Re: CD/DVD Cover design software?

2009-07-15 Thread Kaimaha Keremeta

Thank you to all who replied to my query :)

Discus seems like a very good and popular product.

But I think I'll go with either Disc Cover by Belight, or DiscLabel
due to their integration with Aperture. Thanks for informing me of the
problems you had Martin with alignment, something to be wary of in the
future. Severin, I believe that Discus now has the facility to print
directly onto discs.

any paper makers format that you can think of!. I think it will
print direct to discs but I have not ventured into this!

features integration with Aperture as well as iPhoto and embedded
integration with BeLight's Art Text product which are very handy
features for power mac users.

One problem I had with the old version (v1.5.1) was getting it to
line up with the discs consistently (our Epson has a DVD printing
attachment for printing directly onto discs).

It was also a bit of trial and error getting the right colour
settings for printing directly onto printable CDs and DVDs - It
often turned out that the plain paper setting gave the best
colours, while the CD-R setting ended up very pale. However,
this was an issue for both the Epson software as well as Disc Cover
and I think is more an issue with the type of printable discs we
were using.

I haven't yet used version 2 of Disc Cover which I believe fixes
the disc alignment issue. (v2 was actually released a year and a
half ago and is now up to v2.3.1, so I am a bit behind the times!)

I haven't used Discus - it looks a bit too much like an MS Paint
port from Windows 95 and the templates look a bit too Microsoft
Clipart-like for my taste, but it sounds pretty popular! (Disc
Cover is Mac OS X - only and requires 10.4 or 10.5)

Have any of you Discus users found any problems with it like disc
alignment or have most of you just been printing on disc labels?

I haven't used DiscLabel which Peter recommended, but that package
looks pretty good too. :-)

Re: free telstra wifi, was RE: more iphone questions

2009-07-15 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Hugh,

On 15/07/2009, at 1:33 PM, Hugh Griffiths wrote:

I have tried to do a bit more research about this free Telstra wifi
question for iphone, and I have been given several answers, none of
which quite make sense, and none of which I can test or validate as
I don't yet have an iphone.

1/. Telstra iphone support says that the iphone downloads a
different set of apps and Os when you connect to itunes, and one
of these bits actually knows that you are on a Telstra sim and
have an iphone therefore you get authenticated logon to Telstra
wireless points.

From my experience I understand that when the Telstra Person inserted
my SIM Card (which was my original SIM card I had in my old Nokia),
connected it to iTunes on their computer it Tethered / Activated my
iPhone Plan.

2/. Telstra sales man says that you need to have an actual iphone
plan from Telstra as this triggers the authentication

That's correct as far as I am aware.

3/. Whirlpool forums indicate that with the older iphone 3G the wifi
spots were only free when the bill was generated, ie you associated
with a Telstra wifi spot, accepting the charges, but at the end of
the session the charge was zero'd.

That sounds correct.

On my New iPhone 3G S you download BigPond Mobile for iPhone which
places an icon on your Home Screen.
NB: BigPond Mobile for iPhone content is available when your iPhone is
connected to the Telstra Next G™ network, but is not available when
accessing the internet via a WiFi hotspot.

When you are in a Telstra Wireless Hot Spot (WA doesn't have many at
all), you launch the BigPond Mobile for iPhone you are directed to
the Telstra Wi-Fi login screen.
You select the Telstra Post-Paid Mobile login option and enter your
Telstra mobile phone number.

Read and accept the 'Things you need to know'.
You'll receive a one-time login PIN via SMS. Via the login screen,
enter the 6-digit PIN and submit the details.

Then when you log off from the service you'll receive an SMS
containing your session details.
The message will confirm the session is free for Phone Plan for iPhone
customers.

http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/phones/iphone/get_started.html

http://www.telstra.com.au/wirelesshotspots/locations.htm

Does anyone have any experience of any of these? It occurs to me
that if 3 is the case, then you really have no choice but to buy an
iphone through Telstra if the free wifi is a big selling point, but
if one or 2 is the case then it may be possible just to have an
applstore iphone, a Telstra nextg/3g sim and the connection settings
to make it work?

I am not sure, but I imagine you need to have an iPhone Plan with
Telstra which includes Data to be able to access the Telstra Wireless
Hot Spots for FREE.

Cheers,
Ronni

iPhone-So who's got the best iPhone deal? Appl e blocking Push on unlocked iPhones

2009-07-15 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi iPhone 3G 3G S people,

More information overload for us to wade through and make sense of ;-)

I posted this back on 13th July:

3 announces iPhone pricing:
Aside from the usual array of 24-month plans, 3 is giving customers
on existing plans the option of taking up an iPhone for an
additional cost of $35, $40 or $45 per month, depending on the model.

In addition, 3 is offering the iPhone on a prepaid basis. Customers
choosing this option will have to outlay $759 upfront for the iPhone
3G 8GB, $929 for the iPhone 3GS 16GB and $1129 for the iPhone 3GS
32GB.
3 does not plan to charge customers extra for using their iPhones as
an external modem and tethering them to a computer.

http://www.theage.com.au/digital-life/mobiles/3-announces-iphone-pricing-20090713-dij7.html

Now there is more:

Three releases iPhone 3GS pricing - so who's got the best iPhone deal?
http://www.smartcompany.com.au/telecommunications/20090714-three-releases-iphone-3gs-pricing-we-compare-other-telcos-for-best-plan.html

Apple blocking push on unlocked iPhones:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10286406-37.html

Czech developer PoweryBase is claiming that Apple is intentionally
blocking push notifications to users of unlocked iPhones.
PoweryBase, makers of several applications that use Apple's push
notification service, said 80 percent of its customer support
complaints are coming from a very small minority of its customers. All
of these customers are using unlocked iPhones.
The developer explains that when a push application requests an ID
from the Apple server, the iPhone receives a unique token. Once the
token is received, push notifications proceed as you would expect. The
process only takes a few seconds to complete.
However, PoweryBase says on unlocked phones they have seen the Apple
server not respond at all. This just leaves the user's app in limbo
until it times out.

Ronni

Re: iPhone-So who's got the best iPhone deal? Apple blocking Push on unlocked iPhones

2009-07-15 Thread Mike Murray

Hi Ronni and iPhoners

It's getting complicated isn't it?

I got my iPhone 3GS last week and have put the SIM into it from my old
Nokia and it works perfectly. Obviously not at NextG speeds but so far
the Telstra normal service seems to drive the GPS/maps app perfectly
well. Phone calls are fine and it's great as a Wifi tool, locking onto
networks without any problem, including the one at home.

One of the first apps I downloaded was Reunion, the great genealogy
program for Macs which now has an iPhone version. It means I can sync
client files onto the iPhone and go off and do research if I need to.

I haven't tried the Telstra hotspots, but there aren't all that many
in Perth.

I plan over time to try out various SIMS - there doesn't seem to be
much recognition by the telcos that there must be a significant number
of unlocked phones out there...

Cheers
Mike

Hi Chris

I'm afraid a replacement battery is not automatic inside a 3 year
warranty. Apple may well claim normal wear and tear as the 300 cycles
is not guaranteed. Mine had 226 cycles and I had to buy a new one.
Needless to say it only has 5 on it now as I am more aware. Still its
worth a try

Mike

Sorry to pimp my own work, but have you seen my iPhone app, Instaviz?
You can do charts, mind maps and such just by sketching the shapes and
linking them up. It sounds like an ideal fit for drawing family trees
and such. And you'd be supporting quality local iPhone development :-)

Hi Ronni and iPhoners

It's getting complicated isn't it?

I got my iPhone 3GS last week and have put the SIM into it from my

so far the Telstra normal service seems to drive the GPS/maps app
perfectly well. Phone calls are fine and it's great as a Wifi tool,
locking onto networks without any problem, including the one at home.

One of the first apps I downloaded was Reunion, the great genealogy
program for Macs which now has an iPhone version. It means I can
sync client files onto the iPhone and go off and do research if I
need to.

I haven't tried the Telstra hotspots, but there aren't all that many
in Perth.

I plan over time to try out various SIMS - there doesn't seem to be
much recognition by the telcos that there must be a significant
number of unlocked phones out there...

Re: Macbook battery

2009-07-15 Thread Stuart Evans

Hi Chris (and Daniel),

We are (or should be) listed as a service provider in Bunbury. We have a
small service office in Rose Street, but not a retail store. We primarily
work in the education sector throughout the Bunbury area and SouthWest.
Our technician is also providing service to customers through Probyte.
At the moment he is not available as he is attending to family matters over
east. We are looking at a second technician for Bunbury, who can also
provide Windows support to schools (so if anyone knows someone who wants a
job in Bunbury we're looking please call).

The only other option is to send it to Perth to one of the service centres
or to our office in Albany. We have a 2-3 day turnaround generally. Feel
free to call Raymond in our Albany store to discuss the problem as we have
replaced quite a few batteries like this. On the flip side, we've also had
to reject some dependant on age and cycles.

NB: BigPond Mobile for iPhone content is available when your iPhone is
connected to the Telstra Next GT network, but is not available when
accessing the internet via a WiFi hotspot.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi, I currently have a Telstra sim and number, I am quite happy with
my plan ( partly because work pays for it, and partly because of the
domestic and international coverage from Telstra). I would like to
buy an iphone from the apple store but have one burning question

1/. If I use a Telstra sim and an iphone, will I still get access to
 Telstra wifi spots for free

Does anyone know the answer to this?
