Re: Networked computers not showing in Finder?

2009-11-11 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi Brian,

First, if the computer isn't showing in the sidebare, go to the finder
preferences and in the sidebar pane make sure you have got the shared
options (eg connected servers) ticked.

Another way to connect, if the computer isn't showing in the sidebar, is to
go to the finder "GO" menu and select "Connect to Server" when you get the
dialog box then:

1) The other computer may be showing under the favourites or recent servers
(then select and click "Connect") - or

2) Try clicking the "Browse" button to see if the other computer shows up
(then select and click "Connect") - or

3) If browse isn't working try directly inputting the server address of the
other computer directly and then clicking "Connect"

To check the server address of either computer go to the "Network" pane of
their System Preferences (you can also see the address in the "Sharing" pane
of the System Preferences).

Also remember that even when you are connected for sharing, you actual file
access will depend on:

- Whether you are connected as the same user
- Whether you are connected as an administrator
- Which folders you have shared

Try the above and, if still having problems, report back with any error
messages from step 3 above.

The other thing to do to isolate whether the problem is with your wireless
network or sharing set-up is to directly connect the two machines and check
that the sharing is all working OK over ethernet (since one of the machines
is a laptop this should be easy).

Yes, Brian it should show up in the side bar & you either click to connect or
in Finder - Under GO in Menu Bar > Connect to Server.

What I'm confused about is your comment "AirPort status on the PB is showing
'computer-to-computer' on the iMAC 'On'."
I thought you were sharing over the same Airport Network, but by that comment
you have the PB not connected to your Airport Network but to a
"Computer-to-computer" Network?

All my computers are connected to my Wireless Network & I can connect & share
files with all computers.

Hi Brian,

A couple of things you could check.
1. In Finder > Preferences - General. Do you have selected under

Yes

2. In System Preferences > Sharing - File Sharing click on the

and Yes

I seem to remember the remote computer showed up in the side bar of
the Finder and I needed to click Connect is this correct?

All working now, I suspect a loose cable may be the culprit,

Ronni, I have run repair permissions a few times now and it still takes a few
minutes, but your right nowhere near the reported 57 mins.

Hi Hugh,

If "Repair Permissions" is going to take 57 mins in OS X 10.6.2 as you say
above ... I don't think you have repaired permissions for a long time ;-)
I was surprised how much faster "Repair Permissions" was on my computers after
the OS X 10.6.2 update installed. Only took a few minutes 3-5 mins.

If after repairing permissions your computer is still not recognising the FW
Drives, you could try this:

When you did your "simple diagnostics", did you following these steps?
Especially 1 & 3?

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Disconnect all FireWire devices and all other cables, except the
keyboard and mouse cable(s).
3. Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5
minutes.
4. Plug the computer back in and turn it on.
5. Reconnect the FireWire device(s) (one at a time if there is more than
one) and test.
Test with each FireWire port if you have more than one.

Sometimes that is enough to get the Firewire Ports working again.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Eye TV burning

2009-11-11 Thread F.W. Hänel

Hello all,

Just a further query regarding EyeTV .
Which file format should be used when exporting an EyeTV recording (before
burning it to DVD)
1. For best picture quality when watching the DVD on a computer ?
2. For making it watchable on any DVD player AND computer ?
3. For fitting the most content on a DVD ?

Thanks ,

Walter

Re: Eye TV burning

2009-11-11 Thread Ray Forma

Alex,

1 Use EyeTV to edit away the stuff before, after, and in (adverts)
the material you want to keep.

2 Save and close edited material.

3 Open Toast and compose DVD, Don't worry if it indicates you will
need more than one DVD. Create DVDs up to 3 hrs, but note that the
final product will have quality reduced if the total content is more
than about 90 min.

4 Save you new DVD as a Disk image, using the menu File/Save as Disk Image...

5 Swich to Copy/Image File in Toast, or double click on the image
file that you recently saved

6 Make sure that you have enabled 'Fit to DVD video compresson'

7 Hit the burn button. You should then see Toast first compressing
the content, then burning it.

8 The above results in just enough compression to produce a totally
full normal DVD.

9 Phone if you still have problems.

I have been burning shows recorded with EyeTV by hitting the Toast
button (using Toast Titanium 7.1.3). This only works for shows
under 1.5 hrs in duration. I believe I have to export to another
format to be able to fit the longer shows onto a DVD.

Can someone please inform as to the best format to use so that it
can play on a standard DVD player? Also, do I export and save to
hard drive and then burn in a second step? Does this take an
extraordinarily long time?

Many thanks for your assistance,

Cheers, Alex
