RE: opening xml files

2012-02-26 Thread Cari Jansen
Basically you should be able to open an .xml file in any text editor or
popular web-editer, as xml is a text file.

TextWrangler is a freeware editor that supports XML syntax colours
(www.barebones.com)

or BBEdit (also barebones - commercial)
or Oxygen XML Author (commercial)

And if you have something like Adobe Dreamweaver that will open it as well
and support syntax colouring.

Good afternoon muggers

I have received an xml file from a collegue of mine (a result of an export

'open with' is applied.

Can someone please point me in the direction of an application and/or

Thanks very much for any advice on this

Hi Nichole,

Every iPod comes with a one-year limited warranty
http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/
As far as I'm aware the Warranty nor AppleCare will help with a broken
screen. Neither cover damage.

But, if your friend lives in, or near Perth, he/she could try taking it to
the Apple Store in Perth, they 'might' replace the screen at no charge.
Apple have been know to replace an iPod Touch screen at no charge on
occasion.

Otherwise somewhere around $150 for the replacement parts and repair.

InDesign User Group meeting Wed. 5 Oct.

2011-10-03 Thread Cari Jansen
(Sorry didn't mean to make this sound like an advert, but more speaking from
one UG to another ;-) )

Not sure if there are any InDesign users amongst WAMUG. But just in case...
there's an InDesign User Group meeting tomorrow.

Membership is free, but you must register to attend.

Tomorrow's meeting is a 'back to the basics' meeting, in which we go over
lots of tips and tricks in working with Paragraph and Character styles.
Great meeting to attend for beginners but also intermediate users who will
without a doubt pick up some cool tricks as well. ;-)

http://www.indesignusergroup.com/chapters/perth/events/1914/

We'll also be giving away a license of Adobe InDesign CS5.5 at the end of
the evening.

Look forward to seeing some of you there tomorrow :)

RE: Epub files

2011-07-31 Thread Cari Jansen
There are a number of Word to EPUB converters out there. Most do require
that the Word document is properly structured before converting. E.g. use
Heading 1, Heading 2 etc. consistently. Use Sections properly etc. Avoid
style sheet overrides. This ensures that your document is properly broken up
into separate html files based on sections, that correct tags are added to
the html. You might need to break open the generated EPUB and perform some
manual fixes to the html-files and css that's being generated to ensure it
all works in iBooks, e.g. such as setting cover image, metadata etc.

Hi everyone.

Is there any one in WAMUG who is knowledgeable about creating ePub files
that can be read on an iPad?

I have a MS Word (2011) document that I want to convert to ePub. I have
saved it as PDF and used Calibre to convert it but it comes out ok in parts
and totally mixed up in other parts.
Calibre says that PDF is the least preferred format to convert from, with
.lit as the best.

In order of decreasing preference: LIT, MOBI, EPUB, FB2, HTML, PRC, RTF,
PDB, TXT, PDF

I nave never heard of .lit - can .doc be converted to .lit on a Mac?

I have read Apple's support info on it using Pages. I could import the
document into Pages, and export it as an epub but I would have to reformat
it with Pages' limited formatting abilities. 260 pages is a lot to reformat.

Ideally I would like to export the Word version in a format suitable for
conversion to epub without loss of format. I can't find anything on the net
to do this except Calibre.

Failing to do all this, does anyone know of a firm that could produce an
epub book of about 260 pages from a MS Word 2011?

thanks

Lloyd

Stuart,

what exactly do you mean by 'the application that calculate dates'? I
presume this app has something to do with calendar dates, not the edible or
romantic ones? I normally look up dates on a calendar; I don't calculate
them.

The only calculation I can think of is the one where you want to know what
day of the week a certain is. In that case I use M$ Excel. I format the
cells in question to FormatCellsCustom, and then enter something like 'ddd
dd mm '. I then enter a numerical date and the ddd part displays the day
of the week.

That's how I found out that I was born on a Wednesday.

RE: Client adding files to iDisk

2011-01-07 Thread Cari Jansen

Hi Chris,

You certainly can. Here's the steps.

System Preferences Click Mobile Me

Sign in to your MobileMe account (if not yet signed in)

Click iDisk tab

Under iDisk Public Folder
* Select Allow others to write files in your public folder
* Select Password-protect your public folder if you want to have some form
of security.

Give your customer the https://public.me.com/etc address for the iDisk
public folder.

They can now log-in on Mac or PC using a web browser, all they need is the
Password, and then click Log In.

(you can create some folders with customer names in the iDisk/Public folder)

Customer clicks the folder-name, then Arrow Pointing UPWARD to upload files.

Adobe’s End User License Agreement for Student and Teacher Editions of Adobe

Your son can purchase the full Adobe CS5 master collection for A$604.00

Alternatively you can get some comparable pricing through an Adobe Resellers

2010-12-18 Thread Cari Jansen
Is the EPUB DRM-free? In that case you should be able to view the EPUB in any
number of EReaders, including iBooks or Stanza.

Here’s what I do:

Click the iPad Device in iTunes

Click Summary and under Options: Enable “Manually manage music and videos”

To load the book into iBooks: Drag and drop the .EPUB file on to your iPad
Device.

OR

To load the EPUB in other apps (e.g. Stanza, Bluefire Reader, Kobo etc.):

Click Apps

Scroll to the bottom of the Apps window until you see “File Sharing”

Select the App in which you want to load the EPUB

Then click Add... and choose the file. (or just drag and drop the file into the
‘documents’ section)

Click Sync

Hope this helps,
