Photo Scanner

2009-11-30 Thread Gordon Wilson

I have about 150 Kodachrome 35mm slides to digitise and add to iPhoto.
The best machine seems to be the Epson V700 because 12 slides can be done at
once and from the reviews, results are quick and first class.
I need a flat bed scanner for other work so I don't want a pure photo scanner.
It comes with Photoshop Elements 6, (no good for 10.6.2) and 10.3.8 or later
software.
Can anyone comment on this machine and will it work ok with 10.6.2.
Many thanks,
Gordon Wilson

Setting up a wireless network

2009-11-30 Thread Severin Crisp

I am helping my son set up a new LAN at home. Currently he has a
desktop PC with a USB printer and an HP (work) laptop with wireless
connectivity. He has a D-Link G604T wireless router/modem and which
has 4 ethernet ports. He is looking to add a MacBook and an iMac and
to purchase a printer/scanner. He will phase out the desktop PC
except for occasional necessary Windows tasks like eTax.
The D-Link does not have a USB printer port but I see that printer/
scanner units are available with Wifi connectivity (Epson TX550W for
example). Would the best way to go be to invest in Airport Express/
Extreme and get a non-wifi printer/scanner and use the printer
facility to share among all units. This would make the wifi bit of
the D-Link redundant but would not require a wireless enabled
printer. Clearly the iMac and PC will be deskbound and can connect to
the printer by ethernet (or wireless for the iMac).
My own system is centred around an Airport Extreme and a DSL-504
router/modem and I share a laser printer among three computers very
happily, including a wireless MacBook.

Are there issues with printer/scanner units on this sort of setup?
Words of wisdom will be welcomed.

OS X 10.5 - Lexmark x2530

2009-11-30 Thread David Moyle

Afternoon,

I am just chasing some advice, once again! I've sent so many WAMUG e-mails
recently!

At work we've got a staff member with a Lexmark x2530 printer. We are trying to
use it on a Mac OS X 10.5.8 MacBook Pro. This has been working previously but
stopped working and we've been unable to get it working again.

On the Lexmark website they've only got 10.6 drivers, no 10.5 anymore? (When we
attempt to install the 10.6 drivers it stops telling us of the difference.
Grr...)
There is already a printer driver located on the computer, we've also tried
re-installing off the supplied CD but when ever we try to print from any
program it crashes the program. As soon as we remove the printer from the
computer it removes the crashing issue.

As a possible solution we also reset the CUPS system via the GUI in System
Preferences to no avail.

If there is any thoughts its appreciated!

Thanks,

David Moyle

Hi Severin,

I have not come across a printer/scanner unit that is
supported using Airport Express/Extreme, if anyone has had success, please do
share. If it were to work I would say it would only be printing and not
scanning that would work.
I have seen a couple of HP printer/scanner units with built in wifi work quite
well, no experience with Epson though.

Hi Steven,

I've been playing around with these all year while looking for a viable
option to hold online meetings for (GMUG) Originally I was a big fan of Cisco's

the place and sometimes confusing. So I decided to give
GoToMeetinghttp://www.gotomeeting.com/and
GoToWebinar http://www.gotomeeting.com/ from Citrix
Onlinehttps://www.citrixonline.com/ a
go I much prefer their product is a lot cleaner and easier to use.

I would give all three products are go to see which one best fits your needs
they should all offer a free trial.

When signing up for a trial of GoToMeeting Use this link as you get a longer
trial Then 30 days http://www.gotomeeting.com/s/referral Also when signing
up for GoToMeeting and GoToWebinar When you get to the section about needing
a credit card if you just closed the Webpage will e-mail you in 12 hours
letting you know that you can try their products without a credit card

Re: Setting up a wireless network

2009-11-30 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Severin,

If you get one the Epson Multi Function Wireless Network Ready Printers you
can Print / Scan/Copy without any cables.
They have a wireless chip inside and you setup their 802.11b/g WiFi Network
then share the printer.

I have an Epson TX700W and it only has a power cable connected to it and it is
shared by 4 computers that are connected wirelessly to my Airport Networks ...
I have 2 Networks one Airport Extreme 802.11n Only (5GHz), and one Airport
Express 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible).

http://www.epson.com.au/products/multifunctional/stylusTX700W.asp

The TX800FW is a newer model.
http://www.epson.com.au/products/multifunctional/stylusTX800FW.asp

I'm not sure on the Epson TX550W, but I notice it's specifications list
NETWORKING 802.11b/g WiFi.

I think Daniel Kerr has the latest model of these MF Wireless Network Printers.
He might comment on them if he can find the time as I know he is run off his
little feet at the moment, and very sleep deprived.

The other Multifunction Printers only print wirelessly, you need to connect
them to your computer to scan as Michael has already mentioned.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Setting up a wireless network

2009-11-30 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi Severin, Michael

From memory, the thing about Airport Express is that for non-network enabled
printers, printer/scanners etc only basic printing is supported.

Eg for my canon IP4000, if plugged in via USB I can launch the printer
utility and check ink levels, clean nozzles etc - however if set up as a
wireless printer (plugged into the Airport Express) I can print just fine
but can't perform these maintenance functions.

I seem to remember previous posts relating to printer scanners saying that
the scanning wasn't supported via the Airport Express unless the drivers
covered this via the network - so, for example, a network printer/scanner
with ethernet but no built-in wireless WOULD work wirelessly via an Airport
Express because it had the drivers for network scanning.

I'm going on memory here so you might want to check the archives to confirm.

I guess, it is becoming less relevant now since on consumer level machines
wireless now tends to be more common than ethernet.

Cheers

Presented with the usual overload of information via a web search, has anyone
already had good experience with any free web conferencing or webinar
solutions on the Mac? I need to present what I'm doing on my screen to
multiple other parties, these other parties using a variety of Mac and
 Windows platforms.

I know of Skype screen share, however it seems that Skype is limited to
sharing your screen with only one other party, besides I've found Skype
screen share to be lacking when it comes to overall performance and
transmission delays of the screen activity. I need voice to be carried at the
same time as what's on my screen.

 Thankful for any tips.

What's happening here - IMAP account versus MailMessages folder

2009-11-30 Thread Steven Knowles

I have an IMAP account set up, in which were quite a few messages.

A 3rd party also accesses this same IMAP account, and this 3rd party
inadvertently deleted all of the messages. The account synchronised at my end,
and so my view is also empty.

However, if I check the folder at Library Mail
imap-acco...@domain.com@mail.domain.com INBOX.imapmbox Messages, it's full
of emlx messages. Intuitively I would have thought such a folder would be
empty, in line with the empty IMAP account.

However, there is another folder - Library Mail
imap-acco...@domain.com@mail.domain.com INBOX, but in this folder the
subfolders are only Apple Mail To Do.imapmbox, Deleted Messages.imapmbox,
Drafts.imapmbox, Sent.imapmbox, Trash.imapmbox.

With a view to recovering the lost messages which were in the IMAP account,
which folder is the correct one to be looking in? I have all backing up to Time
Capsule, so recovery shouldn't be a problem as the prior to deletion of the
messages, the IMAP account had been sitting stagnant for a while. But I want to
be sure I'm looking in the right place.

Also, once I know which is the right place to find the deleted messages, what
do I drag and where do I drop?

Many thanks, Steven

Hi Justin,

I think this problem is usually when you set-up the new computer
with a user account that is not exactly the same as on the old
machine – the folders with the red negative file are what you see if
you try and look at another user’s folders.

If you used migration assistant to migrate user folders then you
should have the same user accounts as the old machine – and so need
to log into them using the (old) usernames and passwords.

If you just use the default mac options when first setting up a new
machine then that all usually happens pretty seamlessly.

If you first set-up the new machine with a fresh owners account and
then use migration assistant to bring things (other user accounts/
folders) over then you can run into problems if you are not exactly
clear how the accounts are defined and set-up.

Personally, I have several different computers (a couple of iMacs
and a laptop) each has user accounts for both myself and my spouse.
As a result I have need to transfer the user accounts around from
time to time – so what I do is just set-up a fresh owner account
(called computer admin or some such thing) on each machine at first
set-up and everytime I do a fresh system install – these accounts
just stay as admin accounts with no personal data etc – then I can
migrate user accounts from machine to machine as I see fit – the
admin accounts never get migrated and so variations in the admin
account name/details are not important.

Note that this approach will not suit many people – you need to be
careful to keep track of what is current in any user account from
machine to machine but we each tend to use one of the iMacs as out
personal computer and then just bring the laptop up to speed for the
occasional trip away – if we used the laptop more often I would look
to just set-up some form of user folder synchronisation (as
discussed in many WAMUG postings).

However, if you are just migrating successively from an old machine
to a new machine, you are probably best just going the simple Apple
route and letting the set-up assistant take care of everything.

If you are not sure exactly what you have done in terms of setting
up new users and migrating old ones over then, providing that all
the info is still on the old machine and you haven’t yet started
creating new data on the new machine, you might be best just
starting again – restore the new machine using the disk(s) provided
and then on first start-up let the initial set-up bring everything
over from the old machine.

You should repair permissions on the old machine before you start
and, of course, it goes without saying that you should have back-ups
of everything before you start!

Also, there have been many previous WAMUG postings by Ronni and
other WAMUG gurus (much more experienced and knowledgeable than
myself) covering tips precautions covering system installations,
updates, migrations etc – check out the archives.

However, if I check the folder at Library Mail
 imap-acco...@domain.com@mail.domain.com INBOX.imapmbox Messages, it's
full of emlx messages. Intuitively I would have thought such a folder would
be empty, in line with the empty IMAP account.

However, there is another folder - Library Mail
imap-acco...@domain.com@mail.domain.com INBOX, but in this folder the
subfolders are only Apple Mail To Do.imapmbox, Deleted Messages.imapmbox,
 Drafts.imapmbox, Sent.imapmbox, Trash.imapmbox.

With a view to recovering the lost messages which were in the IMAP account,
which folder is the correct one to be looking in? I have all backing up to
Time Capsule, so recovery shouldn't be a problem as the prior to deletion of
the messages, the IMAP account had been sitting stagnant for a while. But I
want to be sure I'm looking in the right place.

Also, once I know which is the right place to find the deleted messages, what
do I drag and where do I drop?

 Many thanks, Steven

Hi Steven,

I don't know how you have your IMAP Account setup to synchronize.
Do you have it Automatically Synchronize Changed Mailboxes in the Advanced tab
of your IMAP account?
Or do you synchronize messages manually?

Have you tried choosing Mailbox: Synchronize: Account Name (or Mailbox:
Synchronize All Accounts).

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: What's happening here - IMAP account versus MailMessages folder

Both the INBOX and INBOX.imapmbox folder are relevant. One latter
contains the INBOX messages, the former contains the folders that are
nested within the INBOX. (It won't be like this or everyone...it
depends on the underlying setup of the brand of IMAP server.)

I'd suggest the reason the .emlx files are still there because
basically it is a cache, and Apple Mail hasn't yet 'purged' the cache.
If you synchronised the account, the .emlx files would probably
disappear to match the server.

You are in a somewhat tricky situation, because you need to convince
the server that the messages are not deleted, even though the server's
index says those message IDs have been deleted. Restoring from backup
*might* work, or on the other hand it could fail if the server will
see the restored message IDs as 'zombies' and instructs Apple Mail to
delete them again. You may find that you have to restore from backup
into a folder on your Desktop, then 'Import' into Mail, then drag
across from the Import folder to the IMAP account, to basically tell
the server to add all the old messages as though they were new
messages. But I'm just speculating. Wait for someone else with more
definitive information (or check on Google). I've never had this
problem and haven't tested it out.

James

On a completely unrelated question, does anyone know if it it's
possible to send files and sync the iPhone to a Mac with blue tooth? I
had a look online and found lots of information saying it couldn't be
done, I'm not sure if there are any apps been released to allow it

and expected it to work with my Mac as well as my Sony Ericsson only

As Ronda has pointed out, file Transfer via Bluetooth on the iPhone is not
supported. Wireless and/or USB are the technologies of choice, and there are
all sorts of options out there to allow file transfers to and from the iPhone.
Apart from the obvious iTunes, there are programs like 1Password, Bento and
other dedicated software solutions which allow seamless wireless syncing of
their data files, to all-purpose applications like PhoneView from
http://www.ecam.com which works with USB.

You may not need it, but if you use a template-driven web site kit like Sandvox
or RapidWeaver which allows the creation of pages such as Contact Forms where
visitors can send a message from the page itself, some form of background
scripting is required on the web server to support these. One of the most
popular scripting languages these days is php, and software such as RapidWeaver
relies on it being available. MobileMe does not provide this.
