easier.

If you have not previously used a scanning system, you will find it very
useful to read the tutorial on where to find barcodes.

Other people here can probably offer tips as well.

But staring with the tutorials is a good one!

Here is a tutorial that we wrote about where the codes are:
  http://www.digit-eyes.com/cgi-bin/digiteyes.fcgi?action=scanningTips

It would be great if they were consistent, but they are not. They are nicely
put where people won't find them, but grocery store scanners will. Given that
the scanners are no more than 6 inches tall and scan the bottom, back and sides
of the item, you can pretty much bet they will be there.

One of the things we do recommend doing is to print up a bunch of labels
every time you do your shopping and put the purchase date on them (bought May
8, 2012).

While you are unpacking the groceries, scan the item and put the date label
close to where the manufacturer's UPC or EAN label is.

Then when you go to scan again, you'll have a tactile indicator of where the
code is and it becomes very simple to find.

Re: Finding Bar Codes

2012-05-07 Thread Nancy M
This is a very good question~

Some bottles have codes and some do not. If you ever want to confirm, you
can send us an image of what you are scanning. Just tap the link at the
bottom of the scanning screen titled 'send picture' and it will format a
mail to us that contains a picture. You can add a note with a question
like does this item even HAVE a barcode? and we will have someone get
back to you and let you know. If it is something with two sides like a
round bottle with a label that goes all round it, please try to send
images of both sides.

We do have a lot of codes (26,195,585 as of this writing), but we won't
have everything. I see we just added an expandamonium flexfit hat,
whatever that may be .. but we won't necessarily have all local codes.

The database does, however, grow with time and it is designed to grow in
direct relationship to its usage.

Digit-Eyes is (in part) a search engine that specializes in UPC and EAN
codes. We get our information in the same way that Google or any other
search engine does -- we have special computer programs (sometimes called
bots or spiders) that crawl the world wide web and get information from
manufacturer's and retailer's websites. This information includes UPC / EAN
codes and is used to provide the results to people who scan and to provide
links to the original sources so that you can find out more about the
product.

We have about a 95% hit rate for new users who are just starting up, which
sounds great (and is many time more than other products). But it still
means that about 1 in 20 items won't be found.

When this occurs, two things happen:

   1. You are given a chance to enter the name of the product if you know
it. This is immediately added to the database and becomes available to you
and all other users. Sometime later that day, added content will be checked
by our staff and the number added to the list of codes to be searched for
additional information by our spiders. Having the title of the item is
useful and will improve the probability of obtaining page links that you'll
   be able to access later.
   2. All failed codes go into a special high-priority search queue that is
used to direct the spiders to look for information about that code. When
the information is found, it is added to the database so it is ready for
you next time you scan the item.

The practical effect of this is that it is fairly common that find within
24 hours or so that the code that was previously not found is now in the
database.

And because the database is online and dynamic, it means that the more you
scan, the more likely the system is to find things in your area of the
country and the fewer things you will have that won't be found.

So in the case of Orb's pizza, when you scan one and it is not found, add
the name. That way it will be there next time you scan. Meanwhile, the
spiders will be looking for nutritional information, ingredients, and other
links that will be of use to you next time you have one.

There are cases where nothing will be found because the item is simply not
listed on the Internet. And there are times when we won't be able to get
extended information for the same reason. But there are many MANY cases
where it will be found and where data provided to you will become more
useful and richer over time.

Nancy, I purchased D-E last night. Playing around with it, I tried a

of aspirin. I could not find a code on the bottle.

I just wonder, since these products generally come packaged inside a box,
are there bar codes on the bottle, too? I have not yet had anyone look at
the bottle to see if one is there or not.

I did try a food can and eventually found the code on it, scanning in the
same place and same lighting, but it could not identify the product. I
 have
not yet read all of the training material, but it seemed kind of odd I
 would
have anything in my pantry not fairly commonly available all around the
country, unless maybe private store brand items are not as much available
 in
 the database?

I am looking forward to learning and using this. All thanks!
