Reunion software package

2010-08-25 Thread Graeme Winters

Is there anyone within the WAMUG group using Reunion for Mac
This is a family tree package designed specifically for the Mac

My current issue is this
Having entered data for some 7 families or over 650 names, I then opted to
print a pedigree chart for my youngest grandchild
This printed chart covers 7 generations and when printed covers 12 A4 sheets.
In this format the chart is quite readable although it could be reduced in size
a little.
I then taped and joined the 12 pages into an impressive chart , however the
joins were not good and I had to do much trimming to make the chart at all
reasonable in appearance.

Thinking that I could get a better job done by Office Works ( whose printing
costs seem to be better than most ) Office Works were unable to open the
.boxchart file

I then tried saving this as a pdf file but the system would only allow a
pdf.boxchart suffix
Again the printer could not open the file

When I come to print a descendants chart I see that I will have the same
problem. Again this will be up to 7 generations but the chart will spread both
north and south as well as east and west

Does anyone have any experience with Reunion?

Re: Reunion software package

2010-08-25 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Graeme,

Does the Cascading Pedigree give you what you want?
From the Reunion menu bar at the top of your display go to Create, and near
the bottom of the popup list click on Cascading Pedigree.

Pull down the menu, Createthen click on Pedigree chart.
You can then choose how many generations you want to show on the chart.
Then pull down the Tree Menu---to orientation.
You will have a choice of Waterfall, Left to Right, Right to Left, Top to
Bottom, etc.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Graeme

After you have created the chart, whilst the chart is the active window, choose
File Save Graphic File ... (rather than File Save As, which you appear to
have done, which gives you the boxchart suffix).

From the window which displays, choose pdf as the file format, then click Save.
This should then generate your pdf file.

You probably know, but in case not the makers of Reunion have a helpful forum

Re: Reunion software package

2010-08-25 Thread Graeme Winters
Thank you for your comment Stephen
I was using Family Tree Maker 2006 prior to August 2010 but was torn between
persevering with this old package, updating FTM or switching to Reunion.
I made the change after only a brief test and am yet to really get to try the
many options available
Several reasons why I chose Reunion
Our Winters genealogy web site is run by a cousin in UK who is also using
Reunion so I felt the transfer of my data to him via a box file would make
things easier at his end
Our current web site caters for 4 branches of the family to date and am looking
to increase the branches to 10 with my local data
FTM is not designed for the Mac although it may be in the future

With all this activity it is just as well I am in the retired category

Thanks again Stephen

Re: Reunion software package

2010-08-25 Thread Steven Knowles
I haven't reviewed anything else extensively, but in defence of Reunion, I
think report and chart creation is one of its better features. The flexibility
is endless, with Mac-like drag drop functionality within the charts. Drag
individual person boxes to wherever you like, and the charts will automatically
adjust. Auto include whatever data you like, whatever images you like. It's
really quite feature rich.

One of the less obvious features you may not have come across is the ability to
scale the report to a size which fits a single page (unless of course you're
converting to a graphic file, as per my earlier message). From within a report
window, go File Page Setup. Select your Paper Size, then change the Settings
field to Reunion. You will then see a suggestion as what percentage you need to
scale the report by, for either Portrait or Landscape, in order that it fits a
single page. (You're also given the option here to move the individual person
boxes away from page breaks if printing a report which will exceed one page.)
Make a note of the given percentage, then change the Settings field back to
Page Attributes, and change the Scale accordingly.

TopTenREVIEWS gives Reunion the highest ranking for Output Formats, ranking
significantly ahead of 5 other products for the Mac. consumersearch rate it
best genealogy software for the Mac. MacGenealogist also gives Reunion the
highest ranking for charting and reporting.

Reunion is iPhone compatible to boot.

Cheers, Steven

Filemaker Pro upgrades

If you are a user of Filemaker Pro and have not upgraded for a while, you
should be aware that as from 23 September 2010, Filemaker is discontinuing both

Hi Graeme

I've come in late to this discussion. Here's some thoughts...

Sharing with another Reunion user...send him the reunion file, not a boxchart
(not sure what you meant by 'box file').
Others have mentioned the great features of Reunion, it's certainly worth
persevering with.
Reunion have just announced an iPad version (it's already available on the
iPhone)
Family Tree Maker will be available for the Mac later this year.
Cheers

 Bill

Inasmuch as I generally recommend using the latest version of your
mission-critical software, my answer would be Yes. However, if you're not reall
in the position of a dedicated Filemaker developer, or your current solution
doing everything you want, Filemaker 10 is fine. There are several significant
improvements in Filemaker 11 even for the user however, most notably being
Saved Finds, a new Inspector palette, a new Quick Find field (performs a
Google-like search on you entire database in the one field) and a new Quick
Reports tool in Table View. Are are many more improvements under hood as well,
though many of them are refinements of features introduced in Filemaker 10. You
can go to http://www.filemaker.com.au for full details.

The really big thing with Filemaker 11 is that it s now a full Cocoa-based
application. This has had an affect on the way some long-standing features
work, but by and large it's the same package you're used to.

Re: Reunion software package

2010-08-25 Thread Adrian Skehan
Good morning all,

I have tried a few genealogical apps over the last 20 odd years and I found
they all record the data and in some case they have interesting but useless
gimmicks, however, in the long run I have also concluded that Reunion is by far
the most comprehensive of of them all pretty much in all respects. The iPhone
App is brilliant for on the spot referencing your data and particularly for
updating and/or adding new data on the run, its hardly necessary for me to cart
the MacBook Pro around with me when we are traveling.

Mobileme account with entourage

2010-08-25 Thread William Crabb

I've set up a mobileme account to do the 60day free trial. However, I'm
having a problem as I use ozemail.com.au as my email address, and can't sync
that to mobile me. Am I able to use this address with mobileme, or do I have
to use a .mac or .me email address? If I can't use my usual email address
with mobileme, is there another IMAP that supports it?

Hello William,

No, you sync your MobileMe Email account.
Your MobileMe membership includes one or more email addresses (using the format
member-n...@me.com or member-n...@mac.com).

MobileMe is a collection of online services— some of which you can use on their
own, and some of which add capabilities to your Mac, Windows PC, iPhone, or
iPod touch.
