Re: Apple ID log in

2015-10-21 Thread Brian Risbey
Hi Ronni

I went through your checklist and followed the links for the further
instructions, no change. Log-on steill ‘hang’ applications become unresponsive,
requiring ‘force quit’.
I logged onto Appleid via Safari to ensure I have my details correct, they
were.
Might contact the Genius Bar or Apple directly.
Thank you again for your suggestions.

New Macbook

2015-10-21 Thread Rob Phillips

Hi everyone

I'm a little bit confused/annoyed.

I bought my 15" Macbook pro (2.6 GHz I7 4 core, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD) late
in 2012.

Since my 3 year Applecare is running out, and the machine is slowing
down, I'm looking at 'upgrading' to a new laptop.

I went in to Macworx today to see what was available. The top end
machine available was a 15" 3.1GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7, 16Gb RAM and
512GB 'storage'.

Most of the tech specs seem hardly changed - what happened to Moore's
Law? The price doesn't seem to have changed much either - if anything it
has gone up. What is even more disturbing is that the storage has
decreased from 1Tb to 512Gb - in the top-end machine! Are they serious???

My current system uses 650Gb - 350 Gb in photos. I can't upgrade without
splitting up photo libraries or deleting old photos. This is 1990s
thinking, and the Apple hardware is forcing me backwards. In almost 30
years of Mac use, I can't recall storage capacity going down.

What are my options for a portable machine which exceeds to capability
of my current machine? A few years ago I heard that it is possible to
install OSX on non Mac hardware. Is this still an option?

Hoping for some creative solutions...
Rob

Mail spelling

2015-10-21 Thread Severin Crisp
My wife’s Macbook (Lion 10.7.5) has changed it’s method of spell checking in
Mail. If a word is wrongly spelled it still puts a red underline when you come
off the word. But it no longer makes suggestions as you proceed with typing
the word. In Mail/Preferences/Composing spell check is set to “as I Type”, as
it always has been.
I suspect I should delete mail.plist in preferences but am loath to do this as
I am not sure what else will suffer.
Suggestions welcome!
Severin Crisp

I know that Lion is semi antique but that is the limit for this MacBook

Apple Releases OS X 10.11.1 to fix Microsoft Office 2016

2015-10-21 Thread Ronda Brown
Good morning WAMUG,

Apple Releases OS X 10.11.1 to fix Microsoft Office 2016

Apple has released OS X 10.11.1, with several bug fixes, most notably improved
compatibility with Microsoft Office 2016, which should hopefully fix the issues
those users have been experiencing, such as frequent app crashes. The 942 MB
update can be installed via Software Update, with standalone installers sure to
come later.

Apple says that OS X 10.11.1 also improves the stability of the installer when
updating to OS X El Capitan, addresses an issue that prevented certain Audio
Unit plug-ins from functioning properly, and improves VoiceOver reliability. If
you’ve seen JPEG images show up as gray or green boxes in Preview in El
Capitan, that’s now fixed too.

Users of Apple Mail will appreciate a fix for a bug that prevented the display
of certain messages and mailboxes; another fix resolves a situation where
outgoing server information could disappear.

The update also includes 150 new emoji characters, including tacos, burritos, a
bow and arrow, the “devil horn” hand gesture, and the much-requested “middle
finger” hand gesture. Tech Insider has a roundup for emoji junkies.

As always, OS X 10.11.1 includes a bunch of security updates: 37 to be precise.

Cheers,
Ronni

iOS 9.1 Improves Live Photos

2015-10-21 Thread Ronda Brown

iOS 9.1 Improves Live Photos

Alongside the 10.11.1 update to El Capitan and watchOS 2.0.1, Apple has updated
iOS to version 9.1, making only two feature changes. First, for those iPhone 6s
and iPhone 6s Plus users taking Live Photos, iOS now senses when you raise or
lower your iPhone and avoids recording those movements. That’s a useful change,
since many Live Photos were bookended by inadvertent movements.
Second, as with El Capitan’s update, iOS 9.1 includes 150 new emoji characters,
including various foods, family units, more faces, new animals, sports
equipment, weather, and more. You can finally convey that you’re nonplussed
about your archery match being postponed due to heavy fog, all without having
to think of any pesky words. Emoji junkies can find a roundup of the new images
at Tech Insider.

After those two changes, iOS 9.1 focuses on stability, resolving unspecified
problems in CarPlay, Music, Photos, Safari, and Search, and on performance,
reportedly improving responsiveness in the multitasking user interface. Other
bugs fixed could:

Cause Calendar to freeze in Month view
Prevent Game Center from launching
Inappropriately zoom content in some apps
Cause incorrect message counts for POP accounts
Prevent users from removing recent contacts from new email or messages
Fail to display some messages in Mail searches
Display a spurious gray bar in the body of audio messages
Cause activation errors on some cellular carriers
Prevent some apps from updating via the App Store
Security updates are included as well, with 24 vulnerabilities blocked.

At 246 MB for an iPhone 6, iOS 9.1 is probably most easily installed directly
on the device via Settings > General > Software Update, although it should also
work fine if installed via iTunes.

If you’re using one of the just-released iPhone 6s models and are taking Live
Photos, you’ll want to install iOS 9.1 sooner rather than later. Otherwise,
wait a few days and see what’s said about it online as the early adopters
report on their experiences.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Apple ID log in

2015-10-21 Thread Ronda Brown
Yes Brian,
I had this happen after a new logic board replaced in my 17-inch MacBook Pro.
Normally the technician changes the serial number to match the new logic board,
but some times they 'forget' to :)
Took it back to MacWorx and they 'flashed' the correct serial number.

You'll need to take it to an Apple Technician, or give Daniel a call he might
have the correct tool to do it for you.

My god the fog is thick down here I can hardly see to drive to my next job.
It was clear before 5am when I started work.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Ronni
Yes the serial number is blank.
This is an older 17" MacBookPro and has had various upgrades and repairs over
the last 6 years. Perhaps this is why the serial could be missing.

Hi Rob
Do you follow MacRumors.com?

While the 13-inch models moved to Intel's latest Broadwell processors, the
15-inch models continue to use the same Haswell processors from the previous
generation, as Intel has yet to release quad-core Broadwell processors suitable
for the larger model.

That is why it is very similar in specifications!
