Re: iPhones now on sale from Apple online store
Hi Mike Yes, you can by a UK sim and use it in your unlocked iPhone. Last year I took my Optus unlocked iPhone to UK where I bought a pre- paid O2 data sim, I think I paid £10 for it. You then pay £10 per month for data access which is unlimited quota for the first 12 months. You can opt out (and in) of the data bolt-on by sending a text message to O2. I used the same O2 sim again on my visit to UK last month, I just opted back in to the data bolt-on, £10 was taken from my pre-paid balance and I was off and running again with my fully functional Optus iPhone operating on the O2 network with no roaming charges. Re: Anyone know of freeware to delete duplicate emai l addresses ?
Adam, Andrew - thanks heaps for your suggestions. Adam, I have a vague idea of Terminal but I'm not overly familiar with command line prompts and all that stuff, so I wasn't really sure what to do with your suggestion, or how I could use it in conjunction with a file full of email addresses. Andrew, I had a look at your sample spreadsheet - very resourceful and inventive. The file I have complicates things a little by having things like commas after email addresses, most lines having one email address but some having two, etc. I'll take you up on your generous offer if it's still open. You could probably do in 5 minutes what it would take me all day and still get wrong. It's not a confidential list. I'll email through separately. Cheers, Steven On 01/07/2009, at 3:58 AM, Andrew Bignell wrote: Steven You could this in a spreadsheet like Excel or Apple's Numbers. The trick is after opening or importing the text doc, is to sort them by the email address field and then add a formula in a new column that tests to see if the email in the cell directly above is the same (the first cell will be empty). If it's the same (duplicate) the formula returns the value of 1, and 0 if false. Now you have to sort all the columns on this new column and all the 1's will be the duplicates. BUT before you do this, you have to convert the column from a formula to just the value of 1 or 0 FIRST. To do this Edit- Copy and then Edit-Paste Special and choose Values. I have attached an excel doc (sent direct to your email only) with a sample formula for you to work with, but if you get stuck I can do it for you (but I know it is email address i.e personal data) but I thought I would offer any way. iPhone 3G S - Telstra Plans
Hello WAMUGers, Today I received a phone call from a Telstra representative (my current contract expires with them on 30th July '09). We got talking the new iPhone 3G S and he was continually pressing the point that Telstra is Australia's largest, fastest and most reliable 3G network. He then sent me an email with Telstra's new iPhone Plans. I'm interested in your opinions on these plans in comparison to other carriers please. Telstra's monthly included data download is terrible I think, $5 for the $30 $40 plans which equates to 5MB of Data ... excess data charged at $1.00/MB ... yikes! And then there is this in Telstra's -Things you need to know: 1. iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G are configured to work only with the wireless services provided by Telstra. I have stayed with Telstra all these years for its better coverage, but I'm seriously contemplating a change of carrier for an iPhone 3G S. Telsyte principal research analyst Warren Chaisatien says Optus has again released the most aggressive iPhone plan prices, increasing data allowances for the internet-savvy phone and introducing plans with unlimited phone calls and messaging. Re: iPhone 3G S - Telstra Plans
Ronni, I had an Optus mobile before switching to an iPhone 3G, but have to say the $99 timeless plan seemed very good so that is what I went with. Unlimited national mobile, STD and local. Unlimited voicemail or SMS. 1.5Gb data - from what I've been told this includes tethered access data as well as mobile internet. 32Gb handset included with 24 mth plan. I signed up for this with an Optus reseller. They at first said it would be $113.99/mth, and that the $99 offer - with $14.99/mth mobile pack - (which I had seen an ad for) was only available online. But later it turned out they could do it for $99, so I have a business timeless plan for $99 that *includes* the $14.99/mth Mobile Internet. I've seen people worry about coverage issues - I've never noticed any problems with Optus mobile coverage. On the plans, I am sticking with Telstra because they provide the best coverage outside of the city. I know you can switch to roaming, but that hasn't been a very good experience in the past, maybe it has got better. But, I don't use my iphone for the internet or email very much unless I have wifi access. So, one idea would be to get an unlocked phone from the Apple Store, then buy a prepaid SIM with Optus, and check out the coverage. If it works well for you, then you could go onto a plan. cheers, susan. Re: iPhone 3G S - Telstra Plans
Thanks Susan, Marcus Glenn, I use my Mobile mainly for emergencies SMS, I am currently only on a $20 mth 12 month contact with Telstra. I possibly wouldn't use the iPhone much differently, I would use the iPhone for accessing my email as I do with iPod Touch (on a Wireless Network), not using the Telstra 3G Network. So I require a Private Plan not a Business Plan. I would prefer to stay with Telstra, as I said previously I have stayed with Telstra because of the better coverage when I travel through the country areas. Also the Devil you know syndrome ;-) Susan, are you on a Telstra 24mth Plan or a Pre-Paid? Re: iPhone 3G S - Telstra Plans
Hi Ronni, Depending on your area and coverage the Vodafone plans are also well worth looking at. I have heard that 3 Mobiles will be very good. In regard to your time frame, if your existing contract comes to an end on July 30, you can choose to continue to pay monthly without committing to another contract. Carriers do use the end of contract time to 'coerce' you into signing a new contract, and sometimes it is worth it if they throw in a discount or free handset. The last Telstra contract I had I left running for about 3 months after then end before switching to Vodafone. The main reason was that they left it until the last month of my contract to tell me I could save money on a lower cost plan when they could have switched me over 6 months earlier! Re: iPhone 3G S - Telstra Plans
Hi Ronni, I am on a 24 month plan, $30.00, with no extra data. Which is why I avoid checking email when out and about. But, this is an older plan, with a different phone, when the iphone came out I bought one outright and put my SIM into it. The phone is, however, locked to Telstra. I like the idea of an unlocked phone that I can use with any SIM card - so if going for the iphone 3Gs, I would buy it from the Apple Store unlocked. It would be nice to have a small amount of data included, so may look at this type of plan in future. cheers, Susan. Thanks Susan, Glenn, Jane Very helpful information and I'm looking forward to getting this new toy...5 to 7 days I'm told. And I'm keen to hear what Ronnie decides...everything I've read is 1. What is happening? I have not changed changed any network setting since we got the Airport Extreme (in fact I have even forgotten my password. Ronni, Interesting reading your dilemma, however do you know if the iPhone gives the same performance as your present mobile in the same coverage area. I use my mobile just for emergencies and I was fortunate enough for Telstra enabling me to do testing for Next G of various mobiles (South of Yallingup). The result was that all mobiles are not the same relative to reception. Would be very interested in your comparison, particularly since I have been asked by locals whether I know. Buying an unlocked iPhone 3Gs - does it get locked onc e you use it?
Hi Ronni, I looked at later emails, but there doesn't appear to be a response to your question at the end about being locked to a carrier in order to work. Now, I am not sure, I would have thought not, since other mobile phones don't have to be locked to a carrier. You can swap different carriers' SIMS in these phones without any problems. For example, I have a little Samsung unlocked phone that has used Telstra, Optus and China Mobile SIMS without any problems. However, the iphone is linked to iTunes, and this MIGHT change things. I hope someone knows for sure because I would like to be able to use a different SIM when travelling. My present iPhone is locked to Telstra, so I haven't been able to use the China Mobile card. cheers, Susan. Re: iPhone 3G S - Telstra Plans
Hi Ronni. I just bought an iPhone today on the $40 Telstra phone plan. I looked at most plans under $100 for Telstra, Optus and Vodaphone and made myself up a pricing plan comparison in Numbers for each phone size and plan. I also looked at one Member Plan at Telstra for the equivalent $40 plan. If you have the phone already, a member plan looks the way to go. The main difference, besides not paying for the phone, is that the $5 data is not included in the member plan but you get $40 worth of calls instead of $35. However, total cost over the two years, including the purchase of a 32GB iPhone either outright or on a phone plan resulted in the phone plan being cheaper. If you'd like, I can email you my Numbers comparison off list. It also has the coverage of the three networks. I ended up going with Telstra mainly for the coverage. From their own maps (all three carriers), Telstra is the only one that virtually covers Rottnest. I have also spoken with a couple of the blokes at work who reside down Mandurah, Rockingham way and each have gone away but returned to Telstra because of difficulties with coverage. Also, assuming I don't use more than my allotted calls and data per month, it's actually cheaper! Now comes the fun part of learning what I'm doing with my iPhone. Re: Buying an unlocked iPhone 3Gs - does it get lock ed once you use it?
Hi Susan, Ray Forma emailed me off list with these comments: Ronni, all correct except ... then if I decide to change to another Carrier the new carrier's SIM would work on my phone. Thank you Ray, Ahh, now I 'think' I understand. So even though I can get the iPhone 3G S cheaper through Telstra by going on a 24 month Plan (I know their data rate fees are not good). The $30 plan telstra will give me a iPhone 3GS 32GB for only $549 ... Apple iPhone 3G S 32GB will cost me $1,040. So you are saying, purchase the iPhone from Apple (at the higher price), then I could put my current SIM card (which is Telstra) in it and it will work, then if I decide to change to another Carrier ... this SIM would work on that carrier? But, if I purchase the iPhone from Telstra, I'm 1) locked into a 24 mth contract. 2) when that 24mth contract ends, I would not be able to use another SIM card from another Carrier? Is this what you mean? Many thanks for your advice I appreciate it. Cheers, Ronni On 03/07/2009, at 6:31 PM, Ray Forma wrote: Ronni, If you buy your phone from a carrier they will supply a phone locked to their network. Change the SIM on a locked phone to a SIM from a different carrier, and the phone won't connect because the phone is unlocked. Moral: never buy a locked phone. Hi Darrel, No Darrel, I don't know if the iPhone 3G S will give the same performance as my present Nokia in the same coverage area. As I've said previous, I have always been with Telstra as I've found the coverage when travelling in the country is better than other carriers. But, back a few week-ends ago, I was staying in Denmark (at The Chimes Resort) I could not get any coverage, but other people with Optus mobile had full quality. This amazed all of us, when I mentioned it to the Telstra Representative, he suggested that we could have been very close to an Optus Tower ... but did not now why I could not get any reception. This is the first time I have experienced trouble down south. Until I purchase an iPhone 3G S I won't know how good the reception will be, but I expect the same if not better than my Nokia. Sort photos by time shot using Bridge
Hi to any Photoshop gurus, I am using Photoshop CS4, and download (RAW format) and rename and sort photos using Bridge. When I do a wedding or family shoot I always have 2 cameras on the go. My problem is that I want to integrate both sets BY ACTUAL TIME OF DAY the photos were taken so that they blend, as per the order of the day's events. I see in Bridge I only have the option to sort by date (and other non useful options). Am I asking too much? I guess I should get on to Google and type in my problem but thought I'd check with our wonderful WAMUG brain tank first! The quickest way to reset the display is to use the following key combination: 1. Press Control - Shift - Eject. 2. After the display goes to sleep, wake it by pressing any key on the keyboard. Re: iPhone 3G S - Telstra Plans
Hey Ronda - my experiences as Telstra mobile user, coupled with discussions I've had with Optus and Virgin users and my own research leads me to believe the following: 1. You pay at about 25% more to be a Telstra mobile user (vs Optus). 2. Telstra on the whole have a superior network, including coverage and tech support. However, Optus has a much better deal - personally, I'm looking at Virgin, which seems to offer better data plans than Optus. My conclusion: If I was using my phone for business, and it had to be up and running 99% of the time, I'd pay the premium for access to the Telstra Network. If I wasn't using my phone for business, and the risk of losing money from call dropouts wasn't an issue, I'd definitely go with Optus or Virgin. Cheers, T. P.S. For the record, my earlier email to the list about Telstra vs Optus networks got positive and negative experiences from both sides - my conclusion is based on a subjective averaging of the stories. Also, by 'better deal', I'm referring to plans which include paying off the phone over 24 months. Haven't looked into paying the phone off upfront. P.P.S. Apparently Telstra have extensive 'doesn't go towards your download quota' wireless coverage in cities such as Sydney, so the terrible data plans Telstra offer don't affect users as much there. 'May be why we look at the Telstra plans and shake our (collective) head with disbelief. Re: Inkjet Printer
Our Brother telephone/fax/answering machine has not been sending facsimiles at a good quality level. Printing a received fax is fine, but recipients who receive quality faxes from other people receive mine with a two inch, oops! 5.08 cm wide blank strip to the right of centre. Cleaning doesn't seem to change that. And so - I bought an Epson Stylus Office TX600FW. It won't print on CDs so I will have to continue with my Avery Inkjet Media labels. There does not seem to be a guten driver for the printer so the dialogue window for the printer is the traditional Epson style so you don't know what dpi level is being used at the various options. However, to date the few scans and prints look very good. Initially I could not use the provided scanner software and had to access the scanner through Photoshop Elements. I contacted Epson Support by phone and got a very helpful person who after checking set up with me suggested I uninstall the Epson Scanner program, restart the computer and then reinstall the program. I'm using wireless so ran through the set up once more for the scanner after the reinstall and it worked. Big thank you to Epson Support. Two faxes sent to one of my sons, one BW one colour, and both gave very good quality. Thanks for all the comment on my first choice the R290, but Brother and Canon seem to dominate in most stores I visited. I eventually found Epson at Tandy and Dick Smith. Neither Tandy nor Dick Smith had the R290 so I bought the TX600FW from Tandys. One down side to the new acquisition is that I cannot use my Epson 35 mm Film Adapter for scanning slides on it so I will have to keep my old Epson Perfection 1260 Photo scanner. The TX has card slots, ethernet and usb ports only. Merv I also have a photo R290 and have had no problems either with paper jams or printing to CDs. I know you can switch to roaming, but that hasn't been a very good experience in the past, maybe it has got better. But, I don't use my iphone for the internet or email very much unless I have wifi access. So, one idea would be to get an unlocked phone from the Apple Store, then buy a prepaid SIM with Optus, and check out the coverage. If it works well for you, then you could go onto a plan. cheers, susan. Does this mean you cannot access any other wireless network? http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/phones/iphone/pricing.html Optus still seems to have the better plans. Optus iPhone 3GS plans include the company's popular $59 plan with data boosted from 500MB to 700MB a month and so-called timeless plans with unlimited calls and messaging starting at $99 and including 1.5GB of downloads. And Telstra is the only carrier not to offer iPhone tethering, allowing use of the iPhone as a modem. http://www.news.com.au/technology/story/0,28348,25717048-5016091,00.html How I'm interpreting the
