RealVNC 4 beta

2003-12-16 Thread Jasper Kimmel
Hi there,

I'm new to these lists and hope that someone from RealVNC is looking in this
list?

I have been using RealVNC 4 beta 3 for a while but I stopped because the
option to scale the screen is gone. I'm using this functionality of version
3.3.7 a lot because I'm managing all kinds of different servers with
different kind of screen resolutions.

Another function that I'm missing is the ability to save a connection. I'm
using it to save the info of all the several servers to files and put them
in my taskbar as a shortcut. Maybe a suggestion for you is to make it
possible to link the file extension VNC to the viewer so just by double
clicking a VNC configuration file will result in connecting to the machine.

Will these functionalities be comming back in the official release of
RealVNC 4?

Win98SE and 4b4

2003-12-16 Thread Operator (Andy Thomson)
After about 6 hours of running it will close my connection unexpectedly
and do so for every attempt after that. The only cure seems to be to go
to the PC, stop the service and restart it. I have also tried the
service in user mode but it does the same. I can connect multiple times
before it decides enough is enough and then its reset service time.

Linksys router after Firmware upgrade

2003-12-16 Thread Ty Woodward
I know, I know. But don't worry I don't think this has been asked or solved
yet.

Configuration behind the router:
Linksys BEFSR11 Cable/DSL Router
5 PC's running Windows 2000 Pro
1 PC running Windows NT 4.0 Server
RealVNC ver. 3.3.7
Verizon DSL
No-IP Dynamic IP
No tunneling being used
All systems have latest versions of everything, and everything else is working
fine.

My question:
After upgrading the firmware on the router to 1.45.7 (Jul 31, 2003) I've lost
the capability to connect to the above mentioned PC's via the VNCViewer or the
Java Web based style.

My ports are being forwarded to the respective systems. eg. TCP Port
5902-5902 forwarded to 192.168.1.2, and the display number on that workstation
is 2. Same thing goes for port 5802. MTU setting is @1492. The PassThrough
settings on the router are all enabled

I'm able to ping the WAN ip address successfully.
If I use the Web Based version, and enter the address of
http://host.bounceme.net:5802 the grey login screen appears, I enter the
correct password, and click OK, and nothing happens. (and yes i've
substituted the no-ip host name with the actual WAN IP address and received
the same results)

If I use the VNCViewer and enter host.bounceme.net:5902 or [ip address]:5902
VNC doesn't return an error stating connection has failed, but it also doesn't
display a password box. If I enter the wrong port number it spits Connection
Failed error back at me. So I'm leaning more towards VNCViewer sees the
server, but the server isn't responding, or something's blocking it from
responding.

In house (physically in the room with the PC's and router) the PC's can
connect to each other with no problem. eg. 192.168.1.2:5902 works fine from
any of the other PC's. (Web or Viewer style)

I'm able to connect to other customer's which have different firewalls all
configured by me, and all with the same type of setup. The problem only
resides with this particular router with this version of firmware.

I understand one solution is to downgrade the firmware, which I could do since
I'm in no need of any of the fixes or new features, but I'd like to keep it,
and get it working if possible. Any ideas, suggestions, comments, hints, etc
are GREATLY appreciated.

(p.s. this is my first post to a mailing list, i hope i followed proper
procedures and etiquette :)

VNC Beta V4.0b4 with ZoneAlarm Pro V4.5.530.000 on Win2K Pro Desktop

2003-12-16 Thread Robert McMordie
Hi

I've also been having problems with RealVNC 4.0 and ZoneAlarm 4.5.530 (the standard
version, not Pro).

I'm using Windows XP Professional SP1 with ZoneAlarm and the 4.0 beta 4 viewer-only
package, and I'm trying to connect to a Win2K SP4 server running 4.0 beta 3. When I
try to connect I get the attempting to connect box displayed, and VNC gets no
further. If I try to connect from my XP machine to the Win2K machine using the Java
viewer, or if I turn off ZoneAlarm, everything works perfectly.

3.3.7 has that feature. During a connection, click in the upper left hand corner to
get your menu. Save the connection there. After you save your first connection
Windows will be associated with the .vnc files. I have like 400 of them. I was even
able to add an action so when I right-click on the .vnc file I can connect in View
Only. Pretty sweet.

busy mouse pointer not visible on VNC viewer

2003-12-16 Thread Eddie Kersten
Hello,

I've a win xp station on which I'm running a VNC view
on a application which is running on my SUN.

My problem:
Sometimes the application on the SUN is busy. On the
local screen (the screen of the sun station), this can
be seen by looking at the mouse pointer which is a
hour glass. On my windows station I have a regular
mouse
arrow.

My question:
I know that the mouse pointer is not a part of the
framebuffer, but is there a way to have the same mouse
pointer (the hour glass) on my windows pc when the
application on the SUN is busy?

way to tell if someone is connected is by the color of the System Tray icon.
Would be nice if it prompted the user ONLY if you were to take control NOT
for view only.

Hello guys,

I've been using vnc for remote administerint for almost a year now and
realized that something is missing in the new versions :-) There was a
little window appear aking the user something like this: Do you want to
allow xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx to administer? Yes/No. You know VNC is a nice thing,
but users are afraid of IT. They're afraid because they keep thinking that
IT is the watchdog, IT watches every move they do. So they don't really
appreciate when we just open up a connection.

Is there any way to implement such feature as an optional thing for the
future?

Kind regards,
MBJr.

2003-12-16 Thread Christopher Mc Carthy
My advice would be to dump ZA, you're not the first person to have
connection problems which are often identified as being due to ZA
misbehaving.

Here's a recent article on home firewalls:
http://www.securityfocus.com/printable/infocus/1750

FWIW my personal preference is for Kerio personal firewall
http://www.kerio.com/kpf_home.html. I've just seen that there's a brand
new version out (v4, still free) - not sure what it's like but I can highly
recommend the previous version 2.15.

HELP... Unable to connect

2003-12-16 Thread Al Lawrence
Let me preface this by saying that I am a BRAND NEW user of VNC. I tried to search the
archives for an answer to my problem and was not able to find it (not to say it wasn't
there just did not see it)

I have 2 computers set up as follows:

Internet setup:
___

Cable Modem
   |_ Router (Non-Wireless)
   |_ Computer A
  |_ Wireless Router
   |_ Computer C

Computer Software:

Computer A:
Windows 2000
Zone Alarm 4.5.530 (Default settings)
VNC Server Beta
VNC Viewer Beta

Computer B:
XPpro
Zone Alarm 4.5.530 (Default settings)
VNC Server Beta
VNC Viewer Beta

(1) I *AM* able to connect TO Computer A (VNC Server) FROM Computer B (VNC
Viewer)
(2) I am *UNABLE* to connect TO Computer B (VNC Server) FROM Computer A VNC
Viewer).
I get the message that it is trying to connect and that is all!

I had the same problem with VNC 3.3 so I installed the BEta to see if it would help!

I would appreciate ANY suggestions!!!

RE: Clients get disconnected

2003-12-16 Thread James Weatherall
That would seem to be the case for the Windows version but this is on
 Mac OS X.

The viewer, or the server? The server is the part that needs
configuring to have a longer timeout.

RE: Clients get disconnected

2003-12-16 Thread James Weatherall
 I'm running OSXVNC 1.31 on a G4 running OS X Panther. When a
 remote user
is inactive for about a minute they get disconnected. Can I
 change this
 behavior?

Ignore my previous mail on this...

You'll need to look at the OSXvnc docs. Chances are that if they
implement idle timeouts then they'll also allow them to be reconfigured
to something more sensible.

*** VNC 4.0 / ZoneAlarm 4.5.530 Bug Resolution ***

2003-12-16 Thread James Weatherall
*** VNC 4.0 / ZoneAlarm 4.5.530 Bug Resolution ***

To all users of ZoneAlarm 4:

ZoneLabs have confirmed that a bug in ZoneAlarm 4.5.530 can result in
connectivity issues with certain applications, including VNC 4.0. Their
recommended resolution is to revert to the previously-installed release
of ZoneAlarm on affected systems, and to remain with that version until
the next post-4.5.530 release of ZoneAlarm becomes available.

Regards,

The VNC Team

Thanks for the help. I found my problem. I took your advice
and was not able to telnet to port 5900. Since that should
have worked given the www.gotomyvnc.com results I figured
the problem must not be my ISP. So, I installed NetZero on a
spare laptop and tried telnet and VNC to my home. Both
worked perfectly. Something must have changed on my
company's firewall. Strangely, I'm the Net Admin and I
haven't requested any changes.

Thanks again,

Mcafee Firwall Issue

2003-12-16 Thread Tim Macklenar
This is my first post so hopefully this worked

Im having problems with Mcafee Firewall. My PC sit behind a lynksys router,
I can connect to multiple machines behind the router. On one PC, I have
installed Mcafee Firewall. VNC is installed as a service. I can not
connect to the machine until I stop and restart the vnc service. Firewall
lists the VNC service sometimes. When I restart the service, it show VNC
and the listening ears in the active program section. I can connect and all
is fine.

When I reboot the machine, I can not connect until I stop and restart the
service again. It's like VNC is not registering with Mcaffe firewall, or
Mcafee firewall is not detecting the VNC service. Ive tried allowing all
connections types, and no filter on the VNC program with no luck. The only
time VNC shows up as active in MCFW is when I stop and restart the service.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Xvnc connection issues

2003-12-16 Thread Aarti Pai
Hi all,

I've recently started using Xvnc 3 months ago on Solaris 5.9 to automate brio
reporting via the cron. It was working well, until recently. (I think there may have
been a recent Solaris upgrade from 5.8, which I'm in the process of confirming.) I've

help?

I get the following error when trying to launch Xvnc:

RE: Mcafee Firwall Issue

2003-12-16 Thread James Weatherall
Tim,

It's possible that this is a timing issue. If VNC starts before the
firewall then the firewall may not correctly pick up the service's
incoming connection socket and may therefore lose connections.

It may be worth asking McAfee about this - if it affects VNC then it
will probably affect many other network services.

What does the VNC tray icon say when you have rebooted and can't
reconnect?

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

RE: [Double-Click]

2003-12-16 Thread James Weatherall
Larry,

What sorts of thing are you clicking on when the problem occurs?

Are you clicking on things like Explorer shell icons?

 I found that if I triple-click, the double-click occurs.

What may be happening is that the first click causes a screen update
which causes a delay sufficient to prevent the double-click being
detected, and that the second and third clicks then get through
correctly and are processed as a double-click. If that is the case then
single-clicking on an icon before you actually double-click it should
work. If that works, we have a potential route to solving the problem.
:)

New to VNC and need help...

2003-12-16 Thread Mark Lent
Hi all,

Of course I need help, why would I be writing otherwise, huh?

Let me explain my situation:

I've been away from networking for some time now- last server I worked on
was a WinNT and now, I've been sortof thrown into a project with Server
2003.

I'm using Server 2003 with 2 locations- across town from each other. Both
locations have a DSL connection and a static IP address at each. Both are
using little 5 port D-Link routers (They are I-601 models, I believe). I
also have VNC set up at my home and am using this to test the other two
connections.

With the two stores, I can VNC out, but not in. At my home, I can VNC either
in or out... So, I can see other desktops, but others can not VNC into the
machine at either store that's set up for the connection. I keep getting a
Server can not be found error message.

Now, to me, the problem seems to be centered around a firewall issue with
Server 2003 (Forgot to mention that we took the router out and went directly
from the Westell modem to the server... Same thing is happening, so I am
assuming that it's a server issue).

So, my question to all of you nice, smart people out in VNC land is this: on
Server 2003, what am I overlooking in the firewall that could hinder an IP
connection for the VNC from the outside world?

Thank you one and all for your feedback.

Cordially,

Mark Lent

RE: Problems with VNC and USB mouse

2003-12-16 Thread Mark Hauchwitz
I exactly know what you're talking about, I'm having the same problems and
no solution yet.

VNC is configured correctly, and there is neither the Alt nor the Ctrl key
locked.
Mouse clicks only work within the taskbar, every other window loses the
focus if you click on it and basically no mouse click works.

I experienced that sometimes a right click immediately followed by a left
click temporarily solves the problem, but that's not a work-around.

The problem occurred after I installed a new USB wireless mouse, but since
I'm 5000 miles away from that pc now, I can't verify that it's the mouse by
reinstalling the old one/another one.

I'm also having the same problem with UltraVNC.

Mark.

RE: [Double-Click]

2003-12-16 Thread Larry Landaeta
James,

No, it doesn't matter if the item already has the
focus or not. Also, it can be a desktop icon, or it
can be anything else that requires a double-click.
There seams to be one exception:
If I open the mouse settings from the Control Panel,
I can perform the double-click timing test
successfully (no 3rd click required); however,
anything else that needs a double-click requires a
3rd click to work.

connection

2003-12-16 Thread Katia Cioffi
Hi,

I've installed a VNC server on my Linux machine and a VNC viewer on my
windows machine. I usually work in my office (upstairs) and the linux
machine is in the same building of the campus (downstairs). So I
establish an on-campus connection and it works well. If I'm off campus,
at home for example, it doesn't connect to my linux machine (I use also
ssh tunnels) and everytime I enter the IPaddress:port, it gives me the
message 'Failed to connect to the server'.

I've tried to solve this problem for a while, also asking help to my
network administrator, but I didn't manage.
Is there anyone who can help me to fix this? I would really appreciate.

Ps:putty works from home
Ping ipaddress works

Thanks in advance
