Shared tab missing

2010-01-13 Thread Pedro

Evening all,

While trying to set up iTune sharing with our new iMac I have noticed that the
shared tab in the finder is missing on both the iMac and MacBook.
I have been into Finder preferences and ticked all three shared boxes and
nothing happens . Have tried unticking/ticking other boxes and they disappear
and appear
as they should.

Any help gratefully received

cheers

Pedro

Evening Pedro,

You need to enable Sharing in iTunes, not Finder.

From memory it will only show the Shared menu item if it does find a shared
library.

Are you sharing just itunes or other files? Are you sharing both
machines' libraries or just one?

Have you turned on file sharing in system preferences sharing on the
machine you want to share?

Re: Shared tab missing

2010-01-13 Thread Pedro

Hi Guys

Thank you for the prompt reply.

I am not worried about the iTunes part at the moment ,I will sort that out
later...

It's the shared tab in finder that has gone missing is the main concern . Both
the iMac and MacBook
are on the same network (netgear wireless) using AirPort

I have been into System Preferences and turned on sharing on both computers

Re: Shared tab missing

2010-01-13 Thread James Devenish

Hi Pedro,

For a Mac to show 'Shared' in the Finder's sidebar, there must be at
least two computers correctly operating on the same network. This is
because Shared is hidden for solo computers. Your computers seem to
think they are solo, and a failure in merely one of the pair would
cause this to happen.

You should double-check that both computer are truly connected to the
same wireless access point. (E.g,., it's possible for one of them to
have latched onto a neighbour's wireless by mistake.) Secondly,
Bonjour must be working on both computers. Bonjour is essential for
automatic Sharing in both the Finder and iTunes. So just in case
Bonjour has failed, you should restart both computers (reboot one of
them about 10 seconds after the other, to be sure, and then check
their Airport network names in the Network System Preferences).

I'm pretty sure that the 'Shared' sidebar should be visible in the
Finder even if File Sharing is turned off.

Re: Shared tab missing

2010-01-13 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Pedro,

Try trashing the Finder preference file and restarting
(com.apple.finder.plist).
Then re-enter your personal finder preferences.

The file is located in your home folder (abbreviated ~).
Go to ~librarypreferences and drag com.apple.finder.plist to the trash.

OS X will rebuild the preference file with default values. If you wish to
change them, (while in finder) go to the menu bar and click on preferences
(from the drop down menu).

Greetings Peter

Not sure if your problems are the same as mine -

I am having problems with Magic Mouse whereby it stopped doing all the extra
things like scrolling and became just an 'ordinary mouse'. Also looking at
the System Preferences Mouse, I no longer got the video showing how to use the
Magic Mouse, instead it just showed ordinary mouse setups. After three
lengthy phone calls with Apple Support, the third person I spoke with suggested
deleting the bluetooth plist in MacIntosh HD LibraryPreferences and
restarting computer. The Magic Mouse then works properly however, this
annoying fix needs to be done every time I shut down and restart the computer.
I am about to speak with Apple again to see if there is a proper, permanent
fix for it.

Hi Peter,

Without knowing how you setup your Time Capsule Wireless Network
originally.

I'm assuming you followed the Instructions that came with Time Capsule
to setup a Dual Band Network with WPA2 encryption.

To change the Wireless Mode:

1. Open Airport Utility

2. Double click your Time Capsule Network (in Left Column)

3. Then click the Wireless button

4. Have Allow this network to be extended ticked

5. Radio Mode: what do you have selected? ... is it Automatic?

Radio Mode: You can change it to 802.11n only (5 GHZ - 802.11b/g/n
... you might have to hold Option click to display this.

6. Radio Channel Selection: Automatic

Click Update, and wait until your Time Capsule restarts and appears in
Airport Utility.

Then check if your MacBook is connecting to the 802.11n ... Hold down
the option key on your keyboard while you click the fan shaped Airport
icon at the top of your screen. It should now be PHY Mode: 802.11n

Cheers,

Ronni

Hi Peter,

You have the new iTB Time Capsule which is a Dual Band (5GHz/2.4GHz),
so your MacBook should be connecting to the faster n band.

You probably setup yas Automatic Radio Mode.

To verify if your MacBook is connecting to the faster n band:

Hold down the option key on your keyboard while you click the fan
shaped Airport icon at the top of your screen.

Look for Transmit Rate.

A value of 54 indicates that the network is operating at g level
speeds. 70-80 and up indicates that you are at faster n speeds.

My MacBook Pro Transmit Rate is always around 270.

Hi Peter,

Sometimes just Quit Airport Utility if it doesn't find TC, then Open Time
Capsule again and see if it Time Capsule is then showing.

You certainly shouldn't have to be sitting near to Time Capsule and you don't
need to connect by Ethernet once you have setup your Network.
You can make changes to the Network through Airport Utility over wireless.

 Hi Peter,

Without knowing how you setup your Time Capsule Wireless Network originally.
I'm assuming you followed the Instructions that came with Time Capsule to
setup a Dual Band Network with WPA2 encryption.

 To change the Wireless Mode:
 1. Open Airport Utility
 2. Double click your Time Capsule Network (in Left Column)
 3. Then click the Wireless button
 4. Have Allow this network to be extended ticked
 5. Radio Mode: what do you have selected? ... is it Automatic?
Radio Mode: You can change it to 802.11n only (5 GHZ - 802.11b/g/n ...
you might have to hold Option click to display this.
 6. Radio Channel Selection: Automatic

Click Update, and wait until your Time Capsule restarts and appears in
 Airport Utility.

Then check if your MacBook is connecting to the 802.11n ... Hold down the
option key on your keyboard while you click the fan shaped Airport icon at
the top of your screen. It should now be PHY Mode: 802.11n

 Hi Peter,

You have the new iTB Time Capsule which is a Dual Band (5GHz/2.4GHz), so
your MacBook should be connecting to the faster n band.
You probably setup yas Automatic Radio Mode.

To verify if your MacBook is connecting to the faster n band:
Hold down the option key on your keyboard while you click the fan shaped
Airport icon at the top of your screen.
 Look for Transmit Rate.
A value of 54 indicates that the network is operating at g level speeds.
70-80 and up indicates that you are at faster n speeds.

You certainly shouldn't have to be sitting near to Time Capsule and you don't
need to connect by Ethernet once you have setup your Network.
You can make changes to the Network through Airport Utility over wireless.

Re: Shared tab missing

2010-01-13 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Pedro,

Hmmm weird behaviour with your Finder sidebar.
This sounds silly, but, give it a try:

1. Uncheck all the selections under Shared in Preferences.
See what happens ...

2. If the Shared option appears, then re-check all the options under Shared
in the Finder Preferences.
3. Then see if Shared stays in the Finder sidebar.

Cheers,
Ronni
PS. I have to use Cruise Control when I'm driving in the country, even then
Tigger tries to go over the selected speed

Re: Shared tab missing

2010-01-13 Thread Pedro

Hi Ronni

Tried that , still no go. Weird thing is it is both the new iMac that I got
from Daniel a little while ago and the MacBook that is just on 2 years old.

I tried unchecking the places boxes and places disappeared as it should and
when I check the boxes it reappeared as it should. Unfortunately it doesn't
work for shared

cheers

Pedro

PS Love cruise control, has saved me a small fortune

Re: Shared tab missing

2010-01-13 Thread Pedro

Aargh I,m an idiot

I just answered my own question in that last post. Tried to figure out why it
is happening to both computers at the same time. What's common to both, the
modem, did a reboot of the netgear and bingo!! SHARED tab appeared on both
just like magic.

I love this list, a big thank you to Ronnie and all that helped. I off to cool

Re: Shared tab missing

2010-01-13 Thread Ronda Brown

Ok Pedro,

Shared is only present in the sidebar if you have any connected severs or any
bonjour computers on your local network.
If none of these are available the Shared section will disappear.
 It will reappear when needed.

So, as James suggested yesterday, somehow your iMac MacBook are either not
connected to the same Network, or sharing is not setup correctly.

How is your Wireless Network setup, are you using the wireless through an
Airport Extreme or Express or are you just using an ADSL Wireless Modem/Router?

Why I'm asking this, is if your have Wireless enabled on an ADSL Modem as
well as on an Airport Extreme/Express/Time Capsule it will cause problems.
You should disable wireless on the ADSL wireless Modem and just use an Airport
hardware to setup an Airport Wireless Network.

Has this problem only happened after ?? Have you been able to Share with
these two computers before on your Network?

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Shared tab missing

2010-01-13 Thread Pedro

Hi Ronni

The network is set up through a Netgear ADSL2+ wireless modem/router.
No Airport Extreme/Express/Time Capsule is in place and both the iMac and
MacBook access the internet wirelessly through it.

I looked at what James said yesterday and as both are able to access the
internet and all the right shared boxes are ticked I was stumped as to why they
could not see each other. It was not until I rebooted the modem that all is
working fine. My nearest neighbour is about half a kilometre away so no other
network would cause trouble either.

iTunes sharing is also working fine and Alison is now enjoying Aretha Franklin
on her new iMac

Again thank you everyone for their input

cheers

Pedro
