Networking Emac, Mac550 and PC

2003-03-04 Thread Kaye and Geoff

Hi,

Here we are with a new eMac, metres of cable, an ethernet hub, and a
brand new network.

Networking works just fine from the eMac to the Mac5500 (running
OS8.6) and the PC - the eMac can mount all the disks made available
to it, run software from the 5500, and shunt files around the system
with ease.

Unfortunately, we haven't been able to get the Mac5500 or the PC to
mount the eMac's disks - this seems to be a one-way network!

On the Mac5500 I have created an alternative TCP/IP configuration
(using Appletalk, which is configured to be on Ethernet). On the
Chooser, when I select Appleshare I can see the eMac - so far so good.

Double-click on the eMac, and I get a login screen. If I try to log
in using our (only) username/password I get the message:

The connection to this server has been unexpectedly broken

Same message if I try to connect as guest.

On the PC it is a similar story - we can see the eMac, but when we
try to open a connection it fails with a password error.

So...is there something that we should have done on the eMac end to
allow access from the other systems? Should there be a user login
just for network access, for example?

On the same topic, if we drag-and-drop folders from the eMac onto the
PC we are getting intermittent failures, where the system reports
that it can't find the files that it is meant to be copying. Repeat
the copy, or copy one-by-one and the files that previously failed to
copy now work. This only happens between the Mac and the PC -
Mac-to-Mac copies are perfect. Since we want to back up the Mac to
the PC this could be a real hassle. Any ideas?

As always - any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Error installing Omnipage OCR software

2003-03-04 Thread Shay Telfer

We've thought of creating a root account and doing the installation
as root, but while that might solve the problem in the short term it
wouldn't tell us what was going wrong and it might leave us with
software that we could only access when logged in as root.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

If you trust the installer to behave itself properly as root you can
drop it onto the window of an application called 'Pseudo' which
should grant it enough privileges to do its stuff.

Pseudo is available from

http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill/pseudo.html

Good luck,
Shay

Westpac cookies?

2003-03-04 Thread Shay Telfer

Hi...

This morning Westpac's on-line banking site claims that my browser
(IE 5.2.2) doesn't accept cookies.

Anyone else had this happen to them?

It worked fine last week, and my browser is definitely accepting
cookies. I suspect they may have 'upgraded' their site.

Works under Safari though...

Thanks,
Shay

All of your computers need valid IP address and subnet mask
information configured. The AppleTalk protocol is used by Mac OS 9
and earlier (and optionally by Mac OS X) to discover AFP servers on a
network. When a client tries to make a connection to the server it
will ask the server whether it is capable of using TCP/IP as a
connection protocol instead and, if so, will switch to trying to use
that for the connection. If the client and server don't have valid
IP configurations then that will fail and you'll see the error
message you described.

Note that AppleTalk is now considered a legacy protocol.

In the Accounts pane of System Preferences on Mac OS X, select the
user who you want to grant access from a Windows PC then click Edit.
In the window which comes up for you to edit the user's details
you'll see a check box labelled Allow user to log in from Windows.
Check that and you're done.

Which version of Mac OS X and which version of Windows are you
referring to? The current version of Mac OS X is 10.2.4. The
current version of Windows, er, rather depends on which flavour of
Windows you're running.

Explorer problem

2003-03-04 Thread Michael Hawkins
I have Explorer 5.2.2 installed on my G3 PowerBook, running OS 10.2.4

Yesterday while printing from Adobe Reader 5.1, I got a message to the
effect that the computer had run out of memory. I forced quit by holding
down the power button, then restarted and ran Disc First Aid and repaired
privileges.

Ever since then IE goes to msn as a home page, despite the fact that I have
deselected it in preferences. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Michael Hawkins.

File Copying Differences

2003-03-04 Thread Antony N. Lord

Machine A : OS 9.1 (no firewire)
Machine B : OS X 10.2.4 + External FireWire Drive

Machine A was up the creek and needed some data copied off before it
was wiped an reinstalled.

I copied about 6Gb of data in less than an hour via the 100 base
ethernet network to the FireWire drive.

Machine A has be reformatted and reinstalled so its time for the data
to go back.

Connecting either way (A to B or B to A) indicates a copy time of
around 8-9 hours (even after waiting a while) - the transfer rate is
a fraction of the original.

What is the cause of this? (Connect via TCP/IP is enabaled as I
believe it was on the old install.)

Cheers, Antony.

If the SE version is like the full version, I believe it has to be installed
while booted into OS 9.2.2. It should then run in OS X.

Am I missing something here ! ?

I have OmnipagePro, which has a version X
for use with OSX ( older version was 8 )

Nobody has mentioned, but the Omnipage SE that you are trying to instal
would need to be an X version I suspect.

VPC 6 not communicating with modem

2003-03-04 Thread Angus Russell
Hiya

Running 10.2.4 and VPC 6.

Need to run proprietary software from HSBC, but the modem is not responding
to query from VPC - any suggestions please.

When request for more info in the diagnostics window of modem properties
I get the following message
modem failed to respond

Modem chosen is standard 56k V90, and the v90 is chosen in osx - I get the
same problem even if I choose v92. COM2 port is chosen - in fact everything
is identical to the set up as on my old G3 running vpc3 but it doesn't work.

Have trashed preferences, reconfigured everything in sight - no change.

Desperately need to sort this out.

Many thanks

Angus

Future Prize Draws

2003-03-04 Thread Dark Servant

Just a few rules that I think should apply to all prize draws

1. You must be a financial member before the prize draw

2. You must be at a present at the meeting to win

3. If you win a prize that you are not going to use very often or at
all then you should decline the prize and allow a redraw for someone
who will benefit from it (selling prizes is not classed as benefiting
under this rule)

If anyone disagrees with any of these suggestions I am more than happy
to debate them.

Old style mouse

Does any one have a spare old style mouse to sell or give?

Thanks for any assistance.

Re: Outlook Express - archiving

I archive the content of Outlook Express by backing up the entire folder
called Identities at least once a week. This has all the settings and

every quarter is risky.
