I use the same camera with my Powerbook, using Photoshop Elements to
post-process the images. This version of Photoshop does not work with
raw NEF images: only the Nikon software can handle those. NEF is short
for Nikon Electronic Format, a much less universal format than TIFF or
JPEG.

I set my camera to save the images in either JPEG compressed format
(good enough for snapshots) or as uncompressed TIFF files. Images in
RAW format have to be converted to TIFF images using Nikon's software
before I can use them.

Fwd: PhotoShop CS/Image Ready anomaly

2004-08-01 Thread Jon Davison

Hi Severin

Maybe you have done this already? When you hit the .NEF file in say
File Browser, the RAW dialogue window gives you two settings, Basic and
Advanced buttons. Basic gives you two variables, Advanced a lot more.
Maybe this is off? Otherwise I can't think what the problem could be.
RAW/NEF files are magic, complete with all the camera controls that
enable you to re-expose the frame etc any number of times after the
event. I don't think too many people realize what this can do. It is
not simply just a file format. I agree the Nikon aps like PhotoStation
4.5 are a poor comparison.

Cheers for now, I hope this helps.
Jon

 Hi every1,

I repair permissions religiously every week and for the last two months I
 have gotten the following message:

We are using special permissions for the file or directory
 ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util. New permissions are
 33261

33261 is the weirdest permissions value I've ever seen. Does HFS+ use a
completely different model for permissions, or are they really setting
that file to be write-only to the owner, read/write to the group, and
execute-only for anyone else?

Nope, looks like they're just printing the permissions value as a
decimal for some incomprehensible reason:

python -c 'print %o % 33261'
100755

seems much more reasonable - read/write/execute user, and read/execute
group and other.

WAMUG is very tolerant of advertising compared to most mailing lists. On
quite a few lists one may be flamed simply for replying to a who do you
know that does this... post with a short note that your business offers
that service.

It's possible that the dealers don't want to offend anyone on the list.
I'm just guessing here, of course.
