Looking for freelance web designer

2008-08-13 Thread Greg Colgan
Hiya Muggers,
Our company - active in film and television and based in Fremantle - is
looking to do a long overdue overhaul of its website and we're looking for a
creative, talented web designer - preferably with Flash experience - to do
the job for us. An appropriate fee for the job will be negotiated.

Please contact me off list if you are interested or would like to recommend
someone for the job. We're hoping to get this sorted by the end of next
week.

A key requirement is that the new design supports the simple updating of
site information by us, in-house. And yeswe're all mac users.

Thanks in advance!
Greg

Suitable software for interactive chart/work flows?

2008-06-30 Thread Greg Colgan
Hi all,
I'm seeking to identify suitable software that would allow me to construct
an interactive process/flow chart for the purposes of tracking a project
from inception to conclusion. By interactive, I mean that users can
indicate in the program, where they are at with the particular project in
question and such interaction triggers automatic responses - such as new
fields and pathways. Interactivity could range from radio buttons to text
fields.

In our company, each project we do has a series of distinct stages, with
their own set of tasks that need to be considered and completed. I'm hoping
to put together a kind of project 'roadmap' that allows staff to keep track
of where things are at, and that helps them to remember to do certain tasks
at certain stages.

Any suggestions for OSX software that could capably handle this kind of
need?

Thanks for any ideas!

Free for pickup - Epson Stylus CX3500 multifunction printer

2008-01-05 Thread Greg Colgan
Hi there WAMuggers,
If anyone would like this printer, for a pickup in Willetton, please holler.
It has no cartridges installed in it, and I am not sure if it's worthwhile
installing cartridges as I removed them to flush blocked nozzles - which I
did - but opted to buy another printer when I considered the cost of three
replacement cartridges (crazy technology). So, I never got around to finding
out if my rescue operation was successful.

So, I would not recommend anyone attempting to resurrect this unit as a
printer. However, it works fine as a scanner and if anyone is interested in
it for its spare parts, then you're welcome to it.

Failing that, is there a place that will accept retired printers for
recycling?

Cheers,
Greg

Replacement for G3 Powerbook adapter

2007-12-30 Thread Greg Colgan
Hiya Muggers...Happy New Year!
Does anyone know if this unit being sold on EBAY will replace my faulty
power adapter?

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=180172712819ssPageNam
e=MERCOSI_VI_ROSI_PR4_PCN_BIX_Storesrefitem=180198946068itemcount=4refwid
getloc=closed_view_itemrefwidgettype=osi_widget

All of the specs for this adapter seem to match:

AC input is OK
Output is OK (24V, 1.875A)
It's 45W.

My only query relates to the mini plug.
The ad states: OUTPUT CONNECTOR: 7.7 mm X 2.5 mm (Mini Head)

Will that plug into my Powerbook?

I have a G3 Wallstreet (233MHz), with yoyo adapter ( Model M7332 ).

Thanks for any advice!

Close iDVD and update to iDVD '08 (7.0.1). If the issue persists,
 follow the
steps below and keep your iLife '08 installation disc nearby.

Erase the following folders from your hard drive:
 /Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 1
 /Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 2
 /Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 3
 /Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 4

Erase the following folder from your home directory:
 ~/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Installed Themes
 ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.idvd
Note: The tilde (~) represents your home directory.

Reopen iDVD '08, create a new project and wait for the Updating themes
progress bar to complete before quitting the application again. You
 only
 need to do this once.
 To Reinstall Themes 1-4:

Insert the iLife '08 installation disc.
Open the iLife '08 installer package.
In the Installation Type window, select Customize.
Expand the iDVD checkbox and make sure iDVD Extra Content is selected.
Deselect all other checkboxes and proceed with the installation.
 or
Open iDVD '08 and open a project.
 Click Themes.
From the Themes drop-down menu, choose Old Themes.
Select any of the faded-out theme thumbnails.
Follow the onscreen instructions to install all of the themes
 originally
erased by using Software Update or the iLife '08 installation disc.

 Hi Rod,

iLife doesn't automatically install with Leopard.
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
Upgrading to iDVD 6.0.4 or iDVD 7.0.1 should enable you to run iDVD

Using an external hard disk with iMovie

2007-10-24 Thread Greg Colgan
Hiya Muggers...

Anyone out there able to advise on the pros and cons of using an external HD
for storing and editing video footage using iMovie? I'd like to buy a disk
but don't know (for example) whether to get a firewire or USB 2.0 drive.

Also, is it best to transfer the iMovie software over to the same disk? If
so, what is the best way to do this?

Thanks in advance for advice!

Best regards,

Help! Lost files after all turned into alias files during disk burning

2006-06-20 Thread Greg Colgan
Hello there,
I recently upgraded to Tiger and this morning attempted to prepare a disk to
burn my wife¹s school report files. I selected the files on the desktop and
dragged them into the window for the disk, but was surprised to see that all
of the files had become alias files. I dragged them again and got another
set of alias files. I can¹t remember what I did exactly next though I did
remove the cd - but much to my surprise I have a pile of alias files sitting
on the desktop, none of which links to any original files. I cannot find the
original files anywhere. I reinserted the cd, but can¹t drag alias files on
to it. Could it be that the files types have been changed to alias,
preventing me from opening them?

I now understand that creating alias files is actually a normal part of a
new process of burning to disk..wish I knew that at the time!

Have I lost the originals?

Thanks for any adviceI fear my wife is NOT going to be impressed!

Connecting to PPPoE internet using OS9?

How do I connect to the internet using a PPPoE account on OS9? I used to use

Now, I want to get the older G3 computer hooked up to the ADSL modem, but

Apple Software Coupons

Choosing which Eye TV?

2006-01-20 Thread Greg Colgan
Hi Muggers,
There has been some discussion of Eye TV from Elgato recently. For those
using any of the available systems, I'd be interested to hear
recommendations on what set up would best suit a small business running a
LAN. The ability for any individual to send recording instructions over
their computer to the digital recorder would be ideal, as would ease of use
for accessing for playback and then dubbing on to DVD or VHS where desired.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Creating Mbox mail archives in Entourage

2005-06-28 Thread Greg Colgan
Hey there Muggers,

I would dearly like to archive Entourage email from certain projects that I
have finished working on and have catalogued into a series of folders
containing subfolders broken down into categories x subject.

The problem I have though is that when I drag a folder on to my desktop in
order to create an mbox file, all of the mail held in subfolders is ignored.
Is there a way around this - without having to drag all of the emails out of
their subfolders so that there is only one folder? That kind of defeats the
purpose of having things in easily recognised categories.

Thanks in advance for any advice

All the reviews that I've read seem to suggest price is a key
indicator of quality of noise canceling ability.

if they do not have to be headphones then the in ear units like the
Shure and Koss units cut even quite loud back ground external noise
 to very negligible amounts ...

how ever I am a cheap-skate and instead did this.
for a way to save on the $300+ for the Shure and $100 for the Koss
buy the Apple in ear' ones for around $60 then ditch (or at least
don't fit) the useless supplied silicon rubber ear pads. Next go to a
hardware shop (the DIY type not the computer type) and buy a few
pairs of tapered in ear foam hearing protection plugs (the ones that
look a bit like the teat on a small baby's dummy or feeding bottle) -
cut 2 in half ( front to back not length ways) and spike the back
half it on a small (jewellers) screw driver then gently force it on
to the projecting in ear part of the bud. don't worry that the
foam projects a little past the driver on the ear bud as when you
insert them in to your ear that will be pushed back exposing the
 driver
To insert squish the foam for a few seconds then push in to ear and
hold for a a few seconds while the foam expands - great bass response
and almost zero background noise - once you get used to them - you
may want to take them out every hour or so until you do - you can
find your self sleeping 8 hours with them in - great for that red eye
 flight

Alternatives to Adobe Acrobat Pro?

2004-12-10 Thread Greg Colgan
Hi there Muggers,
Thanks for any responses in advance. I¹m looking for software that delivers
on much of the functionality of Adobe Acrobat Pro, but without the hefty
price tag. Any tips? The key function I need is to be able to take OSX
generated PDF files (via the print function) and have some degree of control
to be able to decrease the file size without removing pictorial content.
Sadly, OSX does a good job of creating BIG pdf files, which are not good for
emailing. It¹s a shame you can¹t control the pic resolution up front. I¹ve
been using Colorsync which is useful, but pretty limited and time consuming.

I know there are a number of 3rd party software around that promise
this.anyone had experience with any of these and can recommend them?

ilife 04 upgrade - bah humbug

2004-01-31 Thread Greg Colgan
Don't you just hate it when you buy a new puter and shortly thereafter, a
new suite of software comes as standard? I bought a new laptop a few days
before Xmas and now find out that computers purchased on or after Jan 6
without iLife, qualify for a AUD$35 dollar upgrade - which includes
GarageBand. Normal price is $129 for the family edition.

Some of those bits and pieces in iLife are identical versions to what I
already have, so it's annoying that due to a matter of a couple of weeks, I

Upgrading to OSX from OS9??

2003-10-25 Thread Greg Colgan
Hi there MUGgers,
I've done some research on this on the net (mostly looking at Apple's site),
but would appreciate informed advice from those of you who have been there
and done that.

The issue here is putting Panther on existing machines, buying new hardware
but continuing to run pre OSX software.

I work in a small office which currently has about half a dozen macs - a
mixture of the coloured imacs, a couple of G3 desktops and a couple
Wallstreet G3 laptops. Many of these machines have augmented RAM and would
seem to pass the minimum hardware requirements for running OSX recommended
by Apple (are these specs realistic by the way?)

Naturally, all of our software is pre OSX and our major concern is that if
we go out and buy the latest Panther-equipped macs (say a couple of emacs
and a couple of laptops), will we be able to run out software? We can't
afford to upgrade both hardware and software at this stage, so it's
important to be assured that we'll have no problems in using the following
key software in Panther:

Microsoft Office 98 - esp Word and Excel
Adobe Photoshop v5.0
Adobe Golive 4.0
Now Contact and Up to Date
Quark Xpress v4
Filemaker Pro 4.1
Adobe Acrobat Distiller
Retrospect

Would appreciate feedback from anyone who has already gone down this
path...

Thanks in advance!

Problem with G3 Powerbook battery

2003-10-21 Thread Greg Colgan
Hi there,
A few months ago, I purchased a replacement battery from a local company for
my G3, but after a few days of use, my laptop no longer recognised the
battery's existence. On contacting the company, they supplied me with
another battery and I thought, end of problem. Wrong. After several weeks of
normal behaviour, the battery is suddenly no longer recognised by the laptop
- even though it indicates that it has a full charge.

The problem is likely to be the battery as a colleague has an identical G3
to mine and he got the same result. Besides, I've still got my worn out
original battery from Apple and when I insert that into the bay, the
computer recognises it.

Anyone got any tips on why the batteries are suddenly not being recognised?
The replacement battery has the following specs:
14.4 volts Li-Ion 4000 mAh Model M6385 G/A (this no. doesn't match list of
numbers from Apple, so may not be relevant).

There are no specs on my original Apple battery, apart from Model no. M4685.
On looking at the Apple Support site, for this model no., they indicate that
it is a G3 Series battery with 3 ampere hours (service part 661-2069).

Could the discrepancy between the model no. and/or the ampere ratings be the
reason?

Thanks for any ideas!
Greg

Re: Digital video camera as web cam

2003-06-13 Thread Greg Colgan
Hi there,
I've been using ivisit and a webcam (cross-platform) with reasonable
results. Have not tried with a DV Cam, but the tech people claim that it's
possible. You may like to give it a try. Here's a pasting of answers to tech
questions like yours..some of it is Win-specific.

If you achieve success, let me know! Good luck.

I have a basic iMac and a Sony Digital Handycam (TV730) and would like
somebody to explain how to hook it up so I can show my video on ivisit...any
help would be appreciated. Thanks, Killroy6

Hi killroy6

The iMac will recognise the camera when its plugged in and powered. The four
key Extensions are:
FireWire Enabler 2.8.6
FireWire Support 2.8.8
QuickTime FireWire DV Enabler 2.3
QuickTime FireWire DV Support 2.3
in iVisit go to
Settings/Video Device/Source menu
and the Sony Cam should show as an option

tip - don't try and send both video and audio from the camera or you may
freeze/crash.

is there any way to get my sony DV video camera to work with Ivisit using
the firewire connection? I've tried numerous times to get it to work with no
luck. I'm running WinXP/98 dual boot system, tried it in both systems and
got nothing.

Yes, the SONY DV cam should work just fine provided the following conditions
exist:

* Typically these types of cameras need to be ON before the computer
itself is turned on.
* The software drivers required to enable the camera are installed and
working.
* NetMeeting and all other 3rd party video applications are disabled and
closed.
To disable NetMeeting
open NetMeeting
click TOOLS OPTIONS GENERAL
uncheck Run NetMeeting in the background when windows starts
click OK and close NetMeeting
restart Windows and run iVisit
* The camera is set to allow mapping system wide and is enabled. This can
be found under the properties for sound/multimedia devices. It differs from
Windows 98 and XP.

Hope this helps!

Howdy again Kawauso

Here are some additional possible solutions:

* Set the camera to 160 x 120 in the external software BEFORE starting
iVisit.
* Be sure to set the camera for the correct standard of NTSC or PAL
* Check that the camera is working, has it ever worked in other
applications?

You mentioned it is a dual boot system. What are you using for your
boot-loader? Some Firewire devices need to be initialized at a BIOS level in
order for the OS to recognize it. It is possible that the boot loader is not
picking up the IO signals and passing them onto the OS you select to boot
into.

In either system go into the Device Manager and be sure the Firewire is not
causing system conflicts with other devices via IRQ, DMA or IO. Lastly as
mentioned above, check for mapping enabled. They should be similar to the
below image:

Give all these a try. Please let us know the outcome. Hope this helps!

Problem with installing downloaded software

2003-05-30 Thread Greg Colgan
Hi Muggers,
A colleague of mine is unable to install software downloaded from the net
(or taken from a cd we have given him), even though two other people have
succeeded in doing so. The difference, is that he is using an e-mac running
OSX, while we are running OS8.6 and 9.2.

The problem is that when the software tries to install, an error message
comes up followed by another message stating that he does not have
sufficient access privileges to proceed.

Obviously, he can run 'classic' software, so it seems to me that the problem
has something to do with privileges assigned to software installs by his
computer (which is not part of a network). The software itself does not
have any such restrictions applied to it.

Any suggestions on getting around this problem would be appreciated! As
always, thanks in advance..
Greg

Re: Problem with installing downloaded software

2003-05-30 Thread Greg Colgan
Hi there,
Thanks to all who answered my query. Kaye, we tried your suggestion and it
worked a treat! Excellent!
Greg

We had this problem, even though we only have one account on our
eMac, and it has full administrator privileges. We solved it be
rebooting in OS9, installing the software, then rebooting into OSX,
where it launched under Classic with no problem.

 Cheers, Kaye

Faxing from a computer using broadband

2003-04-30 Thread Greg Colgan
Hi there Muggers,
Got a query for you.

Prior to going over to broadband, I used to use my internal fax/modem to
send faxes. I no longer have a modem account, and am accessing Telstra
broadband through the Ethernet port - so no more faxes.

Does anyone know if there is a way that I can send faxes using broadband?
Any nifty software that will enable me to do that?

Cheers and thanks in advance for any responses.

Re: G3 Powerbook - replacing or rebuilding batteries - results

2003-04-09 Thread Greg Colgan
Hi there Muggers,
After making enquiries and helpful feedback from a list member, I concluded
that the following was the best deal. I put this here in case of use to
members, and comes from Mark Beamish at Siomar Batteries:

The Apple powerbook G3 Wall street LAP5896 (our no. LAP20) is 14.4V 4AH

We can supply the same battery in 2 ways:

1. From China on a lead time of around 4 weeks $180.00 + gst.

2. From an overseas middleman. (also manufactured in China). Lead time
within 10 days $255.00 + gst

The Apple powerbook G3 1999/Lombard/pizmo/firewire/bronze keyboard (our
number B-5899) is 10.8V 4.8AH. This is available only from the middleman.
Lead time within 10 days $298.00 + gst

All are brand new replacement batteries assembled in China using Japanese
cells. They have a 12 month warranty

Subject: G3 Powerbook battery voltages - replacing or rebuilding batteries

 Hi there Muggers,
I've got a couple of dead Lithium Ion G3 Powerbook rechargeable batteries
that either need re-building or replacing. Anyone done this recently with
some feedback to offer on the way to go? I just called Battery World and
they asked me what voltage the batteries are - 9.6, 10.8 or 14.4 volts. I
 have no idea.

The model no. on the battery is M4685 if that means anything, and the laptop
 is a 233Mhz Wall St (I think), manufactured in 1998. Rated 24V - another
 voltage!

Thanks in advance for any helpful feedback.

Looking for older version of a Mac to PC emulator

2002-12-18 Thread Greg Colgan
Hi there Muggers,
Anyone out there got an outdated copy of something like Virtual PC for
running PC progs on a Mac, that they would like to sell or..? This is
for non-business use.

I've got a G3 Powerbook 266Mhz running OS 8.6...so would have to be suitable
for those specs. I'd probably run W95 in it.

Feel free to contact me off list
Thanks!

Weird modem behaviour

2002-01-23 Thread Greg Colgan
Hi Muggers,
I can't find a solution to something with my modem that is increasingly
annoying me, and costing money...

My internal modem on a G3 Powerbook (running OS8.6, Open Transport 2.0.3 and
Remote Access 3.1.3) only connects to my ISP (Q-Net) without a hitch, about
50% of the time. The other 50% is divided between getting a 'could not
connect' error (after the normal sound sequence of a modem attempting to
make a connection and not getting past ppp usually), and getting a weird
almost 1950s Sci Fi sound effects sequence (bit like a theremon(?!) instead
of the normal sounds, followed by the non-connection notification

Typically, I try to connect 2-3 times before achieving success. I think the
line itself is ok as I have a Windows machine that connects hassle free
almost every time.

Any ideas as to how this prob can be solved?

Cheers,
Greg
