Old fraud, New tricks

2004-12-08 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi WAMUGers,

Some info for the eBay bidders.

http://theage.com.au/articles/2004/12/06/1102182189439.html

Australian eBay users who ignore the online auctioneer's instructions
for safe bidding are losing thousands to fraud, as the company urges
users to educate themselves on safe buying.

eBay says just one in 10,000 transactions are fraudulent and, for the
most part, the crimes are traditional confidence scams perpetrated over
the internet.

Alastair MacGibbon, eBay Australia's director of trust and safety, says
the only way bidders can stay safe is to follow the company's
guidelines.

It's really about leading a horse to water, he says. This is an
issue of people protecting themselves online.

Cheers,
Ronni

yes it does with in that (different) context but once you have bought
up the switch applications bar (cmd+tab) As per the article it
functions the same as the back arrow or the more cumbersome
shift+com+tab.

I just figured out why I got something different. I'm using 10.2 on my
Wallstreet, which does not have the 'switch apps bar'. Cmd-tab in 10.2 just
cycles through the apps, just like OS 9. The 'switch apps bar' must be
specific to 10.3.

From a User Interface perspective the 'shift' option is more
intuitive as the shift is a modifier on the command-tab meaning
'reverse'. Some Mac text editors (BBEdit for example) support
shift-delete for forward-delete, for example.

Re:quicktime or firefox bad?

2004-12-08 Thread Nancy McIntyre

Update.

Real confirmed that the quicktime update mungled the configuration
for SMIL 1.0 file types.

If you want to return correct handling of smil files:

Removing SMIL 1.0 from quicktime's file preferences won't fix the problem.

However, you will note in your realplayer 'Media Types' preferences
that if any of the media types you originally assigned to realplayer
have been taken by another application, a bullet should appear to the
right of the corresponding media type(s) and the Save Media Types
button should be enabled. Try clicking on the Save Media Types button
and play your content again. You may need to quit and restart firefox
and realplayer.

It appears that checks in the Media Type boxes are no longer a
reliable UI signal :-(

Bali Business and the BBQ :-)

2004-12-08 Thread Malcolm J McCallum

Hi Wamuggians !
I have spoken with Kevin Lock about the school that got the Macs. It
makes a very interesting story and I have persuaded Kevin Lock to come
to the BBQ as my guest to tell the Group how they got the Macs and
printers to Catur Primary School in Bali and set them up. I sat
fascinated for an hour plus on a Sunday morning and I think the Wamug
group would be interested to hear a potted version. I had ideas of
auctioning off the remaining BBQ beef and snaggers and putting this
towards the maintenance of the Machines. A 'tech' has been located who
for $2.00 an hour is willing to service the machines. It is obviously
no good these kids having these machines if as soon as they run into
problems they are stuck.

The computers were got through customs with the help of The John
Fawcett Foundation, an Australian who has the ear of the Prime Minister
so this not some 'tin pot organisation' and there are safeguards in
place to stop the equipment going into the hands of undesirables!

Url of John Fawcett Foundation :-
http://www.humanitarianprojectsindonesia.org/news/newsupdate.htm Kevin

Obviously we could supply more equipment but waiting to see how this
lot goes would be the way to go.

There are some photos of the kids which Matt is going to put up on the
Wamug site so you can see who is getting the macs

Re: Was: Wanted Startup Disk for Apple Iic or e now AppleWorks Startup Program

2004-12-08 Thread Greg Sharp
It took a lot longer to organise than I thought it would, but at last it
appears everything has been sorted out as far as sourcing the required
disks.

I'd like to thank everybody who offered help both on list and privately.

This episode demonstrated one of the great reasons for belonging to a Mac
User Group. In the beginning this invalid pensioner had her AppleWorks
Startup disk destroyed by her grandkids. As a housebound pensioner one of
her only means of entertainment (her old Apple Iic) couldn't be used. She
lives in Sydney and when she called Apple they gave her the phone numbers to
all 3 of the Sydney Mac User Groups.

The first 2 she rang laughed and said no way they would be able to help so
by the time she called the Sydney Mac Users Group which I also run and I
heard her story I wanted to help.

I also run the Australian Mac Users Group (whose aim is to help ALL
Australian Mac User Groups and Mac users) and try to monitor/get involved
with all the various Mac Groups in Australia. This is where WAMUG comes in.
Of all the Australian groups I feel WAMUG has the best email list and a
great membership based on my observations. It may seem strange with me being
in Sydney but WAMUG was my first choice in seeking help.

Despite a number of hick ups I got numerous offers of help. I'd like to
publicly thank James/Hans Kurt, John Weekes, Andrew Nielson for their offers
Kathy Quinlan, Rod, Robert Howells, Peter Hinchcliffe, Reg Whitely, Tom
Lewis, Rod Finlay, Jon Davison for their suggestions (hope I didn't miss
anyone) and James Fraser for eventually copying the disks and contacting the
lady about the disks. The interesting thing is that James Fraser lives in
Tasmania. It's funny that a Sydney Group went to a Western Australian Group
to be helped by a Tasmanian. This whole process shows what can be achieved
when Mac Users get together. It might seem minor to most people but to the
lady involved it was a small miracle.

All the best
